NEWS & NOTES FROM OPENING WEEKEND• Texas Tech started off its season with a 3-2 showing last weekend at the Lions Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. The start matched Tech’s opening weekend from a year ago when the Red Raiders took part in the Sportco Kick-Off Classic hosted by UNLV.• The Red Raiders were originally scheduled for six games on opening weekend but their Thursday night opener against Southeastern Louisiana was cancelled due to cold and rainy conditions. • Texas Tech started its season with a loss for the first time since 2008 following a 4-3 setback against Akron where the Red Raiders led early before surrendering a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. • The Texas Tech pitching staff tossed two shutouts during the opening weekend of the season, marking the first time the Red Raiders have done so through the first five games since defeating Western New Mexico, 15-0, and New Mexico, 1-0, to start the 1998 season. • The Red Raiders were the only Big 12 Conference team to toss multiple shutouts during the first weekend of the season. • Texas Tech was the only Big 12 Conference program to have multiple pitchers record a perfect 0.00 earned-run average last weekend as Gretchen Aucoin and Brittany Talley did so in 16.2 combined innings between the two.• The Red Raiders were among the most aggressive teams on the bases last weekend, finishing 10-for-13 in stolen bases which ranked second in the Big 12. It marked Texas Tech’s most stolen bases through the first five games of a season since 2007 when the Red Raiders also swiped 10 bases during that span.

RED RAIDERS RETURN TO TROY COX CLASSIC FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT YEAR• Texas Tech will be returning to the Troy Cox Classic for the second-straight season after a 4-1 showing in the event a year ago where the Red Raiders defeated UMKC, Penn State and host New Mexico State. Tech’s lone loss came in the tournament opener against Colorado State.• Texas Tech ended the Troy Cox Classic with a 7-3 overall record a year ago, which marked its best record since winning the first 10 games of the 2011 season. • Texas Tech is 20-16 all-time when traveling to Las Cruces, N.M. for tournament action. The 2013 trip marked Tech’s first trip to New Mexico State since the 2002 season.• The Red Raiders will once again close the tournament against host New Mexico State. Texas Tech is 8-5 all-time when facing the Aggies in Las Cruces. • Taylor Powell, Samantha Camello, Gretchen Aucoin and Sydnie Tapia all hit over .300 during last season’s Troy Cox Classic with Powell leading the way with a team-best .615 average over five games where she was 8-for-13 with a home run and six RBI. Camello ended the weekend with a .455 average (5-for-11) while Aucoin and Tapia compiled .357 (5-for-14) and .333 (3-for-9) clips. • In the circle, Brittany Talley was a perfect 2-0 with a 3.62 earned-run average in three appearances a year ago while Cara Custer failed to surrender an earned run all weekend while earning three no-decisions in each appearance. Aucoin also went 1-0 with a 1.75 ERA in her four innings of work.

INSIDE THE SERIES• Texas Tech and Northern Colorado will be meeting for the second-straight year Friday morning and the fourth time in school history. The Red Raiders picked up an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over the Bears to improve to 3-1 all-time in the series. Tech is 2-1 against Northern Colorado when playing at a neutral site. The two teams will face each other again twice March 8-9 during the Tech’s own Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. • Texas Tech and Weber State will be meeting for the first time on a softball diamond Friday afternoon. • The Red Raiders will renew their series with the Islanders for the first time since 2005 this weekend as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 6-5 all-time against Texas Tech with wins in each of the last five meetings. Tech is 1-4 against the Islanders when playing at a neutral site. • Texas Tech and New Mexico State will continue their longstanding series on Sunday as the Red Raiders enter the first of two games this season against the Aggies with a 21-10 all-time advantage. Tech topped New Mexico State, 5-3, in eight in-nings a year ago to conclude the Troy Cox Classic. The victory marked Tech’s eighth win in the last 10 meetings between the two schools who have met in all but five seasons since 1996. The Red Raiders, who are 8-5 all-time when facing the Aggies on the road, will host New Mexico State March 9 in the final game of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.

