Open Supervised Printmaking Expressive Painting with Paul Wadsworth A liberating course which enables students of all skill levels to explore a variety of expressive painting and drawing methods. Students will work from landscape and the life model to create large scale expressive works. Tuition includes mark making, colour, composition, energy, tonality and surface texture. Figure Drawing with Jason Walker Taught by prize winning portrait artist and gifted teacher, Jason Walker, this one day drawing course covers many aspects of representing the figure through traditional life drawing including anatomy, proportion, measurement and composition. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience of working from the figure. Colour and Abstraction with Gareth Edwards This intensive two day course explores mark making, colour and composition. The teaching will include practical exercises looking at the work of the great 20th century masters and leading contemporary abstract painters analysing techniques and strategies. The expressive and emotional qualities of colour will be explored as well as its formal qualities. Gouache Painting with Maggie O’Brien Our one day Gouache course provides a wonderful ‘taster’ of this exciting medium. Many well known artists from J M W Turner through to Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, Roger Hilton and, more recently, Anish Kapoor have used gouache as a painting medium. Maggie O’Brien is the most generous and encouraging of artist teachers; sharing the tricks of her trade and helping students to brave trying methods and techniques which are new to them. Experimental Drawing with Sam Bassett A playful course which aims to free up your drawing process. You will be encouraged to create spontaneous work through employing a wide range of experimental exercises. The course includes drawing with a huge range of materials from pencils, oil sticks, exercises on large paper with brushes on yard sticks to painting with industrial materials and immediate monoprinting with a press. Printmaking for Beginners with Rachael Kantaris This stimulating course offers beginners and those with limited experience of printmaking the opportunity to explore a wide range of printing techniques over two days. The teaching will be made up of both hands-on training and demonstrations. Techniques will include mono-printing with a press, intaglio and relief collagraph printing and drypoint. Printing in Colour – Sir Terry Frost with Mary Crockett An unmissable opportunity for fans of Frost to make prints under expert guidance. The relief printing course will be taught by Mary Crockett who worked alongside Hugh Stoneman helping Frost make his prints here in Cornwall. Stoneman Gallery in Penzance has generously agreed to lend a number of the plates and prints made by Frost to help us teach this course. Monoprinting and Drypoint with Naomi Frears Both monoprinting and drypoint are wonderfully immediate printmaking processes which can inform and reflect the process of painting. Using simple very accessible methods of drawing and applying coloured printing ink, vibrant and unique original prints can be created. Monoprinting and drypoint would be of benefit to artists of all levels of experience to help provide a foundation for new avenues in their work. Inspired by O’Casey with Mary Crockett This course will concentrate on the crisp, sharp lines of dry point and in contrast, carborundum which O’Casey used to create rich textured areas of tone. Mary Crockett who created prints with O’Casey towards the end of his life will guide students throughout the course. Stoneman Graphics who made many of his prints over the years have generously lent plates and prints made by the artist. Printing on Fabric with Claire Armitage This special two day course enables students to design and make their own silk scarves under the guidance of a leading textile designer. The course will involve hands on work creating two designs; taking the scarves through from the design stage to learning how to colour separate, create and use silk screens and make repeat patterns right through to the finishing of the scarves ready to wear. NEW The Potter’s Wheel with Jack Doherty This course focuses on developing throwing skills from techniques for correct clay preparation and the essentials of throwing to centering and creating basic shapes. We then deal with ways of developing wheel made forms including turning, joining and construction techniques. There is a high level of individual tuition throughout the course. Basic knowledge of throwing required. NEW The Vessel – Building Course with Jack Doherty Renowned potter Jack Doherty teaches this inspiring four day course which is suitable for students who have a basic knowledge of throwing and or hand-building. Contemporary ceramic artists use the vessel form as the basis for an exciting canon of work. This course has a high level of individual tuition and offers students the opportunity to develop their ideas in both two and three dimensions. NEW Modelling the Figure with Tim Shaw This exciting three day course is led by renowned sculptor Tim Shaw who will encourage students to explore the figure with dynamic drawing through to modelling the human form in wax. There is a strong emphasis on understanding the natural balance of weight distribution that the figure is bound by in motion. Drawing and modelling will be integrated into each other over the three days - drawing with ink, sticks, brushes, charcoal etc. Tuition will be given on the basics of modelling the figure using wire and wax. Stone Carving with David Paton This four day course is for beginners and those that have a little experience of carving. The aim of the course is to provide each student with the skills and creative confidence to work with stone. The course is structured throughout - progressing through a series of staged approaches closely guided by your tutor, each student produces a small relief carving and a fully in-the-round sculpture. Includes a complimentary visit to The Barbara Hepworth Museum in St Ives. NEW Artists’ Book Weekend with Alex Higlett & Georgina Hounsome We have extended this course from one day to a weekend course as it has been hugely popular and there’s a lot to include. The course explores the Artists’ Book both as a physical object and as a way to showcase sequences of words and images. Georgina and Alex will take students through basic/guerrilla bookbinding techniques and book structures. NEW Collage and Paint with Jesse Leroy Smith This exciting two day course enables students to explore the dynamic use of collage in their painting process. Artists throughout the Twentieth Century have used collage from Picasso and Braque to Pop artist Richard Hamilton and later artists such as Sandra Blow. A hands on course aimed at enlivening the process of painting. NEW