Antonio Vivaldi

L’estro armonico, op. 3For 4 violins, 2 violas, violoncello, double-bass viol and basso continuo (harpsichord)Edited by Christopher Hogwood

Published in 1711, the collection 'L'estro armonico' consisting of 12 concertos was designed

methodically by Antonio Vivaldi: Each of the four groups of three consists of a concerto

for four violins, a double concerto for violin and a solo concerto. Based on the principle

of arranging the modes in pairs, each concerto in the major mode is followed by a concerto

in the minor mode. With 'L'estro armonico', Vivaldi made a name for himself in the whole

of Europe and exerted a profound influence on the works of subsequent composers

such as J. S. Bach.

The study score with all 12 concertos, edited by the renowned musicologist and conductor

Christopher Hogwood, has already been published and is available at a price of £ 19.99 /

€ 39,95 (product numbers ETP 1871-82 / ISMN M-2002-2051-3). The sets of parts will be

published in September.

Animals30 Easy Piano Pieces for Children

Many composers have enjoyedusing music to portray animalsand their appearance, movementsand sounds. In some of thesepieces, you might even guess whichanimal is being portrayed, even ifyou don’t know the title. This book, with its 30 compositions, gathersa large variety: tiny ones like thefly and the grasshopper, huge oneslike the bear and the elephant, dangerous ones like the pantherand the shark, tame ones like thekitten or the dog, animals livingunderground like the mole, ontrees like the monkey, or in the airlike the birds, the wasp or thebutterfly. This book therefore provides a rather colourful andinstructive ‘zoology’ for pianolessons.Grade: easyISMN 979-0-001-15053-8ISBN 978-3-7957-5874-5

Essential Exercises

Czerny, Carl

40 Daily Exercisesfor piano, Op. 337

Edited by Ulrich Mahlert

The specific feature of ‘40 DailyExercises’ is the extraordinarydensity of musical examples andspecific technical problems in thissmall edition. In mostly one-barformulas, Czerny, with his almostinexhaustible didactic imagination, maps out a cosmos of technicaltraining material which virtuallycondenses the idioms of the clas-sical and early Romantic pianomusic between Haydn and Czerny’spupil Franz Liszt. Each study dealswith a particular musical-technicalproblem which varies in appear-ance and is usually edited for bothhands. All individual expressionsexpand and deepen the basicskills to be practised so that eachindividual number offers consider-able learning potential.

24 FinishingStudiesfor piano, Op. 70

Reprint, edited and newlycommented by Wilhelm Ohmen.

Ignaz Moscheles’ (1794-1870)‘Studien für das Pianoforte, zurhöheren Vollendung bereits aus-gebildeter Klavierspieler, beste-hend aus 24 charakteristischenTonstücken, Op. 70’, published in1827, are among the best studiesof that time, covering the differentidiomatic figurations for the pianoin every key, mostly alternatingbetween major and minor mode.

With their imaginative piano set-ting, their typical phrasing andexpressive harmonic idioms, thestudies present themselves as theforerunners of the romantic char-acter piece.

The technically demanding figura-tion is mainly played by the righthand, but often appears in shortleft-hand passages as well. As thetitle of the work implies, thesestudies are meant for theadvanced pianist, although theyare not as difficult as the étudesby Chopin, Schumann or Liszt.

Händel, Georg Friedrich

Suite D minorHWV 437 (HHA II/4 – Walsh 1733 No. 4)

Edited by Wilhelm Ohmen

The number of Georg FriedrichHandel’s works for keyboard isreasonably small, compared tothat by his great contemporaryJohann Sebastian Bach. He wasan excellent harpsichordist andimproviser. The works that can becalled real masterpieces are hiseight major suites and the sixmajor fugues. Characteristic styl-istic features of Handel’s key-board works are the change ofhomophonic and contrapuntal set-tings and solemn processionalrhythms. His works are intendedfor the harpsichord.

This also applies to the currentSuite in D minor which was pub-lished in the second collection ofsmall suites in 1733. Clearly struc-tured, with its pleasant allemandeand the familiar simple chordalsarabande, it classifies as easy tomoderately difficult and can beeasily mastered by the piano pupiland music lover.

