Uno dei temi principali all’ultima edizione
One of the main themes at the
last Consumer Electronics
Show in Las Vegas, the most impor-
tant international event for the elec-
tronics industry, was the increasing
popularity of streaming video over
the Internet. This is certainly not a
new phenomenon, with many dif-
ferent events being broadcast live
online. However in the USA thephenomenon is becoming quite sig-
nicant, as an increasing number of
families now prefers to watch pro-
grams online rather than those offered
by cable TV and broadcast networks.
According to a survey by Parks As-
sociates, the number of users who
connected online to watch lms or
programs increased by 20% between
the end of 2011 and the start of 2012,
the peak TV ratings season. It’s nocoincidence that the major American

networks such as MTV, Turner, Dis-covery and DirectTV, as well as on-
line services such as Netix, Amazon
and YouTube, have holdings or their
own structures dedicated solely to the
development of streamed programs.
As well as these major players, a mul-
titude of smaller operators has also
taken advantage of the almost non-
existent entry barriers on the Internet
to create programs or start their own
themed channels. Itinerant showsare certainly not excluded from such
technologies, and dissemination and
training activities may potentially
become the main content providers
and, consequently, create new forms
of revenue.
At the Guggenheim Museum in
New York, for example, since 1984,
through the Works & Process initia-
tive (WP), performing art fans can
pay extra to go behind the scenes of
current productions, talk to the art-
ists and watch rehearsals. Recently,
Work & Process has started stream-
ing over the Ustream platform, and
subscribers to this service can watchinterviews, get extra information on
the contents and rehearsals. The num-
ber of online visitors has already sur-
passed the 90,000 mark, a signicant
number considering that physical at-
tendance at these events is generally
limited to just a few hundred people
in the museum’s theatre.
In Washington, on the other hand,
the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at
the Smithsonian Institution has theworld’s most sophisticated collec-
tion of Asian ceramics. These are
elegantly presented and enhanced
by detailed presentations by inter-
national experts. The limited space
means not all the works can be put on
display, however temporary exposi-
tions are set up periodically. Until the
end of November 2011, for example,
visitors could see ‘Taking Shape: Ce-
ramics in Southeast Asia’, a journey
through the production, use and trade
of ceramics from Vietnam, Cambo-
dia, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar
spanning over 4,000 years of history.

In May 2013, not far from the Gröna Lund
park in Stockholm, the Abba Museum will
open, dedicated to the famous Swedish
group pop, illustrating their amazing career
from 1970 to 1983. Promoters include Björn
Ulvaeus (on the left), one of the two men in
the group. The museum’s content, as well
as the visitor experiences, will be streamed over the Internet.

These pieces have now returned to
storage, however enthusiasts can still
study them by browsing a huge online
catalogue on the museum’s website,
with multimedia presentations, il-
lustrations and academic texts. This
has transformed the collection into a
point of reference for academics in
the sector, who can also meet online
to discuss new theories or discover-
ies, with a global audience.
In Europe too there are several cas-
es. The most recent one involves the
Natural History Museum in London,
which will stream its exhibitions to a
worldwide public. The museum is not
new to such online events, howeveruntil now had used a webcam system
to broadcast to a smaller audience,
including academics and govern-
ment institutions. To reach a global
audience with constantly high quality
video, the museum uses Innite HD
by OctoShape. Indeed, the same tech-
nology is used in several countries to
stream the football matches in nation-
al and international tournaments.
In Stockholm, on the other hand, starting next May visitors to Gröna
Lund, the city’s main amusement
park, will also be able to see the new
Abba: The Museum, homage to the
famous Swedish pop group from the
seventies, to be opened on Djurgården
island, right in front of the park. The
project has been on the table for
years, above all due to the high de-
mand from tourists who every year
contact the tourism board for itinerar-ies relating to the Swedish group, just
like London and Liverpool have done
for the Beatles. The museum will be
developed with the involvement of

Björn Ulvaeus, one of the group’s
members, and a further 3 investors,
one of whom is Parks & Resorts Scan-
dinavia. The museum will be show-
ing stage costumes, instruments, the
group’s scores, and pictures of when
the 4 members were also partners in
their outside lives. Then there will beinterviews, songs to listen to, videos
of the group on tour. Some of the con-
tent will also be made available to the
public online.
Visitors to the museum will, for
example, receive a ticket with a code
to create a web page on the museum’s
website, which is then accessible to
anyone. The visitor’s path will be
lmed, including the music and, op-
tionally, this content can be streamedor embedded in the visitor’s social
network prole. Signs that the cen-
tre will be an economic success are
already clear: rst of all the admis-
sion price will be around 30 dollars,
no small sum. Moreover the music
will be streamed on Spotify, the main
music streaming service in Sweden.
They in turn will establish partner-
ships with sponsor companies. The
fact that one of the founders of thegroup is involved is also reason for
optimism. Björn Ulvaeus, who has a
degree in law and economics, has al-
ways been the group’s manager. After

of ‘Mamma Mia!’, a lm that cost
around 50 million dollars to make and
has taken more than 600 million.
While the contents of national
museums such as those in London
or Stockholm need sophisticated
and expensive services to continu-ously broadcast high quality video
and audio, it is also true that smaller
structures can use more economical
products to exploit current trends. On
Ustream, for example, visitors can al-
ready access different live webcams
focused on various animals, such
as eagles, birds and deer to observe
their behaviour in their natural envi-
ronment, and some of these have had
more than 5 million hits. This demon-strates that zoos and nature parks can
also use webcams to broadcast im-
ages from their structures. Some are
already doing this, such as the Atlanta
zoo, which broadcasts images of its
pandas via webcam.
Affordable webcams can be used
in combination with Skype to commu-
nicate with audiences for structures
with limited budgets, such as schools.
Many authors of children’s books, for
example, use Skype to interact with
students. There are advantages for
both sides. On one hand, schools can
engage known personalities eitherfree-of-charge or for a small fee. On
the other hand, the authors sell more
books, given that often the schools
add the author’s book to the curricu-
lum. Famous Skype users include
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry
Potter saga, who periodically par-
ticipates in live webcasts from Edin-
burgh, Scotland, with an audience of
students and teachers. In some cases,
audience numbers have exceeded onemillion. If just a small percentage of
these people buy a Harry Potter book
or go to the Wizarding World of Har-
ry Potter in Orlando or the Warner
