Band doesn't possess, asyet, the precision of Heath, thepolish of Geraldo, etc., etc. Thequalities which the variousorchestras quoted possess havenot been acquired overnight.

Give Cyril Stapleton and hisboys a chance to settle downand get used to their new role,and these desirable qualitieswill appear. The material isthere, for the most part, to weldinto a really fine orchestra.

Right now, Mr. Bentley andhis fellow -critics have no moreright to expect perfection thanI have to expect Ralph Burns'tone -colours and more scope forthe instrumentalists.

Finally, congratulations toall concerned, and especiallyTommy Whittle for a crackingperformance of " This Can't BeLove."

The Ladies AgainTN answer to the latest epistle1- from Mr. May, we wouldlike to state that his vitupera-tion leaves us bloody but un-bowed (quite apart from theobvious fact that it is a woman'sprerogative to have the lastword).

We would contend that Mr.May is talking through his hatwhen he makes the outrageousstatement that there has neverbeen a record made showing thetrue value of jazz.

This reduces thewhole thing to thelevel of farce, as itwould, appear fromthis that the vastmajority of jazz -lovers both in theUSA and in GreatBritain have beensuffering under adelusion, listeningonly to second-ratejazz on records, someof which accordingto the critics Mr.May so admires, aremasterpieces.

It is somewhatstrange, therefore,that names such asBeiderbecke andJelly Roll have con-tinued to live ; nodoubt Mr. May'shumble ears haveheard them, too, andconsider their recordsmediocre.

'Raw Deal'IAM

far from being an experton music of any kind, so I

will not argue on the merits ofthe BBC Show Band, althoughI thought they played the epi-tome of good music for theeveryman.

However, my sphere is thatof comedy-the element that isso evidently lacking in theshow for how can it be calleda " Show " without a propershare of comedy ?

I have seen Mr. Stennett per-form several times prior to hisappointment as residentcomedian, and I think he hasbeen dealt a raw deal. Rightoff the bottom. He is a fineartist who can draw a laughfrom reading a telephone book.He has a large repertoire ofjokes and voices and hasalready given evidence on theair of being a better -than -average impressionist.

Regarding the critics (count-less, and whose knowledgeleaves so little to be desired)we would like to say in thewords of Oscar Wilde " Oneshould, of course, have no preju-dices, but it is one's business insuch matters to have prefer-ences, and when one has prefer-ences one ceases to be fair."

We still do not revoke ouropinion that the handful ofAmerican musicians playingtrue jazz are equalled by Britishmusicians playing in a similaridiom.

Why, then, does producerJohnnie Stewart tie him downto one three -minute spot thatmust include a song ? He isbilled as a comedian, and assuch can be first-rate. But theBBC are trying to make asecond-rate musician out ofhim.

He was chosen, so I am in-formed, because he is a musi-cian with a turn for comedy,instead of the usual comedianwith a turn for music. Whata load of rot ! This view of himwas based on the fact that heaccompanies himself on theguitar, and that as a trumpeterhe comes into the same classas Harry James' six -year -oldson ! Of course, he has a sing-ing voice, but not one thatwould cause much worry to LeeLawrence, or any of the othersingers in the programme.

Jle is first and foremost acomedian, and I hope someonewill tell that to JohnnieStewart or Jim Davidson, orwhoever else it is that is bog-ging him down to such materialthat must leave him wide opento the kind of criticism he re-ceived in your columns lastweek.

Give Stan Stennett the free-dom and scope to choose hisown type of material and I'msure that we will have bettercomedy and as a result, a bet-ter show.

Cotton or Roy ?THE Comedy of Cotton ?

Radio reviewer JackBentley in his summing-up ofthe BBC Show Band's threeinitial broadcasts last week,gives the highest examples ofthe top name bands' character-istics in quoting " The pre-cision of Heath. The polish ofGeraldo. The beat of Parnell.The efficiency of Black. Theappeal of Ambrose. The popu-larity of Stapleton the first."

But surely he has given littlethought in including in such alist the "comedy of Cotton " ?I would have said at once, the" comedy of Roy."

I seldom miss the Sundaylunch-time radio band spot, andfeel I must remind Mr. Bentleyof the splendid band bothmusically and entertaininglythat Harry Roy has been fea-turing each week duringCotton's recent three months'rest from this spot.

TTERSAlthough only one comedy

number was included eachweek, items such as " The SheikOf Araby," " He Played HisClarinet as the Ship WentDown," " Music, Maestro,Please" to mention only three,were brilliantly put over andextremely funny indeed, unlikethe noisy shouting and so-calledhumour of the Cotton Band,which seems to hold sway inalmost every number in thisband's performance.

To sum up, I fail to see anycomparison between the slick,

polished, well-timed comedyof the comedy numbers of theRoy Band and the extended, butnot funny, humour of Cotton.

I would therefore say " TheComedy of Roy " and may add,here's looking forward to theHarry Roy Band's return tothis radio spot which theyfilled so well in what is sup-posed to be a " suit all ages "variety band show offering.

KoreaHERE we go again ! Someone

always mentions lack ofentertainment for troops, andI have to write my " bug -letter."

When the Korean fightingfirst started, and we and ourgallant allies rushed to the de-fence of democracy, in adesire to entertain the poorhuman currency that was beingused in this political circus, Ioffered to go to Korea.

A columnist in one of theleading Sunday papers did anarticle about entertainers hav-ing cold feet where dangerspots were concerned. Thissparked us off.

At the time I was leading ajumping small group, whichwas well -received at Americanbases. We did one-night standsat big North-west ballroomsand stints in Variety. To showwe were genuine, and to putthe columnist and War Officeon the spot, we offered to go fora soldier's pay. We contactedour MP, wrote dozens of letters.but the War Office, when theydeigned to send us an unsignedreply, just didn't want to knowabout anything but top -linestars.

We haven't heard of the col-umnist since. Maybe he went toKorea.

TN the NME (October 3,-11- 1952) I saw a letter of appre-ciation in regard to JackBarnes and his Music, who playat the Ritz Ballroom, Wey-mouth,

While stationed at RAF,Radipole Lane, I had many op-portunities of visiting Wey-mouth and had been at theafdrementioned camp about amonth before I found Jack andthe boys.

I couldn't believe any greatmusic would be played out oftown without it coming to the

notice of either of our leadingmusical papers, so I thoughtthat Weymouth, as far as jazzand I were concerned, wasdead, until I finally went to theRitz. After that, I was downthere two or three times a week.I hope the boys remember me,as we had a few good timesdown there !

If I remember rightly, RonniePipe did a lot of arranging be-tween tunes for them. A goodpianist and very modern. So,maybe they were some of hisold arrangements Brian Glad -well was listening to. I wonderif Ron is still there, because Ihave seen a Ron Pipe (piano)in the Nat Allen line-up - Ithink it is !

The tenor BG raves aboutalso plays a very De Franco-ishclarinet. That is if it is thesame guy !

LATEST news from the Palladium concerns thereplacement for star drummer George Fierstone,

due to leave in the near future.Les Lambert, the band's manager, tells me he

has signed up Len Johnson, who has, for severalyears, done an excellent job with Stanley Black'sBBC outfit, and that he will be starting in aboutsix weeks' time.

MET U.S. trumpet man Howard Roberts, overhere in the " Porgy and Bess " show. Howard

was attending a rehearsal of the BBC Show Band,for whom he may be turning in an arrangement ortwo.

He is a further example that it is not necessaryto wear loud " clobber" or cut comic capers tosucceed in the world of jazz. This quietly dressedand softly spoken American, who has played leadtrumpet with the Lionel Hampton and LuckyMillinder Bands, takes his life and his music veryseriously.

He now specialises in writing for male voicechoir, and this should be quite interesting to ShowBand producer Johnny Stewart, I should imagine.

SEENhopping around the studios with a heavily

bandaged ankle, popular singer Diana Coup -land, who unfortunately slipped down just onestep and sprained her ankle, while in Cardiff.

Hard luck, Diana-hate to think how much cot-ton wool and bandage would be needed had youslipped down the whole flight!

WITH the start of the ice hockey season, popularStreatham team attract name jazzmen to their

league matcheS, which take place on Wednesdayevenings.

For their last home game I spotted saxmen BillGriffiths and Jack Goddard, bass Tim Bell, andtrombonists Ken Goldie and Jackie Armstrong. Theboys tell me it's great relaxation after a tough dayin the studios.

concerning well-known West End "fac-totum " came to light this week. Apparently

he had a very good bandleader friend who, withhis band, was comfortably installed in a swankWest End restaurant.

The two friends met, and during conversation the" factotum " offered his friend a more lucrativeengagement, stating he was in a position to arrangean audition. To this the unsuspecting bandleaderagreed, and in due course an audition wasarranged.

Whilst it was on, the " friendly factotum " visitedthe management of the restaurant where the audi-tioning band was currently appearing, told themthat their "golden boy" MD was at that verymoment auditioning for a rival concern, and offeredto replace the band with an equally good outfit forless money!

Fortunately, the trusting bandleader passed theaudition and landed the new contract ...

Mike Daniels, leader ofthe Delta Jazzmen, ishere seen with his 193141 -litre Invicta, whichhas six cylinders andtwelve sparking plugsin all, as well as a crashgearbox and foot andhand throttles. Mikedescribes the top speedas 100 plus, with a cruis-

speed of 85 mph. He is scared to workthe fuel consumption, but believes it to

be about 10 mpg.:

YET a further change in the trombone depart-ment of Lew Stone's Pigalle Restaurant Band.

Jack Irving, who only a few weeks ago replacedJimmy Wilson, finds that owing to his many earlymorning calls, the late hours of the Pigalle do notagree with him, and, consequently, he and Lewhave decided to part.

