NEW PERIODICALS BY KAREN LITTLE

This semiannual column lists newly issued periodicals; describes their objectives, for- mats, and contents; and provides information about special issues, title and format changes, mergers, and cessations.

British Postgraduate Musicology. Edited by Benjamin J. Davies. Annual. 1997-98. Subscription: British Post- graduate Musicology, c/o B. J. Davies, Wolfson College, Cambridge CB3 9BB. Individual/institution, £9.75; student, £3.00. ISSN 1460-9231.

A scholarly journal "dedicated to the publication of research by postgraduate and recent postdoctoral students of music," British Postgraduate Musicology typically con- tains three articles of fewer than four thou- sand words. It also includes a substantial re- view of published works, short abstracts of recent doctoral theses, conference reports, calls for papers, other announcements, and some correspondence. The journal's first issue appeared in October 1997, and its ed- itorial board consists of doctoral students.

Goldberg: Early Music Magazine. Edited by Serafin Senosiain. Quarterly. 1998-99. Subscription: Goldberg, 41- 42 50th St., Apt. #5A, Woodside, NY 11377. $35.00/yr. surface, $95.00/yr. airmail. ISSN 1138-1531.

First issued in 1997, Goldberg is an inter- national magazine devoted to music com- posed before 1750. It contains articles, reviews of compact-disc releases, and a sec- tion devoted to current events that lists books of note, concerts, and other miscella- neous items of interest to readers. The arti- cles are well written but lack notes or bibli- ographies. The review section, which is the principal strength of the magazine, begins with a list of between ten and twenty of the magazines' top compact-disc releases, con- tinues with reviews of those and other re-

leases, and concludes with a list of early- music recordings that have received top rat- ings during the past twenty-four months in at least three of ten classical-music maga- zines.

With the fourth issue in summer 1998, the magazine began publishing two bilin- gual editions, one in English and Spanish and the another in English and French. In each case, the two languages run in parallel throughout the issue. Advertisements for festivals, recordings, and so forth appear throughout the journal. The journal's Web site (http://www.goldbergmagazine.com) describes the journal and provides instruc- tions for subscribing electronically.

International Piano Quarterly: IPQ. Gramophone Publications. Edited by Harriet Smith. Quarterly. 1998. Sub- scription: Gramophone Publications Limited, 135 Greenford Road, Sud- bury Hill, Harrow, Middlesex HA1 3YD, Great Britian. $38.00/yr. ISSN 1368-9770.

This journal, first published in October 1997, contains reviews of piano recordings. Each issue includes three in-depth reviews focusing on a composer, a performer, or occasionally a particular composition. A complete discography often accompanies these substantial reviews. Approximately one dozen other titles receive brief reviews. Each review contains information on for- mat, approximate price, and the date of its review in Gramophone (if applicable). The reviews are well written and thoughtful. As with its sister publication, numerous adver- tisements appear throughout.

New Periodicals

Polish Music Journal. Polish Music Reference Center. Edited by Maria Anna Harley. Quarterly. 1998. Sub-

scription: http://www.usc.edu/dept/ polish_music/PMJ. Free. ISSN 1521- 6039.

This journal is an "academic, peer- reviewed publication devoted to musicolog- ical studies of Polish music and music in Poland." It contains three or four scholarly articles, two or three reports (on such top- ics as conferences and teaching opportuni- ties in Poland), and book reviews. Article topics range from composer studies to iconographical studies of musical instru- ments depicted in stone sculpture around 1500. With the journal's goal to bridge the gap between Polish researchers publishing in Polish and the English-speaking world, it is expected that future issues will contain English translations of selected articles from the Polish musicological quarterly Muzyka. Archives of previous issues are mounted on the Web site.

by John Harper. Annual. 1997. Sub-

scription: University of Wales Press, 6
