the Pa. New Zealand Rabbit Breeders fi nally

realized a dream this year when they hosted the 41st national New Zealand show

in Leesport, Pa. The show was dedicated to Judge Sam Rizzo a longtime member of the New York New Zealand rabbit breeders. New York and Pa. New Zealand rabbit breeders have for many years been joined together to promote our breed . Many Pa. breeders have belonged to the New York club , including Paul and myself for many years at the beginning of our rabbit career. The New York club with Sam’s blessing has passed the torch to the “Keystone(Pa.)” club now, since most of the New Zealand breeders are now in Pa. instead of New York. The Keystone club was formed so the New Zealand rabbit breeders could continue the tradition that New York had done many times and put national show together.

Great job Keystone rabbit club members! The show was well run and attended with some very deep classes of quality animals. The New York nationals were always known for their great banquets and the Keystone club did not disappoint. I’m sure everyone who was there will agree that thanks to Rick Shipe and family the banquet was one of the best ever. Congratulations to Robert Crawford for BOB with a great 6-8 white doe and Paul Grundtish’s senior white buck taking BOS. Thanks to all the exhibitors who brought their best to show . The classes were as deep in quality as I have ever seen . All the placements will be listed in this Times. Thanks to all of the judges for the great job they did. They had their work cut out for them .

The minutes from the board meeting will be printed in this issue . Please take the time to read the business of your club. If there are any questions please know you can call or e-mail me anytime.

The Texas new Zealand club is looking forward to hosting next years National in Ft. Worth. The information for that show will be listed in the Times and on the website. The Texas club is looking forward to hosting the 2012 show and

will make you all welcome. Your board awarded the 2013 National show to David Cardinal and the Wisconsin New Zealand club. The information for that national will be listed in future issues and on the website.

A new guidebook is being planned with a print date this summer. We hope to have it out and in your hands Indiana convention this fall. Please note the ad information and deadlines in this issue. The ads in the guidebook are our primary source of paying for the printing and so we need your help and support to make this the best guidebook ever. If you need help with an ad or have any questions contact Rick Shipe or Dick Gehr . They will be glad to help you out. I have asked all my offi cers and directors to solicit ads for their areas so we don’t miss anyone. Remember this is a 5 year booklet and reaches a lot of people. Rick Shipe and his committee are looking for a few new articles , so if you can share any information about raising our breed , write that article now. We need articles for new and experienced breeders .

The Indianapolis convention will be here before we know it so if you haven’t made those reservations , do it now. This convention could turn out to be one of our biggest. We are planning for a big show and hope everyone turns out with your best. The middle of the country usually brings in the numbers for all breeds and we hope that for our New Zealands that holds true. We will have a great pair of rabbits , thanks to Paul Grundtish, to raffl e off . The money from the raffl e helps to support your club and we have been very lucky over the years to have some quality animals donated .

So in closing , keep those bunnies cool and we will see you in Indy. I remain available for anything for the good of this club and the promotion of our breed.

the New Zealandnational show hosted

by the Pennsylvania NewZealand club was a hugesuccess this past Easter

weekend. Breeders from across the countryshowed up to support the show enjoying greatcompetition and fellowship during their weekendstay in Leesport, PA. In my opinion this nationalshow was one of my most enjoyable shows duringmy show career. During the show I observed avery relaxed atmosphere in combination with acontinuous socializing and conversation amongstthe exhibitors. The quality of the rabbits exhibitedwas outstanding and a big congratulation goesout to all the winners in the youth and openshow. Congratulations and a big thank you to thePennsylvania breeders for all their hard work anddedication to this great hobby.

It is time to publish our new New Zealandguide book and with this publication comes anopportunity to place an Ad to advertise yourrabbitry. Advertising by our members really helpsto defray the cost of publishing this book soplease consider placing an Ad in our new guidebook. Refer to our last edition of the New ZealandTimes or go to our New Zealand web site fordetails.

