Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)

“Using this public source openly and without resorting to illegal means, it is possible to gather at least 80% of information about the enemy. The percentage varies depending on the government's policy on freedom of the press and publication. It is possible to gather information through newspapers, magazines, books, periodicals, official publications, and enemy broadcasts. Attention should also be given to the opinion, comments, and jokes of common people.”

Human Intelligence (HUMINT)

Human Intelligence (HUMINT)

“Elicitation works so well for several reasons:• Most people have the desire to be polite, especially to

strangers.• Professionals want to appear well informed and

intelligent.• If you are praised, you will often talk more and divulge

more.• Most people would not lie for the sake of lying.• Most people respond kindly to people who appear

concerned about them.”

Social Engineering in Attacks

“Attackers are migrating away from exploiting vulnerabilities and focusing more on exploiting the human element by convincing users to download and execute malicious content. This is a testament to the fact that attackers always take the easiest route. It is easier for attackers to use social engineering to trick their victims than it is for those attackers to find ways to bypass the current mitigating technologies.”

“Through a series of private investigation firms, law firms and consultants, Nestle’s agents dove into garbage Dumpsters outside Mars’ New Jersey offices to retrieve bags of trash. The operation was so sophisticated that the operatives replaced each bag they took with “fake” trash, so maintenance men would not notice the bags of trash they just tossed out were missing.”

Severe Thunderstorms

Unplug any electronic equipment before the storm arrives

Stay indoors Avoid contact with plumbing. Plumbing and bathroom

fixtures can conduct electricity If you feel your hair stand on end, squat low to the

ground on the balls of your feet. Make yourself the smallest target possible while minimizing your contact to the ground.

If driving, seek shelter immediately, if none is available pull over until the storm passes.

Page 101: Newcomers slides 2014

AMC’s Showcase Wing…Enabling Rapid Global Mobility

Tornadoes

A violent, rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground

On average Illinois experiences about 46 tornadoes a year

Typically happen between the months of April and June, but can occur any time during the year

Indicators: Dark, greenish sky Large hail Wind becomes calm aka “the calm before

the storm” Loud roar, similar to a train Funnel Cloud

Page 102: Newcomers slides 2014

AMC’s Showcase Wing…Enabling Rapid Global Mobility

Tornadoes

Tornado WATCH: Tornado Conditions are Favorable

Tornado WARNING: Tornado has been sighted

If in a sturdy building, stay indoors and move to the lowest level possible

If in a trailer or mobile home, get out! If in your vehicle

If getting hit by debris stay in your vehicle with your head below the windows and covered with your hands, blanket, coat, or other cushion

If you can safely get lower than the level of the roadway exit your vehicle and do so.

Avoid overpasses and bridges Don’t try to outrun the tornado!

Floods

Overflow of water from rain and/or melting snow Most common natural disaster in the US Flood Watch

Flooding is possible Flash Flood Watch

Flash flooding is possible. Be prepared to move to higher ground.

Flood Warning A flood is occurring or will occur soon.

Flash Flood Warning A flash flood is occurring seek higher ground ON FOOT

immediately. Homeowner’s insurance DOES NOT COVER flood

damage Floodsmart.gov offers Flood Maps that will determine

what kind of flood insurance you will need.

Floods

Evacuation Turn off utilities and disconnect electrical appliances

(unless you are wet or standing in water) Bring in outside furniture Move essential items to an upper floor

Avoid driving through flood waters 6 inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger

cars 12 inches will float many vehicles 2 ft will carry away most vehicles away including SUVs

and pick-ups Don’t drive around barricades, stick to designated

evacuation routes Walking through flood waters

6 inches of rushing water is enough to knock you down If you HAVE to walk, use a stick to check the firmness of

the ground in front of you.

Page 105: Newcomers slides 2014

AMC’s Showcase Wing…Enabling Rapid Global Mobility

Earthquakes

A sudden movement of the earth’s crust followed by a series of vibrations

Illinois is between two major seismic zones During a 50 year time span, there is a 25% to 40%

chance of a magnitude 6.0 or greater Most occur without us noticing There is no way to predict an earthquake If indoors, drop to the ground, take cover, and hold on

until the shaking stops Most injuries occur when people try to run outside of

buildings If outdoors, stay there move away from buildings,

streetlights, and utility wires. If driving, stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in

your vehicle. DO NOT stop underneath an overpass.
