A brief History of New WaveNew Wave was founded as a Shaolin Kempo Karate school in 1985 by Shihan ErikKugel. In March of 2000, the academy was passed on to Shihan Fernando Fialho,Mestrando/Sensei Silas Pinto, and Shihan Carlos De La Cruz. The school hassince expanded to an academy that offers the traditional art of Kempo Karate andfluid art of African-Brazilian Capoeira. Throughout its transformations, one thinghas remained the same – a sense of community, fellowship and commitment toexcellent in the martial arts we offer. Curriculum
Joining a school can sometimes be one of the hardest decisions. Still, you have decided to joinNew Wave Self Defense, and we look forward to the opportunity of sharing one of the mostcomprehensive martial arts of our time, Shaolin Kempo Karate. Kempo by definition is Mixture. It is omnivorous by design and encompasses elements fromseveral arts with a particular foci on Chinese and Japanese based arts of self defense. The NewWave system, however, does incorporate the knowledge from the backgrounds of our instructors,which also includes Tae Kwon Do kicking and Jiu Jitsu techniques from ground self-defense.

UNIFORMUniform represent unity and fosters a feeling of team, hence, are extremely important to thecommunity aspect of the academy. All students are required to wear the full uniform during theweek. The options are full gi or gi pants with the team/school Tshirt. CLUBS and TEAMSOur program has several clubs and teams designed to challenge students and provide leadershipopportunities in the school. Clubs and Teams are available to intermediates and advancedstudents. This includes weapons training and performance team. EQUIPMENTNew Wave requires full protection equipment for all contact aspects of the martial arts. The gearMUST be approved by the instructors. For your convenience, we provide gear and have severalvendors with whom we collaborate for reliable, inexpensive gear.

▪ We order medium level gear, which provides very good protectionand are appropriate for the level of training and sparring matches. Members of the Performance team may be required to purchaseadditional gear depending on the requirements from tournaments.
TESTING and PROMOTIONSThe program holds 4 graduations per year. One of which is a large graduation, with workshops,demonstrations and other events. Fees for graduations and testing are separate and registrationswill be available once the child is deemed ready for the opportunity to test for promotion.All testing are lead by senior instructors (Shihans and/or Senseis). PLEASE NOTE: Graduations are celebrations. We cancel classes and encourage all of youto attend, regardless if you are going to be receiving a new belt. PRIVATES and CIRCUIT TRAININGWe also hold individual and group privates in all of our programs. You will have opportunitiesto talk to instructors about private lessons once you have been training for at least 6 months.DROP-OFF and PICK-UP POLICYVERY IMPORTANT: For minors – parents MUST walk the students into the building and pickthem up in the hallway. For the safety of your children, we would like to make sure they aregoing home with people we know. This also provides us with the opportunity to update you onupcoming events and activities. Take the time at drop-off to review the information boards. FLEXIBILITYThis is an extremely important dimension of the martial arts and should be exercised from thebeginning of one’s training.
Hold each pose for 1 minute each (only 6 minutes total – INVEST THETIME!) Additional stretches will be introduced in class to enhance your routine.
HEALTHY EATING and SLEEPINGBe mindful of your diet and sleep. Your energy in class heavily relies on healthy eating andsleeping habits. TOURNAMENTS and COMPETITIONPlease communicate with your instructors if you are interested in competition so that we cancreate an Individualized Training Plan for you. We host 2 inner-school tournaments per year andattend up to 5 out-of-school tournaments per year depending on student interests. WALL MONITOR and INFORMATION BOARDS