Looks like our National New Zealand showis heading to Wisconsin for 2013. Thanks toDavid Cardinal and the Wisconsin New Zealandbreeders for submitting a bid. But before wehead to Wisconsin, our fellow breeders in thegreat state of Texas will host the 2012 event.They say everything is bigger in Texas and I knowPete Basgil and all the Texas breeders will havea grand National prepared for our arrival. PeteBasgil is collecting specials at this time so pleasecontact Pete and donate a few dollars to supportthis show.

i want to start this report with a “BIG” thank-you

to the Keystone NZ Club and all of its members for giving us a “GREAT” National. In my opinion it was one of the best

shows I have been to, I just wish I could have shown some animals… From what I could see, the quality level was terrifi c. Some of those classes were so deep; the judges really had to be at their best. Congrats to all of the winners, once again Bob Crawford led the way with some beautiful animals & Paul Grundtisch also had a strong showing. You will fi nd a complete list elsewhere in this issue of the Times. The show, animals and judging was something for us all to remember and so was the “Banquet”… Awesome food and plenty of it…. The only question I have is, PA when are you going to do this again?

Also, in this issue of the Times you will fi nd the minutes from our BOD meeting and the results from the auction. Thanks to all that donated & purchased animals for the auction. We all know how important these auctions are for the Federation…

One thing that was decided at the meeting was the vote & approval of the 2013 NZ National going to Wisconsin. Thank-you David Cardinal for the excellent proposal and we will all look forward to our trip to WI in 2013. Remember, no snow…

Another important topic to the Federation at this time is the printing of our New Guidebook. In the Times & on the website is the information to place an ad, please get the ads sent to Dick Gehr & ad payments to Rick Shipe. You will notice there is a July 1st deadline; also don’t forget articles. As with any publication, it’s only as good as the information that is received.

Pete Basgil gave us an update for the 2012 National in TX. It sounds like they are getting ready to welcome us again. It was a great National the last time we headed to TX and next year will be no different. There is info in this Times and on the website, watch for updates as time gets closer…

As I write this article, it’s already in the 90’s. I hope I get the animals through the summer and ready to compete in Indy. Al Esterline has

One thing I hope to have in Indy is some club apparel. I get quite a few requests about this & I think it’s time that we offer the members items to showcase our breed. Look how good the t-shirts that Lisa made were received. Sue & I have talked about this, so please watch for details…

Before I close I want to address something that I wrote in my last article. I made mention that we may be ready to step down as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Federation. Nowhere did I say we are going to quit, we just wanted to let the members of the Federation know that this was a possibility. We will not leave the Federation at anytime unless there is someone ready and “willing” to take over. With that being said I want to Thank-you for the overwhelming support that Julie & I have received, it is greatly appreciated…

Well I guess it’s time to bring this to a close and get it off to Dick. Remember the Guidebook, and please step up to help in Indy…

2011 – BOD Meeting @ NZ NationalLeesport, PA – April 22, 2011

Reading of the Minutes-A motion was made byDavid Cardinal, 2nd by Pete Basgil to approvethe minutes as printed in the Times. Motionpassed.

Report of Offi cers: President Borden read thereports of several of the absent Directors.

VP Mangione gave a report on the ConventionJudges. There is some concern on the health of one of the judges for the 2011 ARBA Convention.President Borden said she would contact thisjudge and try and get an honest evaluationof the judges health. VP Mangione is going tocheck on the availability of the judge we haveon stand-by.

Sec-Treas. Neff gave the fi nancial report asfollows, $5655.77 in checking, $5127.14 in Savings(Scholarship) and $1562.50 in a CD (Guidebook Fund). Motion to accept report made by DavidCardinal 2nd by Lisa Jennings. Motion passed.

Sec. Neff reported everything appeared to begoing better with the Sweepstakes system sincethe fi nal updates made by Dick Gehr in the fall.A letter rec’d from the Kentucky State RBA inregards to the 2013 NZ National. There will bea Mini Convention held in KY and they wantedto include the NZ’s. Director Cardinal pointedout that in our National Show Guidelines our Nationals must be put on by State or Regional NZSpecialty Clubs. Sec Neff reported that he wouldsend a letter/email to the KY Club to let themknow of this rule. Sec Neff also reported that weneed to pay attention to the “Times” deadlines.These deadlines are printed in the Times and wemust try and get all info to our Editor, Dick Gehr by these dates. Too often Dick has been waitingfor articles, etc and this them makes the Timeslate getting to the printer. The only time that

these dates should be extended is possibly after the ARBA Convention.

