Zealand-bred stock on the

racetrack, particularly in

Australia, has reminded buyers about the

opportunities the country offers thoroughbred

owners and trainers.

Less than a week out from the 2020 New

Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale, the

auction house’s Australian-based business

development manager is confident that this

year’s three-book catalogue will appeal to a

competitive international buying bench.

There are 667 Book 1 yearlings on offer, to

be auctioned across three sessions, starting

on Sunday, before Books 2 and 3 go under the

hammer from January 29 to 31.

Kneebone believes the key indicators are

encouraging ahead of the opening selling

MORNING BRIEFING

Not A Single Doubt forced into retirement from stud dutiesArrowfield Stud yesterday announced that

leading sire Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s

Choice) has been retired from stud duties after

the 18-year-old was diagnosed with pulmonary

disease which despite treatment has shown no

improvement.

“He suffers respiratory compromise at rest and

even short periods of hand walking exacerbate

this,” Arrowfield’s chairman John Messara

explained.

“Our head vet has advised that Not A Single

Doubt is incapable of performing his breeding

duties and accordingly he has been retired from

active service.” Stud News page 9 >>

“We have our

own hospitality people who have been flat out for

the past couple of months organising bookings

and hotels for clients, so we’ve got a pretty good

handle (on who is coming),” Kneebone said.

“There’s probably more than last year at this

stage, but they change their minds quickly, so

we hope that we have at least the same sort of

numbers as last year.

“From what I’m hearing on the ground, and

from the number of catalogues that are leaving

the office, as well as from the positive feedback

we’ve had through our canvases, I’m pretty

happy with the way it looks.

“Like all auction houses, we are cautious but

positive.”

The success of New Zealand-bred horses

in Australia during the spring, headlined by Te

Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle), Kolding (Ocean Park) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1,

2500m) winner Miami Bound (Reliable Man), only helped to reinforce the

opportunities Karaka presented, according to Kneebone.

“(New Zealand-breds) have had a great season right throughout the

world, but particularly in Australia where it has probably been one of our

best seasons for a number of years,” he said.

“We’ve got 14 new season sires there and a lot more new blood as far

as mares go and, on top of that, we do have an advantage in the way that

the foals have been grown this

year. Unfortunately, the way the

drought has affected Australia,

we’ve had the natural advantage

(with New Zealand’s climate).”

Perennial champion sire

Savabeel (Zabeel) will again

underpin the sale, with 74 Book

1 yearlings catalogued while the

new blood of freshman sires

Tarzino (Tavistock), Turn Me

Loose (Iffraaj), Tivaci (High Chaparral) and Preferment (Zabeel) is also

likely to capture buyers' attention.

The father and sons training operation of Hawkes Racing was a leading

buyer at the Magic Millions sale and Kneebone hoped Australian stables

of their ilk would also make their presence felt at Karaka.

Early bookings have suggested that Hong Kong buyers would also be

on the ground in New Zealand, despite the ongoing political turmoil in

their country as well as the sale clashing with Chinese New Year.

“As we saw on the Gold Coast, when one, two or three buyers don’t

turn up, someone arrives to fill in their shoes, so if they do that alternative

thing, there’s others that are coming who didn’t come last year.

“If you have a look at people like (Tony) McEvoy, the Hawkes’, those big

buyers, they will alternate (between sales) sometimes depending on what

they are buying, but I’m confident that all the big names will be there.”

Leading buyers at last year’s sale with horses heading to Australia

were highlighted by Guy Mulcaster and Chris Waller who bought eight

yearlings, Ciaron Maher Racing (nine) and the de Burgh Equine/

Shadwell Stud partnership who secured four yearlings for NZ$1.45

million.

Godolphin, Orbis Bloodstock and

agent John Foote, who are all expected to be in attendance next week,

were also active.

Te Akau principal David Ellis, the long-time leading buyer at the

Karaka sale, has again been impressed by what he has seen of this year’s

yearlings.

“I think the mild winter we have had has really boosted the yearlings

as I have seen so many that are well grown, correct and very athletic,” Ellis

said.

“This year’s catalogue has a great mix with some of our proven stallions

but I’ve also seen individuals by the first season sires like Vadamos, Turn

Me Loose and Tivaci, to name a few, that I really like so there will be

something on offer for everyone.”

Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre, who oversees the

Brendan and Jo Lindsay-owned operation, was circumspect about the

NZB sale despite strong market sentiment experienced at the Gold Coast.

“I’ve been asked to predict how the Karaka sale will go, and my reply

was that I don’t make predictions,” Plumptre said.

