Restoring a part of history

I t is a sound that has not been heard in 100 years - shots from a Nordenfelt gun ringing out across Newcastle Harbour.

The 130-year-old 1.5 inch gun, housed at Fort Scratchley, has been meticulously refur-bished thanks to a $20,000 donation from Hunter Water and last week, it was fired for the first time in more than a century.

Installed in 1892 as a defence gun to protect the entrance to the harbour, in 1914 the Nordenfelt was moved to Sydney where it was stripped of its parts and left to rust for more than 70 years.

Fort Scratchley Historical Society life member, Andrew Griffith said it had taken 30 years to bring the historic gun back to Newcastle and return it to working order.

“30 years ago if you said [this gun] was going to fire I would have laughed,” he said. “Even 12 months ago I’d have said it wouldn’t happen.

“The gun was stuck open out in the weather for nearly 80 years and it just rusted up so everything had to be taken apart, cleaned and then re-put together.

“A lot of companies in Newcastle volunteered their time and materials to get it done and without those people this gun wouldn’t have happened.”

The new addition makes Fort Scratchley the only place in Australia where the public can witness the regular firing of six historic guns. The Nordenfelt will be fired on Australia Day, the Queen’s Birth-day, ANZAC Day and regular fort open days.

Abbott “on the nose” but best to let the public decide his fateYou may have read about Prime Minister, Tony Abbott receiving a verbal dressing down from a Liberal supporter on Melbourne talkback radio last week.

“You’re on the nose with Liberal voters and that’s a real concern to me because I don’t want to see you give the keys to Bill Shorten at the Lodge,” Mr Abbott was told.

I think the caller was right that Mr Abbott is becoming more unpopular with Liberal voters but I also agreed with the Prime Minister when he went on to say that changing leaders in the middle of a term was not the answer, as the former Labor government had shown.

Like a lot of people, I have a real problem with prime ministers changing mid-term. By all means let the Government have a leader-ship spill, but if a new leader is decided upon it should automatically mean an election is called.

The only stipulation I would put on this process would be to say that a leadership chal-lenge could not happen in the first half of the term.

The Opposition can change leader as many times as they want, as far as I’m concerned.

I feel quite disillusioned with both Federal lead-ers at the moment. Mr Abbott seems to be able to find controversy with everything he says, while Labor’s Bill Shorten doesn’t seem to say a great deal apart from bagging the PM.

Admittedly, as an opposition leader you need to take advantage of every opportunity to point out the Government’s mistakes but let’s start hearing some solutions to the problems.

We have at least 18 months until the next Federal election. Right at this moment, would you be prepared to bet that both leaders will still be in their current position?

I can’t believe how fast the rugby league season has come around again.

For those who weren’t aware, the NRL Nines are on this weekend in Auckland.

I think all the players will be better for the experience of last year’s inauguraltournament.

Most sides quickly figured out that even with four less players on each team, field posi-tion was still very important and that strong hits-ups and quick play-the-balls from the forwards were still very important.

Like all teams the Knights won’t be sending their strongest possible team, but there are some exciting players amongst the following squad: Sione Mata’utia, Jake Mamo, Dane Gagai, Chanel Mata’utia, Carlos Tuimavave, Jarrod Mullen, Tyrone Roberts, Pat Mata’utia, Adam Clydsdale, Paterika Vaivai, Tyler Randell, Chris Houston, Robbie Rochow, Nathan Ross, Korbin Sims, Joseph Tapine, Jack Stockwell, Danny Levi.

I have a real problem with Prime Ministers changing mid-term

F or Steve Dewar education is the key to a cleaner city.

The semi-retired history teacher and Toronto resident was last week recog-nised for his efforts keeping the Lake free from rubbish, taking home the Volunteer of the Year award in Lake Macquarie City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards.

An active member of the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, Mr Dewar played a key role in spearhead-ing the group’s Tossers Can Be Binners anti-littering campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the impact discarded rubbish can have on the environment.