Director Basgil gave a short report on the NZ numbers in TX and then talked about the 2012 National in TX. Pete passed out a fl yer with details on this show.

Committee Reports: Director Cardinal gave a brief Standards Committee report and a copy of the items missed in the “New” ARBA Standard of Perfection was passed out.

Awards Committee: Chairman Arnie Schmidt was absent. Committee member John Neff reported on two names for the Hall of Fame and one name for Outstanding Member. Motion made by Fred Saputo, 2nd by Larry Lunz to accept these names. Motion passed. Awards will be given @ the ARBA Convention.

Judging Process: Director Jennings reported on how the BOB/BOS selection will be done at this National, as well as all future Nationals & ARBA Conventions. Motion passed.

New Business:National Shows-President Borden was looking

for ideas to try and get more attendance, etc to our National Shows. Items discussed, location, on-line entry & holding in conjuction with other Breed Nationals.

C&BL- Director Jennings asked about getting the Term Limits changed? After much discussion this was tabled for further discussion. Changing the number of Directors that the Federation has was also discussed, this too was tabled. Sec Neff reported that he has been asked about our “Dues” structure. Some clubs give a discount for multiple year renewals. The Federation has not recently raised it’s dues and after some discussion it was decided to not change our membership fees @ this time.

Sec Neff reported in the last Guidebook, on page 29 “Rules for National New Zealand Shows that Rule # 8 was wrong. This will be corrected for the new Guidebook.

Rule #8. The Federation shall not issue a show sanction to another club for the same dates as the National New Zealand Show…. At the 2003 General Meeting in Wichita, KS it was discussed and voted on to change this rule. It should read as follows.

Dear All,Just to let you all know that our club has lost

another of our faithful, longtime breeders. Teddy Dixon of Bloomfi eld, Iowa, was a true

gentleman in our breed. He suffererd a stroke in mid May and did not survive.

I know he was a farmer ( known for his honey) and had been active with the the 4-H. Lisa said he showed the Mo. State fair since 1969.

He was a longtime member and will be missed and we send condolances to his family.

Please include his wife Jo and family in your prayers.

on the progress of the “New” Guidebook. Adshave been coming in slow. Pres. Borden urgedall Directors to go through the old Guidebook and look at ads from their area and try to getthese ads renewed. Rick also reported on someof the quotes received by Dick Gehr for printing.A motion was made by Director Cardinal, 2nd byDirector Himmelberger to accept the bid fromM&D Printing for 1250 copies. Motion passed.Sec. Neff brought up the cost of Artwork/typesetting, etc of the Guidebook. In 2006 thisfee was $2900.00+ and in 2001 the fee was $1500.A motion was made by Director Cardinal, 2nd byDirector Basgil to pay $1200 to Dick Gehr for hiswork on the New Guidebook. Motion passed.

*Bids – 2013 NZ National. David Cardinalsubmitted a bid for the Wisconsin NZRBA to hostthe 2013 National to be held in Jefferson, WI.After some questions & discussion a motion wasmade by Director Jennings, 2nd by Director Basgilto accept the Wisconsin bid. Motion passed.

if you missed the 41st Annual National New

Zealand Show, you really missed a good time. The Keystone State New Zealand RBA did a beautifuljob putting on a show. This was their fi rst showthey put on and it looked like it was veteransputting on a show. Pa. also had a very nicebanquet.

I would like to congratulate all the winners.They are printed elsewhere in this Times . Isn”tit amazing Robert Crawford can sell winningrabbits to everybody all over the country andstill come back and beat them. There werereally nice rabbits rabbits and they were deepin each class. The judges had their work cut outfor them and they did a nice job.