TALLEY NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK AFTER DOMINATING OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech senior left-hander Brittany Talley was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week this past Tuesday after her dominating performance at the Lions Classic. Talley powered Tech to its first win of the season with a two-hit, complete game shutout of Nicholls State on Friday night and then followed up by tossing 4.1 shutout innings two days later against Texas Southern. The Little Elm, Texas native was the only Big 12 pitcher with at least 10 innings pitched to not allow a single run, earned or unearned, last weekend. Talley also matched her career high with seven strikeouts against Nicholls State before finishing the weekend with 11 while holding opponents to just a .154 batting average.

AUCOIN SOLID IN THE CIRCLE DURING OPENING WEEKEND AS WELLBrittany Talley wasn’t the only Red Raider with an impressive opening weekend. Gretchen Aucoin also tossed 5.1 shutout innings in three appearances, including the final 2.2 innings against Texas Southern where she picked up her first save of the season and the third already in her career. Aucoin, who entered with one on and one out in the fifth inning against the Lady Tigers, now ranks tied for sixth all-time at Texas Tech in saves after recording two during her 2013 freshman season. The Ocean Springs, Miss. native was the only Red Raider to appear three times in the circle over the first five games of the season.

OFF TO THE RACESTexas Tech’s ability to steal bases was on full display during the Lions Classic as the Red Raiders swiped 10 alone over five games. Sydni Emanuel and Lea Hopson led Tech with four stolen bases each while Brittany Lee and Camaury Washington were both able to swipe a bag as well. Tech ended the weekend ranked second in the Big 12 in stolen bases, trailing only Texas which had 11 over its first five games. The Red Raiders had not previously stolen 10 bases over the first five games of a season since 2007 when Tech also totaled 10 stolen bases during that span.

JUNIOR COLLEGE TRANSFERS PAYING OFF FOR RED RAIDERSSince Shanon Hays’ arrival at Texas Tech in 2010, the Red Raiders have found success with junior college players, recruiting the likes of Logan Hall, Adriana Perez, Raven Richardson among others. Through five games this season, Tech’s current class of junior college transfers have boosted the Red Raiders both offensively and defensively with Lea Hopson at second base, Kristi Belshe in left field and Kady Crow appearing behind the plate. Hopson, a College of Southern Idaho transfer, led all Red Raiders with a .429 average last weekend that included a pair of home runs, a double and three RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, got off to a fast start, going 2-for-3 in the season opener against Akron which included a home run a pair of RBI. She ended the weekend hitting .313 with a pair of doubles after transferring from Lake Land College in Illinois where she led all junior college players in hitting a year ago. Crow’s impact was felt most defensively as she started behind the plate twice while driving in a RBI single for extra run support in Tech’s 2-0 victory over Nicholls State. Belshe and Hopson arrived at Tech after earning NJCAA All-American honors in 2013.

THIS WEEK IN THE BIG 12

#6THISWith almost a brand new roster and a slew of freshmen, it was quite understandable when Texas Tech was predicted to finish sixth in the Big 12 preseason poll. Well, it was understandable for everyone outside the Red Raider dugout as Tech quickly adopted the motto “6This” for the 2014 season. The motto should be a driving force for the Red Raiders, who after finishing 30-26 in 2013, will be looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons after being left out of the field a year ago.

