Proverbs 22:6

'Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.'

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PENTHE VALUES OF THE ANZACSLast Thursday was the first time as an adult that

I participated in an Anzac Day March. I’ve seen quite a few dawn services down at Currumbin on the Gold Coast, but it’s a different feel when you are representing those who formally marched into battle representing our nation. It was made even more special to be marching alongside over 70 members of Caloundra Christian College. Our students showed such respect and honour in both our College service and the 2 local commemoration services.

As I reflect on the values that our Anzacs are known for, a number of words come to mind – commitment, perseverance, courage and, of course, mateship. These values were embedded by each soldier day by day, decision by decision, action by action. They aren’t bad values to encourage in our children.

As we support our children in developing strong values and beliefs, activities like the upcoming Athletics Carnival are opportunities to instil the values of responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance. While I appreciate some children have special circumstances they are facing which may preclude them from these activities, I urge parents to be steadfast in helping their children to learn the importance of these values.

NAPLANOn 14-16 May our Year 3, 5, 7, and 9 students will participate in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy. This program has been part of the educational landscape since 2008. It has it’s fans and it’s critics.

The results do assist schools to identify areas of need and the results are transparent, some may say to a fault. Overemphasizing the test can cause stress for students and have a negative impact on their results. At 3C, we prepare our students by helping them become familiar with the test format and continuing to develop their numeracy and literacy skills within the normal course of their learning.

Our focus is on encouraging our students to do their best in order that we can get data that can in turn help them to do better.

RESPONSIBLE THINKING PROCESSOver the last month, the members of the Executive Team have been developing our responsible thinking process. This process is used by quite a number of schools to support students to demonstrate respect for the rights, safety, and the learning of others.

Our goal in introducing the Responsible Thinking Process to 3C is:• To see our classrooms as places where learning is the

priority.• To see our students develop positive, supportive

relationships that benefit themselves and those around them.

• To see our students exhibiting responsibility and intent in their everyday lives.

Below is a general explanation of the process after the initial use of behaviour managements:

We are currently finalising our preparations which should take effect by Week 4. A brochure will be emailed to you before the commencement with more information.

I look forward to seeing you around 3C.RegardsVince Wakefield

RESOURCE CENTRE NEWSScholastic Book Club – Issue 3Issue 3 of Scholastic Book Club will be distributed to classes this week. All orders are due to be placed online via the Scholastic Loop by 8 May 2019.

May – Family Reading MonthInterested students have collected a reading log for participation in the Read More in May Reading Challenge. Students are required to read for 10 minutes every day

(preferably with a family member) and colour the reading log to show progress. Research shows that family reading time is one of the BEST ways to grow a child’s interest in books.

Sign up for the challenge at scholastic.com.au/nfrm - entries close 7 June. Additional Reading Logs are available from the Library staff.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSINGS…“I’ve never seen G Block so clean before!” - Year 8 boy, student at CCC since Prep.

This was just one of the many comments made by both students and staff on our return this term, seeing the spotless condition of our classrooms due to the mammoth undertaking made over the Easter holiday period.

Due to the outstanding efforts of our fabulous cleaners led by Mr Tony Munce, and maintenance team led by Mr Stephen Dittmann, G Block is now a learning space for Middle School students to be even more proud of. Enormous thanks also go to Principal Mr Vince Wakefield and Business Manager Mrs Beryl Hastie for organising this clean.

The garden beds, too, have not been forgotten, with builders on site over the past few weeks, reinstalling concrete edging at the eastern and southern edges of the building. This augments the endeavours made by our hard-working volunteers during the Term 1 working bee. These garden beds will also undergo new planting, which

will make the undercover area an even more welcoming place for students to eat lunch, enjoy one another’s company, and play handball - as well as being used as a classroom learning space, school bag storage, and locker area.

This sees the culmination of a three-year maintenance plan which has included the installation of new bag racks and locker numbers, the purchase of more seating, re-oiling of the existing seating, and repainting of the handball courts. It truly is an undercover area to be proud of, and we honour all those – working bee volunteers, cleaners, maintenance staff, and builders alike - whose efforts have made the area what it is. Thank you!

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM NEWS G’day & Konichiwa!

In Term 1, for the now tenth consecutive year, our College welcomed thirty one positive-minded students from Sakuragaoka High School, Japan. Sakuragaoka is situated in the regional city of Toyohashi, which is a great match for the family-oriented Caloundra culture, and the group’s stay of over three weeks caused strong connections to be built with our College students.