About the only downfall of the conventionwas not many Youth were entered. This is thefurture of our club. Now is the time of year topromote the Breed in the Lead. Selling youthin 4-H breeding stock and market pens is a goodway to start. Showing at local shows also helpsget the numbers up. The more people seeingNew Zealands will remember the breed.

It was nice seeing everyone at the conventionand let’s keep all our ailing friends in our prayers.

greetings from the ever changing midwest.

While many of you have way more water than you want, we could use a good rain. However, since it fi nally warmed up somewhat we

are able to start getting some planting done.I want to congratulate everyone that made

the trip to the Nationals. Also, my best thoughts to all of the winners. The distance and family obligations on Easter weekend made it impossible for me to come. I am looking forward to Indiana this fall and at present am looking toward Dallas next spring.

I went to two shows in April. At the fi rst one there were only about 25 New Zealands in the open. However there were four youth (all girls) that together had about twenty. That was good to see. Then the second show the following weekend had sixty-seven in the open and about a doze4n in the youth. There were some really nice ones at that show. I did not do very well as mine were to young at that time. I’m looking forward to this weekend (May 14) and the June shows as my rabbits will be older and will compete better than in early April. I do have my boxes full of all colors for the fall shows though.

There is still a great demand for whites in this area. Several people are starting to raise commercial rabbits and are buying lots of does. That is why I didn’t have any ready to show before this time. I also have a hard time keeping ahead of the demand for brokens, both red and black.

Lets not forgetour elections coming up as we need dedicatedpeople to keep this fi ne orginazition runningstrong. All the winners and placements shouldbe on the web-site till this comes out so I wontgo into detail. Lets get our rabbits ready for Indyas Al esterline is working very hard on this andlets not forget his party room.

The picking of BOB and BOS was done verysmoothly and should be adopted for all Conv.and Nat. shows good job Lisa Jennings and GeneRowbotham.

I knew they would with the great bunch of people up there. I hated to miss it, especially all my good

friends that were there.Congradulations to all the class winners in each variety open and youth. Hats off to

Robert and Paul for BOB and BOS. Spring shows are in full swing here in the tri state one about every weekend somewhere.

Here in the southeast we’ve had some nasty weather. Tornadoes and heavy rains. Flooding everywhere. It will be the end of May or June before the farmers around here can get their seed in the ground.

Looking forward to seeing everybody this fall in Indy.

hello from Northern Illinois,

I would like to apologize for not getting an article written for the last issue of the Times, as I forget it and

when I remembered it was to late. It is the fi rst part of Feb. and it has been

awful cold here and from the weather reports many other parts of the country also. I had some of my watering system freeze up, so had to put dishes in for some haven’t had to do that in quite sometime.

April and the National will be here before we know it and the trip to PA, which for us will be a long one. Hopefully you have a winner sitting in a cage just waiting for the opportunity to shine.

I have talked to Al Esterline and sounds like he hard at work for the Convention in Indy. Hope everyone has their reservations made for there as there aren’t many left.

I hope everyone had as good a time in MN as I did, didn’t do much winning but enjoyed talking with friends new and old.

It was certainly a trip with myself, Max Reeser, LaVerne Ritzma, and Arnold Meyer, I better not forget our chauffeur, Sue! I am not sure that we could have gotten another thing in the trailer or the Suburban!

Starting to get some good litters now had some trouble earlier though, hoping for a good one. Better get this closed and get it to Dick. See you down the road,

said spring is around thecorner, I sure don’t knowwhat corner he was talkingabout. It really been a crazywinter. Shows are off and running in our areafor the 2011 show season. We had our seasonopener in Couer d Alene, Idaho. We had aboutfi fty New Zealands being shown with all varietiesbeing represented. The whites prevailed in theA show with Wally Stickelmeyer winning BOB andBOS.

News is out that a new regional New Zealandclub has been formed in California called WestCoast New Zealand RBA. A good leader is at thehelm, Manual Hidalgo is President. Hey maybein the future we will be able to have a springnational on the west coast.