Adept as Lew is at finding suitable replacementsat short notice, he has already signed up West Endnotability George Rowe, who was with the Sky-rockets at the Palladium for several years.

Ti CAME upon Paul Carpenter (Jeff Arnold of"Riders of the Range ") at the wheel of the

most expensive -looking automobile I've seen forsome time.

Knowing Paul not to be the kind to splash thatkind of " loot " on a car, I asked him how come?M. C. definitely confirmed the auto to be his-infact it was a gift from an admirer !

Lucky Paul! Oh, to have that kind of personality!* * *

DURING a conversation with Les Maddox, vio-linist with the Stanley Black BBC outfit, we

discussed the band's coming break-up. I asked Leshis future plans, to which he replied that hecouldn't afford to be out of work for long as hehad a wife and two bookies to keep !

SECOND week in the life of the Show Band, andgeneral comments seem to indicate an upward

surge in the quality of the arrangements playedby the band. Could be the new recruits-BruceCampbell, Alan Bristowe, Eric Jupp and MalcolmLockyer-to the arranging staff have had somethingto do with it.

Last Saturday the Band was called for 6.30 p.m.,rehearsed fourteen new numbers and were on theair at 10.15 p.m. A tough assignment for a newban', I would say.

Latest "Ammy " : It has been noticed at theAmbrose broadcast rehearsals that Bert, whohas used drummer Micky Grieve on his sessionsfor some years, and knows his name as well ashis own, suddenly and persistently now refers toMicky as " Stewart." Strange ...

AS a relaxation and, presumably, to counteractthe more serious responsibilities of parenthood,

popular tenor star Tommy Whittle is studying tolearn the "Redowa."

Look it up in the dictionary-I had to!

FUNNY story this week concerns Mac Minshull,trombonist with Jack Parnell's Band, who re-

cently had the misfortune to lose his instrument.Mac filled in the usual form at the Lost Property

place, and where it said " description of shape ofmissing article," he filled in the word " weird."

Back came the form saying this was not an ade-quate description and would he please elaborate.Mac's sense of humour came to his rescue, and hereturned the form, filled in this time thus-"Atrombone -shaped trombone "!

GERALDO'S d rummer, Eric Delaney, is findinghis time very full right now, with the launching

of his drum school at his home. With Eric isCharlie Botterill, who teaches all tune percussion,and Maurice Throssell, handling drum transcrip-tions, which include some excellent Buddy Richsolos.

Charlie is a member of three American associa-tions-the National Association of RudimentalDrummers, All American Drummer Assn., and theInternational Association of Modern Drummers, ofwhich he has been a member since 1948.

* * *TACK HYLTON'S new show, which features the

Crazy Gang, moves off to Oxford on the 27th,for two weeks prior to returning to Victoria Palace.

WHEN Harry Letham left Sidney Lipton's Bandat Grosvenor House, Sidney cast around for a

replacement, and of all things has fixed Harry'syounger brother George, who is now a regularmember of the Grosvenor House brass section.

* * *CONGRATULATIONS to top drummer Jock

Cummings on his appointment as percussionistin the BBC Show Band.

This likeable personality will undoubtedly addto the already well star-studded outfit under CyrilStapleton.

BOUQUET to C anadian reed specialist Bob Burns,who, in the absence of Frank Reidy, stepped

into the Ambrose line-up last Friday evening.Bob handled the tenor, clarinet and bass clarinet

parts, and with minimum rehearsal time available,gave a faultless performance.

THE many friends of popular Skyrocket trom-bonist Jimmy Wilson will be sorry to hear that

he is now in All Saints Hospital, near WestminsterBridge, for observation of an internal complaint.

Jim has worked in name bands for some tenyears now, this being the first time he has beenunable to fulfil an engagement through ill -health,thought to have been brought on by strain ofexcess work-and, I suspect, too much golf!

Over the phone Jimmy told me he wasn't feel-ing too bad, and would be pleased to hear from.or to see, any friends in the business who care tolook him up at his present address, which I trusthe will not be using for very long.

Mystery Dept: Although billed in "Radio Times"last Wednesday to appear on Geraldo's Tip TopTunes, Jill Day made no vocal contribution to theprogramme. Instead listeners heard the ex-Geraldo singer Eve Boswell.

Strange that Gerry made no reference to thischange in vocalists at all-particularly as,'aelieve, Jill was not indisposed.

of teeth of today's vocalcontortionists, you will finda boy who does none ofthese things, yet has man-aged to make more of adent in the " best selling "and " most played " listen-ings than anyone else thisyear.

Currently riding high in hisown country with " Wish YouWere Here " and " Outside OfHeaven " Eddie Fisher also hasa British hit on his hands inthe shape of " Lady Of Spain "(probably partly inspired bythe current visit to the Statesof the composer, TolchardEvans). All three of themfigure in this week's U.S. hit -charts.

Both in this country and overthere, " I'm Yours," " Trust InMe," " Forgive Me," " Tell MeWhy " and " Anytime " are stillfresh in the public memory. Inbrief, Billboard Magazine's" Best New Singer Of 1950 " hasbecome Victor Records' mostvaluable property in 1952.

Cantor FindTwenty-two year old Eddie

skyrocketed into prominenceunder the sponsorship of EddieCantor, the veteran comedian,who heard him at a night cluband immediately asked him tojoin his troupe.

He had formerly used hisvoice shouting the wares ofFisher Snr.'s vegetable truck

through the streets of Phila-delphia, but even before that,'while still at school, Eddie wassinging for local radio stations.He had, in fact, four regularairshots a week which nettedhim a total of-£.5 !

Moving back through severalmore years, we'find a 7 -year -oldEddie Fisher winning amateurcontests. At that age he hadthe singular distinction ofcoming first in one competitionagainst the combined attrac-tions of twelve girls. " rthink I

A SOLDIERWITH A

SONGThe story of Eddie Fisher,

the khaki -clad lad with

'Cheit-Beater'Nevertheless, Eddie's victories

continued as time went by,until an important one reallygot him started on his climb upthe ladder of fame. This was onArthur Godfrey's vastly popu-lar Talent Scouts radio pro-gramme, and from here it wasa short step to the vocal spot

with Charlie Ventura's Band.At the age of eighteen, Eddie

auditioned for a solo spot atthe world -lamed CopacabanaClub, and was accepted. On hisopening night he walked out ofthe Copa after the first show,blithely forgetting that therewas a second performance tofollow two hours later.

A sudden mental click lefthim panic-stricken, but throughthe audacity of a recklesscabby he was able to get backjust in time for his number.

After that, he realised thatthere was a lot of sense in hav-ing a personal Manager. . . .

The first Fisher recordings onVictor (HMV for most of theworld) did not cause much ofa stir, but after a year withthe company his version of" Thinking Of You " reallycaught on.

Next came " Unless " and" You Love Me," and it wasobvious that the clear -voicedtenor was not just a flash in thepan, from the phonographicpoint of view at least.

Not that the critics have beenunanimous in their praise." Metronome's " George T.Simon has frequently depre-cated Eddie's " chest -beatingnoises " and his colleague, BarryUlanov, is equally distressed bythe singer's apparent inabilityto hit every note right on thenose.

Call -UpOn the other hand, Marie

Mesmer of the " Los AngelesDaily News " enthuses thatFisher has a terrific voice. Infact, it is surprising how muchvoice comes out of this slightlybuilt, boyish -looking singer. Hesings with a maturity quite be-yond his years.

So where are we?During 1951, Eddie's meteoric

rise to the top was slightlyslowed down with his call pupfor compulsory GI service. But" slightly " is the operativeword, for it is the shellac hehas cut while on leave that isstrengthening his pull evermore as the months go by.

A MODERN METHOD FORSAX -PLAYERS

" The Saxophone . . . a ModernMethod," by Don Barrigo

(Lafleur)T ET me say, at the first, that'this is a beautifully producedbook. No expense has beenspared in the making; thequality of paper and printiois excellent, the layout v -ffygood, and the fingering chart(size 22 in. by 34 in.) is madeup of first-class photos of theinstrument.

Don Barrigo is a tenor saxplayer of fine repute and ofmany years' experience in top-flight dance bands. In spite ofhis exotic -sounding name, he isEnglish, and served with theBritish Army during the War.

UP-TO-DATEIn 1947, I think it was, he

emigrated to South Africa, andfor this reason, his name maynot be familiar to the youngergeneration of musicians.

However, the student may beassured that Don's outlook was,and is, up to date and progress-sive.

This book is so comprehensiveand detailed that I feel it musthave taken many months (per-haps years) to write and toedit.

SMALL POINTSThe only criticisms I have to

make are very small ones, inview of the all-round excellenceof this tutor :-(1) Under " Embouchure " it is

stated that the upper teeth .should rest about an inchfrom the tip. I find that onthe alto, this distance isnearer a half an inch. Donmay have been thinking aboutthe tenor mouthpiece whenhe was writing.

(2) I think his instructionsabout vibrato might havebeen inserted later on in thebook. Personally I teachstudents to blow with straight" no-vib " tone until they arefairly proficient, but Donexpects them to play withvibrato early on (he mentionsthis in the 7th Study). Thereader will understand thatthis is a personal preferenceon my part.

Another Man's Lumber " ;being the other man, of course-that down at heel, underfedmusical boffin, The Arranger.

If you are unfortunate enoughto feel an unhealthy urge to joinour carefree and happy-go-lucky throng, may I offer you afew tips before you score yourfirst and most importantarrangement for a professionalband ?

To begin, I know you havethe most wonderful ideas in theworld-tone colours nobody hasever thought of before-voicingsthat are the last word inmodernity - weird harmoniesthat would send Arnold Baxback to the nursery, etc., etc.

