NEW RECORDS OF PARASITIC MITES (ACARINA) FROM CUBA AND MEXICO

Results of the first Cuban-German ,,Alexander von Humbo1dt"-Expedition 1967/68, No. 5l)

BY

FRANTI~EK DUSBABEK

Eingegangen am 17. April 1969

During the Cuban-German expedition in Cuba and Mexico a small collection of mite parasites of some mammals was obtained and submitted to me for study. Eleven mite species were determined, from which 9 were collected from mammals captured in territory of Cuba, z in Mexico.

Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) dusbabeki CERNB, I 967

Material examined: 2 larvae from Molomix a h GEOFFR., Vera Cruz, Mexico, 23. 10.1967 -

This species is known only from Cuba and Isla de Pinos from the bats of the ge- nera ~l4olossus, Eptesicus, Noctilio and Artibeus (CERNP, 1967, FERN$ & DUSBABEK, 1967). The findings in Mexico are the first records made outside Cuba.

Spelaeorhynchus praecursor NEUMANN, 1902 Naterial examined: 4 females from Artibe~siumuicensis LEACH, El Beral(21' 5 7' N, 84' 3 3' W), Cuba, 25. 11. 1967; 17 females from the same host aiid locality, 26. 11. 1967 - all lgt. M. STUBBE.

This species has been recorded from Cuba already by PBREZ VIGUERAS (1956) and FAIN & al. (1967), mentioned also by SILVA TABOADA (1965) and DUSBABEK (1970). The species Spelaeorhynchus cubanus SANTOS DIAS, 195 8, described from terri- tory of Cuba is probably conspecific with the mentioned species.

igt. nr. STUBBE.

274 Mitt. Zool. MUS. Berlin, Bd. 46, Heft 2, 1970

Laelaps nuttalli HIRST, 1916

Material examined: 6 females from Rattus rat&$ (L.), Gupeyal (zoo 27‘ 48” N, 75’ 03’ 45” W’),

This species is recorded by DGSBABEK & ERN$ (1969) from Rattus ruttux (L.)

Cuba, 1 5 . I. 1968 - lgt. hf. STUBBE.

and Rattax noruegicas (ERxL.), captured in Havana.

Laelaps echidninus RERLESE, 1887

Material examined: 18 females from Rattus rattus (L,), Gupeyal (zoo 27’ 4 8 ” N , 75’ 03‘ 45” W), Cuba, 15. I. 1968 - Igt. M. STUBBE.

Also this species is recorded from Havana by DUSBABEK & ~ E R N P (1969) from Rat tu~ rattm (L.) and Raftws noruegicm (ERxL.).

Androlaelaps fahrenhofai (BERLESE, 191 I )

Rlaterial examined: I female from Raftus raifus (L.), Gupeyal (zoo 27’ 48” N, 75” 03’ 45” W), Cuba, 15. 11. 1968 - Igt. M. STUBBE.

This species was recorded by DUSBABEK & ~ E R N J (1969) from Rattm norvegiczrs (ERxL.) captured in Havana and the morphological variability has been discussed. In this specimen there are 39 pairs of dorsal scutal setae, and these setae are remarkab- ly longer than in European specimens, reaching the base of the next setae of the longitudinal series.

Chiroptonyssus haematophagus (FONSECA, I 93 5 )

Material examined: 7 females and 148 protonymphs from Molossus ater GEOFFR., Vera Cruz, bfexico, 2 3 . 10. 1967 - lgt. IN. STUBBE.

From the territory of Mexico this species is recorded already by RADOVSKY (1967) from the same host.

Chiroptonyssus robustipes (EWING, I 92 5 )

Material examined : I 3 protonymphs from Tadarida hrasiliensis (GEOFFR.), La Municion, 8 km south from Gupeyal, Cuba, 1 3 . I . 1968 - lgt. M. STUBRF:.

This species was recorded from Cuba from the same host by SILW TABOADA (1965) and DUSBABEK (1969).

Cryptonyssus sp.

Material examined: I female from Eptesiczt.r f r isct~r (BEAUVOIS), El Beral (21” 57‘ N, 84’ 33‘ W), Cuba, 21. I I . 1967 - Igt. M. STCBBE.

This specimen is in a very poor condition, but it evidently belongs to the same species as the protonymphs mentioned by DUSB~BEK (1969). The poor condition of our specimen does not permit to give here a description of this probably new species.

Periglischrus iheringi OUDEMAKS, I 902

Material examined: 4 females from Artibew jamaicensis LEACH, El Beral (ZIO 57' N, 84O 33' W), Cuba, 26. 11. 1967; 6 females and I male from the same host, Tabajo, 15 k m west from Baracoa, Cuba, 6. 2. 1968 - all Igt. M. STUBBE.

This species was recorded from the same host in Cuba already by RUDNICK (1960), SILVA TABOADA (1965) and DUSBABEK (1968).

Eutrombicula (Eutrombicula) sp.

Material examined: cca 5 0 larvae from Capromys pilorides (SAY) , El Beral (21' 57' N, 84O 33' W), Cuba, 29. 11. 1967 - lgt. M. STUBBE.

O u r specimens are characterized by the presence of 3 genualae on legs I. In the basal dimensions they agree with E. (E.) belkifini GOULD, 1950, in which, however, only z genualae I are present. The scutum in our specimens is more concave poster- iorly. The form of palpal claw in our specimens resembles that of E. (E.)goeldii (OUDMS., I ~ I O ) , but the length of scutal setae does not reach 40 in our specimens.

Myotrombicula sp.

Material examined: 5 larvae from Tadarida bradiensis (GEOFFR.), La Municion, 8 km south from Gupeyal, Cuba, 13. I. 1968 - Igt. M. STUBBE.

T w o subgenera with bi- or trifid palpal claws are known: palearctic subgenus Mjotrombicula WOMERSLEY & HEASLIP, I 943 and neotropic subgenus Perafes BRENNAN & DALMAT, 1960. By the formula SIF = 7B-B-3-3 I I 1.000 our specimens correspond with the subgenus Myotrombicula.

Summary

Nine species of mites parasitic on mammals in Cuba and two species in Mexico are recor- ded. The first findings of trombiculid mites of the genera Eutrombicula and Myotrombicula for Cuba and a first record of Ornitbodoros (Alectorobius) dtdsbabeki ~ E R N P , 1967 for Mexico are given.
