.
I
Can
Promise
That I will
Do my best-to
Think of others at
Christmas, putting them
Before myself by trying to
Give some joy and comfort to
All those who are less fortunate
Than I.
To do my duty to God
To make time between my
Social activities to attend
A Christmas church service, and
Remember the reason behind all the
Fun and festivities
To serve the Queen and help other
People- to try and make my community
A happier place in any little way I can
And
To keep
The
Guide
Law
By looking wider in
My everyday living
Over this time.
Dear friends I hope that as Christmas is on our
doorsteps that you have all an
opportunity to celebrate your
achievements in 2017 and enjoy
some Christmas Cheer! I visited the
Christmas Lunch held in Canberra
by Brindabella Trefoil Guild at the
end of November and with
Belconnen Trefoil Guild in early
December. We certainly did enjoy
ourselves. I also plan to be in
Sydney for a Christmas dinner with
my own Alpine Trefoil Guild friends
closer to Christmas.
I wish you all and family and friends
a joyous and wonderful Christmas
Season and look forward to sharing
again in 2018! Many thanks to the
Guilds who have sent me Greeting
cards.
Best Wishes
Sally

Guild Snippets
Lower Hunter TG Hosted a Region Trefoil Gathering –
“Sparkle Day”!
Trefoil Guild visitors from Singleton and Brisbane Water,
Rutherford Maitland Senior Guides and their leader Charlotte
Weatherall. We paid our respects to the Traditional owners of
the land on which we met before a getting to know you activity.
Rutherford Senior Guides gave a talk on their activities and plans
for senior guides. Followed by Charlotte who explained the
methods they used to introduce technology to the girls as a
communication tool. The girls followed up by serving morning tea
and participating in some of the activities prior to leaving.
Activities for the day included: Assisting with Days for Girls Project, working on Aust. Jamboree
Badge Swaps, Photo Booth, Sharing Dark Horse
Venture Project, Christmas Corner and many more. Chesne Jones gave an interesting and informative talk
on the history of Guiding and some of the personalities
involved in Moree and Tamworth Region, which were
areas of interest to some of our members. Chesne is a
most enthusiastic and motivational speaker, and
stayed for some time and participated in our activities.
The day continued with much fun, frivolity and food
before closing with the Guides Own hosted by
Singleton, and Colours.
Brisbane Water Trefoil Guild volunteered to host the
next Coastal Valleys Region Trefoil Guild gathering in 2018. They have something to live up to.

Belconnen Trefoil Guild supported the Olave Baden Powell
Society (OB-PS) Australian members Gathering in Canberra
recently. The super ladies provided a lovely lunch at Innabaanya
Campsite to conclude our first National Gathering for Australian
members of OB-PS Bravo to Carol Wake and the team!
IM Banksia TG - This year
we decided that we should
try to learn something new.
Alison came up with the idea
of going on a National Park
Tour. We booked in to the
Dharawal Indigenous
Walking Tour at Dharawal National Park near Campbelltown.
We were met at the gate by an Aboriginal Elder named Deidre and she was just amazing. She
gave us an explanation of her totem the Lyrebird and what it means to her. She told us about the
plants we came across on our walk and showed us the traditional uses for them. Deidre was happy
to share and answer all our questions. We walked down to a lookout and were amazed with the
view. We all came away having learnt new things and being surprised with the wealth of knowledge
that is available if you just go looking.
We would like to challenge other trefoil guilds to learn something new in 2018.
Brisbane Water TG - OUT AND ABOUT in October
Doreen, Sue and Eileen went to the State Picnic, “Spring into Trefoil”, at Mittagong on Saturday, 14th October. Morning tea and activities were followed by a speaker, lunch and then home.
The Australian Trefoil Guild Advisers Conference was held at Camp Chapman 20th-22nd October, 2017. Sue and Doreen catered for the event, ably assisted by Julie, Kay, Jean Poulter and Rhonda.
Coastal Valleys Region Trefoil Guild Gathering 2017 at East Maitland Guide Hall was held on 4th November 2017, hosted by Lower Hunter TG. 5 BW members attended. Good activities including “Days for Girls”.
A lovely social day.

Singleton Trefoil Guild members recently visited the Infantry Museum which is situated at the Singleton Infantry Camp nearby. After morning tea, our meeting and Lunch [ true to Trefoil style] we were taken on a guided tour of the Museum . We were surprised at the number of areas of conflict in which our forces have been engaged and very interested to see the ways in which the uniforms have been changed or modified to meet the conditions of the combat area. After saying for some time that we would visit Callomondah Camp site we eventually did so. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the veranda for our meeting .It is a very pleasant area even in a season as dry as we are having and we imagined Spring bush flowers and growth in a wetter season. This was a pleasant day out.
Oxley TG have a journal where Guild members record their own Guiding Story. The following are
summaries of what was written by Illa Brennan and Jeanette Toupein who passed away earlier this
year. Ila Brennan lived in the outback as a girl, and joined 1st Inland Lone Guide Company, later
becoming a Leader in 1950 with 1st NSW Lone Guide Company for many years. She was
appointed Lone Guide Adviser in 1956. She was appointed Western Region Commissioner in
1970, and that year visited Our Chalet and Olave House, and had lunch with Lady Baden
Powell. She was a member of our Trefoil Guild from 1993. She said “Thank God for Guiding, and I
count my blessings for receiving that circular about Lone Guiding”.
Jeanette Toupein started her Guiding history when she joined 1st Goulburn Guides in 1934. In 1936
when the family moved to Grafton she became a Ranger, and did correspondence training for her
Lieutenant’s Warrant, working with South Grafton Guide Company. With her Guide friend she
represented her Company at the rally in Sydney for the Coronation of King George VI. She
attended the World Jamboree at Bradfield Park in 1939, working in the hospital tent. She became
Lieutenant to Burwood Company from 1939 to 1944, when her involvement with Guiding ceased
until she joined Oxley Trefoil Guild in 1993. She died just a month after her 99th birthday.
Does your Guild have similar journals? Perhaps you could share some similar information!!!