Well, scrap the lot !Remember that to impress a

bandleader with your first score(he's probably dubious aboutyour abilities, anyway) youmust write something that willsound good after it has beenrehearsed for five minutes at themost.

During a busy three-hour re-hearsal he won't indulge any-body with a strange face longer

than that. In fact, if thearrangement doesn't sound justwonderful after the secondplaying he'll probably murmursomething about " Kenton " andreturn your effort withoutthanks.

Your keynote at the beginningis simplicity-and this is noth-ing to be ashamed of, I canassure you!

Write firm " clear " harmonies,and give the players somethingthat they can get their teethinto ; for instance, if you writea section for the saxophones.make it at least eight bars andkeep the voicing consistent -don't try mixing unusual com-binations of instruments justyet. If there is a modulation,make it clear cut, and to thepoint. Don't ramble.

Remember that your primeobject is to be allowed to con-tinue writing for the band, soyou must gain everyone's con-fidence at the beginning.

And how do you please thebandleader, the musicians, thevocalist and the BBC producer,all at the same time ?

" I'll Remember April " startsin as a Beguine, and soon de-velops into a jump. After theneat first chorus of the melody,Powell only needs to play a fewbars to make one realise thathe is the greatest single -finger -style modern pianist aroundtoday.

His harmonic knowledge isnot as profound as, say, Elling-bon or Garner, but his percus-sive and rhythmic " feel" and" know how " are beyond criti-cism. He is a right-handedpianist, meaning that all hisimprovisation is strictly fromhis right-hand - the left ismerely an anchor, used foroccasional stab chords or punc-tuations-but what a right-hand he possesses!

The final two bars of this sideconsist of a semiquaver run,rapped out with machine-gunprecision.

" I Should Care " has someGarner-ish piano work, octavestuff, and full chordal right-hand work. Highlight of this isthe coda, with the bass player'sfigures bringing out the fullmeaning of the chord pro-gressions.

Next comes Gershwin's "NiceWork If You Can Get It." Thisis too fast for comfort, and inthe four choruses Powell trotsout, his technique is not tooclean, but nevertheless, somegood stuff emerges.

" Off Minor " is a weird one,typical of its composer, Thelo-nious Monk. Powell is fine here,and really gets carried away-you can hear him grunting inagony as his fertile mindsearches, and finds, one goodidea after another. This endsside one.

" Somebody Loves Me " has agood first chorus in block style,also, later on, plenty of doubletempo runs, and the effectiveuse of thirds, by the pianist.

" Bud's Bubble " comes next,up tempo. This one goes to MaxRoach for his out -of -this -worlddrum breaks-amazing stuff byan amazing drummer.

A lovely ballad follows," Everything Happens To Me."Here Powell brings his latentleft-hand into action, in somedescending chord passages, andthe coda stems straight fromDebussy !

Finally comes " Indiana,"which is taken at breakneck

speed. This is the best Powellof the bunch, and he is sure -fingered and inspired all theway.

Through the whole eightnumbers the drumming of MaxRoach (all brushes, by theway !) and the bass work ofCurley Russell is really superb,and they back up the pianistlike heroes.

As for Powell, he does a fan-tastic job here, and all hisgenius is confined to a compassof two to three octaves; the

middle. If the keyboard is hisimprovising focal point.

Bud's piano playing doesn'tmake for happy music; there isa sad strain running througheverything he does-the sad-ness of a genius who is strivingwith an urgency which compelsyou to listen to him.

You must hear these sides,for he has put down on wax hisvery soul. . . . I can't stopraving !

You can keep your commer-cial music, for while there aremusicians like Powell, there isalways the hope that modernjazz will one day make thegrade and earn the place in thesun it so rightfully deserves.

" Santa Lucia " is the result,and if ever a musician soundedunhappy, Musso is that man.The side starts in as a waltz,

with the solo tenor sharp as anacid drop, and as wobbly as afugitive from Lombardoland.

The arrangement goes into ajump tempo, and finally the siderides out in double tempo, withMusso emulating the " oozlam "bird, by diving head first in aflurry of white smoke into thebell of his own tenor.

A stinker, this side ! But holdon-would you believe it?-theother side finds the Kentonitesturning in as neat and tastefulpiece of work as you could wishfor.

Tune's a nostalgic slow, andfeatures Stan's chordal piano,some top-flight a 1 t o (ArtPepper?) and first-rate sectionwork from brass and saxes,

So there we are. One sidesmells to high heaven, the otheris a fine musicianly job. Whatan enigma this man Kenton is !

States. We haven't got the bands." With theseWords, US bandleader Cab Calloway-now in London asa star of " Porgy and Bess "-expressed his opinion of the14th{ Annual, Jazz Jamboree which packed the vastGaumont State, Kilburn, last Sunday (October 12).

The NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS invited Cab along as our guestto the Jamboree, and with him came ex -Lionel Hampton andLucky Millinder trumpet -star, Howard Roberts, who is alsoappearing in "Porgy and Bess".

These two Americans, hardened as they are through years andyears of dance band experience in the States, were amazed atthe standard of performanceand the qualities of showman-ship displayed by ten ofBritain's leading bands givingtheir services in aid of musi-cians' charities.

They enjoyed every minute ofthe three-hour show, and so didthe audience of 4.000 - forit was one of the best Jam-borees ever put on, and it wascertainly the most good-humoured and entertainingevent in the long series, of thesegreat occasions.

LaughterAs the audience were taking

their seats, we received our firstindication of the style of showthat we were going to see, whenDr. Crock and his Crackpotsmarched down the aisle in hila-rious procession. On the stage,they proceeded to put on a high-powered laughter show that leftthe audience limp

Everything happened. Mem-bers of the crazy aggregationmarched through the audience ;others went through ridiculousroutines ; pandemonium reigned

and yet throughout, Dr Crock(Harry Hines) manfully playedhis clarinet and the band blewtheir own version of Poet andPeasant."

Full marks to the genius whothought of starting the Jam-boree on this bright note. Usu-ally, we have had an overtureby an enormous string -spangledtheatre -type of orchestra, butDr Crock set the pattern forwhat was to follow, and, insteadof bands taking themselvesover -seriously, good humourand relaxed entertainment be-came the keynote of the subse-quent proceedings.

After Dr Crock came CarlBarriteau, full of personality, asusual, and still as fluent as everon clarinet and alto. Cab Callo-way thought the band " veryclean " and his comment on Carlwas: "He can blow!"

He and Howard were im-pressed by Derek Price's drum-ming (especially his use of thefoot -pedal) and Geoff Alderson'stenor sax. Mae Cooper sangwith the band, which put on alively show.

The compering was per-formed by " Professor " JimmyEdwards, in cap and gown; whogave a musicianly touch to hishumour and had the audienceon his side from the word "go."He was great. He never talkedtoo much or monopolised the

The small bands were accom-modated, as usual, in the or-chestra -pit, and the first groupto rise from the depths was theJimmy Walker Quintet. It hadn'tbeen playing more than a fewbars of " Cherokee " before CabCalloway was leaning forwardin his seat with keen intentness.

He and Howard exchangedeulogistic comments about thearrangements, the playing and- particularly - the accordion(Roy Herbert) and the bass(Arthur Watts).

Praise for WalkerJimmy himself played

soprano, alto and tenor withassurance and inventiveness,and the group's four numbersproduced these comments fromCab-" This is the first time I'veever heard an accordion I reallyliked " and " That bass man ismad ; he's solid ! "

Our guests, in common withthe rest of the audience, gavethe band a great ovation andagreed that it was modern, sub-dued and musically intelligent.

Jimmy's stage -presence was apleasant surprise, for he did notbat an eyelid when his tenor -sling broke or when the plat-form refused to carry him outof sight after the last number.His sangfr ,id earned h i manother ovation.

From modern we came to tra-ditional with Humphrey Lyttel-ton and his Band, whom I haveheard play much better on other

audience joined) ; a WallyFawkes' original " ClosingTime " and " Travelling Blues."Humph's playing went downquite well with Howard Roberts,but neither of our co -critics wasover -impressed.

However, their enthusiasmwelled up again with the emer-gence of the Ray EllingtonQuartet - immaculate and asfull of personality -plus as ever.Ray very nicely introducedHoward and Cab to the audi-ence, and the crowd gave thema tremendous reception,

Superb ParnellRay's first number was an im-

personation of Johnnie Raysinging " Cry " which-if I mayvery respectfully say so-mighthave been supplanted by somemore suitable number. It wasfunny enough, but unoriginalfor Ray, who usually sets sucha high standard of originality.

However, the group madeamends with an instrumental" Make No Mistake " and withthe Fats Waller medley that fol-lowed. Flawless, superbly -rehearsed playing and comedyhad the fans by the ears.

Last turn in the first half hadCab Calloway shaking his headadmiringly and muttering :" That's it! " And it was it. tooin the person of Jack Parnelland his Music Makers.

What a band this is ! Bub-bling over with youth, person-ality, zest and exuberance, themusic they roared out wasquite breathtaking.

Their first number " Cather-ine Wheel " was a showpiece forthe whole orchestra, and roused

the audience to a pitch of ex-citement that had not so farbeen reached even in this en-thusiastic Jamboree.

I felt that the trumpets weremore wild than polished, andthat Derek Humble's alto -play-ing sounded a little anaemic forso fierce a band, but the generaleffect was staggeringly good.

Jack then gave a concessionto the fans who like his voiceand sang " Meet Me On TheCorner." The applause sug-gested that most of the audiencewould gladly have met himthere any time he said-butrather for his appearance thanhis voice, I would have thought.

As a surprise, he introducedthe Skylarks, the vocal groupwho are accompanying BettyHutton at the London Palla-dium. What they may lack inoutstanding vocal technique,they make up for in fascinat-ingly original presentationwhich turns their numbers intovocals -plus -mime -plus -ballet.

