New Year 1 Parents Meeting

Thursday 7th July 2016 @ 9.00am

Aim

• Introduce you to Year 1 teachers

• Go through the changes from Reception to Year 1.

• Answer any questions!

Preparation for Year 1

• Named uniform please.

• New uniform on sale now from office.

• P.E. kit – named

• Getting ears pierced? (If so then please do it do it over summer)

Preparation for Year 1

• Reading at home over the summer- Library Summer Reading Project.

• Art activities – help with their fine motor skills, e.g. drawing, scissors, threading.

• Keep talking – modelling good speaking and listening.

• Name writing/ writing stories or diaries about what they have done (Letter formation).

First days • If your contact details have changed over the

summer please let us know.

• Entrance and exit through the classroom doors in playground.

• Please stay out of the fenced area before and after school as we set up activities in the morning and then in the afternoon. We can also see parents easier if you are standing back (and so can the children).

First days • If you want to speak to the teacher after

school, then please wait till all the children have been safely handed over to the parents.

• If you are not collecting your child then you must let the school know otherwise we will not release your child. A password system is in place that will only be valid for that day.

Transitions

Autumn term - Use outside space and break out space to create similar set up to reception. Free flow time - Focus group activities with an adult and child initiated activities. However there is more structure than reception and whole class teaching times, e.g. literacy/ phonics/maths/ guided reading. This will increase as year goes on especially after October half term.

Breaks and lunches

• Break time 10:20-10:40am

• Snack provided by government

• If you would like your child to have milk then this needs to be completed online via “Cool Milk”.

• Lunchtime 12:10-1:10pm (healthy schools)

• School dinners free for Infants, drinks tickets are available from the canteen at 8:40 to 8:50

Year 1 curriculum • Y1 is the start of the National

Curriculum

• Meeting in Autumn term about Year 1 expectations and Year 1 Phonics Screening – June 2017.

• Topic based approach in Year 1.

• After school clubs.

Tears!

• Probably one of the most difficult moves for children to adapt to.

• They miss their Reception teachers, support staff, garden, toys, classrooms, etc.

• Good transition here are Hilldene to slowly move them across to more structure and less free choice.

• Some do fight it and you may have tears! • Listen – Reassure – Talk to teacher – Smile –

Get them here! • 1st week parents allowed to accompany child into

Y1 classroom.

Parent and school

• Build on the great relationship you already have with Reception staff. Talk to staff before and after school as there is an open door policy.

• Home School Agreement – 1st parents evening usually.

• Reading nightly – please write in reading record so we can change it.

• Bring in book bags.

Parent helpers

• With a busy curriculum and a very busy day we are always grateful of any parent helpers who are willing to volunteer some of their time. If this is something that interests you then please talk to Mrs Durrant.

Parent support • Library books – share with your child and bring

back to school. Your child will not be able to get a new one until the old one has been returned or paid for if it gets lost.

• Phonics Books – Weekly checks and new words will be given out if child can read their list (real and nonsense words).

• Literacy and maths homework Go out Friday and come back Wednesday.

• Effort and Achievement Card • Golden Awards • Writer of the week • Reading certificates for moving up a book

band • Maths certificates • ‘Caught being good’ tokens • Certificates given out in assembly • Share celebrations from home, e.g. dancing

Attendance and Punctuality

• 90% on a test would be great! • 95% would be excellent! • However in terms of attendance 95% is

expected - 10 days • Vitally important, even at this young age,

to be here and to be on time. • No holidays will be authorised unless

exceptional circumstances arise. • Send your children in and if we feel they

are not well then we will call you.

September

• Very excited about September and are looking forward to working with you and your children.

• Enthusiastic and dedicated team whose main priority is to make your children feel safe, happy and to fill their brains with knowledge, skills and understanding.
