DANtE~ALIGHIERI, born at Florence, May-June 1265; died Ravenna, Sept.14, 1321.Because of poB tical activity, he fled from Florence for good in 1301, and in 1302was sentenced in absentia to death. The DIVINE COMEDY is his most famous wri ting-an allegory of human life in the form of a vision of life beyond the grave, writtento convert a corrupt society to righteousness. Dante is led through hell (Inferno),purgatory (Purgatorio) and heaven (Paradiso), (3 top values have design from each book). This sacred poem sums up the knowledge and intellectual attainment of the Middle Ages, giving a complete picture of 13th century Catholicism in Italy. The portrait ofDante is from the "Disputa" by Raphael in the Stanze of Raphael in the Vatican Palace.

VYTAUTASKAZYSJONYNAS- Designer of Vatican Stamps.

Vytautas Kazys Jonynaswas born March 16 at Udrija, Provrnce of Duzkija, in south-eastern Lithuania. He graduated from public school in Kaunas in 1927, and in 1931

went to Paris to study at the Conservatoire desArts et Metiers and then at the Ecole Boulle in1935. Returning to Kaunas, he taught thegraphic arts at the Art College and eventuallybecame headmaster. In 1936>he was made chair-man of the National Service Bureau for the Pre-servation of Cultural Monuments. At the ParisWorld Fair in 1937 he won gold medals for wood-cuts and posters, as well as diploma's for in-terior design. He received the LithuanianState Prize in 1940 for his illustrations ofthe "Seasons"by K. Donelaitas. Riga saw anextensive exhibition oLhis works in 1944.

Aft erWor Ld /war II he >wentto the AIlleri canZone of Occupied Germany as a displaced person. Here he volunteered t()open an .arts center tooccupy the minds of idle displaced persons, butwas turned down. In the French Occupied .Zonehe found a friend fromhisParisdays'''1ho heldan official position in the French Zone. Withhis assista.nce, Jonynasopened an arts centerat FreiburglnBrelsgau,..;The Foreign Instituteof Fine Arts. Herein 1946 another exhibitionof his works was a success.

The French officials wanted postage stamps forthe French Zone of Occupation which includedBaden,. Rhineland-PfalZ, Wurtemburg and the Saar.Jonynas had. designed some <stamps for Lithuania, which h~q been printed but never issued, becauseof the Russian siezure of Lithuania.

For Baden a total of nine desi gns were printedin three sets ,which differed>in color and indication of value (5NI-33!5N37-40!5NB9-11).

For the Rhineland-Pfalz or Rhine Palatinate there were twelve desi gns ,in three setswhich also had changes of color and varied indication of. value. (6NI-38)

The eight designs for Hurtemburgresulted in thirty seven stamps (8Nl-37) which alsohad the changes of color and indication of value.

For the Saar his six designs were first printed and then surcharged (155-187)

As works of art these designs have received high praise from German philatelistssuch as the article in "Die Semmler-Lupe" (The Collector's Eye), No. 17, <November,1954, in an article by Sepp Schuler on Famous Stamp Designers, which points outthat the stamps des~gned by Jonynas far surpass anything that had appeared in theGerman £i eld of phi lately for some time.

In 1951 he came to the United States, where he has become a ci tlzen. His teachingat the School of Building at Mainz, Germany,at the Art College of Kaunas and atthe Superior Art Institute of Lithuania, as well as his experience at the ForeignInsti tute of Fine Arts at Frei burg in Breisgau, quali fied him to teach at

VYTAUTAS KAZYS JONYNAS (Cont,)Fordham University, where he still continues to teach at the Adult Education Center. With one of his students from Fordham, he has established the Jonynas and ShepherdStudio of Art on Long Island. The Studio actually began when Jonynas was askedto work on some stained glass windows for a church. In Europe the design issubmitted, and when accepted it is executed by a company specializing in stainedglass windows. But Jonynas found that in America he had to master the whole pro-cess from design to the cutting of the glass, firing the glass, leading the window, and finally its installation in the church. Since opening his studio he hasdecorated more that fifty churches and chapels in the United states.

When Pope Pius XII planed to cotnnlen'!oratethe birth of St. Casimir on a postagestamp in 1958, to call world attentJon to the communist persecution of the Churchin Lithuania, just as he had done in the case of Poland through the stamps ofOur Lady of Ostrabrama and Our Lady of Czestochowa, Bishop Padolskis, a Lithuanianexile living in Rome, wrote to Jonynas asking him to submit a aesign and to havein in Rome WITHIN A WEEK. Within the time limit the design for the stamp, to beprinted by rotogravure, was in Rome. The design was accepted, but the printingwas delayed in Rome, the method of printing was changed to engraving and ,thedesign was altered.(Cf. illustrations and article by Ernest A. Kehr in VaticanNotes, Vol. VIII, #4, p.9; Jan-Feb. 1960). Nevertheless, the stamp was issuedon December 14, 1959, and Mr. Jbnynas refused to submit a bill for the St. Casimirdesign (Vat. 264-5), because the honor of designing the stamp was enough rewardfor him. When the Vatican Pavilion for the New York World Fair of 1964-65 was under contem-plation, the designs of the Jonynas and Shepherd Art Studio were chosen for theeleven bas-reliefs to decorate the exterior walls. The main work on the wallnear the entrance was the "Communion of Saints" depicting the Church Triumphant, the Church Mill tant and the Church Suffering, and it measures 21 by 27 feet. Itwas intended to cast this in cement and its estimated weight was 18-20 tons. Thisalmost gave the architects and engineers fits, because such a weight would haveslowly sunk the Vatican Pavilion into the swampy land called the Flushing Meadows. The architects asked for a new concept. Rather than abandon the design, Jonynasturned to styrofoam, a material which he had used for moulds to cast cement. Twoinch thick styrofoam was glued to 3/4 inch thick plywood and the design was sculptedinto the styrofoam. The large piece was executed in nine interlocking pieces.Stones, glass and mosaics' were imbedded into the styrofoam and the whoe was brushedwi th 1/16 inch coating of epoxy cement , This resulted in a bas-relief weighing3000 pounds, and it was toggle-bolted to the walls. The ten smaller reliefs wereexecuted in the same manner by Jonynast partner, Shepherd. In addition to thiswork, the stainless steele cross which surmounts the Pavilion is the work of Jonynas. For the Chapel of the Good Shepherd he designed the altar and the monstrance.Even in this work he is once more allied to philately, because the Vaticancommemorated its participation in the World Fair by a series of four stamps in1964 (383-6)