It was particularly effectivein " St. Louis Blues," but theirGeorge Mitchellish unaccom-panied version of "Danny Boy"was quite unsuitable for theoccasion ; didn't somebody tellthem ?

It was a great gesture ontheir part to come along togive their services to Britishmusicians' charities, but threenumbers taken off Jack Par-nell's stint was rather too greata slab out of this great band'srestricted ration,

Double DrummingThe band went out with "The

Champ", in which Ronnie Scott, raised the roof with his tenor -playing and spurred the bandon to even greater efforts underthe influence of his drivingplaying. He was the first indi-vidualist to get spontaneousapplause for a solo-and howhe deserved it!

"The Champ" worked up tothe terrific climax that is soidentified with the Parnell pre-sentation-the "four -hands -that -beat -as -two" Parnell and PhilSeaman drum -duet.

The simultaneous stickworkof the two side -by -side drum-mers gave the impression thatwe were watching one drum-mer reflected in a mirror,and Cab and Howard werecarried away by the stunt.

They freely admitted theyhad never seen anything like it,and were vociferous in theirpraise of "a great band" as thecurtains closed. Cab, in fact,was shouting like a real fan.

There was no time for anydiscussion during the interval,for the whole period was takenup in signing autographs for thehost of fans who descended onCab and Howard and buried

With characteristic Americangeniality, Cab and Howardobliged until their arms ached-without a word of reproach andwithout missing anyone out.

First band up after the inter-val was the Freddy Randallgroup, a very bright and virilebunch that kicked off with"Basin Street Blues". Howardwas at once impressed withFreddy's own fluent playing,which he said was so full offeeling.

Although Freddy Randall isone of the most highly -strungof top -line players and goesthrough nervous agonies beforehe does a show, his playinggave no sign of strain or ten-sion, and the drive that his littlegroup generated had the wholeplace rocking.

Particularly interesting werethe passages between Freddyand his trombone -player, Nor-man Cave, which held the realessence of good - humouredDixieland playing.

6Hot' Euphonium !The " Original Dixieland One -

Step" and " The Sheik "whipped enthusiasm up to aterrific heat, but the greatmoment in the band's show waswhen Jimmy Edwards marched

on with his euphonium and pro-ceeded to join the boys in atearaway version of " TigerRag."

berry and his New Orchestra,making its debut in these ex-alted circles. It is perhaps un-fortunate that Arthur tried toohard to make a show; had hebeen content to play arrange-ments more in character withthe type of work he usuallyperforms, and with the technicalresources of his musicians, hewould have done much better.

As it was, he played a seriesof over -elaborate arrangementsthat lacked drive and interest.The over-all effect was one ofplodding dullness-which is agreat pity, because Rowberry's

Band can do much better thanthis, when it " does what comesnaturally."

A surprise that might havecome off but didn't was the in-troduction of vocalist TonyBrent to sing a couple of num-bers with the band. As readerswill know, our critics have thehighest regard for this singer,and, in a proper setting, hemight have implemented hisrecording reputation in no un-certain manner.

But what happened? He cameon to sing two numbers cold,with the accompaniment ofpiano and drums. In his firstnumber, "Please Don't SayNo," the pianist achieved theamazing performance of beingtwo bars ahead of the singerthroughout, and, in " WalkingTo Missouri." poor Tony triedto walk while the pianist ranabout uncontrollably in differ-ent directions!

Why no rehearsal, boys? Itwas a most embarrassing wasteof good material.

Incidentally, Arthur, CabCalloway made the suggestionthat, if instead of your five -saxes -three -trumpets -one trom-bone line-up, you dropped onesax and added another trom-bone, you would get a morebalanced sound.

Next on came the JohnnyDankworth Seven-who werein sparkling form, and earnedthe highest tribute from Cabwho roared " These cats aregone, boy-I'm telling you . .

gone!"

Modern PolishAnd they were gone, too;

they blew and banged withthat modern polish that neverpalls and that brilliant musici-anship that illuminated everyphrase they played.

The Seven never seem to haveheard of wrong notes, andHoward Roberts was particu-larly impressed by the way theyworked around the chords, eachpne of them following everychange with effortless tech-nique and a never -failing storeof ideas.

Cleo Laine sang " StormyWeather " with the group, andseemed to be inspired by theoccasion to rise to new heights.Our guests definitely put hertops in the Jamboree vocal de-partment. They liked FrankHolder, too, whose "Lady BeGood " smacked more thansomewhat of Cab himself.

Now, I don't know if I havemanaged to get over to you inthis review any idea of themounting enthusiasm that per-vaded the Jamboree as eachband came on and did its stuff.Everything was great, and itseemed that there just couldn'tbe anything better than what

BOREwe had already seen. . . . Andthen came Ted Heath and hisMusic.

What he pulled out of the bagwill go down in Jamboree his-tory.

Immaculate HeathThe curtain rose on a band

that looked immaculate inspotless uniforms, with Tedhimself slimmer and jauntierthan we have ever seen him.He announced a special medleycalled " Jamboree Days," whichpaid tribute to great playersassociated with the Jamboreeeither directly or indirectly.

Denis Lotis came on to ex-plain the idea in specially -written words and music, andsmoothly the arrangement ledin to Bobby Pratt playingBunny Berigan's " I Can't GetStarted."

Well, I've heard some play-ing in my time but what youngBobby put into his chorus willtake some beating.

While we were still reelingfrom the impact of this out -of -this -world solo, Dickle Valen-tine bounced on to electrify uswith his impression of BillyDaniels singing " That Old BlackMagic " followed by glamorousLita Roza singing "Ain't Mis-behavin' ", leading up to Tedhimself picking up his trom-bone and forming a five -mantrombone section for an immacu-late and breath -taking perfor-mance of the Glenn Miller ar-rangement of " Bugle Call Rag."

What precision! What musici-anship! What showmanship!

Then Ted announced " a littlething that Ronnie Verrall, RalphDollimore, and yours trulyhave cooked up. We call it' Rhapsody For Drums '." So wesettled back to hear some moreskin -pounding, but what a dif-ference in the Heath concep-tion of a drum -speciality !

Ronnie Verrall went into adrum solo, and suddenly everyother member of the orchestrahad taken up a small, deeptom-tom and a drumstick hid-den behind their music -stands.Each section inaugurated a

beat on its own, so that ulti-mately all the sections werebanging away intricate cross -rhythms while, above it all,Ronnie gave out with his ownsolo.

Section by section, the drumswere put away and exchangedfor instruments and the num-ber ended in pandemonium-from the audience, that is: notthe players who, beautifullydrilled, and magnificent in everysense, had put on a show thatwound up the Jamboree in averitable blaze of glory.

The best compliment that canbe paid the Heath performanceis to quote Cab Calloway. Hesaid:

" I have never heard a bandwith such precision since thegreat Glenn (Miller Band. I'dgo so far as to sav that, onthis performance, Heath hasone of the best bands in theworld, and he'd c'ean up ifhe came to the States. I'mgoing to write and tell themover there what I heard to-day; it'll shake them up."Well, that's the story of the

Jamb-ree--a great day that re-flects the highest possible crediton those competing and on theMusicians' Social and Benevo-lent Council, who organised theshow.

£2,000 MadeSpecial tribute should be paid

to Pat Dodd (who acted asstage -manager on behalf of theCouncil), and had the valuableback -stage help of CharlesBohm, Dennis Neale, HymieCohen and Jim Higgins.

Chief stewards in charge ofthe seating were Ted Ansteyand Len Hunt; and Joe Nuss-baum ant Bob Lamont didvaluable backstage financialwork. Last but not least, aspecial word for secretaryAlfred H. Morgan, who had allthe headaches.

The hard work of the Coun-cil is rewarded by the news that,as a result of the packed JazzJamboree, no less than £2,000will be handed over to 'he main-tenance of the Musicians'Union Benevolent Funds.-R.S.

Bouquets!WE HAVE enjoyed a most illuminating

week-end-one that has made us feel ex-ceedingly proud of our home-grown dancebands and dance musicians. As you willread elsewhere in this issue, we tookHoward Roberts and Cab Calloway alongto the Jazz Jamboree, and watched theirreactions to this showcase of British dancemusic. They were so delighted with whatthey saw that they wanted more, so in theevening we took them to Ted Heath'sSwing Session at the London Palladium,where we watched them applauding withthe enjoyment of youngsters.

WHAT WAS their reaction ? One ofpleasure-but also one of amazement. Bothof them are experienced in the world ofdance music, but they freely confessed thatthey had no idea that they would comeacross such brilliant dance bands and suchmusicianship in Britain.

IN EFFECT, they said that the Americanentertainment profession has the firm ideathat the British are staid and lagging farbehind in the sphere of music. But whatis the real truth ? They come over hereexpecting to suffer in an arid musicaldesert and they find a crop that astoundsthem.

" WHY DON'T you make more noise aboutyour bands ? " asked Cab Calloway. " Whydon't you tell everybody how good theyare ? Ted Heath's Band would be a sen-sation in the States, given good exploita-tion stack of records to be pushedout over the networks there in advance.They'd be a riot. So would DickieValentine."

TALKING ABOUT the Jamboree, he said heand Howard were absolutely amazed atthe arrangements used by the bands. " Inthe States," he explained, " it's only thetop name bands who could have scores likethat. They're the only ones who can affordthe high-priced writers of such material.The less famous groups (and they are inthe majority) have to make do witharrangements that aren't in the same streetas the stuff your writers are turning outhere."

SUMMING UP, they both declared they weredelighted and amazed at our standard ofplaying, our ideas, our presentation and ourknowledge of and feeling for every type ofdance music and jazz.

IT'S ENOUGH to make the profession feelvery proud of itself, and we're very gladindeed to have the opportunity of convey-ing to the profession the spontaneous andsincere plaudits of so distinguished acouple of visitors to our shores.