“I think that any expectation that we’ll just continue off what happened

in the Magic Millions Sale would

be wrong. We’re not offering the

same product, and it’s not the

same market.

“We’re selling different

types of horses who’ll run over

different distances. But hopefully

we can entice a good number of

Australian buyers over – they are

our major market. New Zealand

Bloodstock has given good

reports about bookings and

things like that.”

Kneebone did not

necessarily disagree with

Plumptre’s view.

“Like all markets, if (Magic

Millions) have a good sale,

then it’s a good thing for the

industry and

that normally

follows on for us

as well,” he said.

“Yes, they are two different sales, but at the end of the

day, people are going there to buy a certain type of horse

and then they come to New Zealand to buy another type

of horse before moving onto other sales as well.”

The NZB Karaka Yearling Sale is preceded by

Saturday’s twilight Karaka Million race meeting at Ellerslie

and Kneebone said that also augured well for the auction.

“The Karaka Million is huge now. That is one thing

where we can see whether or not the numbers are getting

bigger because people are ringing up wanting to go to the

races from overseas,” he said.

“That (NZB) VIP hospitality marquee has got bigger

and bigger each year. The Aussies love a good race day

and it’s one of the best you can go to.”

AUSTRALIA

Avalon back for John Dillion StakesThe Shane Nichols-trained Streets Of Avalon

(Magnus) will begin his autumn campaign in

Saturday’s John Dillon Stakes (Listed, 1400m)

at Caulfield, after plans to race the five-year-

old in Dubai were shelved. "It was always in the

preparation to have him ready for 1400 metres

first-up because initially a month ago he was

going to go to Dubai and run on Thursday over

1400 metres, but it was too expensive to fly him

there," Nichols said. "So he has had two trials

and he is going to improve on whatever he does

but he will run in the John Dillon. With 59.5

kilos off a 54 minimum he can be competitive,

but it does make it tough for him to win under

those conditions. But he's in really good shape

and he's sound and well.”

Track conditions todecide Saturday targetsUnderfoot conditions could prove to be a key

factor in the final destination for a number

of potential runners in Saturday’s feature

races. Crack Me Up (Mossman) and Wu

Gok (Sebring) are equal topweights for the

Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick

with the pair also in the mix for the Sunshine

Coast Cup (Listed, 1400m) in Queensland.

Randwick was rated soft yesterday with rain

forecast later in the week while some rain could

fall up north. Sambro (Fastnet Rock), Chapter

And Verse (Rothesay) and Intuition (Street Cry)

are also entered in both races with acceptances

taken this morning. The Ciaron Maher and

David Eustace-trained Yulong January (King

Of Prussia), winner of his past four starts, is

entered for both the Carrington and the John

Dillon Stakes at Caulfield.

Diamond pathnot confirmed for Larimer StreetThe Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained

Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) will take his chance

in Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preview (C&G)

(Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield but a decision on

whether stablemate Larimer Street (Brazen

Beau) will join him will be left until later in the

week. "We're 50-50 with Larimer Street at this

stage, we'll speak to the owners over the next

couple of days and weigh things up," Busuttin

told Racing.com. “He galloped very strongly

this morning so we're just thinking about which

is the best way to get to the Blue Diamond. He'll

only have one shot at it, whether it be this race

or the Prelude, so we'll probably pay up (for

Saturday) and see what the draw is."

Busuttin excited about Acting’s autumnGroup 2-winning filly Acting (Savabeel) will

run in next month’s Kevin Hayes Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m) at Caulfield with connections already

having an eye on big-race targets further

down the line. The filly has not been seen

since finishing fifth in the Thousand Guineas

(Gr 1, 1600m) in October and co-trainer Trent

Busuttin explained: "We purposely pulled the

pin straight after the Guineas, we didn't want to

push her further, so she's had a good break and

she's definitely come back bigger and stronger.

She'll trial up next week and she's entered for

the Group 3 fillies race over 1200m (Kevin

Hayes Stakes) first-up on February 8.” Looking

further afield, Busuttin told Racing.com:

"Basically she'll tell us where to go from there

but I'm looking forward to seeing her get over

a trip in Sydney later on in races like the Vinery

and the Oaks. She's bred to get out over further

and she'll love a wet track if it's wet up there.”

