Did you know we had a 3000T Ship Lift in France?
Ferries we were impressed with both the speed and quality of SMS’s works and their co-ordination on the ground in Cherbourg. It was a planned, challenging project, and all parties performed well”. SMS has a partnership agreement which allows them to use the Syncrolift facility at the Port of Cherbourg on a ‘turn up and go’ basis. SMS have no permanent base in Cherbourg - the company is built around mobility, flexibility and a dynamic multi-skilled workforce that routinely travel. Hence refits and repairs alongside nationally, and now internationally, are considered the norm.
If you’d like to talk about the shiplift in Cherbourg - or you can foresee any opportunities for it’s utilisation please do reach out either Nick or John.
Our sister co, the Wight Shipyard Company, has just launched Red Jet 7. We’ve two more boats in build for Mexico.
Bob Gray, the Founder of SMS, has sadly this month decided to ‘step down’. He’s already sorely missed and we’d welcome him back anytime - thank you for everything Bob! We genuinely miss you and we appreciate all you did for us and SMS.
Global Services is trading ahead of budget, and has extensively supported the provision of goods to MY Alicia.
The team at SMS Southampton are chasing not one, but two Superyacht refits; 2019 & 2020 could be very busy!
According to The Sunday Times Wightlink is up for sale for £300m - any takers? Interesting timing as their new diesel electric hybrid ship is soon due to sail over the horizon.

GROUP GOSSIP
Let’s talk about Cherbourg.
We’ve an exclusive partnership agreement with the Chamber of Commerce in Cherbourg that allows us to turn-up and use their 3000T Rolls Royce ship lift as, and when, we want. A great example would be last month’s docking of the Condor Rapide. The lift is 90m x 32m and is located just 75 miles from the Solent - it’s a more effective solution for Solent centric operators than the ship repair yards in the North East and South West.
John Webb, SMS’s Technical Manager for the refit comments: “our senior team, including Nick Jalie and myself, have been docking vessels in Cherbourg for the best part of 15 years now - SMS have the ‘knowhow’ and ‘experience’. This particular program of works benefited from the scheduled removal of the vessel from service with works then undertaken on the Wartsila waterjet propulsion system on POME (port outer main engine), minor structural repairs and planned electrical upgrades. Whilst the refit cycle was challenging time wise we returned the ship to her Owners on schedule”.
In conclusion, the customer, Rob Loder, Ship Manager for Condor Ferries comments: “as Condor