The campaign helped bring about a 20 kilogram reduction in the total amount of litter in the Toronto shopping precinct from September 2013 to September 2014.

Mr Dewar said the campaign was about changing behaviours.

“It was more of an education because you can’t always be right there when people are chucking the rubbish so the idea was that we would impress on everyone that Toronto is a tidy town.”

Upcoming free information evenings presented by Turnbull Hill Lawyers

If you’ve been left out of a Will, or treated unfairly in a Will, you can most certainly do something about it...

Adrian CorbouldSenior Lawyer

Hi, I’m Adrian Corbould, Senior Lawyer (Turnbull Hill Lawyers) with many years experience in the area of disputed and contested Wills and I am an expert in helping people get what they’re fairly entitled to. My years of experience show that many Wills are not legally binding and can be successfully challenged if they are unfair or have left people out unreasonably. Spouses, children and defacto partners of the deceased may be eligible to claim ... and so may others in certain circumstances. You have a limited time from the date of death to lodge a claim so it’s always best to act quickly to get professional guidance on what your entitlements are. People will be delighted to know that often the legal fees of challenging a Will are paid out of the estate of the person who has passed away ... there are some simple conditions which I can explain. There have been many changes in the law over recent years leaving many questions to be answered...

On Wednesday, 11 February from 6pm to 7.30pm I will be presenting a free information session “Have you been

left out of a Will, or not properly provided for? Is the Will binding, can you challenge the Will? Perhaps you’re an Executor needing to defend a claim?”On Thursday, 29 January from 6pm to 7.30pm Alan Wright will present “If you’ve separated or you’re planning to separate, find out what you’re entitled to .”On Wednesday, 4 February from 6pm to 7.30pm John Teague will present “Buying or Selling Property” ... key things you need to know and do!”On Thursday, 12 February from 6pm to 7.30pm Warwick Gilbertson will present “What an Executor or an Administrator needs to know and do when administering a deceased’s estate.”

All free information sessions are held at our offices, 29 Smith Street, Charlestown. To reserve your place, phone Jackie Doyle on 4904 8000 or register online at

I t may have been a tough six months for his party, but Liberal candidate for Charlestown Jason Pauling says he’s

still proudly conservative. The 43-year-old Lake Macquarie council-

lor, who has named as the Liberal Party candidate for the embattled electorate last week, told the Post he believed voters were ready to trust a Liberal MP again.

“[NSW Premier] Mike Baird came to the Hunter last year and promised to atone for the mistakes of a couple of MPs,” he said.

“We didn’t run candidates at the by-elec-tions as part of that promise but now it’s time to draw a line in the sand.”

Mr Pauling is the first Liberal candidate to be endorsed for the seat of Charlestown since allegations of illegal campaign dona-tions at the Independent Commission Against Corruption in August last year forced the resignation of former Charles-town MP Andrew Cornwell.

“Andrew [Cornwell] did the wrong thing but there is no doubt that a Liberal Govern-ment has been good for this region,” Mr Pauling said.

“I stand proud as a Liberal and I want to represent, be heard and do the right thing

by the people of Charlestown.”Mr Pauling said, if elected, he would

work to curb anti-social behaviour in the Charlestown CBD by supporting youth outreach programs.

A former chair of the Lake Macquarie Combined Chamber of Commerce and former president of Business Charlestown and the Lake Macquarie Business Club, Mr Pauling said he would also be a fierce campaigner for the local small business sector.

Mr Pauling will face off against Lake Macquarie Mayor and incumbent Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison at the March 21 election.

Mr Pauling said he had concerns about Ms Harrison’s ability to effectively juggle her roles as both Mayor and MP.

Ms Harrison said she had been working hard since the by-election to restore trust to politics in the region and was proud to stand by her record.

“I encourage everyone to Google the name of every candidate and see what they have achieved for this community,” she said.

“I’m focused on the issues - fighting to preserve TAFE and health services, improve public transport and bring more jobs to the region.”