For me I will not be able to attend the SpringNational in PA. After doing much research onairlines I fi nd it impossible to be able to fl ydirect to the east coast from Seattle. I wouldhave to change planes at least once, and that isnot good for the new zealands, they seem to dook when we fl y direct. So will have to wait untilfall to see everyone in Indianapolis. Flightsaren’t much better to there either. Probablywill have to come up with a different plan for the rabbits.

To replace the spring nationals I am planning ongoing to the West Coast Classic in Reno, NV. Thisis a large show with several national specialtyshows being held, as well as regular specialtyshows and 3 open shows. Lots of opportunity toshow your rabbits. The new WCNZRBA will behosting two specialty shows. So that seems likea good challenge to go and support them.

I will miss seeing everyone this spring.

2011 ARBA ConventionNew Zealand Headquarters Hotel Information

It is very important for everyone to realizethat the convention has been moved ahead oneday, to make accurate reservations, the showwill begin on Sunday (10-31-11) and the rabbitswill be dismissed on Wednesday (11-02-11), sokeep these dates in mind when making yourreservations.

The offi cial AFNZRBA Hotel will be The MartenHouse Hotel and Lilly Conference Center. Thisis the same hotel that we used at the 2005convention. I have a block of 50 rooms reservedfor the dates, 10-28-11 through 11-01-11. Check-in time is after 3:00 pm on day of arrival andcheck-out time is before 12:00 pm on the day of departure. You may reserve a king size bed or adouble/double bed.

The Marten House is the offi cial Indiana StateFair Hotel. There are no hotels or motels anycloser to the fairgrounds, where the conventionis taking place.

When making reservations make sure to tell thehotel that you are with the AFNZRBA club.

The Broken Pattern – A Lesson in GeneticsSubmitted by: David A. Mangione

There are several genes responsible indetermining the pattern of a rabbit’s coat of fur.This article will attempt to present in laymanterms the genetic stage which determineswhether a rabbit will be a broken, Charlie or solid pattern.Solid, Broken and Charlie Patterns

A solid New Zealand is the same color all over without the presence of white fur interspersedin the solid pattern.

Broken patterned New Zealands can be anyrecognized color of New Zealands. The coloredportions on the rabbit occur in a spottedor blanket pattern with white coat color inbetween. In addition to a spotted or blanketbody pattern, a broken patterned New Zealandshould also have a balanced butterfl y on itsnose, solid colored ears and solid eye circles.The amount of color on the rabbit should not beless than 10% and not more than 50%. Refer tothe ARBA Standard of Perfection for completebreed standards to better understand the variousfaults and disqualifi cations.

A Charlie is a genetically unique brokenpatterned rabbit. Charlies often have less than10% color and are sparsely patterned. However,Charlies which have greater than 10% color canbe shown.

Charlies are distinctly different genetically.True Charlies can only be produced from matingtwo broken pattern rabbits. If either of theparents are solids, the resulting broken offspringcannot be true Charlies. Charlies are uniquegenetically as they will only produce brokenpatterns. If a rabbit ever produces even onesolid offspring, it is not a Charlie.Charlie Genetics

The broken pattern gene, “En” is dominantover the solid pattern gene, “en”. It takes onlyone broken pattern gene to produce a broken. A rabbit with two broken patterned genes is whatwe call a Charlie. Genetically speaking, a solid isen-en, a broken is En-en and a Charlie is En-En.

What Is The Probability Of Producing Brokens?

What Should My Breeding Program Look Like?The most common matings will be solids to

brokens, however breeding broken to broken for a couple of generations will produce a high percentage of showable broken pattern rabbits as well as Charlies. Using the aforementioned chart will provide a more organized approach to your breeding program. A superior Charlie can be a real asset to your breeding program. Using a Charlie can increase the number of broken offspring produced.