Missile on track for All-Star spot

Currently sitting at the top of voting for the

$5 million All Star Mile (1600m), Star Missile

(Smart Missile) looks likely to gain a spot

in the race at Caulfield on March 14. Voting

opened last week and the Greg Eurell-trained

Star Missile, who has a large group of owners

in a Hancox Bloodstock syndicate, leads the

way ahead of star Queensland three-year-old

Alligator Blood (All Too Hard). "He will trial

next week at Geelong and have his first run

at Flemington on the 15th on February in a

1400-metre open handicap," Eurell said. "He'll

then step into either the Shaftesbury Avenue

over 1400 metres or the Blamey Stakes at 1600,

and then hopefully from there it gives us a

couple of weeks to the All-Star Mile."

All-Star no certainty for MotherBegood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie) heads

to Friday’s Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at

Moonee Valley figuring prominently in early

voting for the All-Star Mile but trainer Daniel

Bowman said the five-year-old is far from

certain to head to Caulfield for the valuable

race. The gelding sits in sixth position in early

polling and he is on the fourth line of betting

at $15 with Alligator Blood the $6 favourite. "At

the moment we've definitely locked in Friday

night's race and then the Orr and the Futurity,"

Bowman said. "And then it will depend how

he races in those races. If he wins one of the

two 1400-metre Group 1s, it might be an All-

Star Mile. If he doesn't win one of them it will

potentially be a Queensland preparation for

three Group 1s."

Sandown test for Paris PikeParis Pike (Uncle Mo) will attempt to illustrate

his Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) credentials

when he lines up in the Le Pine Funerals Plate

(1300m) at Sandown today. The colt is among

106 three-year-olds entered for the Group 1

contest at Flemington on February 29 along

with three of his rivals in today’s race - Bellows

(Zoffany), By A Whisker (Fastnet Rock) and

Recognise (Zoustar). "It was worth throwing a

nomination in and it will be interesting just to

see what he does," trainer Greg Eurell said. "I

don't mind the horse. I think he has improved

since last time in. He's still a colt but he's a very

big horse. I think he's quite tough and I like his

attitude for a colt. It will just be interesting to

see what he can do."

Price/Kent to unleashmore 2YOsThe Mick Price-Mick Kent Jnr partnership will

unveil another pair of potentially talented two-

year-olds at Moonee Valley on Friday, after the

duo pleased in their work on Monday morning.

Loudspeaker (Sepoy) and Outflank (Tapit)

have been given the go ahead to contest the

$60,000 two-year-old maiden (1000m) with

Kent Jnr reporting the latter to be the furthest

forward. "Both have had two jump-outs, both

have gone well," Kent Jnr told Racing.com. "She

(Outflank) led the gallop in front of the Sepoy

filly Loudspeaker. I thought on the line the

Tapit filly was going the better, but she is more

exuberant. (We) just need to get a nice run on

Friday night, hopefully she can relax. She's the

sort of filly that will roll forward.”

Nature Strip wins trial

Star sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi) showed

he is on target for a first-up tilt at next month’s

Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) when he

cruised to a barrier trial win at Warwick Farm

yesterday. The three-time Group 1 winner

easily led the 900 metre heat on the course

proper and went to the line hard-held under

James McDonald. White Moss (Mossman)

was second throughout and maintained that

position from Nature Strip's Chris Waller-

trained stablemate Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) who

worked home strongly ahead of Godolphin

mare Alizee (Sepoy). Waller has Royal Ascot

ambitions for both Nature Strip and Everest

(1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes. Nature Strip is

slated to resume at Flemington on February

15 while three-year-old Yes Yes Yes may also

run in the race or begin his campaign in

Sydney.

SA stars please at Morphettville trialsDanehill Stakes (Gr 2 1200m) winner Dalasan

(Dalakhani) impressed his connections at

the Morphettville jump-outs yesterday ahead

of his return in the Manfred Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m) at Caulfield next Saturday. "Stubby

(Jason Holder, jockey) said he had to shake

him up at one stage but that's him," co-

trainer Leon Macdonald said. Meanwhile,

the Heath 1100 Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) runner-

up Gytrash (Lope de Vega) also impressed

trainer Gordon Richards in his heat. "Gytrash

was having his first serious piece of work this

campaign and I was satisfied with his work

and more so the way he pulled up," Richards

told Racing.com. “The plan is to run Gytrash

first-up in the Lightning at Flemington on

February 15.”