Abstract Landscape – Lamorna with Gareth Edwards This two day abstract painting course explores the rock pools, cliffs, woods, shoreline and harbour of Lamorna Valley and Cove. The valley is the most diverse setting to forage for source material for abstract paintings. The course tackles abstract language and strategies to create paintings that exist independently from figurative references. NEW Mark Making with Caroline Pedler This inspiring one day Mark Making course is aimed at helping artists to learn to loosen up and play through drawing and painting. The course will encourage students to get beyond the blank page to a point where your painted and drawn marks intuitively lead your eye and hand. You will be encouraged to find your own artistic voice through experimental play. NEW The Figure with Rose Hilton This new two day course is taught by Rose Hilton who is among the most renowned figure painters in the country. Rose will be guiding students through a day of drawing from the model in pencil and charcoal on day one; emphasising fluid use of line. On day two colour with acrylic paint will be introduced. NEW Oil with a Palette Knife with Neil Pinkett This new course gives students instruction on using the palette knife with oil paint under expert tuition. Through a number of demonstrations from Neil Pinkett who is a well known exponent of the knife technique everyone attending the class will have the opportunity to try out the techniques in the school studios. NEW Drawing Methods & Materials with Kate Walters This fascinating two day course encourages students to explore and consider drawing as a fundamental and essential part of what it is to be human, by looking at a wide range of source material including cave paintings, renaissance altarpieces, and works by more modern artists. Includes use of both traditional and experimental drawing materials. NEW Oil Painting with Jason Walker This valuable three day course will take students through the basics of using oil paint with exercises to help them gain confidence with the medium. This course is suitable for beginners and intermediates with lots of one to one tuition enabling students to get tailored help to their level. This course takes place in the beautiful period school studio and will focus on the still life. NEW Expressive Figure Painting with Marie-Claire Hamon This exciting course encourages students to undertake a wide range of exercises with a dynamic response to the model. The course explores the use of both traditional and unconventional materials and implements, building up a momentum of work. A lively, freeing and fluid approach to the figure. Still Life – Essence of Form with Jessica Cooper An inspiring course which encourages observation and a pairing down of visual information. Jessica will encourage students to look closely at relationships of line, shape and colour. This course offers students of all levels of experience a wonderful opportunity to learn to see subjects with a fresh pair of eyes. Cornish Landscape Painting with Mark Spray This inspiring course encourages students of all levels to work with spontaneity and freedom. Time is spent out in the dramatic coastal landscape. Students are encouraged to use natural materials collected from the landscape in their painting process. Taught by landscape artist and experienced teacher, Mark Spray. Involves some coast path walking. Watercolour Painting with Maggie O’Brien This enjoyable course emphasises the flexibility of watercolour, encouraging freedom of application through broader use of paint, quick studies and large scale work; with additional advice on washes, colour mixing, perspective, pattern and texture. Time will be spent on location in West Penwith and at the School studio. Suitable for all skill levels. Experimental Painting with Jesse Leroy Smith This extremely useful two day course gives artists of all levels the opportunity to explore new, sometimes unfamiliar, painting materials and methods with which they might transform their painting practice. Through a mixture of one to one tuition and demonstrations Tutor Jesse Leroy Smith will help students to push the boundaries of their practice. Coast with Paul Lewin This exciting mixed media course will be taught by respected coastal painter Paul Lewin. Students will paint in the dramatic cliff top locations for which West Cornwall is famous. Paul will share his in depth knowledge of the local coastline and the countless techniques and applications of the broad range of media he uses in his painting. This year we have added some new artist tutors including Rose Hilton, potter Jack Doherty, sculptor Tim Shaw, Kate Walters, Caroline Pedler and Jacqui Knight. The school is situated in the heart of the famous artistic colony of Newlyn a few hundred yards from where the Forbes School of Painting was run by Stanhope Forbes, the ‘Father’ of the Newlyn School of Painters, between 1899 and 1941. We provide a wide range of exciting short art courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, pottery, sculpture, fabric printing and art history. We also have regular Events throughout the year. Short courses 2013∕14Booking a course To enrol on a course please choose which course(s) you would like to attend and consult the Calendar to the left (or the website Calendar) for the dates on which that course runs. Most of the courses are repeated at different times of the year. Once you have chosen a course and date please either book online at www.newlynartschool.co.uk or call the school to book your place with a credit or debit card on 01736 365557. We are always happy to answer questions. All course fees are payable in full at the time of booking. Booking courses some time in advance is recommended to ensure a place. However, we often have a few available spaces on courses up to the day that the course runs so do give us a call if you want to know about availability on courses at short notice. Please note that to make attending courses as straight forward as possible for students we provide all materials at the school. There is a £5.00 materials charge per day per person for all short courses which will be added to your booking fee. For further advice on what things you need to bring with you (depending on the course) such as walking boots, wet weather gear or a sketch pad etc please read the course description on the school website.

General Information We have ample free parking spaces for all students. Newlyn School of Art is on a regular bus route from Penzance Train Station with a bus stop right outside the school. We advise students to read our terms and conditions relating to cancellations. We have a recommended accommodation page found from the upper navigation of our website. Alternatively, we are always happy to advise students over the phone on places to stay in various price brackets.
