The team was skipped by Membership-Secretary Cynthia Adams, who had with her Dot Belliss and Grey Power members Glenys Pidwell and Pam Burgess. Their opponents in the final were much younger women whose total ages were about 30% of theirs!! And the moral is??? You decide!! December’s meeting which featured Advance Care Planning was well attended. Dr Alan Mangan, supported by Jeannie Fowler from the DHB, explained in detail what ACP is all about and the variety of questions from members were indicative of the concerns which they experience as they grow older. In particular, the contentious matter of assisted dying was discussed at length and handled delicately by Dr Mangan. I have been commended by several members for initiating the discussion and two have requested publication of the supplied advertisement on page 3 relating to a meeting to be held in Wanganui on Sunday 1 March about End- of-Life Choice. Interestingly, the subject was covered in the Sunday Star Times of 17 January which referred to a group of Auckland University researchers whose findings on assisted dying were published in the Journal Of Palliative Medicine in December, 2014. Subscriptions are due in March and can be paid either by cheque or cash, in which case be sure to use the form in this newsletter or by internet banking. If using internet please be certain to identify the payment by surname and initials. Discount book is being updated and reprinted and will be sent to members on payment of their subscriptions. Those who are financial to 2016 will receive theirs in March. For your Diaries: Members’ meetings for the year will be held on 12 March, 11 June (AGM), 10 September and 10 December. Best wishes to you all Graham

A better deal for obtaining GlassesThe Ministry of Social Development (MSD),including Work and Income, Senior Services,StudyLink and Youth Services, has negotiatedwith selected optometrists and opticians tosupply glasses to people using hardshipassistance to pay for them.Contact them – if you think you need glassesor repairs and you need financial help to getthem. You will receive quality products andsupporting services at a very competitive price. This means you will have less debt to pay back. What this means for youMSD has negotiated an inclusive price for:• an eye test• lenses including single vision, bifocals orstandard progressives• frames (there are plenty of options to choosefrom)• a fitting service• repairs• a cleaning cloth and case• two year warranty on defective parts.

Your MSD appointmentIt is important that you make an appointmentwith MSD and see them first before going tothe optometrist or optician. You will only needone MSD appointment. You don’t need toprovide quotes from your optometrist oroptician. They will provide you with a list of approvedoptometrists or opticians in your area so youcan choose which one to go to.They will take you through the process andissue you with an MSD payment card if youdon’t already have one – if you have onealready, take it with you. The money on thepayment card can only be used at theoptometrist or optician you select.Your responsibilityAfter your MSD appointment, make anappointment with the optician you have

chosen and please tell them that you are anMSD client. The optician or optometrist willensure that all your information is keptconfidential and secure. You must take yourMSD payment card with you to your MSDappointment and to your appointment with theoptometrist or optician.

What happens nextOnce you’ve had your eye examination theoptometrist or optician will advise you of whatyou need. You will have a wide variety of frames to choosefrom within the selected range.Once you have chosen, the optometrist oroptician will tell you how much it will cost. Thisis the amount you will need to repay MSD.If your clinical needs are higher than normalyour optometrist will provide you with a quoteand you will need to contact MSD about theextra cost.

Choose carefullyThe inclusive price doesn’t include high end, more expensive frames or extras you may want. You can’t ‘top up’ or ‘up-grade’ with your ownmoney so you can obtain costlier items orextras. The optometrist or optician will only exchangeor repair a product if the glasses are faulty, not because you have changed your mind.If you break your glasses, the optometrist oroptician won’t replace them or refund moneyto you. If you need another pair of glasses youwill need to apply for hardship assistance again.Your glasses are covered by a two yearwarranty. If you glasses are faulty pleasecontact the optometrist or optician. There is no change to the qualification criteriafor receiving hardship assistance. MSD onlyadvances money to meet an immediate andessential need, not for added extras. source: www.msd.co.nz
