New Year Resolutions for Kids

It is a new year according to the calendar, but in most schools, we've just reached the half-way point. The tradition of making new year resolutions on New Year’s Eve is an age old custom dating back to the Babylonian era where people vowed to follow a new set of changes in their lives.

Resolve to be involved in your children's education in new ways this year. Studies show that kids whose parents are involved in their education have better grades, a better attitude toward school, and more appropriate school behavior than those with less involved parents. Getting involved in your child's education can be as simple as talking with your child each day about school and homework.

Your involvement could also include:

• Establishing a homework routine and providing your child with a good place to study — away from distractions like TV, video games, the phone, or loud music.

• Taking your child on trips, playing games together, and visiting the local library.

• Showing you value education by taking classes yourself or letting your child see you spending time reading.

• Volunteering at school to help in the classroom, library, office, or on field trips (clearances are required per the district’s policy).

• Attending school board meetings and getting involved with the PTO (parent-teacher organization).

• Reading to your child or have him read to you every day.

PTO Membership Contest Winners

Thank you for your continued support of Logan Elementary PTO!

Currently, we have 268 PTO members! As a part of our incentive to sign up for a PTO membership, we offered the room with the most memberships a class party. Congratulations to our winners, Mrs. Reigh's 3rd grade class, Room 118!!! They have selected an ice cream sundae party with all the fixings to kick off the new year. The date of their party is going to be April 27th. It was a close race as our top 5 also included Mrs. Gerbi, Mrs. Kolodychak, Mrs. Lenart, and Ms. Flebotte's classes. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Box Tops for Education Contest

Reminder, the Logan PTO Box Tops for Education Committee is holding a contest for the homeroom that turns in the most Box Tops for Education.

The winning homeroom will receive a party paid for by the PTO. The deadline for this contest is February 23, 2018. Reminder: Box Tops for Education have expiration dates and only current (non-expired) Box Tops will count toward this contest – don’t let yours expire; send in those Box Tops today! Please mark envelopes, Baggies or collection sheets with “PTO”, your child’s name, homeroom teacher’s name and classroom number, and send into school with your child between now and February 23, 2018. No staples, please. Collection sheets can be downloaded at www.boxtops4education.com.

Logan Elementary Science Fair

Polo T-shirts made by our own high school graphics department will be sold which the students can wear on the day of judging and/or on the day of the science fair. Informational packets will be sent home soon containing ideas for different science projects that students can choose. Projects can be brought in April 3rd, and judging will take place by students during the school day 4th. Parents can come enjoy the display of the projects and an award ceremony on April 5th from 6:30 -8 pm.

Logan Elementary will be holding our 3rd Annual Science Fair in April. Students are able to enter either an experimental project or a non-experimental project.

A Note from Our Principal

A belated Happy New Year to all!! To those I have not seen or chatted with since our reentry, I do hope your December break was filled with good times! Upon their return to school, your children were very excited to share their favorite memories of events that occurred during the break. It is fun for us to listen to their stories as we learn so much about what is so important to them.

Brrr!! We experienced some very cold days. We would like you to know that we make every effort to bring children outdoors as there is nothing better than a run outside in the fresh air. However, when the temperature takes a big dip – children stay indoors for recess. Please make sure your students are dressed appropriately for school. It is our recommendation that the students have a sweater that follows the dress code here at school. Reminder, coats and sweaters with hoods are not permitted in school. A copy of the updated dress code can be obtained on our website: www.eawaildcats.net under Our District, School Board, On-line Policy Manual, 200 Pupils, 221.

As we move through the cold days of January, let us remember Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan 15th. Below is a quote from the Morehouse College student newspaper in 1947. We as parents and educators are not only teaching students to be intelligent students but also teaching them to do the right thing and have good character to make this world a better place.

“Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”