K ath Elliott, an independent candi-date in Newcastle City Council’s upcoming Ward 3 by-election

says she wants to put a stop to the party politics that are threatening the future of the city.

A Hamilton resident and mother of two, Ms Elliott is the former chief of the Newcastle Alliance and responsible for introducing the fare free bus zone and Livesites program in the CBD.

She said she was inspired to get into politics after volunteering as campaign manager for John Church’s 2013 tilt at the Federal seat of Shortland.

“I learnt a lot about politics that year,” she said.

“Working with a major party, a lot of it I didn’t like, but what I did like was the connection with people and being able to change things.

“In Council, if I’m elected, as an inde-pendent I can do what I want - if the community doesn’t want something, I won’t be voting for it.

“It is liberating to be truly able to repre-sent the community without someone else telling you that you can’t.”

Ms Elliott said if elected, she would

advocate for better parks and local amen-ities in the suburbs, accessible childcare, the “sensitive and sensible” development of the rail corridor, funding for the rede-velopment of the Newcastle Art Gallery, and sustainable rate increases.

She said she was concerned that Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes had ignored feedback from the community when she used her casting vote to seek a 46.9 per cent rate increase from the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) last November.

“Why ask for community views if you were just going to ignore them and ram through the highest rate rise anyway,” she said.

“Labor and the Greens were always going to push for the most money from ratepayers to fund their pet projects.

“The last thing we want to see is a grab for rate revenue to fund their wasteful spending.”

Ward 3 residents will go to the polls to elect a new councillor on Saturday, February 21.

Independent candidate vows to put community’s interests first

The field for next month’s Newcastle City Council Ward 3 by-election has been decided.

Five candidates will contest the Febru-ary 21 by-election.

The former head of the Newcastle Alli-ance, Kath Elliott (Independent) will appear first on the ballot paper, followed by Independent candidate Allen Warren, the Greens’ Nevenka Bareham, Arjay Martin, and Labor Party candidate Declan Clausen. Only residents of Ward 3 will be required to vote.

Ward 3 includes parts of Wallsend, Jesmond, Waratah, New Lambton, Lamb-ton and Kotara. For more information visit www.elections.nsw.gov.au.

Three-time Paralympic gold medalist Kurt Fearnley has added yet another accolade to his list of achievements, being named Newcastle Citizen of the Year.

The 33-year-old Hamilton resident was announced as the city’s top citizen at an awards ceremony at City Hall on Australia Day. An inspiring world-class athlete, the four-time Paralympic wheelchair racer is also a passionate disability advocate.

Kirk Upton took home the Young Citizen of the Year award for his efforts promot-ing physical and mental health through the University of Newcastle and the Fort Scratchley Historical Society were named Community Group of the Year.

M ember for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery will lobby for upgrades to Beresfield’s and Tarro’s

Anderson Drive if she is re-elected on March 28.

Ms Hornery met with Newcastle City Council Labor councillor, Jason Dunn last week to discuss the needs of the suburbs.

Beresfield and Tarro previously fell into the Cessnock electorate, but due to boundary redistribution are now part of Wallsend.

“This is a big, long stretch of road, but local government may not be able to undertake the extensive repairs that this roads needs and I will certainly lobby for that,” Ms Hornery said.

“I haven’t talked to senior members of the party but I’m certainly willing to have a conversation with them about that being a priority for the Wallsend elector-ate and it is [a priority], and it will be [a priority].”

Cr Dunn said that he often received complaints from residents about the condition of the road.

“Most people in the area drive through here one time or another each day and it really is in a terrible condition,” he said.

“It’s really just a patchwork of repairs and it’s probably one of the biggest issues raised with me in Beresfield and Tarro.”

Mr Dunn also said that he would to

see internal roads sealed in the Tarro recreation area and improvement to the facilities at Beresfield pool.

Liberal Councillor, David Compton could not be contacted for comment.

With schools back this week, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Education and Communities, Greg Prior, welcomed more than 780,000 new and returning students to the 2015 school year.