IT IS certainly time that our musicians ridthemselves of their inferiority complex, andrealised that they have plenty to shoutabout. Take a look at our New York cor-respondent's interim report on this pageabout the " Metronome " Poll. Britishmusicians figure prominently among thevoting. It makes you feel proud, doesn't it?

KILLED A COW-AND LOST

TRAVELLING through thenight last Saturday to

compete in the All -BritainFinals at Belle Vue, Manches-ter, Fred Hedley and his Bandwere involved in what mighthave been a more serious acci-dent.

The coach in which they weretravelling struck a herd of cowsduring thick fog, and, afterskidding right across the roadand almost overturningfinished up by missing a tele-graph pole by inches. A cowwas killed, and Hedley himselfcomplained of an injury to hisback.

Despite the unfortunate jour-ney, the boys competed in theafternoon without any sleepand finished fourth. The Quin-tet, of Wolverhampton, werefirst, with Portsmouth's JohnnyLyne Orchestra, second, andRaymond and his Orchestra, ofSutton Coldfield. third.

Cave leavesRandall for GoldNORMAN CAVE who has

been with Freddy Randalland his Band on and off forabout three years, both on pianoand trombone, has come to anamicable agreement withFreddy Randall, and is leavingthe band.

Both are reluctant to partcompany, but Norman wants ajob with more scope for hisarranging capabilities - ofwhich Freddy speaks veryhighly - plus more readingwork.

Not wanting to leave the Dixiefield entirely, Norman hasaccepted a position with HarryGold, to take the place of TedDarrah,

Speaking to the NME thisweek, Jack Parnell said : " Joeis, in my opinion, a fine tenorman who will fit in to my bandvery well. Who is replacingHarry Klein? Well, I can'tname him today, but his signingwill be a big surprise."

Who is this mysterious per-son? Well, the NME's guess isthat he is not generally knownis a baritone player - but hasalready become famous as astyle -setting musician.

EDMUNDO ROS LEAVINGBAGATELLE AFTER 10 YEARS

ALONG and famous association between bandleaderand restaurant comes to an end at the beginning of

next month, when Edmundo Ros leaves the Bagatelle,Mayfair Place, W, at the expiration of his present con-tract on November 1.

Edmundo started at theBagatelle on March 16, 1942.and told the NME this week:" In my ten years there, I haveenjoyed the best possible runthat any bandleader could wishfor, I have been very success-ful and very lucky, and I lovethe place. But now circumstan-ces have forced me to ask themto release me from my contractwhen it expires."

The reason, he went on toexplain, is that he proposes todevote all his energies to theCocoanut Grove, Regent Street,W., of which he is the owner.

In a statement to the NME,Howell said : " It was neverintended that I should conductthe orchestra, but it was onlyrecently decided that WoolfPhi:lips should do so. However,[ would like to emphasise thatit is my orchestra, selected byme."

TWO changes in the " Squad-ronaires" brass section fol-

lowed close on the band's re-turn from its recent tour ofIreland. Ex -Stapleton trombon-ist Charlie Messenger replacedJack Botterill, and CharlieRowlands, trumpeter from the" Blue Rockets," replaced TerryLewis.

Both changes took effect atthe beginning of this week whenthe "Squads " recommencedtheir one-nighters and broad-casting dates.

British Musicians TakingHonours in kmerican Poll

DEFINITE indications that British bands and artistsare at last getting a break in the States came this

week with a report from NME New York correspondentBill Coss that at the mid-wav stage in the " Metronome "Poll vote -counting, five British stars are figuringprominently in their respective sections.

Blind pianist -leader GeorgeShearing is topping the smallgroup and pianist sections;singer Alan Dean looks likebeing among the first ten malevocalists this year; Ronnie Balland Johnny Dankworth havereceived several votes apiece

in the piano and alto groupings,and Ted Heath's name figures inthe big band division.

Shearing and Dean are, ofcourse, currently working inthe States and have been heardin person by the American publie generally; Ronnie Ball wen

over there more recently, buthis appearance in the Pollwould seem to indicate that heis already making his presencefelt.

The success of Ted Heath'sexcellent recordings for Decca'sLondon label is reflected in thislatest news of his popularityacross the Atlantic. Regularreaders of " Metronome " and" Downbeat " will already knowof the customary high ratingsHeath discs get from thesemagazines' reviewers.

The presence in the listings

of Johnny Dankworth mustlargely be due to the playing ofhis records over disc -jockeyshows, as although Esquirehave made arrangements withthe Mercury label for someDankworth LP's to be issuedthere, Esquire executive CarloKrahmer doesn't know whetherthe discs are yet on sale to theAmerican public.

Sid Gross, New York's Britishdisc -jockey, is known to featureJohnny's recordings wheneverhe can, and Leonard Featheralso plugs the British alto star.

ing star Lita Roza, who, asexclusively reported in ourcolumns last week, paid a fly-ing visit to Holland to broad-cast over Radio Avro, foundherself feted by officials of theDecca record company there onher arrival at the airport.

But the bouquets and wel-come -to -Holland speeches wereonly a sample of the adulationwhich was to follow.

After a hectic day's rehear-sal with the Avro studio orches-tra under Jos Cleber, and theshow which followed, Lita re-ceived a phone call from theDutch War Ministry asking herif she could be so kind as tosupply pin-up pictures for themany Dutch soldiers in hos-pital who had been unable toget to the show but had heardthe broadcast.

Similar requests were alsoreceived from several civilianhospitals.

Lita arrived back in thiscountry by air on Wednesday-minus almost her entire stockof photographs, but richer byseveral thousand new-foundfriends

I Francis. who has been withthe Geraldo Orchestra for two -and -a -half years, left the grouplast Sunday (12th) to free-lance.

Following his 250 BBC air-ings, his numerous recordingsand Luxembourg dates, it isnot surprising that Derrick hasalready received several offers.However, the NME learns thatDerrick has placed his futurerepresentation in the hands ofagent Harry Dawson, joiningsingers Harry Dawson andDiana Coupland under theDawson agency wing.

Among Derrick's first dateswill be a solo airing in " Ren-dezvous," which is recorded onOctober 21 for transmission onNovember 11.

DESPITE the fact that (as exclusively forecast in theNME) the Stanley Black Orchestra's 81 -year -old

BBC contract expires on January 3, listeners will still beable to hear the band on the air five times each week.

After the expiration of thecontract, the group will con-tinue to be used to accompanytwo radio shows, each with arepeat broadcast, and will playone dance music spot each week.These engagements will be onthe same basis as that onwhich any other big band isbooked for radio.

ONE-NIGHTERS" I shall be doing one-night

stands each week. on Thursdays,Fridays and Saturdays," Stanleytold the NME. " The Saturdaybookings will have to be near'town, as we shall be recordingone radio show on Saturdaymornings and doing the otheron Sundays.

I have already fixed one-nighters in such widely separa-ted places as Hammersmith.Grimsby. Southsea. Cardiff andHarrogate.

" I shall be using strings formy radio appearances," Stanleycontinued, " and also for a TVseries which I hope to be doingsometime in the New Year.

LINE-UP" There is one point which I'd

like to make quite clear to yourreaders and to prospectivebookers; the band which I shalluse on one-night engagementswill be identical with that usedfor radio work-minus thestrings, of course.

" The personnel will be verysimilar to that of my presentorchestra, though there are, ofcourse, bound to be a fewchanges.

" The basic line-up," he went

on, " will be five saxes, sixbrass and three rhythm; vocal-ists will be Diana Coupland andTohnny Eager, and possiblyanother male singer as well."

Bouquets!WE HAVE enjoyed a most illuminating

week-end-one that has made us feel ex-ceedingly proud of our home-grown dancebands and dance musicians. As you willread elsewhere in this issue, we tookHoward Roberts and Cab Calloway alongto the Jazz Jamboree, and watched theirreactions to this showcase of British dancemusic. They were so delighted with whatthey saw that they wanted more, so in theevening we took them to Ted Heath'sSwing Session at the London Palladium,where we watched them applauding withthe enjoyment of youngsters.

WHAT WAS their reaction ? One ofpleasure-but also one of amazement. Bothof them are experienced in the world ofdance music, but they freely confessed thatthey had no idea that they would comeacross such brilliant dance bands and suchmusicianship in Britain.

IN EFFECT, they said that the Americanentertainment profession has the firm ideathat the British are staid and lagging farbehind in the sphere of music. But whatis the real truth ? They come over hereexpecting to suffer in an arid musicaldesert and they find a crop that astoundsthem.

" WHY DON'T you make more noise aboutyour bands ? " asked Cab Calloway. " Whydon't you tell everybody how good theyare ? Ted Heath's Band would be a sen-sation in the States, given good exploita-tion stack of records to be pushedout over the networks there in advance.They'd be a riot. So would DickieValentine."

TALKING ABOUT the Jamboree, he said heand Howard were absolutely amazed atthe arrangements used by the bands. " Inthe States," he explained, " it's only thetop name bands who could have scores likethat. They're the only ones who can affordthe high-priced writers of such material.The less famous groups (and they are inthe majority) have to make do witharrangements that aren't in the same streetas the stuff your writers are turning outhere."

SUMMING UP, they both declared they weredelighted and amazed at our standard ofplaying, our ideas, our presentation and ourknowledge of and feeling for every type ofdance music and jazz.

IT'S ENOUGH to make the profession feelvery proud of itself, and we're very gladindeed to have the opportunity of convey-ing to the profession the spontaneous andsincere plaudits of so distinguished acouple of visitors to our shores.

