Reflections for February 2018 ….. Capn' Frank

(“from the January newsletter”) As the year progresses, I am going to include

the charter in small pieces in the newsletter. I am also making a copy of it avail-able in a notebook for anyone to look at during our monthly meeting. It will be at the table with the club secretary. You can take it to your table and read it, then return it to the secretary by the end of the meeting. I will also make it available to anyone through email. Just send me, or the secretary a request by email and we will attach the HOG Charter and send it back to you. Here is an-other short section about our HOG Charter and some of the rules set forth by the Harley-Davidson Motor Company: 1. Each Chapter must be sponsored by an authorized Harley-Davidson® Dealership. The decision to sponsor a Chapter shall be undertaken solely at the Dealer’s discretion. 2. An authorized Harley-Davidson Dealership may sponsor only one H.O.G.® Chapter, unless there is a valid reason to justify additional Chapter (s) per the H.O.G.® Multiple Chapter Guidelines. 3 The sponsoring Dealership shall have absolute authority to require that the sponsored Chapter (s) conducts its operations and activities in accord-ance with the vision or standards of the sponsoring Dealership. The sponsoring Dealership shall require the Chapter to operate and conduct activities in accord-ance with this Charter. 4. The sponsoring Dealership shall have authority over any and all mat-ters pertaining to Chapter membership. 5. The sponsoring Dealership shall have authority over, and approval rights regarding the content of all Chapter communications. 6. The sponsoring Dealership may establish Chapter dues, which shall be used solely to pay or defray the cost of Chapter administration. 7. The Dealer may terminate sponsorship of their Chapter at any time, at which point the Chapter’s H.O.G.® affiliation shall cease and desist. 8. Rescission and Termination of Sponsorship: In the event a sponsoring Dealer decides to terminate or rescind sponsorship of a Chartered Chapter: A. The sponsoring Dealer shall inform H.O.G. of the sponsoring Dealer’s intent to cancel or terminate sponsorship fifteen days prior to providing the Chapter with written notice of termination or rescission of sponsorship. B. The sponsoring Dealer shall provide the Chapter with written notice that sponsorship is terminated or rescinded. The notice shall be effective fifteen days subsequent to date of delivery of the notice. A copy of the sponsoring Dealer’s written notice to the Chapter membership shall be sent to H.O.G. C. After a Dealership terminates their Chapter, a proposal to sponsor a new Chapter shall not be considered for a minimum period of twelve months from the date of termination. We have some new Road Captains, (and some OLD Road Captains) on the list and I am looking for some new destinations and routes & rides for the HOG Chapter. It’s looking like a great riding season is shaping up, so “LETS RIDE & HAVE FUN!!! Remember………………..Ride Your Own Ride………Safety is YOUR Personal Responsibility!........Capn' Frank

The Ride Warrior Program is an annual photo-scavenger hunt in our H.O.G. chapter. Each year we ride to various locations around the state that are based on a common theme. At the location, we photograph ourselves with our bike, the designated locale signage and a printout of the theme design for that year.

When 15 or more photographs are accumulated, we turn them in to the Ride Warrior co-ordinator (Jeff Kohler) and receive a patch for that theme/ year.

There are 10-15 stops provided in the January newsletter, with 2-3 more stops given out each subsequent month throughout the year.

If you would like to participate in the R/W 2018 Patch Design Contest, contact Jeff Kohler for the rules. Deadline for submission is February 12th, at the Chapter Gen-eral Meeting!

Prize is a $25 Harley-Davidson Gift Card!

Hello my Ladies of Harley

We are looking forward to our Valentine’s dance on the 10th of February 6:30 to 9:30, its going to be a fun evening.

If you know you are going to go to the dance, if you could let me know what you would like to bring to share that way we will have a variety

of food to share if you like that is. Well I have some Tee Shirts, which is the beginning of our

Harley Quilt that will be raffled off all year and the money made from it will be given to the Ad Lidem Children at Christmas time in

December, and a winner of the quilt will be chosen the same day that we have the

Harley party at the dealership with Pictures with Santa.