“We are pleased to again offer important back-to-school advice for parents via the Department of Education and Communi-ties website,” Mr Prior said.

“Starting school can sometimes be a bit daunting, especially for those attending primary or high school for the first time. A visit to www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au can help with students’ and parents’ back-to-school needs.

The website has useful information, such as a checklist for getting students ready to head back to school, handy hints on homework, including planner templates and study tips, answers to frequently-asked questions about uniforms, sun safety, curriculum and technology, public school term dates, educational games for students, videos with advice from teach-ers on everything from preparing to start high school, to dealing with bullying or depression

“Our school jargon buster will also help parents sort out their CAPAs from their KLAs, and explain why BEC and TAS are not girls’ names,” Mr Prior said.

Assistance is also available to parents and caregivers via the Back-to-School Hotline (1300 738 338). The hotline operates between 8:30am and 4:30pm weekdays from Tuesday, 27 January until Friday, 13 February.

B y the time Booral’s Rylee Holswor-thy was two, her mother, Amy, knew something was wrong.

“She was progressing really well and was the happiest little kid, but she still wasn’t speaking and started having these really bad meltdowns,” Ms Holsworthy said.

“She was hitting and kicking me, pull-ing at her baby brother and had a total lack of interest in other children.

“We started to think that something wasn’t quite right.”

Ms Holsworthy and her husband, Jason, were correct, and Rylee was diagnosed with autism at age two-and-a-half.

Three years down the track Ms Holswor-thy is adamant that without the help from Autism Spectrum Australia’s early inter-vention program, Rylee, now 6, wouldn’t have been able to start kindergarten in a satellite class at Tarro this year.

She said that although the program’s services provided simple things like organising appointments and filling out forms, they had made the world of the difference.

“They seem like little things, but when you’re struggling to come to terms with

the diagnosis it was such a great help to have them,” Ms Holsworthy said.

“They made me grounded and set the path. We wouldn’t have had success without them.”

From there, Rylee was able to enter a pre-kindergarten program at Thornton’s Hunter Aspect School last year, where Ms Holsworthy said her speech came along in leaps and bounds, and is soon to start ballet lessons, something that previously

would not have been possible.“I don’t think people realise how hard

and isolating it is for a family with a child with autism,” she said.

“Little things would turn out life into a nightmare, but now she wants to do things that all the other kids do that people take for granted.

“She still has her moments where she struggles, but the change has been incredible.”

Work on the Hunter Expressway will see changed traffic conditions in place near the M1 Pacific Motorway from today (Wednesday) until Friday, between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

The northbound exit ramp from the M1 Pacific Motorway to both Newcastle and Branxton will also be closed from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11 between 8pm and 4am for work to replace red panels above the tunnel.

Motorists travelling toward Newcastle are advised that one lane of the express-way will be closed for work on the road shoulder and traffic control will be set up on the northbound exit ramp from the M1 Pacific Motorway to the Newcastle Link Road.

Northbound vehicles on the M1 Pacific Motorway travelling west on the Hunter Expressway or east on the Newcastle Link Road will need to exit at George Booth Drive toward Newcastle Link Road via Cameron Park Drive.

Detours and reduced speed limits will only be in place at night and all lanes and ramps will be open and operating as normal during the day and peak travel times.

For more information about the project visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au and follow the links to the Hunter Expressway project or phone toll free 1800 001 267.

This week, students of all ages - including mine - will head back to school to start a year of growth and development through education.

For some, such as those starting kindergarten, this will be their first taste of school life, and for others it will be their final year of study before commencing a career, apprenticeship or tertiary education.

I wish all of our students the best of luck on their first days of school and hope they flourish as the year progresses.

These students all play a vital role in the community of Lake Macquarie and their input on important issues that affect the area is invaluable to Council.

The Lake Macquarie Youth Advisory Council is just one avenue that young people can use to provide their feedback into Council decisions.

Membership to the Youth Advisory Council is open to young people living in Lake Macquarie who are aged between 12 and 24 years old.

