I am once again delighted to be

playing host to such a wonderful

variety of quality shows here at

the New Theatre. We are thrilled

to welcome the stunning

Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker!,

the outrageous Avenue Q and

the West End smash-hit Legally

Blonde to Oxford for the first

time. It is also lovely to welcome

Oxford Operatic Society

(Thoroughly Modern Millie) and

UK Productions (42nd Street)

back to the New Theatre.

Midnight Tango played an

almost sell-out week with us

in 2011 so I would advise early

booking for Vincent and Flavia’s

return visit in July. December

is set to be an exciting month at

the theatre as we play host to

Dolly Parton’s brand new musical

9 to 5 and for Christmas we have

WELCOMEthe return of Andrew Lloyd

Webber’s Starlight Express.

We also have the usual fantastic

selection of concerts, comedy,

family shows, opera and dance -

something for everyone.

There’s also our exclusive

membership scheme ATG

Theatre Card which boasts

a number of theatre (and

non-theatre) benefits. Our

members pay no booking fees

on most shows, receive priority

show notifications, discounted

tickets and 10% discount at

the bar. These benefits can

be enjoyed in all 39 of the

ATG theatres nationwide.

If you want to enhance your

theatre experience further, why

not come along on one of our

Backstage Tours? These are run

on a Saturday morning, and

offer you the opportunity to

see behind the scenes and

visit lots of areas not usually

accessible to the general public.

Sometimes there is also the

chance to have a close up look

at the set for whichever show

is on stage that week. Visit

the website for dates, times

and prices.

Our Club Lounge VIP Experience

is proving extremely popular

already this year. If you haven’t

visited our glass enclosed

area in the stalls bar, why not

upgrade your next visit and

make it even more special?

More details and online booking

available on the website.

We also have opportunities

for room hire and corporate

entertaining. We can create

packages to suit your needs -

just email jamiebaskeyfield@

theambassadors.com with your

requirements and we can put

a proposal together for you.

On behalf of my team, I look

forward to seeing you at a

performance at the New

Theatre and trust you will

have a very enjoyable

experience!

DIRECTED BY PHIL CLARK

We all want to meet people from history. The trouble is everyone

is dead! So it’s time to prepare yourselves for Horrible Histories

live on stage! Using actors and ground-breaking 3D special effects,

these two astounding shows - Terrible Tudors and Vile Victorians -

are guaranteed to thrill you and your children. Historical figures and

events will come alive on stage and hover at your fingertips.

TERRIBLE TUDORSFrom the horrible Henries to the end of evil Elizabeth, hear the

legends (and the lies!) about the torturing Tudors. Find out the

fate of Henry’s headless wives and his punch up with the Pope.

Survive the Spanish Armada as it sails into the audience!

VILE VICTORIANSWhat exactly did a baby farmer do? Can you escape the misery of

the mines or the filth of the factories? Do your best to dodge the

rotten railway and prepare for the Charge of the Light Brigade!

One of the most popular dance productions ever staged in the UK,

Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! makes its first visit to the New

Theatre Oxford to celebrate its 20th anniversary for one week only.

This delicious theatrical feast has family-sized helpings of

Matthew Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy.

Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously

bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage, through a shimmering,

ice-skating winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy

kingdom of Sweetieland.

Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and Anthony Ward’s unforgettable

sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create

a fresh and charmingly irreverent interpretation of the

traditional favourite.

Hailed by The Observer as ‘THE UNDISPUTED KING OF DANCE THEATRE’, Matthew Bourne’s company New Adventures has

produced some of the most successful dance productions of the

last two decades including Swan Lake, Edward Scissorhands

and last year’s sell-out hit, Cinderella.

‘Q STANDS FOR QUITE SIMPLY THE BEST SHOW IN TOWN. GO NOW AND GO AGAIN AND AGAIN’ SKY NEWS

‘THE FUNNIEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN’ KISS FM

BANNER

After nearly five years of mischief, bad behaviour and

political incorrectness, London’s funniest show by far is hitting

the road. The Tony Award winning Avenue Q is the irresistibly

charming musical about the lovably hopeless characters on a

downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning

issues: love, work, relationships and, above all, just how are

you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English?

Hilarious and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch

of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers

and puppets, Avenue Q is a musical like no other. So don’t

let your life suck - book your tickets today!

THOROUGHLY MADCAP FUN!

Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady

Based on the popular movie, the stage version of

Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new

songs and bright dance numbers.

A FUSION OF STREET DANCE, ACROBATICS AND BALLET

FLAWLESS and

ENGLISH NATIONAL BALLET in

AGAINST TIMESTREETDANCE GOES CLASSICAL

Against Time is a co-production between English National Ballet and

World Dance Management created by Flawless and Jenna Lee

This incredible partnership sees English National Ballet and

World Dance Champions Flawless in Against Time - a thrilling

fusion of streetdance, acrobatics and ballet.

The story follows the battle between the students of The

Academy of Excellence and an evil manipulator who plans to end

dance by stopping time. Four of the students set off on a quest

to stop him, and along the journey the boys from Flawless and

the ballerinas celebrate all that is great about dance in 2012.

Following a performance at the O2, Flawless and

English National Ballet collaborate again to generate

dance fireworks.

‘MURDER, GREED, CORRUPTION, EXPLOITATION, ADULTERY AND TREACHERY - ALL THOSE THINGS WE HOLD NEAR AND DEAR TO OUR HEARTS.’ So begins the international

award winning musical, Chicago.

Based on real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub

singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and along with Cell Block rival,

double-murderess Velma Kelly, they fight to keep from death row

with the help of smooth-talking lawyer, Billy Flynn.

Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb

and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy

score includes All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle. With 6 Tony, 2

Olivier, 1 Grammy, 2 Bafta and 6 Academy Awards, Chicago truly is

‘THE SHARPEST, SLICKEST SHOW ON THE BLOCK’ THE TIMES

A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer

and a cell block of sin: it would be a crime to miss it.

THE SEXY, SASSY WEST END SMASH HIT RETURNS

22

Page 24: New Theatre Oxford Summer 2012

9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL is a hilarious new musical comedy, based

on the hit movie and centres on three office workers who turn the

tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss.

They conspire to take control of the company and learn there’s

nothing they can’t do - even in a man’s world. Outrageous, thought-

provoking and even a little romantic, 9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL is

about teaming up and taking care of business.

FEISTY, FUN AND OH SO FABULOUS! This show features

Dolly Parton’s original hit title song, 9 to 5 which won her an Oscar

nomination and 4 Grammy Award nominations along with her new

Tony® and Grammy nominated score. With 18 original numbers,

including Backwoods Barbie and Shine Like the Sun, that mix Broadway

and pop with Dolly’s signature witty lyrics, it will have you kicking

up your heels. Leave your daily grind behind and join in on the fun.

FRIENDSHIP, GOSSIP, POISON, MURDER? THESE GIRLS HAVE ALL OF THE FUN!
