The ccjlours in tlu; , ^iassvessels at Tell el Amarna were very varied, hutllue was the commonest ainono- them, as Ijein^i;-the most easily produced ; hands of dlH'erentcolour oi' shade on the lj(tdy ol' the vase arereadily drawn into regular waves by cond)ing 'while the material is still viscid. Hitherto onlyheads and small objects arc known of a pei'iodearlier than the XVllIth Dynasty, Imt by thattime such absolute perfection had been attainedill the manufacture of oi)ai[ue glass that it isonly probalde that vessels could be made of itas early as the Xllth Dynasty.

I'r,. XX. (/;.//. [., xi., row J), 'i'he repre-sentation in Kigs. I and br has often beeninterpreted as glass-blowing, and indeed it issingularly suggestive of that manufacture, except that the furnace seems inade(juate. Hutblown glass is a- comparati\ely modern iu\en-tion, and it is difficult to lay one's hand on anyspecimen of it undoubtedly eailier than Romantimes, though the discoveiy of the art spread sorapidly that the Koman world soon becamelittered with blown glass bottles. All glassvessels of the fourth and iifth centuries it.c.found in Greece and Italy, and all those of theXVIIIth and XlXth Dynasties found in EgyptAvcre formed on moulds. Tlu' muTow mouthedbottles still show in their interior the ellect ofcontact with the rough ashv surface of themould. The glass being opaque, the appear-ance of the interior was immaterial, and mightnever be known until the bottles were lirokcu. But with cups and bowls it was otherwise; the

interior of tlu'se had to he carefully gixuniduntil the surlac was bright and smooth, andthe contrast of this ground surface with thenatural lusti'e of the exterioi' is noticeable at aglance. Scenes, therid'ore, such as that inl''igs. 1 and In are precluded by their date froml)eing considered as representations of glass-blowing. In tombs of the Old and MiddleKingdoms they are very common ; and if blownglass had existed then remains of it alsowould ])v conunon, whereas such are reallyunknown.

This scene is from the N. side of the W. wallof Tondi J, whei-e as usual it is associatedwith scenes of metal-weighing (cf. //.//. II.,vii., xi\'.). I]vidcntly it belongs to a seriesrepi'esenting metal-working, and shows theblowing of the furnace to heat the metalwhethei' glass or other^sufHciently to renderit woi'kable. The men arc blowing throughhollow canes in }M-imitive fashion, and to pro-tect the ends of these feeble blow-pipes from thefire each is tip[)cd with a considerable mass oflire-clay; the pale grey colour of this material(like that ol' the walls (;f tlu; furnace) gives tothe instrument a particularly close resemblanceto the tulie of the glass-blower. Comparing thescene with corresponding pictures from tondjsof the XVIltth Dynastye.g. in the tomb ofllekhmara at Thel)eswe fnid a great improve-ment introduced in furnace-blowing. Insteadof depending on their lungs for the blast, theworkers have instituted bellows moved by thefeet, and the strong blast passes through a tixcdreed into the furnace, while the blow-pipe isused for finer Avork only.

In the XXVIth Dynasty tiie old rei)resen-tation Avas duly revived in the tomb jjaintings, like many other obsolete scenes of the OldEmpire. Even at that time glassdjlowing wasprobably ciuitc unknown. The date of its dis-covery, marking a very important era in theindustry, recjuircs investigation.
