hardship some assistance with subject fees is available from the Student Assistance Scheme. Please see Ms Regan or a deputy principal to lodge an application. At the end of the term Mr Stan Stankewycz retires. Mr Stankewycz’s expertise with careers will be missed. The role of careers teacher will be temporary shared between Ms Longobardi and Ms Murphy as Career and Transition teacher. We wish Mr Stankewycz a long and healthy retirement. Our Creative and Performing Arts students have been OUT THERE big time in the last few weeks. The year 10 Working Artist class organised the successful a different perspective exhibition in an old shop in the mall. This was a stunning show organised by the students. Well done to the organisers and to the staff who assisted with the show, especially Mr Pickard. Several students have participated in StarStruck, supported by Ms Hudson, Mrs Wright and Mr Danvers. Two students have been selected to attend State Drama camp. Well done to the Mock Trial team on their recent win. We look forward to more successes. The school is hosting a number of prac teachers who are completing the school service part of their training. I am confident that these trainee teachers will be enriched and learn much from their interactions at Newcastle High School. The P&C has been asking lots of questions regarding the recent work that has been taking place across the school site. This Friday I am meeting with the local member. Ms Jodie MacKay MP, the Regional Director , Ms Robyn McKerihan and the P&C executive to find out more about what is planned for the school. In the meantime time the school has been granted $48,000 to upgrade the basketball courts as part of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge. Thanks Ms Keneally we can do with the money and well done to Mr Wagner who wrote the submission. I was delighted to read a letter from the organisers of the Jindabyne camp commenting on how well behaved the year 9 students were on their recent excursion. This is the standard of behaviour that is expected of all students. Unfortunately this type of behaviour was not evident during a recent football match against Warners Bay High School. The behaviour of some students will have serious consequences not only for individuals, but the whole team, to say nothing of the reputation of the school. Very disappointing. Again, wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday. The Staff returns to school on Monday 19th July and students return on Tuesday 20th July. A calendar for term3 is attached. Remember as this term has been an 11 week term, the first week back in term 3 will be week 2. Mark Hewitt

YEAR 9 LAPTOP ALLOCATION

Currently we are in the process of allocating laptops to Year 9 students who have returned the signed laptop charter. This process will take three weeks to complete. During this allocation students have:

• Been given a presentation of digital safety and citizenship • Shown how to connect to the internet at home • Shown several programs on the laptop such as:

- A program called One Note – students have made a 2010 diary and booklets for all their core subjects in this program

- Microsoft Student including dictionary, Microsoft maths and encyclopaedias

- Learning Essentials - An overview of other programs on the laptop

• Completed the DET survey • Become a member of the Newcastle High Moodle • Been introduced the Newcastle High Wiki

I am asking all YEAR 9 students to leave their laptops at home until Wednesday 23rd June. The reason behind this date is that all Year 9 students should have their laptop by then and the laptop sleeves should have arrived in the school. It is anticipated that the laptop sleeves should arrive at the school on Tuesday 22nd June. Thank you Sondra Munro

P&C UPDATE Trivia Night is booked for Friday 6th August 7pm at Newcastle Leagues Club (opposite Spotlight). Put together a table of 10 and come along for a fun fundraising night. Money raised from this event will go towards new tables & benches for the students. Support our Newcastle High School students, who have organised an art exhibition at Market Square on the 1st floor, this exhibition is open until Friday 2nd July. At our last P&C meeting a discussion regarding our lobbying NSW government for funding was raised. Jodi McKay MP was invited to tour the school regarding maintenance issues and another meeting has been arranged. The P&C is keen to find out how much money has been allocated to our school for 2010/11 and over the next 5 years. Kate Neilson and Rebecka Fenwick from Year 11 have been selected to attend the State Drama Camp in Sydney. The P&C is proud to support these girls with a donation of $100.00 each towards the cost of the camp. Both these students are wonderful ambassadors for our school. Our next gardening morning is Sunday 27th June at 9am. Meet at the Smith Street entrance. Anyone is welcome to come along for a morning or whatever time you may have available. The next P&C meeting is on Monday 28th June at 5.30pm. Meet in the Staff house, please feel welcome to come along & have a say in your school. President J. Woodcock

