She was later executed for being a Christian follower. In one account, she was killed by a sword. In another, she was dragged through the streets naked. For her martyrdom at the age of 12 or 13, she was made a saint and is the patron of young girls, chastity, rape survivors, and the Children of Mary. On February 1, we celebrate St. Brigid of Ireland. Born into slavery as Brigit, she shares a name with a Celtic goddess. When she was 10, her chieftain father became tired of her charitable nature and took her to the king of Leinster, with the intention of selling her. However, the King recognized her heart and suggested that she be let free. Evidence suggests that Brigid was a good friend of Saint Patrick. She later founded a school of art that included metalwork and illumination. She is the patron saint of Ireland, dairymaids, cattle, midwives, Irish nuns, and newborn babies. Volume 60 No. 4 January-February 2020 Our 96th Year

    Brothers:

Pleasant greetings to all of you. I hope everyone

had a wonderful Christmas season and has begun

2020 off to a stellar start. A few upcoming events are

as follows. On Friday, January 10, we will have our

annual Winter Picnic. On Sundays, January 26 and

February 23, we will have our monthly Family

Breakfast. On Friday, January 24, our council will

host a Third-Degree ceremony. Please come down

and see candidates receive their next step into

brotherhood. On February 8, we will have our second

annual 70’s Night. Try to attend this fun evening as

we turn back time and return to the sounds of

yesteryear. The end of February will start the

beginning of Lenten season with Ash Wednesday on

    February 26.

In our prayers, let us remember two saints that we

celebrate early in the new year. On January 21, we

honor St. Agnes. She was born in 291 AD and raised

in a Christian family. Many men sought her hand in

marriage, but she repeatedly refused, adding “Jesus

Christ is my only Spouse.” Many men felt insulted by

this and reported her to authorities. She was later

executed for being a Christian follower. In one

account, she was killed by a sword. In another, she

was dragged through the streets naked. For her

martyrdom at the age of 12 or 13, she was made a

saint and is the patron of young girls, chastity, rape

survivors, and the Children of Mary. On February 1,

we celebrate St. Brigid of Ireland. Born into slavery

as Brigit, she shares a name with a Celtic goddess.

When she was 10, her chieftain father became

tired of her charitable nature and took her to the

king of Leinster, with the intention of selling

her. However, the King recognized her heart

and suggested that she be let free. Evidence

suggests that Brigid was a good friend of Saint

Patrick. She later founded a school of art that

included metalwork and illumination. She is the

patron saint of Ireland, dairymaids, cattle,

midwives, Irish nuns, and newborn babies.

    Members of Joseph Barry Council,

    family members and friends delivered

more than 80 food baskets to families

in the Hicksville area on November

    23rd for Thanksgiving.

As usual the effort was led by Past

Grand Knight Brian Lee. The food

was acquired using the proceeds from

our annual golf outing as well as

    generous donations from Council

    members and others.

    Then on December 14th, we

    gathered again to make similar

    donations to families for Christmas.

Many of the volunteers who assisted are pictured

here including Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker.

Christmas at Joseph Barry Council 2019

The Christmas season at the Council

kicked off on November 30th, when we

hung our Keep Christ in Christmas signs

    throughout Hicksville.

    The Children’s Christmas Party took

place on December 7th. At the conclusion

of the event we presented several boxes of

toys to the US Marines as part of their

Toys for Tots initiative. We also

collected socks and underwear to be

    provided to those in need.

    December 14th, we delivered more

than 60 boxes of food to families in the

    area.

    Our Council Christmas party was

December 17th with the usual festivities

including a rousing rendition of the “12

Days of Christmas” led as always by PGK

    Eamon Tuohy.

Santa and his assistant had gifts for the kids at the

    Children’s Christmas party.

Deputy Grand Knight Joe DelPriore did the Santa duties at

    the Council party.
