The Street Graphic
project was our first
studio brief and
required us to create a
body of work exploring
the visuals of the
street. This could be the
exploration of street
art, signage, landscape
or just general street
environments.
One area I was
particularly interested
in was the typography of
the street. I researched
vintage typography and
typography that occured
accidentally.
However by the end of
the project I wanted
to look at how to
demonstrate how
alive the street is. I
experimented with
creating creatures out
of buildings and created
illustrations of ‘alive’
buildings.
Ultimately I created
an animation that
represented the flux
of Huddersfield for my
final piece. I created
the animation as a
loop to demonstrate
how the city never stops
and this can be seen
to the left. To go along
with this animation
I also created
some illustrations.
One encapsulates
Huddersfield town and
the other shows the
Huddersfield playhouse
as a ‘living’ building.
I’m happy with what I
created for this project
although my finished
piece didn’t have as
much impact as I’d
hoped. I think this
was down to lack of
experience in animation.

The Cabinet of
Curiosities project was
probably my favorite
project so far, this
project required us to
create a momento mori
or theatre of the mind.
A tribute or shrine like
piece of work.
I decided to base my
project around the
nightmares I had as
a kid. I wanted to
portray the mind as
a cabinet of curiosity
in itself and I did this
through an animation.
The animation takes
place inside a child’s
head featuring various
themes that were the
topics of my nightmares.
You can see from
these screen shots
that the monsters
in my nightmares
were influenced by
my environments
and surroundings.
The piece shows how
easily childrens minds
can be influenced by
their environments
and is inspired by my
experience.
During my research
into the topic, I
bought a jewerelly
box which played a
tune. I actually then
recorded and edited
this tune and used it
as the soundtrack to my
animation.
Most of the project
was created in Flash
using a graphics tablet
and uses both frame
by frame and tween
animation, all of which
was new to me so I
kept the designs pretty
simple. I was pleased
with the outcome
though as I think it
demonstrated my theme
effectively and was an
interesting take on the
brief. After creating this
animation I went on to
create others as I really
enjoyed making it.

The Earth Artifact project
was based around
the Voyager Golden
Records. A record sent
into space intended to
communicate with other
life forms. Our task was
to re-design the Voyager
Golden Records.
Inspired by the film A
Hitchhiker’s Guide to
the Galaxy, I created
an infographic style
concept. The idea
behind this was that
extra terresial life could
search about anything
on earth. Obviously this
is impossible to create,
but I created varius
animations for this
concept.
One was an infographic
like stlye introduction
to Earth, the other was
an animation showing
an example of an Earth
search. I used After
Effects primarily to
create the animations. I
hadn’t used After Effects
before so this was pretty
tricky, however I really
enjoyed using it.
My final animation
shows various
statistics about Earth
and the solar system
animated in interesting
ways. I used smooth
animation techniques
and the whole thing
was narrated using
an extract from the
Hitchhikers Guide to
the Galaxy audiobook
as I felt this was a
compelling way to
frame the animation.
I think this final
peice was pretty well
excecuted, however I
could have come up
with a more interesting
response to the brief.

Here you can see my
typeface inspired by the
modernist artist and
designer El Lissitzky.
I was particularly
inspired by his use
of perspective and
dimension in his work.
He often mixed 2D
and 3D shapes in
collages of shapes
and lines. I really liked
this combination of
dimension and so I tried
to re-create this vibe in
my typeface. Although
the font is not obviously
inspired by El Lissitzky,
I think it did this
successfully.
Simple cubes are a
recurring element
in El Lissizky’s work,
and so I based my
entire typeface around
cubes. Using cubes as
guidlines the shapes
within my font follow
the edges , corners and
general ‘flow’ of a cube.
I then made several
refinements to my
typeface to ensure
it look asthetically
pleasing and that the
letters were easily
ledgible. One thing I
tried to ensure was that
the letters flowed into
one another and didn’t
look too abrasive in a
sentence.
The guides I had to
follow meant that some
of the letters look a
little stiff. However I
think most of the letters
look pretty good, and
altough this font could
be a little tricky to use, I
think it could look cool
in uses auch as logo
designs.

One of our projects
was to create our own
manifestos. We looked
at a number of different
manifestos on the way
to creating our own.
One things I admired
about the manifestos
we analysed, was how
they are interpreted
different ways by
different people. I
wanted to create a
manifesto that was
unique and personal to
each reader.
I devised the best way
to do this was allow
the reader to actually
contribute. This gave
me the idea to create
a manifesto that was
full of blanks the
readers could fill in. The
manifesto I created,
Manifesto Blanc, is
concerned with self
evaluation and self
improvement.
The idea is to fill in the
various blanks and then
reflect on the answers
given. This should give
readers insights into
workflow, attitude and
general design practice.
I created a number
of different images
to go compliment
the manifesto. These
were ink blot tests;
psychological tests
designed to give an
insight into peoples
thoughts and emotions.
I decided Manifesto
Blanc would work
best in a book format
allowing readers to
keep the book and
reflect on it later,
perhaps to give a better
insight. I didn’t get
chance to do this, but
a mockup of the design
can be seen here.