FOOD AND TEXTILE FACULTY SENIOR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

What’s Old Is New

Year 11 Design and Technology have recently completed their first design project. Titled “What’s Old Is New” students created a variety of products in response to this brief. Ranging from a skirt created from a recycled doona, a hand bag that was once an old folder and an ottoman covered in off cuts from old jeans. Students in this course are to be commended for their efforts as they demonstrated creativity and the ability to apply a design process to create very useable end products. Keep up the great work.

Drawing Workshop The annual drawing workshop was held on Thursday the 10th June. Attended by both year 11 and 12 Design and Technology students the workshop provides students with the opportunity to develop their fashion drawing skills and specifically give Year12 students a chance to dedicate some concentrated time on presentation drawings for their major design projects.

To help review a unit of work, Year 11 Exploring Early Childhood students were required to summarise a fairy tale into 7 succinct points. They needed to select 15 important facts they had learned about in the Growth and Development Unit. The next step was to substitute one or two words in each of the 7 fairy tale points with the most significant facts they had learned. Here is the result of one group’s work for you to enjoy!! Fairy Tale:

• Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess named Snow White with skin like ivory and hair like ebony.

• The magic mirror tells the Queen that Snow White is the fairest of them all. • She sends the hunter to kill Snow White. He couldn’t bring himself to do it so

he told her to run away and took back a pig’s heart instead. • The Queen finds out she’s alive and sets out to kill Snow White. • She poisoned Snow White with a poisoned apple and Snow White falls into a

deep sleep and can only be awakened by True Love kisses. • The prince comes and kisses her, she awakens and they live happily ever

after. The Fractured Fairy Tale:

• Once upon a time there was a physically beautiful princess. • The magic mirror uses communication to tell the Queen Snow White is the

fairest of them all. • The Queen sends the hunter to bully and kill Snow White. She escapes. • Snow White befriends 7 dwarfs and forms a positive relationship with them. • The Queen’s cognitive development allows her to find out Snow White is

alive. • The Queen uses negative behaviour by poisoning Snow White with an apple. • The prince kisses Snow White and she awakes. They formed an attachment

and they lived happily ever after.

YEAR 8 REPORT As Term 2 draws to a close it hopefully will be a time for reflection. Students will be receiving their half yearly reports soon and reading with excitement their grades and comments. Some students have excelled, receiving Principal Awards for their outstanding achievement across all subject areas, while some students will be disappointed. I have a statement which I refer to quite often, that is, “Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.” We all get what we deserve based upon what we put into it, so I suggest that students, who are not happy, take on board their teachers’ suggestions on how to improve, and work towards reaching your personal best. It is all about commitment, attitude, and motivation. No-one else can improve these results, except you. We have approximately 70 Principal Awards this semester. Let’s aim for more next semester as most of you are very capable, with only a few areas needing to be improved. Congratulations to all students who did work to their potential. Your names have been placed into the lucky draw for this term’s prize. Good luck. A few weeks ago we held a Year Assembly where Mr Hewitt and Mr Jones spoke to you all about our expectations of you whilst here at school. It is hoped that all students were listening as these will be adhered to next term very strictly by all classroom teachers. Be expected to face the consequences if you decide to challenge these. They will be clearly displayed in all classrooms for your constant reminder. It is disappointing to see how few Year 8 students still do not have a diary in which to organise themselves. Following a two week timetable is difficult enough without trying to remember what homework or assignments are due when. A new semester is a chance for you to change your habits, and get yourself organised. You will be receiving a new timetable with your new elective choices. Make copies of it yourself; place a copy into your diary as well, so that you always are prepared. Congratulations to Jasper Sambrook who won Term 1’s Gift Voucher for being prepared and organised by using a diary. Assemblies are a time for us to display as a year group how well organised we are, and a few people are letting us down. Correct school uniform is expected and on assemblies, it is clearly visible who isn’t following this expectation. Lining up in correct Mentor groups is also essential. Starting Term 3, any student who is caught sitting in the incorrect line by us will be attending detention for half of lunch. Show us how well you listen and respect our school by doing the right thing. We would like to acknowledge the wonderful work by your parents as well by attending to such matters as your uniform requirements, payment of school fees, and your general well being. Remember, if there are any problems please phone for an appointment and we will be happy to discuss any concerns you are having. We look forward to starting a new semester in Term 3. Enjoy your mid year break. MRS ELLIS/ MRS QUEENAN YEAR 8 ADVISERS

