Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On Sunday, May 19, we gathered for our “Day of Discernment” to consider a series

of goals that will guide the life and ministry of Hope Lutheran Church for the next 3-5

years. The goals we identified and then endorsed by the Congregational Council at

its May meeting are now being forwarded to the Annual Congregational Meeting, on

June 2 (following the 10:15 am worship service) for consideration and

adoption. The goals and a sample action item for goal are listed below. The final

action items will be developed by the Strategic Planning Team and the

Congregational Council over the summer. They will assign a timeline for when

specific action items will be completed and which team/committee/staff person will be

responsible for implementing the action item by the specified target date.

Creating a better sense of community by developing opportunities for all partners to have

engaging fellowship experiences.

Creating a monthly fellowship event.

Provide programs and resources to feed our faith development at every stage of life’s

journey.

Develop stepping stones for all ages and groups beyond confirmation.

Implement processes to assure that all who enter the doors of Hope Lutheran feel

welcomed, invited and are encouraged to participate in parish activities.

Expand and train greeting teams members to establish a greeting process and

utilize our “Welcome Center” more effectively.

Engage and support all partners to respond generously of their time, talents, and

treasures towards meeting the needs of others.

Identify a broad base of talent and resources.

Outreach to the community through service and mission trips.

Increase the numbers of partners who pledge and tithe so Hope Lutheran will fulfill its

mission and strategic plan as a fiscally healthy congregation.

Annually offer Financial Peace University.

I believe these goals, if adopted, will provide a path to where we at Hope Lutheran Church feel the

Holy Spirit is calling us to focus our ministry and service. The full strategic plan with a complete set

of action items for each goal is targeted to be shared with the congregation

by the end of summer.

Frederick Frey Appointed

Director of the Chancel Choir

The congregation welcomes Dr. Frederick Frey as the new Director of the

Chancel Choir. Fred assumes the directorship after Erick Funk

resigned to concentrate more of his time on his teaching and

performing duties.

FREDERICK FREY, baritone, a recent transplant to Bozeman from the

Metro New York City area, is acclaimed by critics and audiences alike

wherever, whenever and whatever he performs. His musicality, sensitivity

and dramatic style excited audiences throughout North America and Europe. Besides the

standard opera and oratorio repertoire, engagements have included a number of World Premier

performances including that of Eric Funk’s opera Pamelia at Carnegie Hall, Anton Coppola’s opera

Sacco and Vanzetti at the Tampa Bay Opera, and Antonia Braga’s opera 1492 in Santo

Domingo. He has performed with a number of outstanding singers, as well, including Kristian

Johannsson, Gail Robinson, Eric Halfvorson, Barbara Daniels, George Grey, Jerome Hines, Pablo

Elvira, Maria Spacagna, James King, Werner Klemperer and Janet Bookspan. On a lighter note,

he has participated as a judge in the Miss New York State and Miss Ohio pageants of the Miss

America Program.

Frey holds a Doctor of Music degree in vocal performance from Northwestern University. He has

studied conducting with Merle Williams, Paul Christiansen, Grieg Fountain and Margaret Hillis He

began his conducting career at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and extended it

through churches and colleges in Ohio and New Jersey. Most recently, he was the Music Director

for The Montana TheatreWorks productions of White Christmas, Guys and Dolls and A

Christmas Carol at The Ellen Theatre here in Bozeman.

Between his opera, concert, research and conducting engagements, Dr. Frey teaches voice

students at his home in Bozeman.
