more choice

One line of wall

switch occupancy

sensors offers

unprecedented

application flexibility

Occupancy sensors continue to be among

the leading choices in lighting controls

since their advantages are numerous.

Watt Stopper/Legrand, the world leader in

energy efficient lighting control, continues

to innovate with a new line of wall switch

occupancy sensors, providing sensor

solutions for

any building.

Energy code

compliance

The reduction

in energy

consumption

achieved by

occupancy sensors is one reason they are

mandated in many energy codes, such as

ASHRAE 90.1, California’s Title 24 and

IECC.

Energy savings

Because occupancy sensors turn lights off

in unoccupied spaces, they are effective at

eliminating energy waste.

Lighting tax deduction

Using wall switch occupancy sensors can

qualify a project for valuable tax incentives

under EPAct 2005. Public building owners

who invest in energy efficiency equipment,

including lighting controls, could receive a

partial deduction of up to $0.60/ft2.

Sustainability

The use of lighting controls such as wall

switch sensors, is a cornerstone of

sustainable building practices and key to

optimizing a building’s energy

performance under LEED and other

certification programs.

PIR technology senses occupancy by detecting the

difference between heat emitted from the human

body in motion and the background space. Relying

on a clear line of sight, PIR switches make 100%

coverage cut-off possible.

Ultrasonic detection works by transmitting

ultrasonic sound waves throughout an area and

measuring the speed at which they return.

Occupant movement changes the frequency at

which these sound waves return, resulting in a

Doppler shift and occupancy detection.

We invented and patented Dual Technology to

combine the best of both PIR and ultrasonic

technologies. While PIR and ultrasonic sensors

provide optimal control for many spaces, some

applications pose difficulty for single technology

products. Our Dual Technology sensors ensure

maximum sensitivity and coverage in tough

applications for optimal reliability and energy

savings.

• Install PIR wall switch sensor where it has

a direct, unobstructed view of the targeted

space (furniture or other obstacles will

prevent detection).

• Use PIR wall switch sensor when the

occupant is facing the sensor to maintain

hand motion detection.

• Use ultrasonic wall switch occupancy

sensors in restrooms and utility/storage

rooms where sensor may have an

obstructed view of the space.

• Choose dual technology wall switch

sensors in private offices, conference

rooms and lunch/break rooms when

occupants are not very active or not facing

the sensor, or when switches need to be

installed at lower mounting heights to be

ADA-compliant.

• Use dual relay models to comply with bi-

level switching provisions in energy codes,

or to control a second lighting load or a

non-lighting load (i.e., an exhaust fan).

• Use low voltage wall switch sensors to add

installation flexibility, connect to other

building systems and lower installation

costs.

• In applications where ceiling sensors are

not practical (e.g., concrete ceilings or

asbestos above the ceiling) wall switch

sensors are ideal control solutions.

• DO NOT use PIR wall switch sensors in

spaces where furniture or other

obstacles block the sensor’s view.

• DO NOT install PIR wall switch sensors

in spaces with extremely low levels of

occupant motion.

• DO NOT use ultrasonic wall switch

sensors in a room where doors remain

open.

• DO NOT use ultrasonic wall switch

occupancy sensors in spaces with

heavy air flow.

• DO NOT control emergency or exit

lighting with wall switch sensors.

• DO NOT install wall switch sensors

within six feet of an air duct.

Utility/Storage

Room (15’x15’)

Small enclosed, windowless

storage/utility room used

infrequently for short periods

of time. Typically contains file

cabinets or computer

equipment.

Using low voltage wall switch occupancy

sensors can offer advantages over line

voltage sensors such as:

• Greater flexibility

– Connect multiple low voltage sensors

on a single circuit.

– Switch loads that exceed the rating of a

standard line voltage switch.

– Use as alternative to line voltage

switches in jurisdictions that prohibit

the use of 277 volt wall switches or in

locations where line voltage wiring is

not possible.

– Integrate seamlessly with VAV or building

systems for additional energy savings.

• Lower installation costs

Since low voltage sensors use low voltage

wiring, they do not require the use of

conduit. Installation labor costs are typically

lower and it is easier and faster to relocate

should rewiring be necessary.

Selecting the right power pack

When choosing a power pack to

accompany a low voltage wall switch

application, keep these factors in mind:

– Power output needs

– Voltage

– Relay type and ratings

– Type of load to be switched

– Mounting options

– Signaling from multiple devices

For more information on selecting power

packs as well as complete power pack

product information, refer to our Product

Selection Guide.

The PW-100 passive infrared (PIR) wall switch

sensor turns lights ON and OFF based on

occupancy. It is characterized by high sensitivity to

small and large movements, appealing aesthetics,

and variety of features.

SmartSet™

Applications

The PW-100 sensor is well suited for small,

enclosed spaces with clear line of sight of the

occupant. Common applications include small

office, small conference room and lunch/break

rooms.

Operation

The PW-100 replaces existing wall switches and

fits in a single gang junction box. It uses advanced

PIR technology to detect occupancy and turns

lighting ON. Once the space is vacated and the

time delay elapses, lights automatically turn OFF.

DIP switch settings allow for a variety of control

options such as Auto-ON or Manual-ON operation,

walk-through, and test modes.

Using SmartSet technology, the PW-100

continuously monitors the controlled space to

identify usage patterns and automatically adjust

the time delay for optimal energy efficiency. The

sensor assigns short delays (as low as seven

minutes) for times when the space is usually

vacant, and longer delays (up to 30 minutes) for

busier times. SmartSet is also able to differentiate

electrical noise from human motion for greater

performance.

Using SmartSet technology, the DW-100

continuously monitors the controlled space to

identify usage patterns and automatically adjust the

time delay for optimal energy efficiency. The sensor

assigns short delays (as low as seven minutes) for

times when the space is usually vacant, and longer

delays (up to 30 minutes) for busier times. SmartSet

is also able to differentiate electrical noise from

human motion for greater performance.

Low voltage wall switch sensors can offer

advantages over line voltage models. Using an

isolated form-C relay output, the DW-100-24

sensor integrates seamlessly with VAV or other

building systems for greater energy savings.

Multiple DW-100-24 sensors can also be connected

on a single circuit and can switch loads that exceed

the rating of a standard line voltage switch. In

addition, low voltage sensor installations do not

require the use of conduits reducing installation

costs and making relocation easier.

The DW-200 features a built-in light level sensor

that controls the second (secondary) relay. If

adequate daylight is present, the sensor will hold

secondary lights off until daylight levels drop,

providing increased energy savings. The DW-200

satisfies energy codes requiring bi-level or daylight

control switching. The two relays in the sensor give

it the ability to control two lighting loads

independently. This provides A/B switching where

the user can achieve half-lighting (or another

desired portion) from a single switch.
