EXPLORE THE GEORGE: Sprite Computers

The future of home entertainment starts with Sprite Computers. Located on the corner of 108th and King George Blvd, Sprite Computers has everything you will need to complete your future home entertainment system. Something you may not know about Sprite Computers is that they are one of two authorized D-Box retailers in the Lower Mainland. Contrary to popular belief, D-Box technology is not only for your local movie theatre, but it can also be installed right in your home! There are over 1400 movies that can be linked to the engineered motion chairs. The chairs are then synched to the movements of the film,

giving you an intensely immersive movie watching experience. If a car makes a sharp right turn, or a space ships crashes into earth, you will definitely know it. With these seats, you can feel every vibration, movement, and shake throughout the film. A controller box receives a specific code from the Internet that then directs the chairs to create these incredible life like movements. If movies aren’t your thing, Sprite Computers is also a retailer of the latest virtual reality (VR) technologies, such as the HTC Vive. What really sets the HTC Vive apart from other VR systems is that it has two motion sensors called lighthouses, whereas others have one.

This allows you to move around the room, even tuck, jump, and roll while playing the game. Not sure if the HTC Vive is your thing? At Sprite Computers, you can rent time on their in-house HTC Vive system for $39.95/hour. Try it out with popular games such as Space Pirate Trainer, or any others they have downloaded in store. Want to know more about D-Box or the HTC Vive? Drop by Sprite Computers and talk to their friendly & knowledgeable staff about anything you may need.

OPTIONS: Call for Mentors

Options Community Services welcomes opportunities to collaborate with community groups and members. Through outreach, they hope to create lasting connections with the community to not only strengthen services they offer to their clients, but to be involved and give back as well.

This Surrey based organization has over 70 active programs in place. Their Downtown Surrey location is focused on providing Employment Services for immigrant and newcomer support. This aids their clients with integrating into the Canadian labour market. An opportunity for the community to become involved with the work being

done at Options Community Service is being apart of the Career Mentorship Program. Through this program, Options is able to connect their clients who are ready to start applying for jobs with industry professionals. This way, those who are seeking for jobs are able to learn directly from those who are already experienced with the work. The guidance provided by industry professionals will allow newcomers to feel more confident in their skills and what they have to offer to potential employers. Community members who are experts in their fields and also want to become involved can volunteer as a mentor for Options’ Mentorship Program. Through it, they will

meet one on one with a newcomer client and offer their expertise and advice. If this sounds like something you would like to do, contact Options Community Services to get started.

Other programs that Options Community Services offers to their clients to help better equip them to enter the Canadian job market is their Meeting Employer Event. This event, set up similarly to a job fair, enables newcomers to meet face to face with potential employers and allows them to demonstrate their employable skills right away. Through participating in both of these events, the Career Mentorship Program and the Meeting Employer Event, gives community members not only an opportunity to become more involved, but is also a valuable networking opportunity.

Options Community Services has recently moved into new offices in the Downtown Surrey core, and is excited to secure their roots in this area and make connections with the community.

EXPLORE THE GEORGE: Round-up Cafe

As a staple in the community for nearly 70 years, Round Up Café is truly a Downtown Surrey icon. “It’s a place for people to come in and feel like they’re at home,” says longtime manager, Tanya Abendroth.

On a recent visit to the 1950s-style diner, we tried their signature perogy breakfast, which has resided on their menu since the beginning. With generous portions of handmade perogies, Ukrainian sausage medallions, toast, and two fried eggs, this dish was a big hit with everybody at the table. “Everything on the menu is made from scratch and by hand”, explains Tanya, “from traditional Ukrainian dishes like perogies, cabbage

rolls, and borscht, to North American favourites like eggs benedict and sliders.”

With countless changes happening in the area surrounding City Hall, it’s important to have cultural constants like the Round Up Café. Originally opened in 1949 on what is now King George Boulevard, Round Up was bought by Orest and Goldie Springenatic in 1959 and has stayed in the family ever since. At 87 years old, Goldie is still actively involved with the restaurant, working in the kitchen whenever she can.

Orest was a prominent figure in local baseball, coaching two Whalley Little League teams every year from 1961 until his

passing in 1995. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1992 and was inducted to the BC Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. Orest’s legacy lives on in the café, with baseball memorabilia lining the walls and countless stories to be told.