Reinecke, Carl Heinrich Carsten

ChristmasSonatinafor piano, Op. 251/3

Edited by Hans Musch

In the 19th century, the Christmascelebrations increasingly movedfrom the church to the familyhome. The delicately wovenChristmas Sonatina by CarlReinecke (1824-1910) testifies tothat. Motifs from Bach’s Sinfoniafrom the Christmas Oratorio orfrom Handel’s Messiah blend withmelodies of popular Christmascarols such as ‘Silent Night, HolyNight’, ‘Vom Himmel hoch’ or ‘O du fröhliche’. Due to its moder-ate difficulty, the Sonatina by thissensitive and in those days highlyesteemed composer is suitablefor both pupils’ concerts and forprivate music-making in theAdvent and Christmas season.

5 Pieces for Pianoop. 97

Edited by Wilhelm Ohmen

Christian Sinding (1856-1941)gained worldwide fame with hispiano piece ‘Frühlingsrauschen’,which is likely to be his mostfamous work still today. The ‘5 Klavierstücke’ Op. 97, createdin 1909, are bravura pieces thelate Romantic harmony of which issometimes reminiscent of RichardStrauss. The effective brilliantpiano setting is characterised by awidely elaborated melody and canbe easily mastered by theadvanced player.

Large arpeggios characterise thefirst piece ‘Des Morgens’. ‘Aufdem Wasser’ is an evocative tonepainting in swaying 12/8 timewith powerful unison passages inthe middle section. ‘Intermezzo’appears capricious, with dance-like figures. ‘Gewitter’ is a bril-liant concert study in the style ofLiszt. The work concludes with thepiece ‘Aquarell’, a poetic salonpiece revelling in harmonies, notated as a clear piano setting.

Schroeder, Hermann

Concerto da chiesaEdited by Clemens Ganz

‘Concerto da chiesa’ is the lastorgan work by Hermann Schroeder(1904-1984). It was composed afew months before his death. Thepremiere was performed byClemens Ganz, then organist atthe Cathedral of Cologne, in mem-ory of the esteemed teacher andcollege colleague. The workmarks the end of a tirelessly pro-lific life with more than one hun-dred organ works of various char-acters, genres and possibilities ofuse in liturgy and concerts.

The title ‘Concerto da chiesa’reveals that this is a work for con-certs, not for being used in ser-vices. The three-movement com-position is an unmistakable‘Schroeder’ work: emphasis of lin-earity according to high baroquestandards, conciseness and some-times impulsive gestures of thethemes and rhythms, layers ofparallel chords within a freely tonalmodern harmony, not forgetting theplasticity of form and the motorfunctions which are surprisinglyenergetic for an eighty-year-old.

Leduc, Simon

3 Easy Duetsfor 2 violins

Edited by Erich Doflein

Simon Le Duc (1742-1777) is oneof the most important Frenchorchestral composers of his timeand was held in high esteem by hiscontemporaries. Leopold Mozarttoo showed respect for him in histravel notes. His opus VI, ‘Sixpetits Duos pour deux violons dela plus grande facilité’, was firstpublished in 1771 by the publish-ing house of his brother Pierre. Many characteristic themes fromthe duos could have been writtenby Haydn, while the well-balancedformal structure of the move-ments is reminiscent of JohannChristian Bach. The music standsout due to the new contrasting, melodic, homophonous style ofthe classical idiom undergoingdevelopment. All in all, the way inwhich it compiles duos of imagi-native art and its design for theviolin in particular, makes this col-lection ideal for lessons, auditionsand amateur music-making.

On his numerousconcert tours through the whole ofEurope, he played time and againthe concertos he had composedfor his instrument or played hisown works in smaller ensembles.

Apart from these ‘serious’ cham-ber music works, i.e. sonatas, trios, quartets, etc., Spohr alsowrote a number of salon pieces:the first series with six titles asopus 127 and the second as opus135 which opens with the‘Barcarole in G major’ presentedhere. Tartini, Giuseppe

Sonata in D majorfor violin solo

Edited by Tibor Ney

It was the Devil’s Trill Sonata thatimmortalized Giuseppe Tartini(1692-1770) although said work isjust one of a vast number of con-certos and sonatas for strings andespecially for his instrument, theviolin. The present ‘Sonata in Remaggiore per Violino solo’ is atechnically demanding, yet uclut-tered work. The slow movements, the introductory Andante cantabileand the Largo headed TASSO,composed over the melody of aVenetian gondola song, give thesoloist the opportunity for cantabileplaying. The playful Minuettoclearly breathes the spirit of thepost-Baroque era while the Allegroassai coming second mixes stronglygripping passages with beguiling-ly sentimental ones. The charac-teristic ambiguous movement isrepeated after the Minuetto, thuscompleting the solo sonata.

