• Colony between English Colonies; New England and

Virginia

• Originally under Dutch control

• Easy access to the ocean through the Hudson River

• River access allowed it to become a major colony for

transportation of goods

• King Charles of England gave the colony

to his brother, The Duke of York

• After gaining the territory, he renamed

New Netherlands to New York

• The Duke of York divided the colony between the Hudson and Delaware