Vocational Education and Training (VET) Earlier this month I received a phone call from a concerned parent of a 2009, year 12 graduate. The ex-student is experiencing difficulties and frustrations regarding the lack of employed opportunities, and is not currently enrolled in any form of fulltime or part time training. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Approx 30 % of students undertake tertiary studies directly from school. What happens to the remaining 70%? Employment and training are the desired pathways and obtaining a VET qualification while at school can greatly assist in this transition. Year 10 students 2010, will soon begin to make subject selection choices for the preliminary year in 2011. This article shares with parents and students the options available in Vocational Education and Training and the benefits it attracts. Subject selection information will be available on the school’s website and Moodle, as well as information sessions for parents and students on Tuesday 29th June at the school. Vocational courses available in 2011 include:

- Hospitality - Retail Services - Business Services - Metal and Engineering.

Vocational courses provide students with an opportunity for the achievement of: 1. A Higher School Certificate qualification, and

2. Certificate Qualifications that are recognised by employers and training institutions nationally.

3. Contribute to an ATAR score for University admission. Student Profiles

Jessica Smith – will graduate with the Higher School Certificate at the end of 2010. Her qualifications will include Certificates in Tourism, Hospitality and Business Services. This is an outstanding achievement and will greatly assist Jessica in her options for employment and further training. The compulsory work placement experiences have provided her with insights into the type of career path she would prefer.

Sam Watson – Sam will graduate in 2010 with the HSC and Certificate qualifications in Hospitality. Sam aims to undertake tertiary studies in 2011. During the course Sam has been employed in the Hospitality industry. It is reassuring that he has skills that will provide him with an income while he pursues his tertiary studies. Reece Hain – Reece will also graduate with the HSC in 2010. His certificate qualifications will be in the Metal and Engineering industry. The work placement reports were highly complimentary of Reece’s employability skills. While at school he also gained the Senior First Aid Certificate and OH&S White Card. These qualifications have provided Reece with an opportunity to expand on his technical and employability skill base. . Dylan Mathews – Dylan is a year 10 student who is part of the pilot program to commence Vocational studies in Stage 5. At the conclusion of the preliminary certificate in 2011, Dylan will have gained certificate qualifications in Hospitality. Dylan is current employed as a school based trainee out of school hours for approx 15 hours a week. This provides Dylan with a regular income while he also works towards dual qualifications. Dean Wilson – Dean is presently in Year 11 and enrolled in the Metal & Engineering, Hospitality and Retail Services courses. Work placement is on the agenda for term 2 and 3 in these subjects. This will help Dean to make an informed decision about further career and training options. Abbee Bortkevitch – is a trainee at the Westpak bank 1 day a week. At the conclusion of the school year she will have a HSC and qualifications in Business Services and Hospitality. Work placement is a compulsory component of all VET courses which surprisingly nearly always has a positive outcome. This can be the offer of part time or full time employment or a decision by students to look at alternate options in other industries or work places. The opportunity to make an informed decision about career choices is an invaluable experience while in secondary school. Information will be available regarding School based apprenticeships and traineeships at the Parent Information Evening - June 29.

