'PHIL'ING THE NET Phil Kessel currently leads the NHL in goals (9) and points (15), and is second in shooting percentage (33.3%). He also ranks first onToronto in game-winning goals (2) and shots (tie-27), and is second in assists (tie-6) and plus/minus (+5). Kessel has posted at leastone point in seven of eight games this season. He registered a five-game point streak (Oct. 6-19) to start the 2011-12 campaign afterfinishing last season on a 10-game point streak (Mar. 19 - Apr. 9) with 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) in that span. The 10-game stint wasthe longest point streak by a Maple Leaf since Mats Sundin went 11 consecutive games with a point during the 2005-06 season (Mar.25 - Apr. 15). Dating back to last season, Kessel registered at least one point in 15-straight games, totalling 23 points (11 goals, 12assists) before his streak was snapped on October 20 at Boston. GRABOVSKI HAUNTS FORMER TEAM Mikhail Grabovski helped set up Nikolai Kulemin's tying goal late in the third period and then scored the game-winner 1:23 into overtimein the Maple Leafs 5-4 win over the Canadiens in Montreal on October 22. Grabovski is only the second former Montreal player to scorea regular-season overtime goal against the Canadiens over the last seven seasons. He joins Mark Recchi, who did that for the Bruins inBoston on April 9, 2009. (Stat courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau.) ANOTHER STRONG START Toronto posted a 4-0-1 record in its first-five games of the season before suffering a regulation loss in Boston on October 20. TheMaple Leafs posted an identical 4-0-1 record after five games last season before suffering their first regulation loss on October 21 vs.NY Rangers. The last time the Leafs went undeafeated in regulation through at least six games to start a season was in 1993-94 whenthey won a franchise record 10-straight games to start the season. HOTTEST START FOR A LEAF IN OVER 65 YEARS According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Phil Kessel's seven goals in Toronto's first-five games of the season was the most by a MapleLeaf since Sweeney Schriner scored eight goals in the Leafs' first-five games in 1944-45. KESSEL NAMED NHL'S FIRST STAR OF THE WEEK Phil Kessel was named the NHL's First Star for the week ending October 16. Kessel topped all NHL scorers with eight points (fivegoals, three assists) and a plus-seven (+7) rating in three games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became just the third Leafsplayer in the past 66 years to score five goals in the team's first three games of a season, joining Darryl Sittler (1978-79) and WendelClark (1986-87 and 1991-92). Kessel also received First Star of the Week honours last season (Feb. 27), which was the last time aMaple Leaf was named one of the NHL's stars of the week. LEAFS GO OVER SIX PERIODS BEFORE ALLOWING FIRST GOAL OF SEASON Accoring to the Elias Sports Bureau, James Reimer's shutout streak of 101:41 to start the season was the third longest in franchisehistory. The Maple Leafs won their season opener 2-0 over the Canadiens on Thursday, and blanked the Senators in their secondgame through two periods on Saturday before Colin Greening's goal at the 1:42 mark of the third period. Only twice before had theLeafs gone that far into a season before allowing their first goal. In 1930-31, Toronto set an NHL record with five consecutive shutoutsto begin the season and gave up its first goal 11:42 into the first period of its sixth game. In 2000-01, Brett Hull was the first to scoreagainst the Maple Leafs at the 7:22 mark of the third period in the team's second game of the season against the Dallas Stars. KESSEL NETS FIRST LEAFS HAT TRICK Phil Kessel notched the third hat trick of his NHL career and his first for the Maple Leafs with three goals in Toronto's 6-5 win over theSenators on October 8. Kessel scored only one goal in his first 14 career games versus Ottawa but has since tallied 17 goals in 18games against the Senators. The last Leaf to record a hat trick in a game was Niklas Hagman on October 26, 2009 at Anaheim. REIMER SHUTS THE DOOR ON OPENING NIGHT James Reimer made 32 saves for the Maple Leafs in their 2-0 win over Montreal on October 6. It was the seventh season-openingshutout in Maple Leafs franchise history, but only their fourth in the last 71 years. Ed Belfour was the last Toronto goaltender to post ashutout in a season opener (2002-03 at Pittsburgh), and Curtis Joseph was the last to do so in a home opener (2000-01 vs. Montreal).(Stat courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau.)