“When kids wanted to play but their parents couldn’t afford it,” recounts Tanya, “he would pay for them out of his own pocket.” This included plane tickets for the players and parents to Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, where his teams made three appearances in the Little League World Series. “He wanted to keep the kids off the street – that was his big thing,” she said, reminiscing about the teams coming in for hamburgers and milkshakes after their games at the nearby diamond.

Every customer means a lot, says Tanya, with some coming in every day since the 1950s. One customer mentioned he keeps coming back for the coffee and homemade pie, and that the people at Round Up are his best friends. Next time you’re in Downtown Surrey, stop by Round Up Café and experience this unique spot for yourself.

EXPLORE THE GEORGE: Roath’s Pawn Shop

On August 25th of this year, Roath’s Pawn Shop celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Remarkably, this Downtown Surrey mainstay has remained in the same family since Ken Roath’s parents opened the shop in 1967 on the corner of Grosvenor Road.

What many passers-by may not know is that Roath’s is also a full service jeweler. With a goldsmith on staff and high-tech equipment including a laser welder and machine for x-raying gold, Roath’s can accommodate all your jewelry needs. This opens many doors for customization options. Customers can come in with their own custom design,

have it modeled in 3D, prototyped in resin for fitting, and finally molded into gold. Owner Ken Roath estimates that Roath’s has a larger variety of diamond and colour stone rings than any jewelry store in Surrey, and the largest selection of high-end watches in the province.

Over the years, Roath’s has developed relationships with a wide variety of loyal customers, including some whose families have been patrons for three generations. An interesting story that Ken told was the story of one customer who asked him if he could pawn his airplane. Taken aback Ken replied, “Well, if you can get it through the door…” The man

didn’t catch Ken’s sarcasm and soon returned with his 152 Cessna dismantled on a trailer.

“Everybody thinks we’re trying to get things as low as we can possibly get, and that’s the exact opposite,” Ken explains. “I want to give them the most amount of money that I can [while still being something they will] come back for.” The pawn shop essentially offers people a 3-month, interest-free loan. If they are not able to repay their loan, the item is sold by the shop and the person’s credit score is not affected. “We’re a company that helps the unbanked people,” says Ken, noting the importance of their service for people living paycheque-to-paycheque who might otherwise become caught in a cycle of debt.

The shop has evolved with the times, from being a Muntz Stereo-Pak dealer, to a seller of hundreds of VCRS, to its current state as an expert in guitars, jewelry, and more. Yet, while the most popular products change over time, the business is staying in the Roath family, with Ken’s son Kyle ready to continue the legacy of Roath’s Pawn Shop.

Surrey Fest Enter tainer: Mazacote

Surrey Fest Enter tainer: Pat Chessell

One of the headliners for Surrey Fest is Mazacote, a west coast Latin dance band who is sure to get the whole crowd moving! Mazacote is a local Canadian band who play horn driven New York salsa dura and beats from Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba. The group recently released a new album called “Nueva Era”, building off of the popularity they gathered with their debut EP “Salsa Dura”. Despite only having the two records out, Mazacote has developed a distinct west coast Latin sound, and “Nueva Era” was recently nominated

as World Album of the Year at the 2016 WCM Awards. The six member band has performed at a variety of venues, including festivals, clubs, special events, and now Surrey Fest. Their high energy and powerhouse performances make it easy for you to dance along to their Latin inspired beats. Featured in this sextet is singer-songwriter David Lopez, Latin Jazz trumpeter Malcolm Aiken, and a rhythm section with Chris Couto on timables, Carlos Arias on baby bass, Robin Layne on congas and Niho Takase on keys.

Some of these instruments you may not have heard of before, and help to give the band their distinct sound. Timables are shallow single -headed drums with a metal casing that initially were heard exclusively in Latin music. A baby bass is a particular type of electric upright bass. Make sure you come check out Mazacote at Surrey Fest to hear some funky Latin beats and dance along with the whole community. They are sched-uled to take the stage at 1:30pm so plan your day accordingly.

