NEWS AROUND THE CORNER Page 2

Party Time!! We want to send a huge thank you to World Gospel and Oregon Baptist for hosting two wonderful parties for our kids. World Gospel hosted our Elementary kids at the their church on Sunday afternoon for games, food, and presents. The kids had a wonderful start to December with this party and really enjoyed everything about the party! We also appreciate World Gospel for sharing the First Christmas Story with the kids before they received their gifts. The kids were able to hear that Christmas is not all about parties and presents, but it’s really about Jesus being born on that night in Bethlehem. And then Oregon Baptist Church came to the center on a Thursday evening to host the Middle School and High School kids for their Christmas Party. Oregon Baptist had games, cookies, and crafts for all the kids, and then also gave the kids a present at the end of the party. The kids were able to have fun with their friends, make some ornaments, and enjoy the Christmas Season. We appreciate both groups for

helping us start December and the Christmas Season with some fun parties.

Santa Claus Every year the kids get a very special visit from a very special person during Christmas Time. And every year, their faces light up as they walk in the room and see him sitting in his chair. They are so amazed that he takes a break from his busy schedule to visit them! The kids get a chance to tell Santa anything they want for Christmas! They even get to sit on his lap and pose for a picture! But their favorite part is the candy cane they are given after sitting on Santa’s lap. After every kid is done meeting with Santa, all of the kids crowd around Mrs. Claus while she

reads them a Christmas Story.

Christmas Presents Every year, we receive donations of Christmas presents for the children. This year, we filled over 150 bags full with multiple presents for each child here at the center. Places like Starbucks, Books-A-Million, Fifth Third Bank, and Rid-dell National Bank collected donations of Christmas presents as well as many other businesses. The Terre Haute Fire Department also purchased several items for each kid to help get us started. This year’s turnout was amazing! Every kid lit up as soon as they got their bag of gifts. After receiving their pre-sents, Bill took pictures of every child with their bag of gifts. You can see the amount of joy in their faces. It is so great that we are able to give them joy during the Holiday season especially if some of them are less fortunate, and this may be what is making their Christmas. Giving them joy is what we love to do here at 14th and Chestnut Community Center. They say a picture is

worth a thousand words, and these pictures definitely live up to that saying!

MLK Youth Summit Every year, the schools are closed in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. With schools being out, this leaves many kids with the opportunity to stay home alone and possibly seek out some trouble. Ivy Tech and the Human Relations Commission has decided to sponsor a youth summit every year on this day to reach out to kids and give them a unique opportunity to gain some knowledge and new experiences instead. Each year, we take about 10+ kids to this summit so that they can learn more about Black History, and they can also learn something from the different groups that come together to host this summit. Each year our kids learn something new and also work on team building. We are grateful that our community has come together to help continue to educate our kids even when school is not in ses-

sion.

Family Sponsors Thank you to everyone who became a family sponsor this year at Christmas. Family Sponsors is a growing program here at the center during Christmas time where we look for groups and individuals who are willing to purchase Christmas gifts for the entire family. While the center provides registered center kids with Christmas Presents, many of our children have disabled or younger siblings at home who cannot attend the center, and mom still struggles to provide for these children as well. It is nice to know that there are so many people out there willing to help out all of these kids and their caring mothers during such a wonderful but stressful time of the year. When the program first started out, we sponsored 4 fami-lies. This year, we have sponsored 39 families in total! This is the most that we have ever had, and it is truly a blessing to see how God continues to work in this community. Thank you again to eve-

ryone who continues to help make this possible.

A Million Times Thank You! We would like to take this time to thank all of the different businesses and organizations who truly blessed us during the Christmas Season with all of their donations. Memorial United Methodist Church helped us in two tremendous ways. First, they gathered items and volunteers to host a Santa Shop here at 14th and Chestnut. The Santa Shop is a free shop to our kids where they get the chance to select and then wrap an item for their teacher at school and for a parent. Many of the kids are so excited that they can’t wait for Christmas for their parents to open their gift. It is also nice that they are able to take something to their teacher like many of their classmates do without their parents worrying about how to afford something. MUMC also has an angel tree at their church during their Christmas season. Members of the church select a picture of a child off the tree, and then they make a donation in honor of that child to the center. These donations help make sure that the center is able to continue to operate and feed all of the children that come through our doors! We really truly appreci-

ate the support MUMC provides the center every year.

