they me t by chance . The chance seems
to have been tha t Irene was good look
ing and Ga tz was from New York.
So they came he re toge the r, and the
gi rl sought to ful fil l he r s tage ambi
t i o n s .
H er s inging was l iked and she
wa s successful to the extent of w inning
applause in the music ha l l s of Coney
Is land . She a l so appea r ed for a t ime in
a t l ea s t one of the conce rt ha l l s on the
B o w e r y .

On occasions she reminded Ga tz of the
prom ise sh e says he made to marry he r,
but the ce remony was put off from t ime
to t ime , and finding tha t i t only made
t rouble to remind him of the i r re la t ions ,

he wa lked into the place . He did not see

There was a fie rce fi re ea rly yes te rday
morn ing in the Robinso n bui lding, an
e i g h t s t o r y b r i c k s t r u c t u r e , a t E a s t
B r o a d w a y , G o u v e r n e u r a n d D i v i s io n
st ree ts , f i ll ed w i th swea tsh ops . The ten
a n t s w e r e i n i m m i n e n t d a n g e r , a n d m a n y
were saved from dea th only by the da r
ing work of the fi remen.
The bui lding i s in a dense ly popula ted
dis t ric t , and the fi re , occurring qui te
ea rly in the morning, caused intense ex
c i tement .
Tenants in the adjoining bui lding were
a roused by the pol ice , and, ' sc reaming
and sc rambl ing, they made the i r way out
of the house in w i ld disorde r.
When the fi remen a rrived the flames
were roa ring up the sha ft s in the cent re
of the bui lding, having s ta rted on the
third floor.
Aaron Baege r, of Je rsey Ci ty, employed
on the fi fth floor, was pa rt ia l ly ov e rcome
by the smoke , and s tagge red out on the
fi re e scape . He s ta rted to jump, wh en

on the fifth floor, were almost cut off by
the flames. They had to break th roug h

sued to the a l leged w ife of the decedent
revoked and ' re i ssued to them as the next
of kin and he i rs of Gerlach.
The woman c la iming to be Mrs . Ger
lach was mar ried in 1875 to a man named
S m i t h , w h o s u b s e q u e n t l y s e c u r e d a n a b
solute dec ree of divorce from he r on ac
count of he r di srega rd of he r marriage
vows. The dec ree of divorce conta ined
the usua l provis ion inse rted in a l l abso
lute divorces granted in thi s S ta te , pe r
m i t t i n g S m i t h t o m a r r y a g a i n , b u t p r o
hibi t ing his w i fe from so doing whi le he
lived.

commenced an ac t ion in th e Supreme
Court to recover $25,000.

A p r i l b y h e r h u s b a n d C h a r l e s , f r o m
whom she obta ined a divorce in South
Dak ota in May. Mr. and Mrs . Winold
a re now in thi s c i ty .
Accord ing to Mrs . Winold, she was
compe l led to ins t i tute divorce proceed
ings because of he r husband's neglec t
and c rue l ty. Whi le she was in South Da
kota , the chi ldren, whom she had given
into the custody of a friend l iving in a
sub urb of Minneapol i s , Minn. , were
s tolen, she says , by he r husband. She
t raced them to thi s c i ty and w i l l bring
lega l proceedings to compe l he r husband
t o s u r r e n d e r t h e m .