The Pat Chessell Band is a local Celtic Canadian band who has performed live acts all around the Vancouver area. You may even recognize them from our Eat Play Live Well festival back in July Pat and his band made a name for themselves when they performed as the house band at Surrey’s popular Dublin Crossing Irish Pub. Since then, they have performed over 200 shows in 2015 alone, and were even featured at the Irish Pavilion during the 2010 Olympics. Their energetic music is inspired by

traditional Celtic sounds with a mixture of roots, folk, and country influences. They have a unique style, mixing together old and new sounds that combined with Pat’s powerful vocals make them a refreshing and exciting act for all ages.

If you would like to hear a taste of what’s to come at Surrey Fest, you can find Pat’s album Lullabies and Battle Cries on iTunes, or visit their Facebook page at: https://w-ww.facebook.com/patches-sellband/

Surrey Fest Enter tainer: Fab Fourever

Get ready to be transported back to the 1960’s with a performance that brings the energy, humour, and charisma of one of the world’s best known bands right here to Downtown Surrey. Fab Fourever is Vancouver’s very own Beatles cover band, playing some of their most memorable hits without the assist of any pre-recorded music or vocals. This will be Fab Fourever’s third time performing at Surrey Fest. The group has been together since 2005, and since then have kept themselves busy performing all over Canada, Liverpool, and even Asia. Most recently, they performed in Baker Lake, Nunavut for a special Canada's 150th celebration on July 1st. The members of the band are huge Beatle’s fans

themselves, and all have their own unique stories that connect them to the band. Jody Tennant who plays as Paul was first introduced to The Beatles at the age of 5 when he listened to his parent’s records. To play the role of Paul, Jody taught himself to play left handed, and now can't go back to playing right handed! Kevin Davey stars as John, and has played at The Cavern, the band where the Beatle’s first got their start back in Liverpool. The newest member of Fab Fourever is Charles Boname as George, who has been studying the guitar work of George Harrison ever since he first performed in a Beatle’s cover band in high school. Ringo is played by the one and only Paul Kaszonyi, who often leaves audiences raving over his similarity both in looks and performance style to

Ringo. Unique to Fab Fourever is the addition of a fifth member, James Stobbe, who plays all of the detailed piano, orchestra and keyboards parts in order to help replicate the authentic sound of the Beatles while keeping the core 4 members true to their on-stage format. Fab Fourever not only brings the Beatle’s greatest hits back to life audibly, but puts on a full performance including period-correct instruments and detailed costumes. The quartet has put together a collection of rare and valuable instruments that would be the envy of any Beatle collector. Examples include Jody’s bass guitar which is painted identical to Paul McCartney’s psychedelic Magical Mystery Tour bass, and Paul’s Vintage 1968 Ludwig drum kit which is similar to the one Ringo performed with. The group’s passion for the music and onstage energy results in a splendidly authentic show that everyone will enjoy. Further info for the band can be found at: www.fabfourever.com

CANADA 150 ACTIVITIES RECAP

All across the country Canadians came together to celebrate Canada’s historic 150th birthday. Downtown Surrey was definitely no exception. From May until the end of the August the Downtown Surrey BIA has been working hard to bring together a variety of different Canada 150 activities for the community to enjoy. The summer started off with The Long, Long Table: A Canadian Affair. This event was all about bringing people together from all walks of life to enjoy a five course Canadian meal at a 280ft table. Over 200 guests attended the evening, enjoying live entertainment

and Canadian food from coast to coast. This event was a great way to kick off the DSBIA Canada 150 celebrations. What could be more Canadian than the good ol’ game of hockey? For three Thursdays in July the DSBIA hosted an open game of pick up floor hockey in Civic Plaza at Surrey City Hall. People from two to ninety-two came out to pass the puck and practice their game winning shots each week. Feature teams such as the Surrey RCMP, Phoenix Society and SFU’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology also came to play as the crowd cheered them on. The Downtown Surrey Pin Stop was another great way to

celebrate Canada’s birthday all while discovering new businesses along the way. There were five different Pin Stops to explore and collect lapel pins from throughout the summer. If you collected three pins or more you could also receive a special limited edition lanyard from the DSBIA offices. Celebrating Canada 150 in Downtown Surrey has been full of great memories, and one of kind a stories. The Downtown Surrey BIA team would like to thank everyone who participated in the Canada 150 celebrations this summer in Downtown Surrey.