Murphy excited about HastaNaracoorte based-trainer Sue Murphy is as

excited as she has ever been about one of her

horses after Hasta La War’s (Declaration Of

War) win at Murray Bridge over 1600 metres

on Saturday. "The phone has continued to ring

hot since Saturday with prospective buyers and

they've been talking telephone numbers almost

with the figures, but honestly he's not for sale,"

Murphy said. "That's why I've been going to the

sales for years to find him. Why am I going to sell

him and buy another 10 with the money looking

for another one?” Winner of the $100,000 Skybeau

Stayers Series Final (2500m) at Morphettville on

November 5 last year, Hasta La War’s next start is

likely to be in the Birthday Cup (Listed, 200m) at

Morphettville on February 15 ahead of a possible

Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) tilt.

Rae eyes change of luck with O’Brien importYoung trainer Alexander Rae has described

the last 12 months as frustrating but is hoping

for a change of luck in 2020 and he prepares

Group 1-placed European import Fleet Review

(War Front) for the autumn. Formerly trained

by Aidan O’Brien, the five-year-old entire has

had over a year off of the track to overcome

feet issues but worked impressively at Moonee

Valley on Monday. "Time has done him the

world of good and there's absolutely no sign of

any feet issues - he's going really well," Rae told

Racing.com. "With all that time off, taking him

to Moonee Valley to get the blood flowing again

is pretty important for a five-year-old stallion.”

Rae has flagged the Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2,

1100m) or Southern Cross Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)

as potential starting points for Fleet Review.

O’Meara cleared to rideAfter being involved in a trackwork incident on

August 26 last year, Shanae O’Meara has been

cleared to return to the saddle after undergoing

a CT scan on Monday and meeting with her

neurosurgeon. "I was in hospital until 28 October,

and then I was an outpatient," O’Meara said. “I'm

still doing rehab at the moment, but next week

will be my last week. He (neurosurgeon) said that

I had no swelling whatsoever of the brain, and that

the bone had closed over, and would continue to

strengthen.” On being able to ride again, O’Meara

added: "I'm very excited; it doesn't feel real. I

never thought it would happen this quickly. I'm

so grateful for the support everyone has given me.

The racing industry has been great."

Pike confident aheadof Karaka MillionTony Pike expressed his confidence in his

Karaka Million 2YO (RL, 1200m) contender

Not An Option (Not A Single Doubt) after the

Group 2 winner galloped around the Ellerslie

course. “His work on Monday was good,” Pike

said. “He got up against the rail and Leith

(Innes, jockey) was really pleased with how he

handled the tight turn with the rail out. We are

pretty happy going forward, especially as the

horse he worked with, Merlini, is a pretty sharp

sort of sprinter. He finished his work off nicely

and pulled up well so we are pleased going into

Saturday. I think he just got a bit lost around the

turn at his first go at Ellerslie. That experience

and the gallop there on Monday should result in

him being a lot more professional on Saturday.”

Expensive 3YO todebut at AvondaleTrainer Grant Cooksley is hoping Dragon Run

(More Than Ready), a NZ$500,000 New Zealand

Bloodstock Yearling Sale purchase, can kick off

his career on a winning note when he runs in

a 1200 metre maiden at Avondale today. The

three-year-old half-brother to Group 2 winner

Ego (E Dubai) has shown promise but had his

debut delayed after a setback last year. “He

had a wind operation, but seems to have come

through it well,” Cooksley said. “He has shown

ability and won nicely at the trials. He’s got the

inside draw and it’ll all depend on how good he

jumps out. It’s going to be interesting.”

Spencer lands Sacred ride at Sha TinJamie Spencer, former champion jockey in both

Ireland and the UK, will be on board Sacred

Capital (O’Reilly) when the Macau star returns

to Sha Tin to contest Monday’s Centenary

Vase (Gr 3, 1800m). “The owners were keen

to get Jamie Spencer to fly in for the day to

ride him, fortunately that has worked out for

us,” trainer Joe Lau said. “The horse travelled

back very well on the barge after his last run

and he has pleased me at home since then.

He has now arrived back safely again in Hong

Kong for Monday’s race.” Ryan Moore has also

been granted permission to ride at the annual

Chinese New Year meeting where he will be

on board More Than This (Dutch Art), a three-

time winner in the UK for Richard Fahey before

transferring to Francis Lui, in the feature race.

Winning Method heads Purton’s Valley bookZac Purton heads into today's Happy Valley

card with his smallest book of rides this season

but the champion jockey is upbeat that Winning

Method (Holy Roman Emperor) might ensure

a good strike-rate on the night. “A few horses I

was booked to ride didn’t get in; they were on

the reserve list,” the rider explained. Purton’s

five mounts on the nine-race card is one less

than his next lowest this term, but could have

been only four. The withdrawal of Brave Power

(Declaration Of War) resulted in standby starter

Winner’s Heart (Ambidexter) being promoted.

back-to-back. Grant van Niekerk partnered the

three-year-old for a return to form last time but

that at the races as well,” he said.

