In 2018, when Omnivore Recordings released The Choir’s first full length platter in the group’s history, no one knew what impact the release of that recording would have. Sure, the group, in its many different manifestations during the ’60s, had released several singles, including a Top 10 smash (“It’s Cold Outside”) in the group’s hometown of Cleveland. The song would reach #68 on the Billboard national charts. But the garage rock band whose many different members went on to form other important bands like Raspberries and James Gang, had never made an album of their own before, just assorted singles from 1966–1968.

So 50 years on, when the tapes of an aborted album were found, mixed and released as Artifact: The Unreleased Album to unanimous critical acclaim, the 1968 version of The Choir suddenly found itself back in the limelight with a weighty decision . . . to reclaim their vision and perform live . . . back where they came from, the home of rock ’n’ roll, Cleveland, Ohio.

Omnivore Recordings is proud to announce the release of Last Call: Live at The Music Box, The Choir’s 50th anniversary performance captured live at Cleveland’s Music Box the night of Sept-ember 20, 2019. The band plays perfect renditions of material from Artifact as well as dipping into their deep bag of influences. Hear dynamite ver-sions of songs by Procol Harum, Billy Preston, Spooky Tooth, The Nice, The Kinks, Bob Seger and yes, even a cover of Jimmy Webb’s grandiose epic “MacArthur Park.” The band even rearranges their 1966 hit “It’s Cold Outside” to reflect the current musical makeup of the group which includes Ken Margolis (keyboards), Phil Giallombardo (organ), Randy Klawon (guitars), Denny Carleton (bass) and Jim Bonfanti (drums).

In the ’50s they were among the greatest of the post-war gospel groups. The ’60s found them recording for a variety of labels like Vee-Jay, Riverside, Epic, and ultimately Stax, pioneering the “soul folk” sound. By the end of the decade, they were becoming the soul music superstars they’re most widely known as now.

During the ’70s, they placed 13 singles on the U.S. Pop Chart and 20 on the U.S. R&B Chart. Besides recording, touring and chasing songs up the charts, the group also found time to not only appear in music-related motion pictures like Wattstax (1972) and The Band’s The Last Waltz (1976), but they also contributed to the Sidney Poitier-directed film sound track, Let’s Do It Again with music produced by Curtis Mayfield. This, their first post-Stax effort, sent the title track, “Let’s Do It Again,” to the number one spot on both the Pop and R&B charts.

Though the hits slowed after the mid-’70s, they did have a number 5 dance chart hit with a cover of the Talking Heads song, “Slippery People” in 1984. Mavis Staples had been releasing solo albums dating back to 1969’s self-titled effort on Stax, but started to pick up the release tempo and carry the family business forward with a pair of albums for the Paisley Park label under the direction of Prince in 1989 and 1993. She continues performing and releasing albums to this day, working with artists and producers like Ry Cooder, Jeff Tweedy, Arcade Fire, Gorillaz, and Ben Harper, among others.

The new edition features liner notes from Grammy®-Award winning author, Rob Bowman and all single edits as bonus tracks. SUMMARY

Growth, and the desire for eternal forward motion have been the concepts that have de�ned Make �em Su�er since the very beginning; and have been the foundations that led them from the world's most remote capital city Perth in Australia, to performing on stages around the world. As they have traversed previous eras, the �ve-piece have grown through the genres of deathcore, melodic death metal, & heavy metalcore; and as they continue on this path, look to be de�ned by nothing more than the label ‘creative’. �rough ‘Ether’, ’27’, and ‘Hollowed Heart’, the band has worked to shed themselves of the shackles of expectation, and as they look towards the open road that lies ahead of them, the light that guides the way has a name, ‘How To Survive A Funeral’. To assist in the rede�nition of every line the band is known for, Make �em Su�er enlisted the assistance of Drew Fulk A.K.A. WZRDBLD, who has worked with everyone from Motionless In White & Bullet For My Valentine, to Yelawolf & Lil’ Wayne. �e band travelled to LA to shack up at Fulk’s studio, the �rst time in their career working this closely with a producer, and the result is truly something unique in the current climate of heavy music. �e band’s fourth full length sees inspirations from their past and present sounds twisted together into a package that will de�ne Make �em Su�er’s place amongst their contemporaries as a truly creative act.