Concerto No. 10C major for violin and string orchestra(1766), Krebs 157

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) drew attention to himselfeven as a child due to his musicaltalent: At the age of seven he tookviolin lessons, only three yearslater he was hired as a violinist inVienna and played little solos. Hisnumerous compositions and par-ticularly his ‘singspiels’ (song-plays) were very popular with theaudience. In 1766 Dittersdorf wrotethe Violin Concerto in C majorwhile being in service as leader ofa music band in Großwardein, apost he had accepted in succes-sion to Michael Haydn. The solopart was probably played by thecomposer himself at the first per-formance. The concerto is a workthat is fun to play: A pleasant, particularly concertante Allegromoderato is followed by a playfulcantabile Andante and a Presto asvirtuoso finale.

Metamorphosenfor violin

In ‘Metamorphosen’ – performedfor the first time in March 2008 byViviane Hagner at a Berlin galaconcert marking the 80th birthday ofthe composer, only a few weeksbefore his death – Frank MichaelBeyer refers to Skryabin’s PianoSonata No. 6 from 1911, a workthe motivic and thematic penetra-tion of which ahead of the serialtechnique had fascinated Beyersince his student days. Based on ascale found in Skryabin’s works,Metamorphosen contrasts the fre-quently ecstatic nature of thepiano setting with the linearity ofthe solo violin. The strict structureis contrasted by the music’s freecharacter which Skryabin himselfdescribed as ‘volando – flying’.

Gál, Hans

Impromptufor viola and piano (1940)

Hans Gál wrote ‘Impromptu’ inEdinburgh in August 1940 for histhen 15-year-old son Peter. Hisson had already taken several vio-lin lessons and now wanted to tryto play the viola in order to join ayouth orchestra. As a conse-quence, ‘Impromptu’ is easy toplay, and its Romantic harmoniesin the equally easy piano accom-paniment make the piece a wellsounding duo that can even beperformed by beginners.

The Austrian composer and musi-cologist Hans Gál (1890-1987)composed operas, orchestralworks, concertos, vocal musicand, especially in the last decadesof his life, numerous chambermusic works. In addition, he pub-lished books (Brahms, Schubert,Verdi) and essays. When Gál wasforced to leave Germany in 1933,he first moved to Vienna and final-ly settled in Edinburgh where hecomposed and taught at the uni-versity until his death.

Salve ReginaCantilena choralis

for cello and organ

Edited by Hans-Ulrich Adamek

This little work was composed atthe suggestion of the Belgianorganist Jef Anseeuw who per-formed the world premiere at theHeilig-Hart Kerk in Izegem on 25 September 1982 together withLieven Vanderwalle on the violon-cello. The piece begins with aparaphrase of the initial motif‘Salve Regina’ which is intonatedby the cello in the low register. The cello then plays the entiremelody of the song. The decentorgan accompaniment is limitedto some short interludes in whichmotifs of the Gregorian melody,as in a classical chorale prelude, are played in advance in an imita-tive manner. The lyrical, medita-tive composition is ideal for ser-vices or concerts and can be com-bined as an introductory piecewith the large-scale organ compo-sition ‘Salve Regina’ fromSchroeder’s ‘MarianischeAntiphone’ (ED 4538).

Two Sonatasfor cello and basso continuo

Edited by Gerhart Darmstadt

The six sonatas by BenedettoMarcello (1686-1739) are amongthe best-known baroque composi-tions for violoncello and bassocontinuo, second only to those byAntonio Vivaldi. Marcello was afamous composer during his life-time, and consequently his collec-tion could be found in printed edi-tions in the major European musicmetropolises of London, Paris andAmsterdam. Even if there is someuncomfortable fingering in thesesonatas – which might be due toMarcello’s working with a five-string cello with an added E’ string – they are of only moder-ate difficulty and belong to thestandard works of the violoncelloteaching literature.

Grand ConcertoConcerto militaire

for cello and orchestra (1847)

Edited by Jean-Christophe Keck

In 1847, Offenbach wrote a large-scale concerto of no less than 45minutes’ duration for ‘his’ instru-ment, the violoncello. It combinesthe classical symphonic structurewith the liveliness and elegantorchestration for which the mas-ter of the ‘opéra-bouffe’ is wellknown. The work got its epithetfrom the forceful third movementwith its regular flashes of fanfare-like sounds which is totally differ-ent from the slow middle movementwhere the melodist Offenbachgives the solo instrument theopportunity of playing to the full.

