Bible Focus Ephesians 1:14-23
Theme Focus Eyes on Jesus
Explanation of the Ephesian Series In the letter to the Ephesians, Paul explores the unsearchable riches of God’s grace that have been poured out through God’s saving work culminating in Christ. Paul demonstrates how the Gospel creates a radical unity in anticipation of the whole of creation being brought under the Lordship of Jesus. In the power of the Spirit, this Good News transforms every aspect of our communities and our lives - shaping how we behave, think, love, relate, work, and stand firm in the face of evil.

6. Why do we forget who Jesus is? (We might get distracted by other things - like our hobbies, latest game, school, sport. We might loose interest, thinking that knowing Jesus better is not important. Or we might assume that we already know everything, and that there is nothing more to learn.)
7. When we focus on Jesus - what happens? (We grow in confidence of Jesus’ power, love him more, trust more in the person who is really in control, are empowered by the Holy Spirit, and grow in confidence of the glorious inheritance.)
Prayer Gracious Father, thank you that we can know you because you sent us Jesus. Please help us to grow in our understanding of who you are, that we would know you better, love you more, be grounded in hope, know your power, and grow more like Jesus everyday. Thank you that Jesus is our King. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Main Point: To grow as disciples, we want to see Jesus more clearly and know him better as the King over everything!
Discussion Questions Read Ephesians 1:15-23 from the Bible Story (page 1-3)
1. What type of things do you pray for your family, friends, and the world?
2. What things did Paul pray for the Ephesians? (HINT: Look for all the sentences that begin with ‘I pray’. Write down all the answers on the whiteboards.) (He prayed for wisdom and understanding from the Holy Spirit, to know God better, understand more clearly the rich and glorious hope, to know God’s great power that raised Jesus from the dead and made him ruler over everything.)
3. Why do you think Paul cares about what the Ephesians know? (For Paul this is one of the most important things - that they would see the power of God in Christ, know him better and better. Knowing God in Christ, through the help of the Holy Spirit transforms everything! Knowing about the true king of the world gives us hope, confidence, and strength for today.)
4. What things is Jesus ruler over? (Everything in this world - this includes all kings, queens, Prime Ministers, Presidents, bosses, all people in charge. He is the ruler over everything in this world, and in the new creation - heaven.)
5. What things is Jesus the ruler over in your life? (Everything - that includes how you think, how you act, how you love people who are different or similar to you. He is the ruler over every aspect of your life.)
6. What do you think prevents us from seeing Jesus clearly? (We might get distracted by other things - like our hobbies, latest game, school, sport. We might loose interest, thinking that knowing Jesus better is not important. Or we might assume that we already know everything, and that there is nothing more to learn.)

Animated Eyes Link: In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he gives thanks to God for the people of Ephesus and prays that they would continue to grow in their knowledge and understanding of all that God has done for them. Paul writes, "I keep asking God to give you the wisdom and understanding that come from the Holy Spirit. I want you to know God better. I pray that you may understand more clearly.” And to know God better and see him more clearly, we need to have open eyes.
You will Need: Felt pens Copies of the eye template sheet
Instructions: 1. Print copies of the eye template sheet. 2. Help the children draw black dots in the eyes. 3. Add eyebrows to help with expression. 4. Optional: add colour around the black dots.
-
I Spy Link: In Paul’s letters, he encourages and prays that they would see Jesus clearly. What can you see around the room that reminds you of Jesus?
You will Need: Cards cut out Blue tac
Instructions: 1. Before the children come, blue tac the cards around the room. Leave one of each
type on the table (the picture in a box). 2. Ask the children if they can find (you could also get out the binoculars to emphasis
looking carefully for Jesus) • 5 x crowns • 4 x Jesus as King of the universe • 3 x Jesus is risen
Find Jesus as King x 4 Find crown x 5
-
Find Jesus is Risen x 3

Optical Illusions Link: In Paul’s letters, he encourages and prays that they would see Jesus clearly. Sometimes it can be hard to see clearly - things might be confusing like these illusions. Thankfully, we are promised the Holy Spirit which helps us to see Jesus clearly.
You will Need: Illusions cut out
Instructions: 1. Print out the Illusions and cut out each box. 2. Split the group into pairs. 3. Each pair gets an illusion, attempts to answer the questions, and then swaps.
Illusion 1: Are the dots moving? Try staring at just one section.
-
Illusion 2: How many legs does this elephant have?
Illusion 3: What animal can you see? There are two.
-
Illusions sourced: https://www.insider.com/classic-optical-illusions-2018-1
Illusion 4: Does the fork have two or three prongs?
Illusion 5: Are the grey lines straight?
-
Spot the Difference Link: In Paul’s letters, he encourages and prays that they would see Jesus clearly. Thankfully, we are promised the Holy Spirit which helps us to see Jesus clearly.
You will Need: 10 every-day objects
Instructions: 1. Sit in a circle and place all the objects in the middle of the circle. 2. Pick one person to leave the room. 3. Move or change one object. [Easier: remove one object, Harder: change the
position of an object e.g. turn it upside down] 4. The person returns and has 3 chances to guess what is different. 5. Repeat with a different ‘Guesser’.
-
17 I pray and ask God to
give you the wisdom
and understanding that
come from the Holy Spirit.
I want you to know God
better.
