History

Hydrodynamic power transmission is a proven technology which is developed further since 110 years:

• 1904 Dual Torque Converter by Hermann Föttinger.

• 1985 Epicyclic gear with single torque converter andspeed superposition for efficient speed control.

• 2012 Epicyclic gear with dual torque converter for increased part load efficiency at speed control,

Hydrodynamics

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hermann Föttinger (1877–1945)Hermann Föttinger worked with hydrodynamics –wear-free power transmission using a circulatingfluid. He developed the hydrodynamic torqueconverter. With this, he was able to very efficientlyconvert torque and speed between the drivingmachine and the driven machine.

FunctionParts of the Torque Converter

The torque converter has three components:

• Pump impeller

• Turbine wheel

• Adjustable guide vanes

The operation medium is usually mineral oil, also used for the lube oil supply.

Function Torque Converter

The torque converter characteristic shows increasing torque at decreasing speed.

There is one point with optimum efficiency.

A second torque converter with a different characteristic allows to operate in two optimum point and the range in between.