In its reconstructed completeform, the ‘Grand Concerto’ wasperformed in Paris in April 2004for the first time. The present edi-tion for violoncello and piano issuited for both studying the origi-nal work and giving concert per-formances.

Kaifor solo cello and ensemble

‘Kai’ was written in memory of KaiScheffler, principal cellist and akey member of the EnsembleModern in Germany, who diedtragically young in 1989. The 18minute work is in four continuousmovements and leads the per-formers from an aggressive open-ing through many contrasting sec-tions, often distinctly jazz influ-enced, to a slow final requiem. The solo part is almost exclusivelylyrical, stretching out long, mournful lines over an accompa-niment which, in contrast, can beabrupt and claustrophobic. This isa challenging and fantasticallyrewarding work which has estab-lished itself in the core of the con-temporary cello repertoire.

Bach, Johann Sebastian

Two-PartInventionsfor soprano and tenor recorder

Edited by Ladislav Daniel

Now recorder players can enjoythe well-known and popular col-lection of little compositions, thetwo-part inventions by JohannSebastian Bach, in this new publi-cation for recorder duet. The taskof arranging the works was madeeasier by the author as the com-positions for two hands, in theoriginal version written for a key-board instrument, contain exclu-sively one-part melodies. It there-fore sufficed to transpose only theleft hand to the treble clef. Thenother passages had to be adaptedto the range of the two recordersby means of octave transposition. These changes have not spoilt thecharm and attractiveness of thecontrapuntal works; on the con-trary, they have led to a beautifulcollection of recorder duets.

The Undine Sonata for flute andpiano is one of the few works bythe composer Carl Reinecke whichis still regularly performed today, and is at the same time one of thefew Romantic repertoire piecesfor transverse flute. Although notobviously programme music atfirst glance, and sometimes evenquestioned as such by contempo-raries, the work nevertheless fallsback on the Undine subject whichwas a popular opera theme in the19th century. The Wiener UrtextEdition now presents a new publi-cation of the work which closelyfollows the text of the original edi-tion (unfortunately, manuscriptsources are not extant). The noteson interpretation follow the tracksof the extra-musical programme, trying to bring the work and itsinterpretative understanding intoclose connection with the Undinesubject.

Who would have thought that rag-time would enjoy another renais-sance! But more than 50 yearsafter the death of its main repre-sentative, Scott Joplin, the film‘The Sting’ has made this oncepopular style well-known andfashionable again. This smallselection of Joplin rags is ofcourse not complete without ‘TheEntertainer’. In comparison, ‘EasyWinners’ and ‘Rag-Time Dance’are no less fun to play, particular-ly since in the latter the per-former not only has to play butalso stomp his foot. Senfter, Johanna

Sonata in Afor clarinet (in A) and piano, Op. 57Edited by Günter Matthes

The biography of the reserved andwithdrawn composer JohannaSenfter is not characterized byany outstanding events or inci-dents. Born in Oppenheim on theRhine on 27 November 1879, thecomposer chose to live on theSparrhof, her family’s estate, allher life until her death on 11 August 1961. Her amazingmusicality already showed at anearly age and was early recog-nized and actively encouraged byher parents. Max Reger repeated-ly testified to his pupil’s ‘extraor-dinary compositional talent’.

The works by Johanna Senfter aremainly influenced by Brahms andReger, but she knew pretty soonhow to further develop Reger’spersonal style individually in herown works without ever crossingthe – widely drawn – boundariesof a harmony based on the func-tional theory. The time of creation ofthe Sonata for A clarinet (or viola)and piano Op. 57 can only be esti-mated: probably around 1925.

Through the medium ofnew music, his intention is tostimulate the imagination of theplayers. In his ‘Suite’, he first andforemost aims to make a contri-bution to the ‘classical’ saxophonerepertoire. Consisting of 5 move-ments (Gehüpft und gesprungen -Bedächtig schreitend - Rundtanz -Blues - Taktwechsler), the compo-sition includes references to theorigin of the classical suite as asequence of dances. The moder-ate difficulty of the saxophonepart as well as the relatively easypiano setting make this work anideal choice for auditions andcompetitions.