SAFETY AUDIT RECAP

The Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association would like to thank the 240 businesses who participated in this years Safety Audit. The Safety Audit survey, dating back to 2006, provides an opportunity for the DSBIA to connect with our members. This year, a variety of different problems were highlighted within the results of the survey. The DSBIA has suggested the following programs to help its members with the issues highlighted: This year, a common problem found through the Safety Audit survey is the continued issue of discarded needles, and what to do with them. If you find a discarded needle in Downtown Surrey, please contact the needle pick-up service at 604-328-7610. If you are comfortable with discarding the needle yourself, we are able to provide training on how to safely and correctly do so.A common theme found among local businesses through the survey is that they are not sharing concerns of safety in the area with other neighbouring

businesses. To remedy this, Business Connect is a program that the DSBIA offers where we are able to connect businesses to their neighbours and help them share and circulate information on crime that is taking place. This way, everyone in the area can be aware of the problems and take appropriate precautions. Another program that the BIA offers to its members is graffiti removal. If you contact the BIA about graffiti on the exterior of your building, we will have it removed within 48 hours, free of charge. If you or your building have exterior cameras, please consider registering their locations to the City of Surrey’s location IRIS database found at www.surrey.ca/iris. This allows the police to be aware of surveillance camera locations and businesses that would be willing to allow the police to access them in case of emergencies. For more information on these programs please call the Downtown Surrey BIA at 604-580-2321, or email us at [email protected]

PLACEMAKING RECAP

As the Placemaking Intern, my primary role was to activate public spaces and enliven the community. The goal of all this is to create a sense of place for the community by having a place they feel drawn to and make them proud of the city they live in. Looking back throughout the summer, some of the highlights of these placemaking activities included: The Big Love Ball, which made appearances to different places in the community such as Surrey Urban Farmers Market and Movies Under the Stars. The Big Love Ball was a great way to promote positivity by asking loved best about the city on it.

We asked participants to draw on the sidewalks as part of the

Chalk Art at Holland Park. We had the Theatre Troupe leading the activity, and children were soon scribbling and writing with a variety of chalk colours. The chalk art was not only a fun and interactive activity for the children but it was a great way to catch the eye of those passing by the park. For the Eat Play Live Well Street Fair, we asked the volunteers from the Phoenix Centre to create art and showcase their work in an Art Exhibition. This event attracted a lot of local community members, and it was wonderful to see them stop by and view the artwork. We organized two Music Marathons for pianists to play twelve hours of

back-to-back entertainment. Seeing the audience sit down and nod their heads to the music was wonderful. Our aim to create a more vibrant and engaged community was made a reality and fulfilling to witness. All of these placemaking activities are steps to making Downtown Surrey a more lively and vibrant place for the people who live, work and play here. As a student intern this summer, I’ve been able to bring all of these projects together with the help of my colleagues. It has been a great experience on getting creative and seeing what we can do to make our community special. Written by Airi Nakamoto

FILMING RECAP

Summer 2017 at the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association has been filled with many fun events and activities. As the filming intern, I was tasked to capture the highlights of each event through video and photography. On top of events and activities, the push for the Downtown Surrey community to discover new businesses and stay local has continued in the Explore The George video series. Explore The George is a marketing campaign aimed at encouraging the community to discover the businesses in the Downtown Surrey area.

Working on my major project, Explore The George, I have gained invaluable experience. Being able to create connections, plan and set up interview scenarios, and developing a keen eye for shot composition are just a few

things that I learned during his time at the Downtown Surrey BIA. The video I am most proud of is Central City Brewing.

Another major project that I worked on was the Movies Under The Stars pre-movie video. This video comprised of multiple messages from the gold level sponsors for the event. For the pre-movie video this year, I was required to film representatives from a majority of the gold level sponsors. This process involved coordinating with each of the sponsors’ communications teams to organize where, when, and what to film. The final outcome was well received by its viewers.

Other projects that I worked on was filming events such as Canada Day, Eat, Play, Live Well, Fusion Fest, Hockey in the Plaza, Movies Under The Stars,

Pride Festival and The Last Skate. On top of filming these events, I also captured an outstanding 5000+ photographs during his time at the BIA.

My time here at the Downtown Surrey BIA has been extraordinary to say the least. I’ve made amazing connections, honed my skills and abilities, and made amazing friends that got me through this experience with a smile on my face. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work for the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association.