Miracle on 7th Street, Sycamore Country Club, and Sodexo all provided the center with generous donations of food during the month of December to our Food Pantry and to our Kitchen. Both of these programs now have several supplies stocked up to help with the demand for the next couple of weeks. These donations of produce and canned foods are a big help especially since we have higher volumes of requests at both the food pantry and

the kitchen during December. We appreciate the barrels and truck loads we received!

Coke, Pepsi, Miracle on 7th Street and several other businesses also made rather large monetary donations dur-ing the month of December. These donations help with the increase of oper-ating costs during the cold winter months and also help cover Christmas gifts we are missing. Without these donations we would struggle financially with

several of the different costs that we acquire during the Holiday Season.

Thank you again to everyone who has donated or volunteered during our busiest season of the year! We appreciate the continued support and prayers

we receive!

Volunteer Spotlight Meet Tierra Taylor. Tierra is a student at ISU who has volunteered with us on a couple of different occasions. Tierra is a special volunteer because she is not only a student at ISU, but she has also been crowned Miss Indiana for 2019. Tierra has recently gone to compete in the Miss America Pageant, and all of the kids cheered her on! We are so grateful for this connection, and we hope to continue to have Tierra volunteer with us and inspire our kids to

chase their dreams just like she is chasing hers!

Did you know?

Did you know that the center begins planning for the Summer Program each year around the month of February. We also begin putting out applications for our Summer Staff during that time is well. If you or someone you know is interested in

Need Drivers We are in need of a couple of volunteers who would be available to help us pick up donations. We have several businesses and organizations that donate many different items to us, but we do not have any available staff to drive and pick them up. In order to drive our center vehicles, you must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, and have proof of insurance. Donations would need to be picked up at varying times and days of the week, but if you are available during any hours, it would be

greatly appreciated.

Endowment Donation When the center first began, Barbara Keller wanted to help out and support our desire to assist with literacy in the community. While Mrs. Keller did not directly want to work with the kids, she wanted to make sure that the kids had books to read and materials to help educate them. So, Mrs. Keller started a library at the center. She worked quietly when the kids weren’t here to set up book shelves and provide the center with several books to read. A few years later, she retired. We received word last fall, that Mrs. Keller past away, but she left 14th and Chestnut in her will. She left a very generous donation to our Wabash Valley Community Foundation Endowment Fund. We are truly grateful for this generous donation,

and we look forward to watching as our Endowment Fund continues to grow.

Gifts From the Heart Our annual Gifts From the Heart Fundraiser is coming up on Thursday April 16th. This is a delightful night out with friends enjoying a nice dinner, a silent auction, and hearing all about the wonderful activities and happenings here at the center. This is also the evening where we present one of our volunteers and one of our workers with an award for all of their hard work and dedication to 14th and Chestnut. Please stay tuned for our registration to be in the next newsletter and reserve your seat! You won’t want to miss such a wonderful opportunity to hear about

the center and show your support!

ISU Basketball Games Each year, the center signs up to be a part of the kids club at ISU Sporting events. This allows us to take up to 15 kids to some of ISU’s sporting events. The kids really get into going to the Basketball games during the winter. Em-ma Jean Neal volunteers to take the girls to every ISU Women’s home game. Along with volunteering her time, Emma Jean also makes sure the girls get a treat from the concession stand, and she takes them out to dinner as well. The girls really enjoying getting the opportunity to have a night out with friends, and they also enjoy the

unique experience. The boys also get to go to some of the ISU Men’s games. They also enjoy the night out with friends and treats from the concession stand. It’s always exciting to watch the kids cheer for

their favorite player and get into the game!