Panta rhei4 Mantras for Saxophone Quartet

‘Panta rhei – everything is in astate of flux’ is the bottom line ofwhat the Greek philosopherHeraclitus believed. ‘Everything isin a continual state of flux andchange’ – to him, this was ‘logos’,rational order. It is at the inter-face between personal thoughtand archaic ritual that the fourmantras for saxophone quartethave been created. In Hinduismand Buddhism, ‘mantras’ aresacred sentences, key messages,‘instruments of thought andspeech’. They were addressed tothe deities as a form of worshipand way of concentration andmainly consist of continuouslyrepeated syllables and words. With this in mind, each movementin ‘Panta rhei’ has been given aprincipal motif (especially a basicrhythmic gesture) which isrepeated in variations and cyclesbut always differently – in a per-petual state of flux. Many pieces with a classical cycleof movements lead to an examina-tion of baroque counterpoint inthe form of a fugue. String Quintet C majorfor 2 violins, 2 violas and cello,Op. 3/6

Edited by Tilman Sieber

Gaetano Brunetti, who was bornin Italy, probably in Fano, in 1744and died in Madrid in 1798, wasamong the most progressive com-posers of his time. He joined thecourt of Madrid early on andunder King Charles III rose to thepost of violin teacher and band-master of the Prince of Asturia, the later King Charles IV. Underhis reign, the musical life at theSpanish court gained in impor-tance and Brunetti rose to be thedirector of the royal chamberorchestra founded in 1795. Thepresent string quintet is commit-ted to the concertante style. As allparts in this piece can changetheir function, the registers areoften changed as well which leadsto a string setting with the mostsubtle tonal nuances. The String Quartet in G minor byAnton Wranitzky (1761-1820) isone of the great works that com-bine stylistic devices developed bythe turn of the century, such asthe development of the sonataform by his thematic-motivicwork, the contrasting effects ofsound and structure, and theequal standard of all five parts. It is the first of the three QuintetsOp. 8 with double violas and cel-los. Unique in its instrumentation, they broaden the sound spectrumof the Boccherinian type with twocellos and some early quintetswith three violins and two cellos, thus revealing the wealth of vari-ants in the string quintet instru-mentation which is typical of thegenre.

String Quintet F majorfor 2 violins, 2 violas and cello,Op. 2/6

Florian Leopold Gaßmann’s (1729-1774) Op. 2, ‘Sei quintetti,Dilatamenti, Notturni o siaSerenate Per Violino o Flauto,Violino Secondo, Due Viole eBaßso ...’ belongs among the ear-liest quintets, alongside those byAumann, Vanhall, Wagenseil anda few others. In contrast to threeother quintets of this series, theprincipal part in this quintet isfree of typical instructions for thestrings and double stops; it maytherefore even be played by theflute. As in Joseph Haydn’s firstquartets Op. 1, two minuets in thecurrent quintet frame a slow mid-dle section, which interrupts thecommon equality of keys.

Typical of the early quintet set-tings of the Viennese area is thearrangement of violins and violasin pairs so that the parts areoften similar to a trio settingaccompanied in thirds.

The three-part work is based on texts fromclassical antiquity, the MiddleAges and the present time whichare all dealing with the issue of‘music’, texts by Plato, Virgil,Ovid, Shakespeare, Edward Bond.In addition to a powerful choir, the 40-minute work requires anarrator and a differentiatedinstrumental ensemble.

Der Sonnen -gesang des Franz von Assisifor 2 mixed choirs (SATB/SATB)(2007)

‘Sonnengesang’ [Canticle of theSun] is part of world literatureand has had a decisive influenceon Italian poetry. It is consideredto be the ‘lullaby of the Italianlanguage’. The musical setting ofthe Canticle of the Sun is writtenin German. To conjure up the‘ancient’ aura of the original, justa few words are quoted from theOld Italian.

The musical setting of the Canticleof the Sun tries to capture thefolkloristic style of the original. Asa consequence, no choral tech-niques of the new music were tobe used (although there some-times are whispers or clusterchords). The piece was ratherinspired by the sonority of OldItalian chants, as can still beheard in Sardinia and Corsicatoday, with long stationary chordsand parallel voice leading. (Enjott Schneider)

Lo sposo di tre (1783) was a greatsuccess of the young LuigiCherubini. The burlesque story ofdisguises and mistaken identitiestakes up the traditions of theItalian commedia dell’arte, withlove-stricken elder gentlemen, alawyer’s scene, etc. Cherubiniwrote a sparkling array of effec-tively instrumented music pieces:entertaining, yet sometimes evendeadly serious ensemble music, touching arias, virtuoso pieces, ballets and of course an ombrascene. The highlights are thegreat chain finales, particularlythat of the first act which eventu-ally leads all participants to mad-ness with a delightful parody onthunderous organ sounds.