If you are, or know of, a young person that would like to see a change in your community or have a suggestion for the way things can be improved, I encourage you to join the Youth Advisory Council.

Visit www.lakemac.com.au/services/youth/advisory-council to find out how.

As we are returning to school this week, it is a timely reminder for all motorists to adhere to the road rules and slow down to the 40km/h speed limit when in school zones and to follow the directions of parking signage in the areas surround-ing schools.

Parking or stopping on or near a pedestrian crossing, double parking or parking in a bus zone all attract hefty fines and put children’s lives at unnecessary risk.

Parking signs around schools are designed to save the lives of our children, and it is important that we remind parents to obey these parking signs when dropping off and picking up children from school.

LAKE MACQUARIE MATTERS

all council matters: lakemac.com.au

Community safety is always one of Council’s top priorities, and this certainly includes the safety of children when it comes to parking and road safety in school zones.

Our parking officers have identified a number of areas of concern in this regard including:

• drivers picking up/dropping off on or too close to school pedestrian crossings

• drivers picking up/dropping off in no stopping and bus zones• drivers stopping for long periods of time in no parking zones,

and • drivers parking for too long in drop-off and pickup zones. The park safe, stay safe program has been designed to partner

with schools, principals, parents, students and the community to improve road safety around schools.

We have developed a range of materials to help educate every-one about how to park safe, stay safe.

Parking officers will also be active around schools in the coming weeks to make sure that safety rules are understood and are being observed.

Please keep these tips in mind when dropping off and picking up your students:

1. Kids look to you to keep them safe, so make sure you park safe so our kids can stay safe.

2. Most schools have kiss and ride zones for drop-offs and pick-ups, these work best if you: only stop for two minutes, stay close to your car and stop as close to the head of the zone as possible to allow easy access for everyone.

3. Parking officers will be out and about at schools to inform drivers, parents and teachers.

4. Talk to our officers or check out our website for more info www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au.

Parking officers will be visiting the following schools in Febru-ary and March: New Lambton Public, The Junction Public, St. Joseph’s Primary The Junction, Belair Public, Adamstown Public, Wallsend South Public, Maryland Public, Glendore Public and Newcastle East Public.

HISTORYTurning back Time

They have stood proud on the former BHP steel-works site at Mayfield for nearly a century.

But now, three physi-cal links to Newcastle’s industrial past to are set to be demolished.

The Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association had been fighting to protect the old medical centre, pattern store and master mechanic’s office and last year secured an interim heritage order cover-ing the buildings.

But earlier this month, NSW Heritage Minister Rob Stokes revoked the interim order, deeming the buildings to be of no significance to the state, clearing the way for the Port of Newcastle to demol-ish the buildings as part of its ongoing decontamination efforts at the site.

Newcastle Industrial Heritage Associa-tion vice-president Aub Brooks said he

was saddened by the State Government’s decision to lift the interim order.

“My family started working at the BHP in 1915,” he said.

“My grandfather worked there, my father, my brother, and I worked there for 38 years so there is a lot of family history. There were 11,558 people working at that steelworks in 1964, so while the Heritage Minister may not believe these buildings are significant to the people of NSW, it is significant for a lot of us.

“I look at these building and I can see all the people who used to be there and what happened around them.”

“For me personally, it will be bloody sad to see them come down.”

Mr Brooks said the art deco style medi-cal centre was particularly significant as many workers who were injured or died at the steelworks were treated there.

He described the ornate 1930s master mechanic’s office as the place from

which the BHP was built - where deci-sions regarding construction were made, plans were drawn up and orders were put it.

The pattern store, constructed in 1917, may not look like much, but its merit lies in the materials used in its construction.

The sandstone bricks that make up the structure came from Morpeth’s Ducken-field House - a 45 room mansion built by John Eales in the 1800s.

Mr Brooks said the Association had requested some of the stones from the pattern shop be preserved for use in a permanent memorial to workers who died on the job at the steelworks.

