Core question: how to tailor the performance (functionality and integrity) of high strength steel components through laser and arcadditive manufacturing?

TAiloring of high PERformance parts through laser and arc additive manufacturing TECHhnologies: TAPERTECH

Objective: To develop the knowledge needed for industrial application of the technologies embraced by DED-AM (Directed EnergyDeposition Additive Manufacturing), especially using LMDp (Laser Metal Deposition with Powder) and WAAM (Wire + Arc AdditiveManufacturing) processes, to tailor the performance of high strength steel components.

Duration: September 2019 to August 2022

• Need from Industry: Better understanding of mechanisms and welding recommendations for avoiding embrittlement in welds of highly alloyed duplex stainless steel. Cost effective methods for microstructure and property characterization and mapping.

• Research questions: How do spinodal decomposition resulting in embrittlement depend on composition and thermal cycles experienced during welding and/or heat treatment for duplex stainless steels and weld metals.

• Goal: Defining welding parameter window ensuring 475°C embrittlement is avoided. Production of TTT, CCT and property diagrams for base material and weld metal.