Lor hopes for Classic Mile repeatFrankie Lor swept the Four-Year-Old Classic

Series in 2019 but one year after Furore (Pierro)

set the ball rolling in the Hong Kong Classic Mile

(Listed, 1600m), the trainer is this time pinning

his hopes prudently rather than nailing them

assuredly. The horse carrying the Lor standard

into Monday’s first race of the three-leg series is

the promising Decrypt (Dark Angel) who finished

third behind Phoenix Of Spain (Lope De Vega)

and Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) in the Irish 2,000

Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) pre-import. Lor believes the

Series’ first leg will be within the scope of a horse

who scored over 1200m and 1400m in Ireland but

is unsure as to how he will stretch out for the Hong

Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) and Hong Kong

Derby (Listed, 2000m). “I think the mile should

be no problem – 1800 and 2000 metres, we don’t

know yet,” the trainer said.

Empire Maker goneEmpire Maker (Unbridled), the sire of 12 Grade

1 winners and grandsire of Triple Crown winner

American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile), died at

Gainesway Farm in Kentucky on Saturday aged

20, after a battle with a rare disease that affected

his immune system.

Bred and raced by Juddmonte Farm and trained

by Bobby Frankel, Empire Maker had a glittering

2003 campaign in which he was the only three-

year-old colt of his generation to win three Grade

1 races. He began his own career at stud the

following year at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington

before being sold to the Japan Bloodhorse

Breeders’ Association in November 2010. Empire

Maker stood at the Shizunai Stallion Station until

2015, when he was brought back from Japan by

Gainesway and Don Alberto.

Arrowfield Stud yesterday

announced that leading sire Not A

Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice)

has been retired from stud duties

after the 18-year-old was diagnosed with

pulmonary disease which despite treatment

has shown no improvement.

“He suffers respiratory compromise at

rest and even short periods of hand walking

exacerbate this,” Arrowfield’s chairman John

Messara explained.

“Our head vet has advised that Not A Single

Doubt is incapable of performing his breeding

duties and accordingly he has been retired from

active service.”

“Not A Single Doubt is a wonderful story

for Arrowfield and for many breeders, owners,

buyers and trainers, rising from the bottom of our

roster to become one of Australia’s most popular

and successful stallions,” Messara added.

“We are immensely grateful to him, and he

will be loved and cared for at Arrowfield for the

rest of his life.”

From the first-crop of the late champion

Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), Not A Single

Doubt is out of the stakes-placed mare Singles

Bar (Rory’s Jester) who herself was a half-sister

to top sire Snippets (Lunchtime).

Trained by Tony Vasil, he raced ten times

for four wins, including two at stakes level, plus

a further two placings.

Not A Single Doubt is the sire of 69 Group

and Listed winners from 1000 to 2600 metres,

including 25 juvenile stakes winners and 11

Group 1 winners headed by Extreme Choice,

Kenedna, Miracles Of Life, Scales of Justice,

Secret Agenda, Single Gaze & Samadoubt.

He was the leading Australian-based sire

on worldwide prize-money in 2015/16, has

been a top ten sire of two-year-olds since 2011

and is currently third on the Australian 2019/20

2YO Sires’ Premiership.

At the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale, Not A Single Doubt was the third

highest grossing stallion, with 32 lots sold for a

total of $11,025,000 at an average of $344,531.

He has two lots catalogued in Book 1 of the

upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka

Yearling Sale and five lots catalogued at each

of the Inglis Classic and Inglis Premier Yearling

sales.

Strong opposition to proposed

legislation affecting the racing

industry was aired at a feisty meeting

held at Awapuni Racecourse

yesterday evening.

Staged by the Racing Industry Transition

Agency’s (RITA) Dean McKenzie, the meeting

attracted more than 120 industry-associated

people from the Wellington, Taranaki,

Wanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa districts.

Prior to the start of the meeting the writer

spoke with owner-breeders Mark Verran and

Charlie Rose. When asked if they thought there

might be some fireworks, both replied “We

certainly hope so!”

Among those in attendance were Alasdair

Robertson (chief executive of Race Group,

which oversees six racing clubs in the area),

Bernard Hickey (NZ Thoroughbred Owners

Association), trainers Jeff Lynds and Kevin Gray

plus Jim Wallace (trainer and studmaster of

Ardsley Stud) and Gary Thomas of Seaton Park.

