CONSTANT IN REMEMBERING, CELEBRATING, AND BECOMING
Blessed be St Simon the Zealot, Apostle and Martyr!
Happy Feast Day to one and all on this 30th Anniversary since the opening of the
first chapel of St Simon in 1984. Yes, it’s been 30 years! … and well over 6 years
since we came of age as a parish in June 2008. As we complete the third decade of
our existence, it is only right and just that we go back to the basics we decided 5
years ago when practically we summed up our vision and mission with the Theme
for the 25th Anniversary celebration: To Remember, To Celebrate, To Become.
This morning, before the Eucharistic celebration, some images of the important
events since the last Feast Day will be screened to help take our remembering back a
year, and by that little hop backward we should go beyond to recall with appreciation
and thanksgiving all the blessings we have received as a community not just since a
year ago but from the very beginning. We need to renew our sense of wonder in God
calling us to be a parish community, journeying together empowered by the Holy
Spirit, to grow in the faith, hope and love of Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd. He
who does not know from where he comes, does not know where he is, and certainly
will have no idea of where he is going.
No celebration is possible without a true reason to rejoice. We need to connect to the
examples of our founding fathers who, receiving the minimal attention from bishop
and priests, took to themselves the building of the chapel and for years saw to the
growth of the small community. We must connect ourselves to the growing warmth
and intimacy of a community of faith whose members have known each other for
having spent much time together in work and play. We need to connect to the
marvellous gifts of a piece of prime land in a great location and for the many
physical amenities added to the parish (yes, the church is the first to be
air-conditioned in Sabah!). We need to connect to the blessings received since
becoming a parish, the many ministries that have been established and flourishing,
the new chapel and the many other upgraded amenities. And we need to thank God
for the dedication and pastoral attention of our leaders, the parish staff and priest in
our life of worship, formation and renewal, service and outreach.
How should we as members of the parish respond then? What should we be
becoming?
The New Evangelization. The true vibrancy of a community of faith is seen in its
ability to inspire members to grow in the true faith, and to reach out to those who
have yet to encounter the Lord Jesus. This vibrancy is nurtured through a whole
variety of activities, prayer and worship, relevant faith and skill formation for our
times, but it all boils down to renewal made in generous and selfless service.
St Simon the Zealot our Patron is a shining example. Zealous to spread the Good
News, St Simon was prepared to give up his life even when his services remained
largely unknown. Zeal, Joy, and anonymity for the Good News, these are the virtues
for which those who claim him to be Patron should constantly emulate.
Like it or not St Simon is largely a middle-class parish. The mortal temptation to just
sit back and enjoy the services provided in comfort is constantly there; the tempta-
tion to be served and not to serve; to claim the rights but not the obligations. This is
probably an infection many have caught from the prevalent Sabahan middle-class
home where amahs and hirelings do all the work. If body language is any manifesta-
tion of the symptoms, the poor response to the prayers and singing in the Sunday
Mass says a lot about who we have become!
Zeal and Joy of the Gospel underlines our pastoral thrust as confirmed once again by
the recently concluded Prayer, Discernment and Pastoral Planning in the parish.
The truth is, there is no do-or-die need for all kinds of special programs. If one truly
worships in spirit and truth even just on a Sunday renewal can begin. What is needed
is a courageous and open spirit to listen and celebrate the Word and Sacrament, and
allow the grace of God to prompt us to constant conversion and growth. The zeal and
joy to evangelize, seen in our wider engagement in services, will spring from the
Eucharist. Through the intercession of St Simon the Zealot, the saint of anonymity,
may the human crave for attention and self glory never need to hinder us to become
the servant and evangelizer community of faith.
As we thank God on this 30th Anniversary of the parish, we thank all our brothers
and sisters for the love, care, and services rendered. May God bless most those who
have prayed and served without being known.
PRAYER TO ST SIMON THE ZEALOT, APOSTLE AND MARTYR
O Glorious Patron Saint Simon, called the Zealot, for passion in the faith; Apostle picked and sent by Jesus Himself to found the Church. You travelled far and wide to spread the news of Him who loved us all; True to Him till you died a martyr’s death. Saint we proclaim you, Patron we claim you. Teach us to be like you, zealous to serve the Lord, That together we may build the Kingdom among all. And when we have done all that is asked, may we like you the faithful servant say: “It is only but our duty”, And be content to remain unknown. O Saint Simon the Zealot, Apostle and Martyr, Pray for us through Christ the Lord. Amen
