What is

Assessment?

The class

discussed

what

constitutes

assessment.

Page 4: New Syllabus Mathematics Seminar 5 Oct

What is

Assessment? • collecting data

• interpreting data

about students’ ability in

and attitude towards a

particular subject

Page 5: New Syllabus Mathematics Seminar 5 Oct

Basic Skill

• ability

• do students know

basic skills and

concepts?

Page 6: New Syllabus Mathematics Seminar 5 Oct

Familiar

Application • ability

• can student apply

basic skills and

concepts to familiar

situations?

Unfamiliar or

Complex

Application • ability

• can student apply

basic skills and

concepts to

unfamiliar / complex

situations?

Formative

Assessment Assessment for Learning

Assessment to help

teachers modify teaching

plans so as to help

students achieve learning

goals.

This may not result is a

numerical score.

Summative

Assessment Assessment of Learning

Assessment to provide a

summary of student

learning up to a

particular point.

This is typically reported

as a grade or numerical

score.

Part 1 – Anchor Task

• Can (struggling) students

substitute and evaluate

expressions?

• Can (advanced) students

propose a general method?

• Can students communicate

(oral and written)?

Six-Item

Homework

Format Two homework items based

on the very same type of

tasks discussed – e.g. given

points, find distance.

Students know that they are

expected to be able to do

this confidently.

Two homework items which are

direct applications – e.g. given

the distance between two points

are (0, k) and (k, 0) is 10 units,

find the value(s) of k. The anchor

task does not deal with this.

Six-Item

Homework

Format Two homework items which

are unusual or complex

applications.

Assessment is

not limited to

Teacher

Assessment

Teacher Assessment

Self Assessment

Peer Assessment

Page 22: New Syllabus Mathematics Seminar 5 Oct

What is

important to

assess? Ability to perform

mathematical skills

Ability to apply to various

situations including unusual ones

Ability to communicate

Ability to collaborate

Three-Point

Report John can do … but is

unable to do …

What I plan to do with John is

Perhaps, at home you can

support by ….

Summary

Today, we discussed the use of Anchor

Tasks to facilitate assessment. We also

recommend the use of Student Journal.

The Six-Items Homework format is

another assessment tool discussed. For

summative assessment, Table of

Specifications ensure the design of

comparable tests. The Three-Point Report

provides parents with the information

they need.

There are many past-year Question Papers with Mark Scheme for

various examinations including GCSE and subjects at this site.

Many examples of well-set summative assessment items for use in tests

and examinations. Also serve as good guide to phrasing examination

questions is a clear manner.