McKenzie skipped any explanation of

proposed Racing Bill #2 and went straight to a

Q&A session which brought about a number

of questions and concerns, many of which will

very likely be raised at similar meetings this

week as well as at next week’s yearling sales.

Submissions to the select committee are open

until February 11th.

Early questioning surrounded the proposed

bill’s centralization of power with the Racing

Minister and his total control of re-appointment

of chairman, as well as the seven-member

board. The industry codes (thoroughbred

racing, harness racing and greyhounds) are

displeased that none will be represented in the

manner proposed and recommended in the

Messara Report, which is/was supposedly the

foundation of the legislation.

McKenzie’s response, that code-

represented appointees had not been successful

in the past, was countered with the belief that

those with “skin in the game” need to be on the

board rather than bureaucrat appointees.

A further question asked exactly who

McKenzie was working for: “The Minister or the

industry?”

Revenue, expenditure, profits, turnover and

the much hoped for increase in stakes monies

were other topics discussed. Also discussed

was intellectual property, who owned it and

what was it worth?

From young Oliver Bau (17) was: “Why is the

Racing Bill going to the Transport Committee and not

the Primary Production Committee, which handles

racing?” Oliver‘s parents are ex-jockey Trevor Bau and

past Trackside presenter Donna Beck.

Often under the gun, McKenzie held his

ground with his apparent support for the

proposed legislation as written. Given his

stance, he was understandably combative. The

writer also sensed a dismissive tone.

McKenzie promised to take the concerns to

the Minister but the dismissiveness prompted

one comment along the lines of: “Given your

support for the legislation as written compared

to our virtually 100 per cent negative response to

the legislation, how can we be sure that you will

transmit our concerns back to the Minister?”

While conducted is a respectful manner,

the meeting should have given McKenzie and

the RITA a clear indication that submissions

will be many and are opposed to what is a

departure from the Minister’s own comments

at the release of the Messara Report.

The ever-expanding Cranbourne

Turf Club’s training centre will be

home to South Africa’s Mike de

Kock; the currently Caulfield-based

combine Mick Price and Michael Kent junior

and to a relocating local Michael Kent (senior)

by the end of this year according to CTC chief

executive Neil Bainbridge.

“We’re finalising permits now and

construction of the new stables will begin in

four to six weeks and be completed within

six months,” Bainbridge told ANZ Bloodstock

News.

The Cranbourne Training Centre, the

largest thoroughbred training facility in the

southern hemisphere, currently services 750-

800 horses actively in work and will continue

to grow to cater for as many 1150 horses daily

as other Caulfield trainers, and possibly others

from alternate homes, join the migration to

the Cranbourne facility which now boasts four

grass training surfaces.

The changing landscape will also see a new

trainer take over the 40 box on-course barn

previously occupied by the now unlicensed

Robbie Laing, who vacated at the start of January.

“The club called for expressions of interest

which formally closed at 4pm on Monday.

The response was strong as you’d expect and

included pitches from quite a few external

trainers,” Bainbridge said.

De Kock’s son Matthew will arrive in

Melbourne in February and will work with the

Robbie Griffiths team to become more familiar

with the Cranbourne set-up while Michael Kent

has sold his off-track stables in Laurie Cleary

Lane, adjacent to the centre, and will move

to a 30 box barn on-course which he plans to

complement with a Gippsland farm.

Kent’s property sale also settles next month

and he intends to take a mid-year European

sabbatical before returning to training. In the

interim, his horses will be likely dispersed to

other trainers with Anthony Freedman and

Phillip Stokes earmarked for several of those

co-owned by the trainer.

Cranbourne training centre set for furtherexpansion as trainers look to relocate

Mike de Kock RACING POST

“The club is, of course, delighted that a

trainer of Mike de Kock’s stature has chosen

Cranbourne and it’s a measure of Robbie

Griffiths’ good will and great character that he’s

happy to take on Matthew who will become a

rival,” Bainbridge said.

“Matthew spent ten days or so here during

the last spring and we have consulted, at great

length, with father and son.

“We do have a phenomenal, stand-

alone training complex here with no racing

impediment and we are in the constant

process of upgrade with two new grass tracks, a

proposed second swimming pool which should

be completed by the end of the year and, longer

term, a major veterinary hospital which is

paramount given the focus on equine welfare.”

The centre’s two main grass tracks, of

2200 and 2400 metres, have been augmented

- in partnership with Racing Victoria - by a

1400-metre trial track which opened two weeks

ago and a 1700-metre track (25 metres wide

with state-of-the-art drainage) which should be

in operation by springtime.

