King DavidBiBle Time2 Samuel 5:6–10
JerusalemHow proud all the people were that David was their new king.
One day King David marched toward Jerusalem. This city had been taken over by some enemies, but now David wanted it for himself and his family.
King David and his army fought and won against the enemies in Jerusalem. David moved into the city and built his home there. He called
it “The city of David”. He built up the walls around the houses. Jerusalem looked very grand and well protected!
King David became stronger and stronger because God was with him.
Talk TimeHow do you know that God is with you?
Prayer TimeDear Lord, thank you that you are walking by my side all the time. Amen.
King DavidBiBle Time2 Samuel 5:1–3
David becomes kingMany years later, after King Saul had died, David was at a place called Hebron.
“You are the one that has led us in war,” the people shouted.
“We have seen that the Lord is with you! We know that you are a shepherd who will become our king!” they said.
On that day David made a promise with them that he would be responsible and rule over them all.
Then David became king of Israel.
Talk TimeWho first anointed David as king? Look at Day 93.
Prayer TimeDear God, it’s so good that you have a very special plan for my life, just like you did for David. Amen.

Jesus in JerusalemBiBle TimeMatthew 21:1–16
A big paradeJesus said to his friends, “Let’s go to Jerusalem now because soon something very important is going to happen!” So
the twelve friends gathered up their belongings and walked with Jesus. On the way Jesus turned to two of his friends and asked them to go on ahead and borrow a donkey. They were to bring it back to where they would all be waiting.
Some time later, the two friends arrived back, and a cloak was
put on the donkey’s back. Jesus then got on the donkey and rode
on the pathway toward the city of Jerusalem. His friends followed, wondering what was going to happen.
“Very soon,” said Jesus, “there is going to be a big parade and celebration. Just stay with me.”
Talk TimeDo you ever wonder about things? What?
Prayer TimeDear Jesus, you knew what was going to happen to you all along. I think it would have been so exciting to be with you on that parade. Amen.
Jesus in JerusalemBiBle TimeLuke 18:31–34
Don’t understandAs Jesus sat with all of his friends he began to speak to them. “Very soon,” he said, “we will be going to Jerusalem.”
All the disciples listened to him carefully. “And in Jerusalem,” continued Jesus, “some people who hate me will come for me. They won’t be very nice to me and will do horrible things. I will die, but,” said Jesus, “on the third day I will come alive again.”
The disciples didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about at all.
Talk TimeHas there ever been a time when you haven’t understood something? Did you ask a parent or friend to explain?
Prayer TimeDear Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me parents, friends, and other people I can talk to when I have a problem. Amen.

Land to live on
When they finally capture the land Joshua decides how it
is to be divided up among the great families – the tribes
of Israel. They no longer need to live as nomads. They can
farm the land.
A reminder of the covenant
The years go by. When Joshua is very old he calls the
people together to remind them of the terms of the
covenant: God’s promise to give them the land of Canaan
and the promise they made to obey the Law. Joshua said:
Now then… honour the Lord and serve him sincerely and
faithfully. Get rid of the gods which your ancestors used
to worship in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve only
the Lord. If you are not willing to serve him, decide today
whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors worshipped
in Mesopotamia or the gods of the Amorites, in whose
land you are now living. As for my family and me, we
will serve the Lord.

