But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ”Peace! The early part of the summer, I took a renewal leave. Whether or not I am as renewed as I had hoped is questionable, though I am grateful for the time I had and the things I was able to do that are different than the normal “summer work” of a DS. One especially lovely day in July I went to a favorite restaurant on the shore of Lake Onondaga in upstate New York. we enjoy. It’s a nice image for life but, of course, it is a vacation picture. It’s not the way things always go. In reality the lake where I was visiting experiences dramatic changes as the winds shift and seasons move. In the winter it is ice covered and bitter cold. During fall and spring – and at other times during the year – winds shift along the hillside and storms brew over the horizon, quickly and dramatically changing the lake from peaceful to turbulent. I know because I’ve seen it happen. And, as we can tell from the scripture passage above, the Sea of Galilee was and is just as prone to quick changes. I’ve visited Israel and on the day I crossed the Lake there, it was calm, clear with a beautiful blue sky but the storms can come and things change quickly just as they did on that day when Jesus crossed the lake with his followers. The story tells us he was tired, so tired that he fell asleep in the boat and stayed asleep when the weather changed and a storm blew up. Apparently, it was a pretty violent storm because his disciples, in the boat with him, were having trouble managing – and remember among them were men who had sailed and fished that lake for a living. They were experienced and still they were afraid! And when they turn to Jesus, he calms the storm. Simple as that – except he does ask, “Why are you afraid?” and, “Have you so little faith?” It’s a great image for life, isn’t it? And it’s a great illustration of just what happens when we think things are going along well and we’re having smooth sailing. Things happen! The wind shifts! Disaster looms! And we, like the disciples – panic. We forget, just as they forgot, that we’re never in the boat on the lake alone. Jesus is there. He is with us. And when we ask, he’ll calm the storm and still the waves for us just as he did for his friends that day. We just have to remember that he’s in the boat with us! As I write this article, we’re all about to enter into the busy season of the church year when things gear up again after a tranquil summer (my apologies to those who moved this year, it may not have been so tranquil for you but I hope you know what I mean). Fall brings a return to regular schedules, events and activities. Many of you have already shared with me that you and your congregation are planning to do new things, to add services, classes, events and activities to more fully meet the needs of the congregation and to reach out to welcome the newcomers. While this is all wonderful, the truth is that it’s not going to feel very much like spending a nice afternoon watching the sailboats on a calm lake. Much of the time it may feel more like being in the boat during a raging storm wondering how you and your church and your pastor are going to make it through to the other side. Getting ready for all that is planned, dealing with conflicting schedules, adding in

fall district and conference meetings and trainings, getting ready for church conferences, all create breezes that turn into winds that churn up waves and toss us around on the sea of life. So, I think it’s important to remember that we’re never alone in the boat. Jesus is there. Jesus is ready to help. Jesus can bring calm and peace to any situation. We need to be ready to take the deep breath, turn our eyes on Jesus, and ask for his help so that the events, activities, meetings, missions, worship, Sunday school, programs – all that we have planned stay Christ-centered. That’s what will keep our boats from sinking beneath the waves and bring us safely to the shoreline. That’s my wisdom gained from my renewal time and a relaxing day by the lake. The days come and go, weather and seasons changes, storms come – but Jesus is always in the boat.

Peace – and good sailing! Betsy

NY/CT DISTRICT CHURCH CLUSTER GROUPS

We are called to be servants of Jesus Christ and servant leaders; therefore the names Lay Ser-vant and Lay Servant Ministries are most appropriate for this ministry of leading, caring and communicating. Lay Servant Ministry is a United Methodist system for lay leadership development. The basic and advanced courses are designed to help persons develop their skills in leadership, commu-nication and care-giving. This training helps build relationships with other lay leaders, and in-creases opportunities for individuals and congregations to be in ministry with others. Accord-ing to the Discipline, a lay servant is a professing member of a local church or charge confer-ence who is “ready and desirous to serve the Church and who is well informed on and commit-ted to Scriptures and the doctrine, heritage, organization and life of The United Methodist Church.” A lay servant “has received specific training to develop skills in witnessing to the Christian faith through spoken communication, church and community leadership, and care-giving ministries.” Courses are open to anyone. The order of classes and/or those needed for certification proc-ess may vary. For example, a lay person may take the basic course or an advanced course be-fore deciding to officially apply for Lay Servant Certification. Step 1: Upon completion of the Basic Lay Servant course and with local church/pastor ap-proval, a lay person will become a Local Church Lay Servant. To maintain this status you must file an Annual Report each year at the home church Charge Conference, and you must take a refresher course every three (3) years. Step 2: To obtain Certified Lay Servant status, (local church Lay Servants who serve the local church and beyond), you must take at least one advanced course. To become a Lay Speaker (Certified Lay Servant who provides pulpit supply), you must complete any additional required courses and also be approved by the District and Annual Conference Committee on LSM. Advanced courses will be offered for the NY/CT District throughout the year. For a list of courses available, please contact Frank Atkins, NY/CT Director, Lay Servant Ministries, at [email protected].

Please see the registration forms for upcoming class offerings that follow.

What is Lay Servant Ministries? The 2012 General Conference of The United Methodist Church adopted resolutions changing the name and scope of Lay Speaking Ministries to Lay Servant Ministries.
