PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to 2015 and back to another year of opportunities and making a difference for our school communities across the state. I hope you all had a fun and relaxing break and feel rested and ready to face the many and varied challenges that lie ahead. I encourage you to support and get involved with your local network and have professional conversations with your colleagues.

A special welcome to all new Deputy Principals in 2015. The numbers of colleagues new to the position has grown considerably over the past few years. Please remember, that if you do need a hand or advice, don’t hesitate to contact another deputy for support. Col Ekert (0403314497) who is our association Executive Officer is also a great source of information and if he is unable to assist you, he will certainly be able to direct you to someone who can.

Business Partnerships Manager David Herring attended the NSWSDPA Executive meeting on 5 February to present and formalise the sponsorship agreement between Teachers Mutual Bank (TMB) and the NSWSDPA. Funds from this sponsorship agreement will impact directly on the wellbeing of Deputy Principals across the state by providing for relief days for schools impacted by disasters and also by providing funds for travel expenses for remote Deputy Principals to attend the NSWSDPA State Conference, and to assist the Wellbeing Officer Steve Barnett to travel to rural and remote areas.

Our new NSWSDPA Website was launched on 27 January. The members area of our new website promises to be very helpful for Deputy Principals as does the @DPConnect email thread which is already impacting by increasing the communication between Deputy Principals, allowing the sharing of ideas and therefore easing the workload of Deputy Principals. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT - DP Welfare

At the recent State Executive Meeting three key wellbeing issues were discussed. Two of these were raised in our meeting with Greg Prior and Debbie Hocking. Both were given a good hearing and remain open for further discussion. The first was around the Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey in which the executive encouraged DP’s to register and participate. We provided the Executive Summary of the report findings and discussed the key elements of those findings. This is a longitudinal study of senior school executives in all states: public and private; primary and secondary; principals, DP’s and AP’s. The similarities in the health and wellbeing implications of the work of senior school executives are remarkable. The findings align closely to claims data of the reports major sponsor, Teachers Health. DP’s are encouraged to read the Survey Report and to participate in the next iteration of the survey: your responses will contribute to the aggregate data and you will receive a personal profile of your health and wellbeing. Here’s the link: http://www.principalhealth.org/ Click on the Australian flag and go to reports. If you completed the survey last year but were unaware a personal profile was available you will also find an email contact on the page above that will provide you with access to your profile.

Page 4: New South Wales Secondary Deputy Principals …nswsdpa.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/NSWSDPA...New South Wales Secondary Deputy Principals Association Inc. Website: Newsletter:

The second issue was around a more proactive approach to staff and student wellbeing, specifically mindfulness, but also positive psychology and resilience. Some of the teacher practitioners who have developed mindfulness programs and presented at schools and executive conferences have been collaborating to develop a draft of a mindfulness program schools can implement using the Smiling Mind Apps even if they do not have access to local practitioners. Again, the response was positive. Stay tuned for further developments. The third issue was around ongoing support for the wellbeing of DP’s, particularly those experiencing specific situations that are having a particularly negative effect on their wellbeing. This is of course the area in which our Wellbeing Officer provides the primary support role. Steve Barnett has now taken up that position following the retirement of Association legend Barry Lovegrove. At the State Congress in Term 4 last year there was strong support for the development of a network of retired DP’s to support the work of our Wellbeing Officer, particularly where ‘on-the-ground, in person’ support would be beneficial and the Wellbeing Officer is unable to provide that support (for any number of reasons) in a timely manner. While a formal policy/procedure remains a work-in-progress a number of people have already put their names forward and some have been able to assist Barry / Steve. If you are recently retired, or approaching that particular milestone, have been active in your local network and are interested in assisting from time to time if needed, you can register your interest with Steve at [email protected] Ian Walker Vice President Well- Being

WEBPAGE COORDINATOR REPORT

Two exciting technology initiatives are proving beneficial in supporting our Association. They are includes: 1) OUR ASSOCIATION WEBSITE - Our Association website launched on 27/1/15 and can be found at http://nswsdpa.asn.au/ Over the past two weeks, financial members have been added to the members section of the site. This part of the website contains a range of professional learning resources and contact pages to support NSW DP's. It is a page that will grow and improve over time. Please remember, your username to log into the members section ( http://nswsdpa.asn.au/members-login/) is your DEC user i.d and the generic password is nswsdpa. Members can change their password if you wish. 2) @DPConnect - our email thread conversation connecting members of the NSWSDPA. This is a shared discussion line that has been set up for members to exchange information, ideas and requests for assistance about professional matters. It is proving a great hit! Sending a message is easy. To post to @DPconnect, write your email, remember to title your message, write in the "to" email section [email protected] and then press send.

I would like to thank everyone for their patience during the set-up phase of these initiatives. I again encourage DP's to be current financial members to take full advantage of our Association website and @DPConnect. Please contact Tony Diaczok if you wish to check your membership status and please contact Belinda Giudice for Association technology enquiries.