Sadly I have to report that both Cowpasture and Woonona Trefoil Guilds will be closing at the end
of 2017 due to aging members and difficulty with getting to meetings. Bunbury hope to stay in touch
and invite their Cowpasture friends to their outings as possible, Great to have friends in Guiding isn’t
it?
We wish all their members well and hope that they will be able to stay in touch, perhaps through
joining NSW Central Lones Trefoil Guild. Contact: Coordinator Lyn McGuckin

Glengarry Trading Post Closing Saturday 2nd December
Did you know that 85% of Guide Shop sales are now online? Glengarry Trading Post will be closing
its doors permanently, with the last day of trade Saturday 2 December 2017. We would like to take
this opportunity to thank everyone involved over the years, and for all their hard work and dedication
in running the shop.
Elizabeth Starr - 20 November– Passed away peacefully with family surrounding her. Though Elizabeth was not a Trefoil Guild member I think it appropriate to share this with you. As a previous Acting State Commissioner and as a Leader, Manager and Director of Guides NSW & ACT as well as a long and abiding champion of Glengarry Elizabeth truly demonstrated her commitment to her Promise and Law. We will long remember her happy and generous nature. A Thanksgiving Service was held on 24th November with many members present representing Trefoil Guild.
Vale Elizabeth – may you rest in peace.

INTERNATIONAL
REPORT FROM BRIDGES 2017
A Singapore Trefoil Guild Event October
2017. Held to coincide with the 100-year
Anniversary Celebrations of Singapore Girl
Guides.
Singapore Girl Guides Trefoil Guild hosted this
very special event over 2 days in late October
2017. Eleven Trefoil Members from Guides
Australia attended as “Contingent Members”
and were joined by 2 Friends of the Asia Pacific WAGGGS; Helen Hargraves and Dallas Langdon.
The Bridges event was first held in 2016, it was then a friendship weekend between Girl Guides
Malaysia and Singapore Girl Guides Trefoil members held in Johore Bahru, Malaysia, it was so well
received that it was repeated again in October 2017. This time all other Asia Pacific member
countries were invited to send contingents,

Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Korea, Sri Lanka and Singapore from the
Asia Pacific region sent groups. A Trefoil Guild Member from the U.K. and a Girl Scout Leader from
G. S.USA overseas unit based in Singapore also attended making it a very international event.
A most civilised event with hotel accommodation located in the heart of Singapore and 2 luxury
meals at other large hotels, a full day of activities at Singapore Guide House culminating in a
wonderful indoor campfire run by Singaporean Girl Guides with great poise and confidence. It was a
truly magical event everyone singing and dancing to old campfire favourites all sung in English even
though English was really the first language of only one contingent.
A half day in the beautiful Singapore Botanic Gardens followed by one of the luxury lunches closed
the event.
Many friendships were rekindled or new ones formed. Trefoil Guilds in the Asia Pacific are all very
much alike, supporting Guiding, having fun and serving their local communities. Only the Trefoil
Dress and language is different.
A particular high light for me was the Friends of Asia Pacific WAGGGS pinning Ceremony
conducted by Australia’s own Helen Hargraves with the founder of the group Juseon Byun from Girl
Scouts of Korea actually pinning the membership pins on.
I had taken the opportunity before I left Australia of upgrading my membership from Silver to Gold.
5 other members of the Australian Contingent, Jill Jeffrey, Kath Evans, Judy Lyall, and Joan Thom
became new silver members following some great promotion of the fund by the members present
and received their silver pins from Juseon also. Kay Reeves received her sliver pin as she had not
been at a ceremony since joining the Friends Group.
This group is working hard to support Girl Guiding and Girls Scouting around the Asia Pacific region
of WAGGGS. In particular in Myanmar in recent years. Please think about joining the Friends group
the silver membership is 80 English Pounds.
Added to the wonderful Guiding content of the long weekend was lots of frantic sightseeing by all
the Australians present, Gardens by the Bay both during the Day and at Night, the mandatory
Singapore Sling in an under-refurbishment Raffles Hotel. Terrible price but so much fun and so very
yummy. A Trip to Changi to view the WW11 Museum, a ride
on the Singapore River by Bum Boat, and of course
Shopping. What would a trip to Singapore be without
shopping.
Thank you to all of the Australians for making me the lone
Non-Victorian so welcome in the group and for helping to
create memories that will last a life time.