“The state government and RV(Racing

Victoria) have committed $40 million to assist

in the relocation of trainers from Caulfield and

a $25 million spend will add 300 horses to our

capacity at Cranbourne,” Bainbridge continued.

“We have the space but everything has a

capacity and once we add 300 horses, I’m not sure

we’d be shopping around for further trainers. We’ve

had proposals from a large number of Caulfield-

based trainers already and we are going to see that

significant increase in horses numbers.”

De Kock, with a 60 horse barn; Prince

and Kent with 80 and Kent senior with 30,

will account for more than 50 per cent of the

expected increase.

“Now we’d average about 800 horses

training a day and that will therefore grow to

1100 or 1150 in active work,” Bainbridge said.

“Grass is still the preferred surface to train

on and we’ve listened and responded to that

and we also have the capacity to stage, every

Monday, official trials or jump-outs with the

latter effectively official trials these days.”

The on-course barns are constructed by the

club and industry on crown land and are leased

to the trainers. Kent senior is, in fact, paying for

the construction of his stables. “He is effectively

paying his rent in advance but will never own

it,” Bainbridge said.

Bainbridge said that the Cranbourne

door was not closed to Robbie Laing whose

bid to have his training licence reinstated was

rejected in December by RV which issued the

following statement: “In July, 2019, Victorian

trainer Robbie Laing was granted a short-

term renewal of his licence under a set of

financial conditions (valid until November

30). Mr Laing's licence was reviewed at Racing

Victoria's November board meeting with the

decision made not to renew his licence due to

some of the conditions not being met. Approval

of any future applications for a trainer's licence

will not be granted until Mr Laing is deemed a

financially suitable candidate."

“I would certainly see him (Laing) coming

back to train once his financial situation is sorted

out and and whether that’s at Cranbourne would

obviously depend on his desire and availability at

the time,” Bainbridge added.

In October 2014, the club opened its new

grandstand at the racecourse and announced

a $4.9 million investment to construct

the first phase of on-course stables which

eventually saw Robbie Griffiths, Greg Eurell,

Trent Bussuttin and Natalie Young and Enver

Jusufovic as the first tenants.

The Cranbourne Turf Club was last season’s

Country Racing Victoria Club of the Year.

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

The track record holder over the course

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

VERDICT C&D winner Garlic Yeah has been placed twice in higher-gradecompany here this season and has the services of Zac Purton

today, while Victorious Seeker shaped as though this longer trip might suit whensecond over 1m1f three weeks ago. However, the most interesting option is arguablywell-handicapped 7yo ART OF RAW, who gained his only Hong Kong win over C&Dand has performed respectably over inadequate trips for his new stable in recentweeks.

VERDICT All Times Grateful took a good step forward when placed heresix weeks ago and remains lightly raced but he is drawn wide and

preference is for NOBLE DESIRE, who made an encouraging debut when midfieldover 5f at Sha Tin this month and has plenty of potential over today’s longer trip.Compassion Star and Navas are others to consider.

VERDICT This rather uncompetitive contest can go to CONFUCIUS DAY,who ran a big race from the front when second over C&D a

fortnight ago and has now been placed four times over C&D this season. AuroraSteed needs to improve to overcome his double-digit draw but his latest run wasquite encouraging and it looks significant that Joao Moreira has moved in for theride. California Rad has a mixed recond after only four starts but ran well when lastin action.

VERDICT The oldest runner in the line-up STAR MAJESTIC has lackedthe pace to pose a serious threat in 6f Class 3 sprints on recent

VERDICT Not a huge number of these make significant appeal, with plentyhaving questions to answer. Sangria is respected on his recent

fourth place finish but remains on a long losing run, whilst Righteous Mate wasdisappointing when well supported in the market in his latest start. The likeliestwinner appears to be DOR DOR who made his breakthrough over C&D last monthand has the services of Joao Moreira who can sit and stalk from an inside draw.

VERDICT It will be interesting to see how This Is Class gets on havingimpressed so much when last seen in action but this is a

competitive race in which to return from a long absence. Monkey Jewellery canbe relied upon to run his race with Moreira in the saddle, whilst Baltic Successdeserves another chance following his latest disappointment. However, the nod goesto BEAUTY SPARK, who showed up extremely welll in a race that promises to workout nicely last time out, and has the scope to progress further.

Spring’s major racing has highlighted

again that jockeys are arguably

the world’s greatest sportsmen

and women and, almost without

question, the most unique.