RED RAIDERS BOAST LARGEST FRESHMEN CLASS IN SCHOOL HISTORYIn order to get back to the postseason, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have to rely on the largest freshmen class in school history. The 11-member freshmen class breaks the previous school record of eight freshmen from both the 2004 and 2010 seasons. It is also the largest freshmen class in the Big 12 this season as Tech has four more freshmen then Texas and five more than Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State. The group will be expected to not just fill a few roles but make an impact early as Tech tries to replace all three positions in the outfield along with holes at first base and catcher as well. TEXAS TECH RANKS THIRD IN WINS UNDER HAYSSuccess has been no stranger to the Red Raiders under Shanon Hays. Under the Lubbock native, the Red Raiders have flour-ished, winning 151 games in four seasons which already makes Hays the winningest coach in program history. Texas Tech’s success during this stretch has lifted the program from the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings as the Red Raiders are tied with Baylor as the third-winningest school the past four seasons. Tech is one of just three conference teams to record four straight 30-win seasons, joining the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. BIG 12 WINS DURING THE HAYS ERA Rank Team Total Wins 1. Oklahoma 201 2. RED RAIDERS TO BE POWERED IN THE CIRCLETexas Tech associate head coach Aly Sartini will have possibly the deepest and most experienced pitching staff of her tenure this season as the Red Raiders return a pair of veterans in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer along with expe-rienced sophomore Gretchen Aucoin. The staff will get an added boost, though, from the emergence of junior Chandler Moore, who, according to Sartini, had the best fall of her collegiate career. The four returners represent 94 percent of Tech’s total innings from 2013 and 29 of the 30 victories from a year ago as well. They will be joined in the circle by freshman Cassie McClure, the reigning Texas 4A-5A Player of the Year, and redshirt freshman Mattison Maisel.

RED RAIDERS ADD PAIR OF NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS IN BELSHE, HOPSONSimilar to years past, Texas Tech once again turned to the junior college level during the offseason to fill needs around the di-amond, bringing in four transfers including two NJCAA All-Americans in Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe. Hopson, who starred the past two seasons at College of Southern Idaho, was among the top junior college hitters around the country as she hit .431 in 2013 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, led the NJCAA with a .590 batting average in 2013 while playing for Lake Land College in Illinois. Belshe was also the national leader in hits (111) and on-base percentage as well (.645) while also ranking third in doubles (26), runs scored (94) and slugging percentage (1.005). The pair mark the seventh and eighth junior college All-Americans to sign with Tech under Shanon Hays. 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Kaylyn Archuleta C Jr Alamagordo, N.M. HAYS AND OLD FRIEND REUNITE Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have a longtime friend along his side throughout the 2014 season as Greg “Emo” Ev-ans joined the staff this past summer as an assistant coach. Evans, who previously spent nine seasons as the associate head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, will be responsible primarily for the Tech infield which, after setting the school record for fewest errors in 2012, struggled through portions of last season. Considered one of the top infield coaches nationally, Evans helped produce several of the top defenses in the country during his 25 seasons as a collegiate baseball coach. He will look to do the same in his first stint in softball as he inherits an infield scattered with freshmen but also with a pair of returnees in Samantha Camello and Sydnie Tapia. The Boyle, Miss. native coached Shanon Hays when he was first started his collegiate career as an assistant at Lubbock Christian. He would later move crosstown to Tech where he spent a total of nine seasons under longtime baseball coach Larry Hays, father of Shanon Hays. The Red Raiders experienced their most success in pro-gram history during that time with seven 40-win seasons and six trips to the NCAA Tournament.

CUSTER, TALLEY HEAD INTO 2014 ALREADY AMONG THE TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME GREATSMost programs throughout the country would likely feel fortunate to have one pitcher making her way up the school’s career record book. Texas Tech is fortunate, though, to have two in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer. The two pitchers have worked the majority of innings for the Red Raiders the past two seasons and will continue to be mainstays in the circle yet again this season. CAMELLO RETURNS UP THE MIDDLE AFTER STELLAR FRESHMAN SEASONFollowing an impressive debut in 2013, Samantha Camello will be looking for more of the same this season after hitting .311 while starting in all 56 games a year ago. The Temecula, Calif. native became only the sixth starting freshmen in school history to hit over .300 in her rookie campaign, joining the likes of Mikey Kenney (2010), Stephanie Drewry (2009), Ashley Parker (2004), Sandy Butler (1998) and Paula Workman (1997). Camello, who split time between shortstop and second base as a freshman, led a powerful Tech offense during Big 12 play with a .275 average while playing in one of the nation’s top pitching conferences. She will likely be Texas Tech’s opening day shortstop for the second-straight season.