Created by Branxton-based artist Will Maguire, the forged steel memorial will be unveiled in time for the 100 year anniversary of the BHP Newcastle steel-works in June and will sit near the listed administration building in the heritage precinct.

Doyou believe that

you can have and deserve to live the best life

possible?

ANTHONY PIGGOTTPharmacist ofPiggott’spharmacies

What does your ultimate life look like?

FINANCE

I’d like to ask you to let go of your New Years’ resolutions, which let’s be honest, you were probably never committed to in the first place.

Let’s reflect on why you wanted to make these resolutions in the first place. Was it to support you on your journey to live the best life that you can and that you deserve.

Let’s focus on what your ultimate life looks like? Are you healthy, happy, spending lots of time with your family and friends, not worried about money or the future?

I, and the team I work with, truly believe that everyone has choices and has the right to exercise those choices to create the life that they desire and deserve.

So it’s time to make a choice. Do you believe that you can have and deserve to live the best

life possible that’s just right for you? If yes, then here are a few tools I’d like to share to support

you:1. Shift your focus from thinking about what you don’t want

in life. Start focusing on what you already have and how you’d live your life if everything was taken care of for you. Would you be spending more time with your family, would the first thing you do in the morning be to go to the beach? Once you are clear on these things, you can then start applying them with the below two tools.

2. If you require ‘money’ to do the things in life that are important to you, then set some money aside for the things that are important to you. For example: set up a bank account purely for holidays and another for your kids schooling, if these are the things are important to you.

3. If it’s ‘time’ that you need to do the things that are impor-tant to you, then put the things that are most important to you in your diary or calendar first, as they should be your priority and the other things can work them.

I invite you to start living the life that you deserve and the life that is the best possible life for you today.

Disclaimer: This editorial provides general information only. Before making any decisions, consult a financial planner.

A national survey found that around 90% of Australian second-ary school students had tried alcohol by the age of 14 and that around 70% of 17 year olds had consumed alcohol in the month before the survey.

Alcohol acts as a central nervous system depressant and alcohol related harm comes from a combination of the amount of alcohol consumed and various factors such as age, gender, body size, nutrition, drinking experience and social factors.

The Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drink-ing Alcohol based on research by the National Health and Medi-cal Research Council state that ‘for children and young people under 18 years of age, not drinking is the safest option’ and that ‘children under 15 years of age are at greatest risk of harm from drinking.’ The guidelines are based upon health risks to teenag-ers, and there are legal risks and social consequences as well.

FREE QUOTE WITH NO OBLIGATIONCALL RELIANCE ROOF RESTORATION ON 1300 300 748 FOR A QUOTE.

YOU’LL BE PLACED UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO OBLIGATION AND IT’S FREE.

The Shocking Truth About Roof RestorationIf you’ve ever been concerned about the condition of your roof, then this could be the most important article you read this year.

Unscrupulous roof restoration salespeople have been telling unsuspecting homeowners that they need a full roof restoration (clean, repair, re-point, seal, and paint) when in many cases all that they needs is a simple repair.

This has been going on for years but in recent times has reached epidemic levels. Here’s what typically happens...

A telemarketer or door-to-door canvasser offers you a free roof inspection. Sounds like a good idea right..?

It is a good idea unless the roof inspector (usually a salesperson) does what unfortunately happens in many of these instances: he or she will grossly exaggerate the problems and insist that you really need a full roof restoration when perhaps you don’t.

Now there are many instances where a roof restoration is

But there are also many instances where all you many need is a simple roof repair. Local company Reliance Roof Restoration offer a

free roof safely inspection where you get the option of actually seeing your roof close up. Any problems are actually pointed out to you.

That way, you can be certain that any problems they advise you of are real and not made up or exaggerated. You can either accompany the inspector on the roof, or if you’re unable to do that, you’ll be shown photos taken on a high resolution digital camera.

will advise you of that. If all that you need is a small repair, then Reliance will advise you of that.

would be happy to provide a quote for this service. If you would like a quote on having your roof restored, you’ll get $600 off the quote if you call by next Monday. By the way, you’ll be placed under absolutely no obligation whatsoever and this service is free for anyone with a home that’s over 12 years in age.