IT IS certainly time that our musicians ridthemselves of their inferiority complex, andrealised that they have plenty to shoutabout. KILLED A COW-AND LOST

TRAVELLING through thenight last Saturday to

compete in the All -BritainFinals at Belle Vue, Manches-ter, Fred Hedley and his Bandwere involved in what mighthave been a more serious acci-dent.

The coach in which they weretravelling struck a herd of cowsduring thick fog, and, afterskidding right across the roadand almost overturningfinished up by missing a tele-graph pole by inches. A cowwas killed, and Hedley himselfcomplained of an injury to hisback.

Despite the unfortunate jour-ney, the boys competed in theafternoon without any sleepand finished fourth. The Quin-tet, of Wolverhampton, werefirst, with Portsmouth's JohnnyLyne Orchestra, second, andRaymond and his Orchestra, ofSutton Coldfield. third.

Cave leavesRandall for GoldNORMAN CAVE who has

been with Freddy Randalland his Band on and off forabout three years, both on pianoand trombone, has come to anamicable agreement withFreddy Randall, and is leavingthe band.

Both are reluctant to partcompany, but Norman wants ajob with more scope for hisarranging capabilities - ofwhich Freddy speaks veryhighly - plus more readingwork.

ALONG and famous association between bandleaderand restaurant comes to an end at the beginning of

next month, when Edmundo Ros leaves the Bagatelle,Mayfair Place, W, at the expiration of his present con-tract on November 1.

Edmundo started at theBagatelle on March 16, 1942.and told the NME this week:" In my ten years there, I haveenjoyed the best possible runthat any bandleader could wishfor, I have been very success-ful and very lucky, and I lovethe place. But now circumstan-ces have forced me to ask themto release me from my contractwhen it expires."

The reason, he went on toexplain, is that he proposes todevote all his energies to theCocoanut Grove, Regent Street,W., of which he is the owner.

Both changes took effect atthe beginning of this week whenthe "Squads " recommencedtheir one-nighters and broad-casting dates.

British Musicians TakingHonours in kmerican Poll

DEFINITE indications that British bands and artistsare at last getting a break in the States came this

week with a report from NME New York correspondentBill Coss that at the mid-wav stage in the " Metronome "Poll vote -counting, five British stars are figuringprominently in their respective sections.

Blind pianist -leader GeorgeShearing is topping the smallgroup and pianist sections;singer Alan Dean looks likebeing among the first ten malevocalists this year; Ronnie Balland Johnny Dankworth havereceived several votes apiece

in the piano and alto groupings,and Ted Heath's name figures inthe big band division.

Shearing and Dean are, ofcourse, currently working inthe States and have been heardin person by the American publie generally; Ronnie Ball wen

over there more recently, buthis appearance in the Pollwould seem to indicate that heis already making his presencefelt.

The success of Ted Heath'sexcellent recordings for Decca'sLondon label is reflected in thislatest news of his popularityacross the Atlantic. Regularreaders of " Metronome " and" Downbeat " will already knowof the customary high ratingsHeath discs get from thesemagazines' reviewers.

The presence in the listings

of Johnny Dankworth mustlargely be due to the playing ofhis records over disc -jockeyshows, as although Esquirehave made arrangements withthe Mercury label for someDankworth LP's to be issuedthere, Esquire executive CarloKrahmer doesn't know whetherthe discs are yet on sale to theAmerican public.

Sid Gross, New York's Britishdisc -jockey, is known to featureJohnny's recordings wheneverhe can, and Leonard Featheralso plugs the British alto star.

After a hectic day's rehear-sal with the Avro studio orches-tra under Jos Cleber, and theshow which followed, Lita re-ceived a phone call from theDutch War Ministry asking herif she could be so kind as tosupply pin-up pictures for themany Dutch soldiers in hos-pital who had been unable toget to the show but had heardthe broadcast.

Similar requests were alsoreceived from several civilianhospitals.

Following his 250 BBC air-ings, his numerous recordingsand Luxembourg dates, it isnot surprising that Derrick hasalready received several offers.However, the NME learns thatDerrick has placed his futurerepresentation in the hands ofagent Harry Dawson, joiningsingers Harry Dawson andDiana Coupland under theDawson agency wing.

Among Derrick's first dateswill be a solo airing in " Ren-dezvous," which is recorded onOctober 21 for transmission onNovember 11.

DESPITE the fact that (as exclusively forecast in theNME) the Stanley Black Orchestra's 81 -year -old

BBC contract expires on January 3, listeners will still beable to hear the band on the air five times each week.

After the expiration of thecontract, the group will con-tinue to be used to accompanytwo radio shows, each with arepeat broadcast, and will playone dance music spot each week.These engagements will be onthe same basis as that onwhich any other big band isbooked for radio.

WITH the NFJO's OctoberJazz Band Ball only three

days away, two additionalbands have been added to theattractions already lined up forthis annual jazz feast.

Monday night's 4i -hour pro-gramme will now include theGoodman -style jazz of theDave Shepherd Quintet withvocalist Jo Searle, plus the" modern Dixieland " music ofBobby Mickleburgh's Bobcatsfrom London's Club Creole.

As previously reported, theother bands playing will bethose of Mick Mulligan, FreddyRandall and the Crane River,with a guest star attraction inthe person of blues singer IreneScruggs. Singers George Mellyand Neva Raphaello will alsobe featured.

Theatre, Reding, hasrecently taken a turn for thebetter in the musical depart-ment. All this week PalaceTheatre audiences have beentE king the opportunity of hear-ing the inimitable Issy Bonn,with his own particular brandof melody.

Commencing next Monday(20th) Billy Thorburn will besupporting Nat Mills and Bobbiewith his special brand of piano -melody, whilst a week Monday(27th) Nat Gonella will paywhat is probably his first visitto the Palace Theatre.

The bigannual Ball run by the ReadingConservatives will be held atthe Olympia on Friday next(24th) at which Don Turk andhis Music will play, whilst to-night (Friday) also at theOlympia the Teen -Can -Teen Re-opening Ball will be held withDon Turk again in attendance.

This caters more specially forReading's youth. The Society ofLccal Yokels will hold the mostnopularBall of the year onFriday, October 31, when theirannual Halloween Ball willbe held at the Olympia.

THE title of the previous± series, " Jazz Club," wasapparently not quite highfalutin enough to satisfy theselect members of our pioushierarchy, so as a result wemust now move the radio fromthe drawing room into thestudy to receive the profoundcontent of " The World of Jazz."

On the other hand, afterhearing this episode I shouldimagine that most listenerswould be inclined to situate itin a smaller, but much moreappropriate, spot !

Taking the programme as awhole, if there's ever been ahalf-hour that had less to offerlicence -holders than this, Ripleyshould hear about it.

CranksApart from the general listen-

ing public, or even those whoare not averse to jazz in theuncommercial manner, itseems incredible that anyone atall should have their intelli-gence insulted by an offeringthat catered for " collecting "cranks, and jazz sycophantswho believe anything, if they'retold loud and long enough.

The first part of the show,admittedly, presented records,etc., of honest - to - goodnessAmerican Negro folk music,and undoubtedly Charles Chil-ton spent a lot of time in re-search to procure them, butsurely, kind sir, 5 p.m. Saturday,on the Light programme, is theleast fitting time, if any, tosatisfy the desires of a few wholike to hear the primitive musi-cal outpourings of a frustratedand unhappy people takingconsolation in religion.

That modern jazz had itsroots here is an accepted fact,but otherwise Mr. Chilton'schore should take its placeamongst other educative fare onthe Third Programme (avecM. Preston et cie).

The second phase was pro-vided by Mr, Ernest Borneman.There is also a place for that,on much less hallowed ground.

result of an experiment thatemanated from the eminentgentlemen's "Jazz Workshop,"I can only comment on itshowling success, and suggestthat he cashes in on the idea atonce, by selling it to the pro-dur^fr of the' " Goon Show."

The wholttYnovel effect of thisgem of origmality was to gathertogether a group of musicianswho have acquired some repu-tation on their respective in-struments, and then make themplay on something entirely dif-ferent!

Jazz today, we were told, isdull-Armstrong, Parker andKenton-who wants to playlike them ? What we need is anew sound, and Mr. Bornemanhas it.

JACK PARNELL AND HISORCHESTRA

Friday, October 10,3 to 3.45 p.m. Light

FIRST things first, so let mecongratulate Mr. Parnell on

having the good sense to ex-change his signature tune fromthe dreary dirge that was, forthe bright and fitting musicaltag of " Jack's Back."

This, I presume, being in re-sponse to a little well-meaningcriticism-a sensible trait thatshould ensure his success andthe unlikelihood of anyonewishing to see the back of Jack!

This is still the band withthe beat that's " mostest on theball." The rhythm section cantake most credit for such ahappy state of affairs althoughthe front line, which has alwaysexuded that air of youthfulexuberance, rides well andform a well -knit partnership.

I always had a sneaking feel-ing that the JP group weremore than dependent on theterrific drive of trumpeterJimmy Watson. On this broad-cast, however, it was quiteobvious that in spite of the factthat his absence could be felt,there was no sign of a crisis,and his deputy, Albert Hall,stepped into the breach quitenobly. If it was the samegentleman who acted as soloistalso, the compliment is two-fold.

High StandardOther soloists maintaining a

high standard were trombonistKen Wray and alto playerDerek Humble.

Whilst on the instrumentalslant, a surprising feature isthat whereas the JP job isalways subconsciously regardedas a hotbed of brass, it wasthe saxes as a section that werethe most impressive. Forceful,yet tuneful, they showed signsof intensive rehearsal and en-thusiastic co-operation.

Vocally, my enthusiasmwanes.

Our maestro appeared toemerge the most successful,with much improved dictionand a style that stays right withthe beat.

Maurice Allen somehow justmisses the boat, and the beat aswell, and the rather timidefforts of Lorna Haven didn'tsound very comfortable en-sconced in a band of such pro-pensities.