HAYS TO BECOME LONGEST TENURED COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORYAlready the winningest coach in program history, Texas Tech skipper Shanon Hays will add another career achievement to his resume in 2014. The fifth-year head coach needs 28 games to catch Renee Luers-Gillespie for the longest-tenured Tech coach all-time as he enters the 2014 season having already led the Red Raiders in 227 contests over his four seasons, 28 shy of Gillespie’s 255 from 1996-2000. Hays is currently third all-time in the Tech record book as he also trails Bobby Reeves (2001-04) by eight games as well. He will pass Reeves on Feb. 15 against Weber State and then Gillespie on March 15 when the Red Raiders face Cal State Fullerton in the Titan Classic. EVANS ONE OF TWO NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT THIS SEASONGreg Evans isn’t the only new face in the Texas Tech dugout this season as former Mississippi Valley State assistant coach Brooke Reed joined the program this fall as the new director of operations. Evans and Reed complete a staff that includes head coach Shanon Hays, associate head coach Aly Sartini and volunteer assistant Holley Gentsch, who was promoted from a graduate assistant position into a coaching role this season. Sandy Wellman, formerly James, will replace Gentsch as the program’s graduate assistant after completing her eligibility a year ago.

Brittany Talley was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after tossing 11.1 shutout innings last weekend.

POWELL & TALLEY DESTINED FOR SUCCESS OUTSIDE SOFTBALLOne thing is certain after the 2014 season - Texas Tech will have a pair of seniors destined for success. The only two four-year seniors on the Tech roster, Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell are scheduled to receive their degrees this spring with Talley earning hers in chemical engineering while Powell will graduate as an animal sciences major. While highly successful on the diamond, the pair also sport two of the highest grade-point averages on the team. Talley, a native of Little Elm, Texas, enters this semester with a 3.8 GPA and has already accepted a position with Oxy, an international oil company. Powell, meanwhile, has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA entering her final semester and will look to attend veterinarian school following graduation.

TEXAS TECH SET FOR 24 GAMES AT ROCKY JOHNSON FIELDTexas Tech fans will have plenty of opportunities to catch the Red Raiders at Rocky Johnson Field this year with 24 home games set for the 2014 season. After three weekends on the road to start the season, Tech opens its home slate Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Sam Houston State and Southern as part of the Texas Tech Invitational, the first of two home tournaments for the Red Raiders. Tech will also host the fourth- annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on March 7-9, bringing in the likes of UT Arlington, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian and New Mexico State. Following a nearly week-long trip to Southern California, Tech closes its non-conference slate with a March 19 doubleheader against North Texas and a three-game set March 21-23 with Texas State. The two series begin an eight-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who will open Big 12 Conference play March 28 at home against Baylor. Tech will also host Oklahoma State and Iowa State in a pair of three-game series this season at Rocky Johnson Field.

RED RAIDERS PICKED SIXTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech was selected to finish sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll that was voted upon by the conference coaches. The Red Raiders, who finished 30-26 a year ago, have ended the season ranked higher in the conference standings than their preseason selection twice under fifth-year head coach Shanon Hays. Oklahoma, the reigning NCAA National Champion, was the unanimous pick to defend its title while Baylor, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State follow with Iowa State slated a spot behind the Red Raiders in seventh place. BIG 12 CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL Rank Team (First-Place Votes) Points 1. Oklahoma (6) 36 2. Baylor (1) 31 3. Texas 26 4. Kansas 18 5. Oklahoma State 16 6. Texas Tech 13 7. Iowa State 7