????What’s the Drama????

By Kristen Hepple

Hunter Theatresports Competition In week 4 of this term, Year 10 and 11 Drama Students travelled to Merewether High School to compete in the Hunter Theatresports Competition. Our Year 11 Team, Brooke Farrugia, Kizzia Medland, Kate Neilson and Rebecka Fenwick and were the winners on the day, defeating Merewether High School by a narrow margin. This team, with the addition of Bridie Halse and Alissa Lucas competed in the final at Maitland Rep Theatre and achieved Third place. Our Year 10 participants, Michael Basista, Adrian Murphy, Georgia Morrison-Spencer and Madeleine Sharman performed strongly, but did not make the Final. They are looking forward to trying again next year. I would like to publicly acknowledge the support of Hunter Impro who provided volunteers to run a workshop with Year 9, 10 and 11, at the beginning of Term 2. This provided students with a valuable opportunity to brush up their Theatresports Games Knowledge, in preparation for the Hunter Competition. State Drama Camp Year 11 Drama students, Kate Neilson and Rebecka Fenwick have been selected to attend the State Drama Camp, which is held in Sydney in August. At this camp the girls will have the opportunity to work with industry professionals and other talented students from across NSW in a variety of performance workshops. Hopefully they will bring back an array of experiences that we may all learn from. Congratulations Kate and Rebecka! Year 10 Drama and English Cross-Faculty Collaboration Year 10 Drama and English students have been studying the play by Nick Enwright, The Property of the Clan. Year 10 English students had the opportunity to be an audience for the play performed by Year 10 Drama students in the Drama Studio. Students then travelled to Civic Playhouse to see the production Blackrock (an adaption of the Property of the Clan) which was performed by the senior cast from Tantrum Productions. We would like to thank Ms. McNeilly for coordinating this excursion. Logbooks and Preparedness for Lessons in Drama Class Our students always have homework after a practical Drama lesson – to complete a reflection (diary entry). It is essential that all students bring their logbooks to every Drama lesson in order to ensure that they can achieve all outcomes, set out by the Board of Studies, in the subject. In addition, it is recommended that girls bring shorts to all Drama classes so that they can participate fully in all activities.

WORKING ARTIST IN ACTION Janine King through the P&C has offered to publicise the artworks of students at Newcastle High in her Old Man’s Café without any cost to the school. In return we are pleased to promote the catering service provided by Janine. So visit the Old Man’s Café, and enjoy the artworks and the good food. This year the working artist class has completed two workshops at the Arts Emporium Arts Studio in Lambton and we have recently held an exhibition of our work at the Old Man’s Café in Samdon Street, Hamilton. This café is managed by Ms Janine King who generously offered the wall space of her café for us to exhibit our works. “My work depicted the city and industrialisation and its impact on our landscape. It was good to have my work hung in the Old Man’s Café as it was fun to draw something that was framed and going to the public.” Bridie Halse Year 10

YEAR 7 GET STRUNG ALONG Over the last couple of weeks Year 7 music students have been treated to some virtuoso performances from Mr Crichton. He has shown the violin and the viola to the students and some students attempted to play these instruments. These demonstrations have followed similar demonstrations from Ben Dansan (practical student) on the Brass family instruments.

CLIMATE for CHANGE Last week, we went to a climate change forum run by Conservation Volunteers, Australia. We found it interesting to hear from experts in the field who provided us with a more complete understanding of climate change. It was excellent to hear from Newcastle’s own non-government community organisations, as they had ideas on what we could all do to reduce our carbon footprint. We have plans to become involved with other local high schools in the `Youth Environmental Leadership’ training program to help teens become more aware of what we can do to help improve our environment. The day was definitely beneficial to us as members of the school and Newcastle community. Thanks to the Science faculty and Ms Nowak for supporting us in our future goals to make Newcastle High school a healthy, sustainable place to learn. Stay tuned for more environmental news coming your way. Bridie Halse and Alissa Lucas, Year 10 with Mr Ashley Brand, Chairperson, Conservation Volunteers Australia.