The arrangements were of akind that showed full under-standing of the material onhand to portray them.

As a contrast, the IvorMairants guitar group tickledtheir way, but not my palate.

Opinion : The bandsman'sband.

TITO BURNS AND HISBAND

Tuesday, October 14,12 to 12.30 p.m. Light

AS much as it's a recognisedfact that bands must bow

to the edict of commercialism ifthey want to survive as regu-lar broadcasters, it is also ac-cepted that if an outfit containsespecial intrumental talent, itshould be used.

Tito Burns, whose apprecia-tion of stylish jazz has beenmuch admired in the past, seemsto have gone to the greatestlengths to prevent even a glim-mer of it appearing.

Much publicity was given tohis statement that out of themany trumpeters auditioned toreplace Albert Hall, none werecapable of coping.

On today's hearing, the littlework there was to do on anyinstrument, could have beendone by many hundreds of theprofession.

Mainly VocalFor instance, the inclusion of

trombone star Harry Rochewould not only surprise manylisteners, but only on carefulhearing was it possible toknow that this instrumentexisted in the group. Unlessthis was a coincidence today, itwould seem that the gatheringtogether of such top classplayers was a waste of timeand money.

It was a pity that Mr. Burnshad to mention Billy Cottonduring his announcing, for itdrew attention to the fact thathe was trying to emulate hispolicy, and in spite of Mr. B'ssimilar perkiness, lack ofmaterial and too much band -room chit-chat made compari-sons somewhat odious.

The accent, therefore, beingmainly vocal, it would be aswell to confine any other com-ment to the purveyors of wordsand music.

Terry Devon, I do, and alwayshave liked immensely.

Paul Vaughan passes muster.but would be much more athome in the American Legion.

Tito hirnself,' with a warm

personality and a wealth ofexperienced musicianship, incommon with many other band-leaders,. is handicapped by' nothaving much of a voice.

Coleridge Goode, excels innonsensical asides, but as afull chorus vocalist ? I don'tthink so. Incidentally, Mr.Goode, the electric bass morehindered than helped.

Throughout the show, Icouldn't cast off the feelingthat the whole approach seemedto be aimed more at visualthan aural entertainment.

VVE included this show for.11- review because, theoretically,it was mostly composed ofmusical acts. In practice itturned out to be something ofa masquerade and a good op-portunity to point out justwhat hardships our gallantfighting forces have to face evenin times of peace!

Unfortunately, although itwas the Royal Navy that had tobear the brunt of things, HomeService listeners were on the

receiving end as well.Of course, it might be that

the case of the former it W sa premeditated plan conceivedby the BBC to keep the boysin fighting mood, but in thatcase it should have been con-fined to barracks.

Starting off with an organistwho sounded as if he weremanning the pumps, the man onthe bridge then announcedthrough his duffle coat that theywere about to be boarded by theSong Pedlars.

Doubtlessly remembering thatthe fleet would be commandedby an American, this partytried to overcome him withnostalgia viz Yankee songs andaccents.

Their intonation should havesufficed.

A Cold Night?The second wave was pro-

vided by Tommy Riley plusharmonica. He tried the tech-nique of blinding them withscience.

A few tunes they knew mighthave won them over withoutdifficulty.

Next came two gentlemenwhose bubbling vocalism rathergave one the impression thatthey were frogmen. The pointsin their " point " numbers, how-ever, were of a much older andconsiderably less subtle device,

Finally, the oldest trick inthe world was tried. Subjectionby feminine wiles.

Once again it was an unfor-tunate choice for, whatevershe might have otherwise in theway of talent, Miss Innesshowed that there was littlecharm that day in Charmian.

The whole operation was re-ceived with much applause,shouting and whistling. I canonly think it must have been avery cold night.

Opinion: A good excuse forthe Fleet getting "lit up."

Williams early in Decemberbrings this neglected pianistinto the limelight once more.

She is known over here forher brilliant work with theAndy Kirk band, althoughseveral of her solo pianosides have been released inthis country from time totime. Notably " Drag 'Em "on Brunswick 02507, " Sweet(Patootie) Patunia " / " TheRocks " on Brunswick 03009and the Columbia issue of"Clean Pickin' " and"Swingin' For Joy"(DS.5oo3).

HINES-KIRKMary Lou Williams was born

42 years ago in Pittsburgh, Pa.,and began studying classicalmusic before she had left school.

The keyboard work of veteranEarl Hines turned her talentstowards jazz. By 1925 she hadplayed on the Orpheum theatrecircuit with an act calledSeymour and Jeanette as apianist, and entered the musicalprofession seriously a year laterwhen she joined John Williams'Syncopators.

Mary Lou found the jazz shewas called upon to play excitingenough but John Williams provedeven more attractive. She

married him and stayed with theoutfit until 1928.

It wasn't until she was offeredthe piano stool with the currentlysuccessful Kansas City groupled by bass saxophonist AndyKirk in 1929 that her real chancecame. Andy Kirk's TwelveClouds of Joy had alreadystirred the jazz field with a fewearly pieces like " Honey JustFor You " (Brunswick 01054)and " Corky Stomp " (Bruns-wick 01211) by '28.

The resultant improvementaused by the new pianist's finerrangements, plus the superb

silos she featured, began to havean effect and by 1936 the bandhad left its native Kansas Cityfor extensive tours which addedconsiderably to its popularityand fame.

RECORDINGSBy this time its records were

attracting a great deal of favour-able comment from critics, parti-cularly "Christopher Columbus"/" Froggy Bottom " (ColumbiaDB.5000) and " Moten Swing "on Columbia DB.5o15.

Every review heaped praiseon the dark head of Andy Kirk'syoung pianist -arranger, MaryLou Williams.

One of her celebrated record-ing dates was behind BluesSinger Mildred Bailey in 1939.examples of which are stillremembered with " ArkansasBlues " (Parlophone R.2685)a n d " Barrelhouse Music "(R.2692).

Amongst the last swing discsshe made with the Kirk outfitwere two gay numbers, " BigTime Crip " and " 47th StreetJive " on Brunswick 03293.

Another fardous swing bandleader to use her talents wasBenny Goodman. Her pen canbe traced on several Goodmanband recordings.

In the last io years little hasbeen heard of her over here.She experimented in the modernHarlem idiom for some time.The powerful Kansas City swingof the Negro orchestra of AndyKirk had fallen from grace beforethe advanced chords and har-monic experiments of the newmodern school.

Mary Lou Williams' riding,graceful music was too delicate,too tasteful to mix with theextreme moderns, and it wasnever of the earthy ragtimeschool beloved of the purist.

It blended with the greatNegro big band era of goodswing music which gave usBenny Moten, Count Basis,Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunce-ford, Fletcher Henderson, DonRedman, Luis Russell, and, ofcourse, Andy Kirk.

The fruity, rich days of the1930's will be remembered witha certain amount of genuinenostalgia when one of itsgreatest stars hits these jazz -starved shores.

THEdate for the new Annual

General Meeting of theNFJO is now fixed. As theprevious AGM was declared il-legal by the newly appointedCommittee voted in on a blockon September 14, the comingmeeting has also been fixed atthe same place, the MapletonRestaurant in Coventry Street.

The date is definitely Novem-ber 23 and the " session " willrun from 11 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

The NFJO Secretary is al-ready contacting all memberclubs eligible to attend.

(-NINE of the most significant- happenings in the Britishjazz world took place last week-end when Blues singer IreneScruggs took the Crane RiverJazz Band in hand for pre-NFJO October Jazz Ball re-hearsals in Soho.

Unknown to the musicians,Irene was a seasoned band-leader and producer. Her orig-inal scores and coaching led thepurist Cranes into unknownterritory and her experienceand understanding turned theminto proficient accompanists.

Assisted by her daughterBaby Scruggs, she directed theband through unfamiliar chordchanges with numerous anec-dotes on the palmy days ofearly Chicago. Her knowledgeof jazz and jazz musiciansproved a revelation.

THE JAZZ SCENEinternal troubles mainly due toMU intervention last June whenthey attempted to introduceAmerican jazz stars to Britainit is perhaps significant thatthe last promotion by the oldCommittee should feature themost important contribution tolocal jazz yet made.

It is Irene's long -reaching ex-perience in jazz as well as herundoubted ability to convey thefruits of it to a bunch ofLondon jazz musicians whichmakes her so important. Thefact that she is likely to remainover here for some time yetmerely underlines her value tothe British jazz scene.

It is to be hoped that beforelong, on the strength of her per-formance on Monday at theHammersmith Palais which iscertain to be nothing short ofsensational, some of our mostenterprising promoters will uti-lise her superb talents.

* *THE Portsmouth Rhythm Club

reopened on Monday, Octo-ber 6, at their new premises atthe " Sir Robert Peel " to acapacity crowd. Star of the ses-sion was Doreen Nutter, guest-ing from the Brighton Jazz Clubwith down to earth blues andpiano playing.

Also featured as an additionalattraction were the Bermudians,a coloured quartet boasting ahome-made bass created out ofpacking case, a guitar and someclose harmony vocals.

The resident band, Ron Male'sJazzmen, presented a pro-gramme of " Chicago Jazz." Thefollowing week's bill included aspot for the modernist memberswith the debut of the TerryFlinn Quintet. Compere FrankHurlock capably emceed bothmeetings.

AT the Nottingham RhythmClub's fortnightly record

sessions Vogue chief DougWhitton gave an interestingrecital, including some of hisown company's coming releases,on Tuesday, October 14. OnOctober 28 bandleader MickGill is booked to presentanother " Mixed Grill " follow-ing the success of his previousone last year. The venue is the" Lion Hotel " in Clumber St.

