We’re here to help everyone make and print their own newspapers.

We’ve printed this one so you can see what our digital broadsheet is like – it’s like this! This sample will show you how to use type, colour, and imagery to make your design look fantastic in newsprint.

We’ve picked some of our favourite newspapers to show off for inspiration.

To get started, visit our website: www.newspaperclub.com

You can download these samples, to compare a PDF on-screen with the printed result: www.newspaperclub.com/samplepdfs

USING COLOUR This is how colours look in print. The colour wheel goes from 100% to 0% opacity. Most colours are almost invisible at 10% opacity, so use over 20% opacity if you want colours to be visible in print.

IMAGE RESOLUTIONWhen using photos and images (such as .jpg, .tiff or .png), make sure the resolution is high enough to look clear in print. The resolution of an image is measured in dots-per-inch (dpi). A standard computer screen runs at 72dpi and looks pretty sharp, but in print we recommend going no lower than 150dpi. For best results, images should be closer to 300dpi.

300dpiThe ideal (and maximum) resolution to keep your images looking sharp in print.

150dpiOur minimum recommended resolution. This is the quality you would get from a 300dpi image set to double its original size.

25dpiLow resolution images will look very pixelated in print. This can happen if you stretch the size of an image too much.

72dpiThis resolution is ideal for images on a screen, but it can start to look pixelated in print.

BLACK AND WHITE IMAGESIf you’re printing black and white images, you can set them up in CMYK or greyscale. It’s a matter of preference, so here are examples of both formats.

DOGFOLIOShowcasing the striking animal photography of Klaus Dyba www.truedogsphoto.com

Working as a BMX photographer taught Klaus Dyba how to capture a fleeting action shot. So when he started photographing his chihuahua, Rocco, he used the same techniques (plus a few dog treats) to produce some striking portraits.

He now runs his own studio, True Dogs Photo, in Cologne and printed Dogfolio #1 to show off his most expressive dog portraits. “I wanted to show the portraits huuuuuuge!” Dyba tells us. So he chose a broadsheet – our biggest, boldest format.

Dyba’s approach to animal photography is to keep it simple. “I saw so many photos of dogs wearing strange clothes with soft, kitsch-y colourful backgrounds,” he says. Instead, Dyba uses dark backdrops and natural poses to highlight the personalities of his subjects. His clean, high contrast images looks great in newsprint.

“I was so in love to see my images in my own newspaper,” he says. “Print will never die!”

LICHTSPIELEStefan Huebsch pays tribute to the big screen with a big broadsheet www.stefanhuebsch.com

Lichtspiele is a celebration of early cinema through typography. Graphic designer and typographer Stefan Huebsch printed a newspaper to showcase his headline font of the same name, inspired by vintage film lettering. He used newsprint to evoke 1920s movie programmes and recall “a time when neon lights and marquee letters decorated cinema facades.”

www.newspaperc lub .comIt was only fitting to pay tribute to the big screen with a big broadsheet. Huebsch made the most of its oversize pages by turning the centre spread into a double-sided poster for his mock film, Retropolis: A Typographic Journey.

“It was a nice experience, unpacking the box of newspapers,” Huebsch says. “The smell of paper and print brings you back to a time when ‘digital’ was something from a sci-fi film.”