All three patterns (solid, broken and charlies) will play an important role when producing broken patterned rabbits. The key to success is keeping accurate records so as to maintain balance between the number of brokens and solids being produced in your breeding program. as part of her Christmas gift, I promisedLinda a trip to Hawaii before she had

to go in for knee replacement surgery on her second knee. We decided to visit the big island of Hawaii. It is bigger than the rest the islands puttogether. It is still growing due to the constantvolcanic eruptions and lava fl ow. Hawaii is alsothe most diverse, geographically. Of the 36 echosystems that exist throughout the world 32 canbe found on the big island. You can essentiallygo from a tropical palm fringed beach to a snow-capped mountain in little more than a half anhour drive.

We decided not to stay in a tourist hotel or condo since we wanted to experience a moreauthentic Hawaii. We ended up spending a veryrestful week at an apartment on an organiccoffee farm in the Kona coffee belt.

Another reason for going to the big island wasto be able to visit with our new friend ErnestCaravahlo and his family. We met Ernest throughmany emails and phone calls talking about NewZealand whites. He was trying to fi nd a way toimport some rabbits since he had not introducedany new blood into his herd in more than 20years. Thanks to the help of Sandra Tsukiyama,who lives on Oahu, we were able to cut throughall the red tape and quarantine requirements andthen make the arrangements to air-ship themfrom Honolulu to Kona. After several months of working on it we were able to ship him 6 whitesin October of 2010.

Ernest is a very interesting guy who has awide variety of interests. He works as a cabinetmaker/carpenter for the County of Hawaii. Hehas a 5 acre coffee farm and in addition alsomanages his mother’s 6 acre coffee farm. He isvery proud of the many different tropical andcitrus fruit trees that he has on the place. Ernestis also an avid and widely known pig hunter. Hehas developed his own hybrid breed of pig dogs.As a young man Ernest was the two times goldengloves boxing champ of Hawaii.

One of his biggest passions is his small herd of New Zealand white rabbits. Ernest has been adedicated New Zealand breeder for more than

30 years. He has to have the cleanest and most well organized rabbitry that I have ever seen. All the cages were full of rabbits with lots of babies. The cages and the rabbits themselves were spotless and showed a lot of vigor.

There is a lot of interest in rabbits in Hawaii. It is very diffi cult for people there to get rabbits - not only from the mainland but also from the other islands. They are trying to establish an ARBA chartered club on the big island. Ernest says that the last time they had a rabbit show there was about 20 years ago. While Ernest plans to sell some breeding stock most of his outlet has been selling dressed fryers to high- end Kona restaurants and hotels.

We had the good fortune of spending Super Bowl Sunday with Ernest, his wife Helen, daughter Jannie and cousin Robert and his wife. His cousin also raises rabbits. Most of the day was spent evaluating and judging rabbits. We went through the whole herd and looked at every rabbit, big and small. We also found time to watch the Packers win the super bowl. Helen served us a number of Hawaiian delicacies for lunch and we left with several bags of estate grown Kona coffee. On an earlier visit they had given us a big box of fruit from their farm that included bananas, avocados, macadamia nuts, oranges, other kinds of citrus and a few tropical fruits that we were not familiar with.

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable vacation. Our visit with the Caravalho’s was special and one that we will always remember. We look forward to their visiting us soon in California.

Again, this experience is a perfect example of meeting and making good friends through rabbits.

It just doesn’t seem possible that it is timefor another issue of the Times! Guess Timejust fl ies when you’re having fun.....

Results from the National are in this issue,and I would like to say Congrats to everyonethat showed, no matter where you may haveplaced. The cameraderie experienced at theshows, particularly the National shows, iswhat keeps the organization strong. Withoutthe members, the club would not be as strongas it is, and the breed would certainly notcontinue to strengthen.

As good as the quality of New Zealands isthrouighout the country, it amazes me how itstill continues to improve year after year. Justwhen you think you have seen the “perfect” animal, another crosses the table that makesyou step back and say WOW !!

The ad deadline for the Guidebook is upJuly 1st. Some of you may get this issue afterthat date. If you did not get an ad submittedfor the Guidebook and would like to, give Rick Shipe a call or drop him an email and ask if he will still take one.....we will be puttingthe GB ads together in the immediate future,so he may allow for a late submission. Notpromising anytyhing, but it never hurts toask.......or even beg !!!
