Weapons● Rifle: Main weapon used by the British in trenches.● Machine Gun: 4 to 6 men to work on a flat surface.

Power of 100 guns.● Gas: German army first to use chlorine gas .

Burning sensation in throat and chest pains, suffocating the victim.

● Mustard Gas: Most deadly gas that is fired into the trenches. Takes up to 12 hours to take effect. Effects include: Blistering skin, vomiting, sore eyes, and internal bleeding.

● Zepplin: (Blimp) Used for bombing raids.

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

● First introduced in WW1 in early 1915.● German Navy attacked all merchant ships in

the British Isles. This included the sinking of the British ship Lusitania on May 7, 1915.

● Woodrow Wilson sent the German government a strongly worded letter asking them to end the attacks.

● Germany continued to use submarines aggressively.

Fighting techniques● Mining: Specialist troops would dig saps under the opposing

trenches, fill them up with amatol, and the prior to the attack, blow them up.

● Trench Warfare:– Troops dug trenches and relied on a modern rifle and a rapid

fire machine gun.– “No Man's Land”: rough land in between the enemy's trenches.– To break through enemy lines, both sides began with massive

artillery barrages.– Soldiers would scramble across “No Man's Land” towards the

enemies trench.– Usually stopped by the enemy rifles and didn't turn out well

most of the time.

Battle● The Battles of the Marne 1914:

On September 4, 1914, the rapid advances of the German army through Belgium and northern France caused panic in the French army and troops were rushed from Paris in taxis to halt the advance. Combined with the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) the Germans were eventually halted and the War settled into the familiar defensive series of entrenchment's.

There were in fact three battles fought around the Ypres salient during the War. The first, in 1914 was an attempt by the BEF to halt the rapid advances made by the Germans