I’m very pleased and excited to have been selected to be the Assistant Director for 2018 for our New Port Richey Hog club. I have been a member in good standing since 2011.

For the new members that don’t know me, I started riding motorcycles as a teenager with my dad in the early 1970’s in Shawneetown, Illinois. I have been riding for over 20 years. We moved to Florida 17 years ago and though I had no plans on riding a motorcycle in this crazy traffic, you all know riding a Harley gets in your blood, so after a few years of getting used to the traffic here, my wife and I decided to start riding again. We then joined the HOG group because not only is it safer to ride in numbers, but it’s also a great way to make new friends.

We bought a used Harley Sportster which we rode for a few years, trading it off for a 2007 Electra Glide then on to what we now ride, a 2014 Ultra. Now after many years of just being a mem-ber and not really contributing much to the club, I decided it was time to get involved and bring some new blood to the board, and new ideas.

I’m looking forward to meeting all the new members that joined our club this year so far and continue growing friendships with our members who have been part of this club since we joined.

Remember, you can always join our rides by car or meet at the destination, but if you choose to

do that, please let the road captain know in advance by either text or calling so you are included in the

final reservation count.

We always notify the restaurants at either the beginning of the ride or at the drive through (if

we have one), of how many guests will be attending.

Don’t forget to order/pick up your name tag!

HOG MERCHANDISE

OMG!

Have we been relocated 500 miles north while we slept? The weather last month has been frigid.

For the snowbirds, I’m sure it is still better than snow and ice, but it should be at least 70 degrees as we are in FLORI-DA and we want to RIDE in nice weather.

Make sure you dress for the weather. When you get cold, your reactions slow down, and your focus tends to stare which means you are not as alert, and accidents can hap-pen.

Rides have been slow running due to the weather, but will pick up as soon as the Florida weather returns.

I hope you are also hungry this year, as all the Road War-rior Stops are Restaurants and we will be leading all that want the 2018 RW patch on more than enough rides to earn the patch.

In the meantime stay warm, participate in the rides sched-uled, and be careful out there.

Have fun riding and be safe,

John

New Owners Orientation...First Thursday of each Month!!

Join New Port Richey HOG Chapter #1027!

Well, here we are again. January was a great month for us. We had several fun rides to a lot of great spots.

Most of all, we did it safely and still had a lot of fun.

On the down side, we can all recall an incident that was too close for comfort., and most were probably due to distracted drivers. After doing a bit of research, here are some shocking statistics.

The following numbers illustrate the dangers of cell phone use by drivers and are downright startling. In fact, at any given time throughout the day, over 660,000 drivers are attempting to use their phones while driving.

Smart phones, and other electronic devices, have made it easy for us to stay connected at all times. But that can pose serious safety risks for other drivers and pedestri-ans. If someone decides to check their text messages, emails, missed calls, or any other apps while driving they put us all at risk.

Cell phone distraction rates are disturbingly high. The following are just a few current statistics from FDOT and the National safety council:

• The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year.

• Over 300,000 injuries occur each year because of acci-dents caused by texting and driving.

• Texting while driving is 6 X more likely to cause an ac-cident than driving drunk.

• Answering a text takes away your attention for a ap-proximately 5 seconds. Traveling at 55mph, that’s enough time to travel the length of a football field.

• 11 teens die every day because of texting while driving.

• 21% of teens involved in fatal accidents were distracted by their cell phones.

Although I was not able to get any accurate or recent infor-mation as to the number of motorcycle crashes resulting from distracted drivers, we can all relate to our own experi-ences.

This is not to insult anyone, but it is just to cause you to be alert. Although we are all skilled riders, we are not alone on the roadway. BE ALERT.

Let’s all be safe and have fun.

Biker Tragedy

A H.O.G. wife answers a knock at her door and finds a policeman standing with hat in hand.

He says, “I’m sorry to inform you, but your husband drowned in a giant vat of beer.”

She replied, “That’s terrible, he never had a chance.”

The policeman responded, “I don’t know about that. He got out three times to go to the bathroom!”