Mr Newman’s Best and Fairest went to Daniel Stojcevski, Jordan Murray and Josh Terry. The U/16 team had a win against St Pius but were beaten by Lambton. Mr Newman’s Best and Fairest were Jarrad Rotumah, Angus Drew and Max Bryant. Football (Soccer) Our Open Boys Team defeated Belmont 1-0 in their Round 3 game. Unfortunately, in the Round 4 game they were defeated by Warners Bay 1-0. Whilst the defeat was disappointing, what is extremely disappointing is that the game was marred by some violent behaviour on the part of some of the Newcastle High and Warners Bay High School players. There have been problems between these teams previously. This has been an ongoing problem in the Open Bays Soccer Team for 3 of the past 4 years. Unfortunately, Newcastle High’s reputation is being tarnished by a small number of students who seem unable to accept defeat and complete the game with dignity. It is extremely disappointing for their mates who participate with pride and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship. At this stage we are not sure that we will be entering the Open Boys Team in the CHS Competition in 2011. On a much more positive note, congratulations to Sean Rich who was selected in the NSW CHS 1sts Rugby Union Team AND Jacob Pepper who, after being selected in the NSW CHS Open Boys Football (Soccer) Team, went to further trials and has been selected to attend the Australian Schools Football Championships as a member of the NSW All Schools Team. Well done to both these boys! Cross Country After successes at the Hunter Region Cross Country Carnival, three students have qualified to attend the NSW CHS Country Championships. Brent Taylor finished 1st in 17years Boys at the Hunter Region Carnival and will accompany Sarah Bugbird and Harrison Nadfalusi to NSW CHS Championships in Eastern Creek next term. Congratulations. Athletics The Newcastle High school athletics carnival was held at Newcastle Athletics Track on Wednesday 2nd June. After a successful and well attended day, we had a strong team attend the City Zone Carnival at Glendale on Thursday 10th June. The results from this carnival will be published in the next parent bulletin. Age Champions from the Newcastle High School Carnival were; 12 years Sarah Barron Lucas Mills 13 years Ashlea De Bruin Jarrod Sansom 14 years Rachael Cappiello Willis Nadfalusi Jess Hanlon 15 years Sarah Bugbird Jack Cosentino Mathew Griffiths David Hartwell 16 years Brooke Farrugia Aaron Armstrong Rory Thomas Joshua Cappiello Michael Basista 17+ years Maddie Terry Kieran Gordon Mr Newman Carnival Organiser PDHPE HEALTH SURVEY Health Care Limited in partnership with the Hunter Institute of Technology TAFE are doing a survey as part of a research project to help identify services and resources that are required by young people in the Hunter Region. Students do not put their name or school on the survey. It is totally anonymous. The information gathered will assist Hunter Care Limited evaluate their current programs and investigate the need to develop, change or adapt programs to suit the needs of young people. We believe this is a valuable exercise and feedback that we receive is applicable to the theory components of our PDHPE course and will be useful for us to evaluate and maintain a current emphasis within our programs.