Our new primary building was also admired by our visitors from Seikei Elementary School in March this year. This prestigious private school from Tokyo travels to the Sunshine Coast twice a year and enjoys the fruits of a similarly long-standing relationship with our College.

CCC students and staff were treated with cultural presentations prepared by the Japanese groups as they enthusiastically explained their seasonal festivals, customs, and childhood games with plenty of fun interaction for everyone to enjoy.

It is a privilege to welcome these international guests and we look forward to seeing further positive relationships and experiences blossom out of upcoming Term 3 and 4 programs.

As you receive emails about these tours, you’ll notice a new name in our team. Michelle Noffke has joined the International Program in the role of Homestay Coordinator. With Maddie Kent going on maternity leave at the end of this term, Mark and Michelle will be looking after our International study tours and long term students.

If you would like to learn more about our International Program or would be interested in becoming a host family please do not hesitate to send us an email to [email protected]. Families from K-12 are welcome to apply and we would like for the majority of these students to stay with College families to truly experience our CCC community.

SPORTS WRAP-UPINTERHOUSE CROSS COUNTRYThe first Friday of Term 2 saw the Prep-Year 12 Cross Country Carnival. The rain held off and runners were blessed with cool conditions. For the second year, the course ran from the College oval to the beautiful Ben Bennett Bushland Reserve and back. P-3 completed a shorter, 500m course up the concrete path and back. For several weeks, students had been training for their specific distances in their HPE and Sport lessons. The level of participation and effort from all year levels was excellent!

SCISSA District Cross CountryOn Tuesday 30 April, 34 Primary and Secondary students aged between 9 and 18 represented CCC at the Independent District (SCISSA) Cross Country Championships at the Big Pineapple. To say that it was challenging would be an understatement - it was extremely tough! The hills were large and steep, and the intermittent rain made the dirt and grass tracks slippery. Each race had, on average, 40-50 competitors. The following runners produced notable performances:

NIKOLETTA STADNIK 16yrs Girls 3rd PLACE out of 35 competitors *Nikoletta was selected to represent the district at the Sunshine Coast Regional Trials at Buderim on 28 May

ANZAC DAY TALK TO YEAR 8 SOSE STUDENTSOn Tuesday 23 April, Primary PE Teacher Mr Lawrance (who is also a Secondary SOSE Teacher) gave a lesson to the Year 8s on Australia's involvement in conflicts in general, and Gallipoli in particular. He dressed as a Gallipoli 'digger' and showed a powerpoint on the campaign. He brought in four of his scale models - three WW2 aircraft and a Centurion Tank from the Vietnam War. Finally, the class were served billy tea and dry biscuits - complete with 'flies' (sultanas) - as the soldiers would have had at Gallipoli. The students were very attentive and gained new insights.

CHAPPY'S CORNERWelcome back to Term 2. There’s no easing into this term; we have hit the ground running with our Anzac Day Service and Parade, Cross Country Carnival, and the up-coming Athletics Carnival! As many of you know my house team is Pinyali, so, of course, I was absolutely pumped with the cross country results. Go Pinyali! Hopefully we can be 'winners are grinners' at the Athletics Carnival. You can get House points for just coming and cheering your team on. It’s also a great way for parents to connect into our College community. Hope to see you there... I’ll be the one in red!

I was blessed to have a few hours of in-school cooking on Monday. For those who may not be aware, the College has a food ministry called 'Dinners Served'. The humble 'school-cooked' meals are at hand, ready for families that may benefit from them. Please let me know if this could assist your family or someone else you know of in our community. A big thankyou to Mrs Thompson for allowing me to utilise the Cafe, and for helping with the cooking and keeping me on task.

Finally, a Save the Date for Secondary students - Thursday 23 May is 'Share a Meal'. Once a term, myself and a group of committed students prepare and cook a hot meal for people in our community that are looking for conversation, a place to belong, and a meal together. I am so proud of the students who represent our College. They put so much care into the food they cook, and this is transferred to the people who are so excited to see the College bus arrive at Bulcock Beach, where we enjoy the meal together. You guys are awesome!

We are a College that cares. If you have a prayer request please feel free to email me: [email protected] or contact Front Reception, and they will get a message to me.

Be blessedChappy Linda