Here’s what one satisfied client said of their experience in dealing with Reliance Roof Restoration:

“A professional approach by all associated with the job. I was impressed with your attention to detail and advice on other (small) problems. Follow-up

inspection and after job touch-up work was particularly impressive.

The friendly nature of all the workers made them a pleasure to deal with. I would have no hesitation in recommending ‘Reliance Roof Restoration’ to anyone

wanting their roof restored.” Ken Durham

So if you are concerned about the condition of your roof and you’d like a free safety inspection, or if you’d like a free quote on having your roof restored, then call Reliance on 1300 300 748 or visit their website at:www.relianceroof.com. Remember, if you call by next Monday you get $600 off the quote of a roof restoration. Call 1300 300 748 NOW!

Another huge year atBelmont Dance Centre

Aleader in the Newcastle dance education industry for the last 42 years, Belmont Dance Centre is looking forward to welcoming it’s

students and new enrolments in 2015. After another highly successful year in

the competition arena culminating in the Christmas showcase production of The Nutcracker ballet in December 2014, the studios proprietors, Karen -Ann Thomas and Jenny Langford and their staff are preparing for an even more exciting 2015.

Offering a wide variety of dance genres from the traditional classical ballet and tap, Belmont Dance Centre also runs classes in cutting edge USA style jazz, hip hop and contemporary dance for the aspiring student.

Parents can rest assured that all teach-

ers are thoroughly trained and registered teachers working in an up to date air conditioned premises with purpose built dance floors, barres and mirrors.

Although many of Karen and Jenny’s former students have graduated and gone on to work in the professional dance industry in Australia and throughout the world, all age levels from three years are welcome to join. Classes such as Dance Kool hip hop and Wiggle and Giggle remain a popular choice for the younger or more casual student, as do their pre-school ballet programme, Kickstarters jazz and First steps tap classes.

For aspiring young dancers, classical ballet classes are a must, and many students sit annually for their Royal Academy of Dance ballet exams.

W ith summer well and truly here, there’s nothing more refreshing than cooling down in your pool.

With the recent hot weather and humidity, a little extra TLC is needed to keep your pool in top condition.

“The hotter the weather gets, the more the pool is used, and the more chlorine that is required to keep it sanitised,” Swimart Australasian manager, Chris Fitzmaurice said.

“Algae blooms in the heat and chlorine is the best defence against algae. Especially now with the ongoing hot weather, pools aren’t cooling down overnight, so the chlorine demand remains high.

“If you have a salt pool, you can use the ‘super chlorinate’ button on your salt chlorinator to fix the problem.”

The safest approach is to take a pool water sample from below elbow depth to your local Swimart store to check it for balance and sanitisation.

Another demand on pool water is the level of phosphates in the water. Algae love phosphates and feed on them.

Phosphates are introduced to the pool primarily via bird and bat droppings. Roof water added into the pool and swimming costumes washed in detergent containing phosphates are other potential sources.

Chlorine alone can’t eliminate phos-phates. However, a chemical called Phosphate Starver will eradicate the phos-phates so the chlorine can work on killing the algae.

Your local Swimart store will also be able

to advise on pH levels. If the pH is too high, you can get scaling on the surface of your pool or chlorinator.

This can be addressed by adding acid to the water.

If too low, the water will start to hurt eyes

and skin and make you feel itchy. It can also etch away the surface of the pool. This can be fixed by adding ‘buffer’ or alkali.

Correct pH levels make the pool comfort-able to swim in. If pH levels are incorrect, it can affect the efficiency of the chlorine.

Increasing temperatures mean its time to manage algea and phosphate levels in your pool

Raymond Terrace Jets impress in pre-season pennants

Lawn Bowls

The highlight of the opening round of the Beresfield No.1 grade pre-season pennant competition was the impres-

sive win by current Newcastle District No.1 grade pennant champions the Raymond Terrace Jets. The Jets enjoyed success on all three rinks in defeating Kahibah 61/35. Australian representative Matthew Baus led the way, downing Howard Smith 21/11, Jason Stokes accounted for Tony Fal-cocchio 23/14 and Lennon Scott beat Bill Ahoy 17/10.