All students in Years 7-10 will complete the survey in their PDHPE lessons. If you do not wish for your son/daughter/ward to participate please contact me at school by Friday 25 June 2010. Thank you in anticipation Mr P Wagner Head Teacher PDHPE HSIE Mock Trial: Last Wednesday the Mock Trial team competed against St Phillip’s Christian College and were successful with an impressive 16 point win. The case was a civil matter and concerned St Phillip’s taking action against us for negligence concerning a fall in a shopping centre. I was delighted with the performance of the team as each of them carried out their duties in an impressive manner. The first barrister was Josie Plumsted; the second barrister was Rebecka Fenwick; the solicitor was Kass Bangle; the witnesses were Alissa Lucas and Bridie Halse; the court officer was Taylor Wright. The case was heard by Mr Michael Rosenfeld of Sparke Helmore who was sitting as the Judge. This was our second successive win and follows a successful case against Scone High School. In that, we were prosecuting a matter under the Fisheries Act. With the victories of these rounds behind us we are now waiting to hear if we are to progress through to the elimination rounds. I am confident that we will and, if this is the case, it will be the fifth time in the last six years that our school has enjoyed this measure of success. I would particularly like to thank and acknowledge Mr Robert McKessar of Braye Cragg. Mr McKessar is our coach, and has done this a number of times in recent years. His availability to our students, his patience and good-nature with the team is much appreciated and a great measure of our success has been directly attributable to the wealth of knowledge and experience that he brings to the preparation of our cases. Legal Studies: Recently the Preliminary Legal Studies class attended an excursion to Newcastle Court House. During the visit the students witnessed (for want of a better term) a number of cases including the sentencing stages of a District Court criminal matter. The group also had issues in one of the cases explained to them by one of the solicitors involved in the matter. The excursion helped students better grasp the issues concerned with court processes and dispute resolution.

HSIE Embracing Technology HSIE teachers are now engaging with and using a range of ICT technologies to provide a more stimulating learning environment for their students. Interactive White Boards now operate in several HSIE classrooms providing opportunities for innovative teaching practices to more actively engage students in the learning process. Students are encouraged to use a variety of Web 2 Tools such as “glogsters” to present research in a more visually stimulating way and “Lino It” as a means to engage in collaborative online research and visual presentations as well as honing their research skills, through the use of more effective search engines such as Spezify.com and searchcube.com, the students are also developing ICT skills associated with uploading and embedding relevant images, video clips, music etc into their work. During Semester 2 students will be encouraged to use other Web 2 tools such as Animoto, Museum Box and Biocube. Students in all years are being encouraged to use the Moodle (http://web1.newcastle-h.schools.nsw.edu.au) to access lesson materials, especially Year 10 students with their DER laptops, revision quizzes, video and powerpoint presentations and to embed their own ICT tasks for marking. This term, Blake Phillipson of year 12 brought his medieval armour and weapons to display to year 8. All students found the experience very rewarding as they were able to understand more about the complex and heavy equipment used by soldiers at this time.

MATHEMATICS The Faculty of Mathematics has just farewelled Ms Pru Walker who has recently completed her internship at Newcastle High School. She has had a highly successful stint in our faculty and many students have benefited from her contribution to their learning. Ms Walker has accepted employment at Menindee Central School starting at the beginning of next term. Our loss is certainly their gain and we wish Ms Walker every success in a very promising career. Students are reminded to complete homework allocated via Maths Online (www.mathsonline.com.au). This is a free internet resource and is of great value to students of all year and ability levels. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s effort and progress via the parent section of this facility. We also remind parents of junior school students of the $10 annual text book hiring fee. Thanks to those who have paid as the funds are vital to the functioning of the Faculty of Mathematics and its equipment purchases. Those who are yet to pay will be given a receipt for the $10 when they pay and students will benefit from the faculty’s acquisitions. Students in all years need to bring a scientific calculator to all Mathematics classes as all courses are structured around varying amounts of calculator applications. Also, if any textbooks from previous years are still at home we would welcome their return at the earliest opportunity.

Food quality is one of the principles of the food service industry which is a component of the senior Food Technology course. Year Eleven have just completed this unit of work and had some hands on experience when visiting the Newcastle Fish Co-Operative and Wests Leagues Club at New Lambton. The students enjoyed a somewhat rushed lunch before returning back to school for period three. Thanks goes to Shane Harvey at the Fish Co-op for his wealth of knowledge and precious time and to Justin Savine, Catering Manager at Wests for taking time out of his busy schedule to show us the storage areas of such a large business.