WithAde Monsbourgh doublingvalve -trombone and alto,the group completed atriumphant tour of severalstates winding up in Mel-bourne where they're con-centrating on radio, re-cording, and play ingtsociety balls.

Graeme's "RockingHorse Rag ", composed inLondon on HumphreyLyttelton's piano, is prov-ing a worthy successorto his English - recorded" Black and White Rag ",which has swept thecountry with almost dailyairings over the radio.Graeme is shortly to starthis own DJ show for ABCto feature European jazz.*

Humphrey Lyttelton andhis Band made history atthe Parlophone studioslast week by playing theirrepertoire in one chunkstraight on to tape, thuseliminating the wastedenergy of recording titleby title, often with severaltakes of each.

Testimonial for the tech-nique is that the boys.were better able to relaxand looked far fresherafter the session, whichoccupied little more than'half the usual time.*

The USA certainly takesits jazz education seriously.Following the lead set byNew York, Yale, and Min-nesota. no less than thirtyAmerican universities areincluding jazz courses inthe autumn curriculum.Most are based on Profes-sor Marshall Stearns'" Perspective In Jazz " lec-tures given at N.Y. Uni-versity, which run thegamut from jazz prehistoryto theory on the music'sfuture. *

Wonder how many ofyou picked up the LouisArmstrong concert fromGermany on Saturdaynight ... and were treatedto a nostalgic memory ofthe pre-war JimmieLunceford Band? TrummyYoung played and sang"Margie " almost phrasefor phrase as he did onthe band's 1938 record; butthe same routine soundeda bit thin on a six -piece.

What a motley crewLouis carries this trip !His lyrical lead seemedcompletely hamstrung byMarty Napoleon's jerky" modern -style " chordingand Cosy Cole's cymbal -jangling. Bob McCracken'sclarinet was somewherearound, but apparently de-tached from the ensembles.He seemed to spend all histime trying to find a wayin again. Yes, I wonder ifyou picked it up . . andmaybe sighed for the All -Stars ?

SOME NEW U.S. RECORDSLAST WEEK we reviewed

some new Ronnie Scottrecords.

THIS WEEK we invitedRonnie and the musicians herecorded with, to give theircomments on a new AmericanLP recently- acquired by your" Modern Mood !' men.

This was a " Blindfold Test "with a difference. All we knewwas the musicians'; names thatthey were young; that theycame from Selttle; and thatthese tracks were extracts froma 1951 jazz concert.

To our way of thinking, thisrecord will cause even morecontroversy over here than didthe first Bruebecks a year ago,and more recently, " TheChamp " which still evokesextremist comments in lettersfrom readers of this page.

' ATMOSPHERIC'In parts, these sides symbol-

ise all the elements which pro-voked Brian Gladwell to writea fighting letter to the NMElast week. The LP is almostthe complete antithesis of itstitle, " A Concert of Cool Jazz."

It's "atmospheric " jazz-withthe usual mixture of exagger-ated exhibitionism, musicalhumour, good and bad music,and audience hysteria, that goto make up the ingredients ofthe average jazz concert, especi-ally in the States. But it's per-formed with a crisp, cleanverve and vitality, the like ofwhich we haven't heard orenjoyed so much, for a longlong time. In a way, it's jazz" party" music-the kind youlike to hear when you're enjoy-ing yourself, and don't reallywant to listen too closely orcritically. It's happy-go-luckyjazz-and whether Brian Glad -well, you or we like it, there'sdefinitely a place in everymodernist's musical outlook forstuff like this.

SELF-EXPLANATORYThe titles are more self-

explanatory than they'd seemat first sight. Briefly (a) is afast swinging blues; (b) themost sincere in -tempo side, withgood (but prolonged) piano; (c)a boppish Highland Fling; (d)a crazy, pervertedly humoroushoe-down; (e) a rather lessthan more frantic " FlyingHome "; (f) a "'straight," out -of -tempo piano solo; (g) ash ifile twelve -bar, smacking

Ronnie : " Commercially, thisis very successful-but music-ally, it's insincere and inart-istic. There's nothing new.Jacquet, or Hampton's varioustenors would have done it somuch better. There's no depth-just four happy guys blowing.The tenor gets a nice sound, onthe whole, and has a good tech-nique. His tonguing's amazing;never heard anything like itbefore. Is it good? Well, it'sdifficult !"

Dill : " The whole thingsimply generates excitementand atmosphere. It's very enter-taining and humorous, and thesort of record I'd like to havearound the flat. The pianist'sextremely good ; his Deep

Purple' is most artistic. As astylist, well, he's assimilatedthe mannerisms of Garner,Tatum and Nat Cole, andstrings them together mostconvincingly."

Kinsey : " This is a muchmore typical reflection of anAmerican jazz audience's tem-perament than that shown at,say, a Charlie Parker concert.It's the little things that knockthem out. If English boys hadput on a concert like this,there'd have been much moregood music, as opposed torather shallow, hysterical gim-micks. Comparing it with TheChamp'? That was full ofgood jazz !"

CONTROVERSIALCrombie : "They're all compe-

tent musicians, and I think theycould prodice much better jazz"(Ronnie disagreed with this)." I'm fed up with art for art'ssake-this is art for the people'ssake, and there's a big marketfor it. As bop, it's all been saidbefore, and the gimmicks re-flect the poverty of ideas incurrent American jazz trends.The pianist's wonderful, but it'sobviously his group !"

Martin : As entertainment,it's most successful, and helpsbring jazz to the people-whowon't miss the real jazz contentthat it lacks for the musician.But it hasn't the depth or sin-cerity of the Jimmy Wither-spoon or Helen Humes sides."

GENERAL VERDICT. Con-troversial (but good) atmo-sphere stuff, with jazz contentaimed more at the fans thanmusicians-and, as such, wellworthy of inclusion in yourcollection. We think you'd enjoyit.

It is interesting to note thatone of the titles, " Supersonic,"includes a short bass solo, some-thing which we have never pre-viously come across in any ofLennie's conceptions.

and " Porgy and Bess " star Cab Callo-way said that he enjoyed every minuteof listening to the cream of Britishbands, and expresseddelight and amazementat their high standard.

Introduced to theaudience b y RayEllington, Cab wasgiven a tremendousovation, and here he isacknowledging t h echeers.

Jamboree Night Jazz, What anight for the fans! Didn't getto Feldman's, where a packedhouse greeted a galaxy of stars,but Ted Heath put up the" House Full" sign (as usual)at the Palladium. The '51 hadits largest -ever crowd, and theParnell band showed all theywould have done earlier in theday at Kilburn, if they'd hadmore time.

Along at the Flamingo,another packed house cheeredthe debut of the " ChamberMusic Society of Lower RegentStreet." Ralph ("Haven't en-joyed myself so much foryears") Sharon led Joe Harriott(alto); Jimmy Skidmore (tenor)and Tony Crombie, who,though handicapped by the lackof a bassist, played the mostfantastic beat -y drums any-one's heard in ages.

By the end of the evening,J o hnny Dankworth, DonRendell, Eddie Harvey and EricDawson had joined the group,and how the crowd loved it !

Thank you, boys, for a won-derful evening's jazz.

At a time when so manypeople in and out of the pro-fession contemplate sponsoredradio, I looked forward to thisevening as I settled down atshortly after 7 p.m., particu-larly since I had not heardLuxembourg since 1939.

ANONYMOUS BANDS !The night moaned and

shrieked of bad production.The " Hutch " programme,

however, was an infinite im-provement from every point ofview, except fcr the out -of -tuneguitar which seemed pointless,anyway.

Then came the new Vera -and what a great artist she is,with her orchestrations alwaysas sparkling and well conceivedas her English Rose vocal work.You can rely on me to buyBritish as long as you, MissLynn, continue to sell yourpresent delightful recipe.

My one criticism also appliesto the George Elrick showwhich followed; why the bigsecret as to the musical namesconnected with the programme?How can sponsors expect the

public to become followers ofanonymous orchestras andchoirs which they present?

" Hiltone "-your ladies willlove, and maybe use you moreif you have Vic Damone com-pere as well as sing your show.I'm sure he is the talking voiceyour audience wants.

If anyone could find a faultwith Peter Madren it is that hesometimes fails to make it quiteclear that he is presenting aprogramme of gramophone re-cords, as in the case of the EricWinstone spot.

The element of atmosphericscan confuse the most observantlistener into the illusion that heis listening to a recorded pro-gramme.

WHAT I MISSED" Highlights," in this case of

1933, is what it sounds, andquoting Max Bygraves, for noreason, " a good idea, son!"although I feel the person whoproduced the disc of "StormyWeather" to typify the periodshould be told that the TexBenecke version, made nearlytwenty years later was, to saythe least, inappropriate.

The evening ended with apleasant choice of records inGeoffrey Everett's " Tunes OfThe Time."

Upon glancing at my "RadioTimes," I find that I missed" Twenty Questions," " VarietyFanfare," " Gently Bentley,""Any Questions," the news, andAmbrose -oh! and half of theShow Band.

Did I make a good deal? Imust be honest . I don't thinkI did.

" Box Biographies"PAUL HEIMANN

BORN Vienna, June 1, 1924.Paul's parents were both

musicians. He started violinlesscns at the age of 6 andstudied for over four years.

On his 12th birthday Paulreceived his first piano accor-dion and became quite aproficient player.

1938 he came to Englandand within a little time wasplaying at Youth Centres, andformed his own outfit to playlocal dances.

Whilst doing important warwork Paul met Maurice Kinn,who booked him for the Poto-mac Restaurant leading hisown band on accordion. Hiswas one of the first groups tofeature tenor, clarinet andaccordion front line to give abig band noise.

1946, Johnny Dennis tookover the band which touredGermany, etc., and in 1948Paul reformed his own groupagain and is kept very busyplaying the less publicisedsociety gigs.
