Rabbi Anthony Fratello

If you or someone you know is

struggling with addiction,

please do not hesitate to call:

Rabbi Anthony Fratello,

at Temple Shaarei Shalom,

561-364-9054.

You will be treated with love

and respect.

You will be welcome to worship

with us.

We will support you and guide

you until you find your right

path.

Whenever I say goodbye to the Children in the

Religious School before summer I always tell them

two things:

1. Sunscreen. Summer is hot, summer is sunny,

especially here in Florida. Whether they are go-

ing to camp, going on vacation, or just playing

outside, I want them to think of their wellbeing.

2. Don’t forget about me during the summer.

Because I won’t forget about you. I know that when

our kinder head out to camp, or vacation, or just

spend a few months away from Temple Shaarei

Shalom, they forget all about the place.

I think, truth be told, I could give this same advise to

many of the Adults I know as well.

The first piece is to take care of your own wellbeing.

I am fond of giving “Rabbi Fratello’s Golden Rule,”

which states that Number 1, you must care for

yourself. If you don’t take care of yourself, you are

no darn good to anyone else. I think that these are

operative words to live by and good for anyone.

The second is trickier. Our own modern liberal

approach to Judaism means that in many ways we

don’t live our faith everyday. When you keep

Kosher you think about everything you put in your

mouth. When you are committed to praying three

times a day, your schedule reflects it. When you are

assiduous in the observance of Mitzvot, your life

tends to follow certain set patterns. Most of us

Reform Jews are without these constant reminders of

our faith and obligations. Because of that it is easy

to forget, it is easy to “check out,” it is easy to just

let it slide.

I don’t want you to do that. I don’t want ANY of

you to do that. No I am not going to suggest that all

of you need to go back to an Orthodox Level of

Observance, but I do want each of you to take more

time to check in. Take more time to think about

“doing Jewish.” It is not always easy, it is not

always convenient, but it always pays dividends.

What are the dividends you might ask? Refer back

to Number One.

So many times people tell me, “Rabbi, I feel so

good when I come to services.” “Rabbi… I did a

Mitzvah today and it really made my day better.”

“Rabbi, we took time to do Shabbat this week and it

was really special.”

Yes, I believe that when we Do Jewish we are

fulfilling what it is that God demands of us. But, I

also recognize a much more selfish reason. When

we Do Jewish… it feels good. And when we feel

good we take care of ourselves, and life… is better.

Whatever your summer plans may be… sunscreen,

take care of yourself, and don’t forget me while you

are away, because I will not forget you.

Track, Flag Football and Basketball

Academics: Math and Science

Special Interests: Computers

Torah Portion: Beha’alotkha

An important theme in my Torah portion deals with

hunger. For my Bar Mitzvah Project, I collected non-

perishable foods at my middle school for the Soup

Kitchen of Boynton Beach. It serves the homeless, the

working poor, the unemployed and their families…no

questions asked! ? I was very unaware that there are

people who don't have food to eat or the money to buy

necessary items living so close to my home. I am glad

to raise awareness about hunger in Palm Beach County

and collect food for those less fortunate than me. Be-

coming a Bar Mitzvah was a challenging but rewarding

experience.

For my mitzvah project I wanted to honor my late

grandfather, a U.S. Navy vet. I decided to organize a

donation drive to benefit local veterans in need. We

teamed up with Faith*Hope*Love*Charity Inc. – a

nonprofit that assists vets struggling with mental/

physical wounds, addictions, homelessness and other

issues. We delivered care packages to Stand Down

House over Memorial Day weekend.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES

As we approach the end of June and the end of the Temple’s fiscal year, I felt it was time to talk about what

Religious Services means and what we do as a committee.

Actually, “Religious Services” is kind of an umbrella under which there are several committees and sub

committees. The one you probably are the most familiar with is Ritual, which is the committee that supports Rabbi

and Cantor and all things pertaining to the observances we follow in our temple.

Under the Ritual Committee are the people who make phone calls to arrange for our congregants to have Honors to

participate in our Friday night services. We also have a committee who perform a Shabbat Service every Friday

afternoon for the residents at the Boynton Beach Rehab facility. There is a group of us who lead a Minyan service for Shiva's if

Rabbi or Cantor are not available. And last but definitely not least, you see us at services Friday nights and Saturday mornings to

make sure the Sanctuary is prepared the way Rabbi has requested and to meet and greet all of you to make you feel welcome.

The Ushering Committee, which used to be for High Holy Days only, has been expanded to include all special events, such as

Rabbi’s special weekend and the Adult B’nei Mitzvah.

The Israel Committee, as you know if you attended our last event for Yom Ha’Atzmaut in April, is to enlighten and

enrich our knowledge of Israel and to support Israel in every way possible.

The Social Action Committee, the newest addition to the group, is to bring kindness, service and help to those in need, both in and

out of our community. We have had two food drives; one prior to Yom Kippur and one prior to Passover, a Good Deeds Day

program, and a letter writing campaign to our senators both Nelson and Rubio to support laws to help end gun violence and the sale

of attack weapons. We are hoping to expand the work that this committee does to not only include our Congregants, but to also

include Jews and non-Jews in the community at large. I would be happy to include anyone looking for a place to put their energies

and expertise on any one of these committees.

Also, we are quickly approaching the time of year when I start thinking about Honors for the High Holy Days. I have 162 Honors

to be assigned for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you’re a new member or and old member of TSS who hasn’t had an honor,

if you’d like to be part of our Shofar Choir for the Holidays, if you’d only like an Arc opening because you don’t read Hebrew well

or not at all but want an honor anyway, please contact me. However, if you’ve had the same honor for the last five years, you may

not receive it again because everyone deserves a chance. But I promise to keep track of everyone’s request and try to honor it to the

best of my ability.

After serving as the Interim Vice President of Religious Services for the past eight months, it was my honor to have been elected to

that position by all of you at the Congregational Meeting and those of you who voted by ballot and I promise to serve this

Congregation with grace, humility and the best I know how. If we haven’t met, please stop and introduce yourself when you come

into the Sanctuary and please let me know if there is anything I or one of the committees that serve under me can do to make you

experience in our Temple more meaningful and personal.

Rhoda Gottlieb

Vice President of Religious Services

Email: [email protected]

While our family mourns the loss of our extraordinary son, Rick’s memory will

always be for a blessing to the Landau and McCrary families. We cannot thank the

congregation enough for their kindness and support during our most difficult time.

We have truly been surrounded by love and understanding and will be forever

thankful.