Hunter District clubs Kurri Kurri and East Cessnock also recorded solid wins. Kurri Kurri downed Kotara 55/47, with Aaron Appleby’s 24/16 win over Keiron Lott proving the difference between the two sides as Brodie Pitham edged out Martin Ball 16/14 and Brendon Baker lost 17/15 to Gavin Kelly. East Cessnock proved too strong for Halekulani winning by 8 shots, 52/44, Jon Dimopolous 17/10 victory over Lindsay Willding proving decisive.

Port Stephens clubs Nelson Bay and Soldiers Point had contrasting wins. Nelson Bay whitewashed East Maitland 64/37, with Shannon Gittoes leading the way defeating Chris Dunn 24/9. Mark Watt beat Mark Evans 19/13 and New Zealand international Richard Girvan downed Rod Lawton 21/15. Soldiers Point struggled to overcome Valentine 49/43, with the triumphant skippers being Lee Such and Jason Pietraszek. Such beat Bob Bradley 19/12 and Pietraszek accounted for Jacob McMurray 18/14.

The Newcastle District fours cham-pionship commences next Saturday. Defending titleholders Dennis Fan, Ian Barrett and Damian Robb have a new team member in Troy Barrett replacing Jay Walls (Charlestown).

They appear evenly matched in their first round match against the Teralba quartet of Rod Lawrence, Brad Wicks, Tony Ross and Michael Kedwell at Beresfield. The final is scheduled to be played on Sunday, February 8 at Beresfield.

Contenders emerge in race to the finals

With the holiday break and the lu-crative SCG Cup behind them, NDCA clubs are focussing on the run into the finals.

It appears that even at this stage of the sea-son, the quest for glory in 2014/15 is over for Wallsend, Wests, Cardiff Boolaroo, Newcastle City and Waratah Mayfield.

In saying that, with 12 pre-Christmas out-right defeats between them, these clubs’ per-formances could have a say in the makeup of the finals. Wallsend under a new captain and City with some English reinforcements could display improvement between now and then.

Here's my assessment of the top finals con-tenders.

MEREWETHER - predictably the Lions sit on top of the ladder and remain the favourites for the title. They have pace bowling strike power in Mark Cameron and Sam Gilmour, whilst left arm spinner Tim O’Neill can apply the brakes should opposition batsmen get on top. Their batting led by skipper Simon Moore has a line-up laced with representative players.

UNIVERSITY - a largely new look side this year, the students and appear to be the side most likely to challenge. Jesse Major and Matt Gawthrop will be key wickets for the Merewether's Simon Moore will be a key player in the finals. Photo: Paul Allan

PAUL ROBERTSON opposition to snare in the big games, while a deep bowling attack led by skipper Luke Bird has potential to rip deep into opposition batting.

HAMILTON WICKHAM - it took a while for Hamwicks to get into gear but with three qual-ity all-rounders in the Webber brothers and Mark Dries, plus the classy batting of Josh Trappel, they have the potential to beat any team on their day. Flying under the radar, as opposed to being competition leaders, may actually ease some of the pressure they seem-ingly have put on themselves in finals in recent years.

BELMONT - three pre-Christmas outright wins have offset some poor performances against lesser opposition. They rely heavily on Newcastle skipper Mark Littlewood and vet-eran paceman Jace Lawson who have been sensational this season, but will need contri-butions from others if they are to consolidate their finals position and be a force at the busi-ness end of the year.

Of the remaining three teams with finals claims, their fate will largely depend on the continuation of the good form of key players, namely batsman Jeff Goninan for Stockton Raymond Terrace and all-rounders Joe Price and Chris Connors for Toronto Workers and Charlestown respectively.

Time will tell.
