Back from Retreat! I had a great time on retreat. I went to the desert north of Phoenix for 8 days in silence where the only times I spoke were during Mass and at a spiritual direction meeting once a day. Even though we were asked to pray 4 hours each day, there were many hours left in the day. I wasn’t bored for a moment, however, as I filled up the day with hiking, exercising, reading, and playing music in the retreat chapel.
There are 300 days of clear skies each year in the Phoenix area. Temperatures got into the high 90’s by the afternoon, but dawn and dusk were much milder. One aspect of the climate fascinated me: the dryness. Life without humidity looks a little different. Imagine having a cold glass of water on your kitchen table without any beads of water forming. I couldn’t believe my hands. When I first poured cold water in a glass, I had to touch the glass every 5 minutes to be sure that it was still cool and dry.
Now for the spiritual aspect of the retreat. A few themes came up in prayer again and again: the Lord’s infinitely intimate love, trust in the Lord, and peace in the midst of the storms. Perhaps to speak of a relationship with God as “intimate” is unusual. We typically use “intimate” to describe the relationship between spouses. While we may feel uncomfortable with that word, the Lord isn’t afraid to get so close to us. On retreat, I prayed with Psalm 131 which describes trust as a child resting in his mother’s lap. What a comforting image!
A passage that spoke volumes to me was our Gospel from Pentecost, John 20:19-23. The Church has interpreted this as an encounter of the Risen Christ with the 11 Apostles and their commissioning to forgive and retain sins, especially in Confession. I had three different scenes that came to me in prayer. In one scene, I brought the weight of scandal in the Church to prayer. There were many clerics present in the room when Jesus came. These priests and bishops represented the betrayals that occurred in the last 75 years in the US: preaching heresy, fostering dissent, abuse and cover up of abuse. Jesus prayed forgiveness over this group. In another scene, I was gathered with the priests of our diocese. There were many locks on the door, representing different fears (e.g., fear of false accusation, fear of the work load increasing due to a priest dying or leaving active ministry). Jesus came in the room and said again and again to each of these fears, “Peace.” Finally, I imagined that I was alone in the upper room when Jesus appeared. I shared with Him all my personal fears, and He showed His wounds again and again as if to say, “Place your fears into my wounds.”
Needless to say, I feel invigorated and refreshed. I hope to participate in this or a similar retreat next year. Thanks for your prayers!
Peace,Fr. Matthew