Egyptians make papyrus from reeds grown near the River Nile.
Papyrus
Even before the pyramids were built,
the ancient Egyptians had learned to
make papyrus “paper” from the inner
stalk (pith) of papyrus reeds that grew in
marshy areas. (The English word “paper”
comes from the name “papyrus”.)
The thick, damp stems were laid out
in rows on top of each other and beaten
until they melded into a flat writing
surface. When this sheet had dried in the
sun, it could be used for writing on.
Papyrus was expensive to make but it
could be re-used by washing or scraping.
Egyptians made brush-pens from
reeds. They made their ink from plants
and other natural pigments, such as
malachite and yellow ochre.
Clay tablets
The ancient Babylonians shaped clay into
thin, flat, rectangular bricks for writing.
Words were pressed into the soft clay
with a wedge-shaped stylus. The clay was
then baked in the sun to harden.
Archaeologists have discovered whole
“libraries” of these clay writing tablets.
Stone tablet
The first permanent writing surface was
stone. In the Bible, the first time that
writing is mentioned is when the Ten
Commandments were written on stone.
The first “pen” was a chisel!
Waxed boards
The Assyrians, Greeks, and Romans all
used writing boards made from pieces
of wood, or ivory covered with wax.
Sometimes two boards were hinged
together. Any pointed stick could be used as a
pen.
Hinged boards with wax-covered writing surfaces.

St Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai Peninisula, where Constantine Tischendorf discovered the Codex Sinaiticus.
The nineteenth- century Bible scholar Constantine Tischendorf (1815–74).
Scrolls were cumbersome to carry. Also, it
could take time to find a particular Bible
passage on a long scroll. In the second century ad, Christian
leaders collected together the books of the
New Testament. Instead of using a scroll,
they hit on the idea of collecting together
several sheets of papyrus or parchment,
folding them in half, sewing along the fold,
and adding more folded sheets.
This forerunner of the modern “book”
was sometimes also given a hard cover.
This early type of book was called a “codex”
(plural codices). The book, more or less as we know it, had
arrived!
The First BooksThe Codex Sinaiticus, the earliest complete manuscript of the New Testament we have today. It was bound as a book, or “codex”.
A page from the Codex Sinaiticus.
The oldest New TestamentThe earliest surviving complete copy of
New Testament was written not long
after ad 300. In 1844 a German scholar called
Constantine Tischendorf was exploring
the remote and ancient monastery of
St Catherine, in the Sinai Desert, Egypt.
There he discovered some parchments
with early Greek writing. They turned
out to be part of the Old Testament,
dating to the fourth century ad.
Excited by his discovery, Tischendorf
returned to the monastery to see if
he could find any more manuscripts.
Eventually he found parchment sheets
that made up almost the whole Bible.
The manuscript Tischendorf found
is known as Codex Sinaiticus because it
was found at the foot of Mount Sinai. It
is preserved today in the British Library,
London.
Other important early manuscripts
of the Bible in Greek include the Codex
Alexandrinus, also in London’s British
Library, and the Codex Vaticanus, now in
the Vatican Library, Rome.
These early manuscripts are vital for
scholars, who can check that the text
that is used to translate modern Bibles
is identical to the text known by the
early Christians. By comparing different
manuscripts, they
can see where copyists’ mistakes,
or well-meaning “improvements’, may have altered
the original words.

Jericho and the conquestJoshua makes plans for the invasion of Canaan. The first city they reach is Jericho (Joshua 5:13 – 6:27). The people see that it is strongly defended and they lose heart. God tells Joshua to march in procession round the city for six days. Part of the procession is the ark of the covenant, carried by priests. It is a sign that God’s laws are central to the Israelite campaign.
The seventh day of marching is the final one. With trumpets sounding, and on a sign from Joshua, the people give a great shout. The city walls fall down. It is the first of many miracles that enable Joshua to lead the people to victory.
JOSHUAThe book of Joshua continues the story of the people of Israel after the death of Moses. Under his leadership they prepare to enter Canaan and then make it their home.
Obeying the LawGod makes this promise to Joshua:
Just be determined, be confident; and make sure that you obey the whole Law that my servant Moses gave you. Do not neglect any part of it and you will succeed wherever you go.Joshua 1:7
The meaning of the nameJoshua is a name based on one of the names of God in the Bible – Yahweh. Joshua itself means “Yahweh is salvation”. Several Bible people had this name, the Hebrew form of which can be written as “Yeshua”. One of those people named Yeshua is known to Christians today as Jesus.
