About theoryofknowledge.net theoryofknowledge.net was set up in 2009 by Michael Dunn, a Cambridge and Edinburgh-educated History and TOK teacher. Initially just a small home-made website, it quickly grew to become the most popular online resource for TOK in the world. It now comprises a free 200 page website accessed by up to 5500 users every day, an Android and iOS mobile app, a newsletter that is sent out in 2 versions to nearly 10,000 subscribers worldwide, a range of social media resources, and a range of teaching resources that have been purchased by individuals and schools in over 750 towns and cities in more than 100 countries around the world. This means that theoryofknowledge.net’s ideas and strategies are an integral part of the learning process for thousands of IB Diploma students globally. Michael collaborates with some of the most respected institutions and educators in international education, such as Cambridge University Press, for whom he leads PD workshops, co-develops resources, and writes blogs, and Sue Bastian, one of the architects of TOK, and with whom he co-writes the TOK essay guide for teachers. For all questions and queries about our resources and support services, please email Michael at [email protected]. He will respond within 24 hours to all product enquiries. All the resources listed here are described in more detail on the website.

TOK Essay Guide: May 2016 edition Release date: 30th September 2015 Price: $34.99 for the teacher’s edition (co-written with Sue Bastian), $9.99 for the student’s edition Our new essay guide offers the same guidelines for writing the essay as our previous edition (for November 2015). Whilst previous editions of the essay guide have included advice on the session-specific prescribed titles, we now offer thoughts and points based on examiner’s reports for TOKs from the latest exam sessions instead. The teacher version of the guide is co-written with Sue Bastian, and contains extra sections on how to prepare students for the essay writing process.

TED Companion Pack 2 Release date: 1st November 2015 Price: $34.99 Our first TED Companion Pack, produced with the blessing of the TED organisation, presented 60 TOK-relevant TED talks alongside a set of questions for each one, and links to specific ways of knowing and areas of knowledge. The TED Companion 2 follows the same format, and shares the aim of engaging students in the most important intellectual and social debates raging in the world today. It presents 45 brilliant new talks, amongst them, Thomas Piketty, Hans Rosling, Steven Pinker, and Jared Diamond.

Great Minds on TOK Release date: 10th January 2016 Price: $34.99 Great Minds on TOK is a new resource for theoryofknowledge.net that presents 40 of the most influential philosophers, scientists, and key thinkers from history in a TOK-related way. Students are often engaged by philosophers, and keen to incorporate their ideas in essays and presentations, but all too often this takes a rather predictable and descriptive format. So, instead of a précis of deontology according to Kant, or a description of utilitarianism as laid down by Mill, we invite students to consider how Spinoza linked mathematics to religion, why Wittgenstein regarded philosophical problems as being related to language, and how William of Ockham established one of the most important rules for reasoning back in the early 14th century. The resource provides a short background on the different thinkers, a consideration of how their key ideas are relevant to TOK, and suggestions on how to explore their lives and legacies in more detail.

TOK Sessions Pack: The new sessions pack Release date: 1st March 2016 Price: $69.99 The new TOK Sessions Pack provides 60 new lesson plans with an emphasis on real life situations and the identification and exploration of knowledge questions. Similarly to the first TOK Sessions pack, we offer material on all the different elements of the TOK syllabus, providing diverse learning strategies, and suggestions for follow up activities and discussions. The pack included a teacher guide that explains the aim, and how to deliver each session, handouts for students, and a range of PowerPoints and other electronic resources to accompany the classes.

Premium TOK newsletter Released at the end of every month Price: from $96.00 per year The Premium TOK Newsletter is the most engaging and topical resource for TOK currently available. It offers a monthly consideration of 15 different real life situations, 5 additional ‘quick’ stories, a focus on a particular aspect of TOK (such as a way of knowing, area of knowledge, or knowledge debate), and tips on the essay and presentation. Our RLSs include articles, videos, blogs, and podcasts, all designed to engage your students, and get them thinking about related knowledge questions, as well as different perspectives that can be applied to each one, and their implications and significance.

Seminars and workshops Events arranged throughout the year In association with Cambridge University Press, and independently, Michael offers a range of in-school and online TOK seminars and workshops for IB students and teachers. These events are designed to fit in with the requirements of your school, either to introduce or consolidate the skills required for a solid understanding of theory of knowledge. If you’d like him to kick-off TOK with your students or teachers, explain why it provides such a great preparation for understanding and interacting with the world, get them thinking about a particular aspect of the course, or outline strategies to integrate it with the rest of your IB Diploma teaching, he will do so in a clear, jargon-free, and engaging way. Email Michael for a full listing of events customized to your school’s needs – these can range from a short hour-long talk, or a whole day interactive seminar.