Regardless of age or gender; regardless of

background, reputation or accomplishments

they compete on equal terms. This even applies

to children (teenagers) if they happen to have

outridden their claim.

The world’s best travel from country to

country - probably with a business class airfare

- but without an appearance fee.

There is no other legitimate and physically

demanding sport where this happens. They risk

their lives daily.

They have greater balance and dexterity

than Kelly Slater and Valentino Rossi combined.

Greater fitness and upper body strength than

any other athlete according to several studies.

Greater courage is demanded of them

than in any other sport I can imagine. Not to

mention that split second decision making,

a component of most sports, is absolutely

exacerbated in race riding in terms not only of

winning but also survival.

This demands greater promotion and

celebration.

They come from extraordinarily diverse

backgrounds. Take this week at Flemington

alone.

Barend Vorster, here from South Africa via

Singapore, rides a winner on Oaks day. Young

South Australian Jake Toeroek scored on Derby

day - he’d not ridden a winner,

of any sort, in Melbourne until

January this year.

Meanwhile, Daryl “Digger”

McLellan, all but won the Oaks

on Never Listen on Thursday. On

Tuesday, he was punching them

around at Muswellbrook. The bush

reserves to first grade in two days is

unimaginable in any other arena.

There, at Muswellbrook,

he was locking horns with

61-year-old hall-of-famer Robert

Thompson who still more than

holds his own on any racecourse.

And while the usual suspects - Craig

Williams, Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Hugh

Bowman and Nash Rawiller - have largely

monopolised the Cup week winners (thus far)

- Billy Egan, Toeroek and Vorster along with an

Irishman and a handful of kiwis have been on

the board.

And on Cox Plate Day, 23-year-old Jamie

Kah had the better of 47-year-old Oliver who’s

been unstoppable since, in a Group 3 race

at the Valley while Linda Meech has also, as

always, been among the winners.

Meech has ridden more winners than any

other jockey in Victoria this season. She did

likewise, and by a fair way, last season.

Oliver may be nearing 50 but is riding

“better than ever” according to rival and

commentator Corey Brown.

Glen Boss is 50 and, in recent weeks, has

ridden the winners of two races worth $14

million and $7.5 million. No pressure.

They are quite remarkable these jockeys

coping with pressure and expectation and fear

of failure. The unheralded Declan Bates I’m

sure overcame elements of all of that to win

the Group 1 Rupert Clarke on Begood Toya

Mother.

Perhaps they learn to cope from an early

age. Michelle Payne rode her first winner at 15.

She was literally a little girl. I wondered then

at the almost surreal absurdity of wizened old

punters trusting their money to her. Little did

they know she’d win the Cup.

Now the jockeys have one more thing

to cope with - the vitriol of social media as

Michael Walker, for whom I feel sorry, certainly

discovered this week.

Across the board, the only solution is to

turn off these often insidious platforms.

In Walker’s specific case, the solution may

be to ban the whip. It’s inevitable. And the

reality is that jockeys, here and around the

world, are so good they will adapt.

It was, unquestionably, a wonderful result

for Australasia in the 2019 Melbourne

Cup which produced the tightest finish

in 20 years.

However, it may be premature to declare

that it signals a return to continuing local

celebrations in the years to come on the first

Tuesday in November.

Less than one length separated the first five

to finish - from the winner Vow And Declare -

the Australian bred son of Declaration Of War

(War Front) - trained by Danny O’Brien to the

Paul Preusker trained Surprise Baby, the New

Zealand bred by Shocking (Street Cry) whose

career has been moulded in Australia.

The winner’s performance and that of

Surprise Baby, arguably the very best effort in a

very slowly run race, may be seen as portents of

a local resurrection.

While I’m sure that Vow And Declare and

Surprise Bay, veterans of just 13 and 11 starts

respectively, will remain forces in Australian

racing and that there are positive pointers

from the three-year-old stock of local stallions;

the argument against any wholesale local

rejuvenation in the Cup comes from the fact

that northern hemisphere bred runners filled

the other top seven placings in a race which had

just 2.1 lengths seperate the first nine.

The northern hemisphere bred three-year-

old Il Paradisio (Galileo) was arguably unlucky

not to have won and thereby produce a third

straight win for overseas bred and trained

horses of that age.

Lloyd Williams almost struck again with an

import, Master Of Reality (Frankel) which has

become a recurring theme. Prince Of Arran

(Shirocco) ran extremely well as he continues

to imitate/emulate the grand Red Cadeaux.
