Lobos coach Bob Davie wouldn’t go that far, but said this O-line is “per- forming above expectations more than we’ve had in the (previous) four years.” Davie credited first- year offensive line coach Saga Tuitele, as well as players like Avery Jordan, who stepped in at right offensive tackle after senior Garrett Adcock was lost for the season due to concussions. But who’s the quarterback, Lamar Jordan or Austin Apoda- ca? Davie said on Monday he was leaning toward Jordan, but said Tuesday he didn’t know which QB would start and added he didn’t think it was impor- tant. “I think both of those guys are in a good place right now heading down the stretch,” he said. A fumble recovery by Brian Urlacher led to a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Graham Leigh and a 2-point conversion pass from Leigh to Tommy Hemphill, providing the margin of victory as UNM improved to 4-0 en route to a 9-4 season and a berth in the Insight.com Bowl. The game was played in the rain on a muddy field. >>> UNM nickel safety Lee Crosby played with USU tight end Landon Home and Aggies wide receiver Connor McGuire at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah; Aggies linebacker Brock Carmen and Lobos offensive guard Chris Lewis were team- mates at Riverside (Calif.) Community College. >>> Two of the most memorable games in the UNM-Utah State series were won and lost on missed kicks. In 2002, a missed PAT by the Lobos’ Kenny Byrd gave the Aggies a 45-44 overtime victory. Last year, a missed 41-yard field goal by Utah State’s Brock Warren handed UNM a 14-13 win. >>> Utah State and New Mexico have been members of the same conference for 15 years: 11 in the old Skyline Confer- ence (1951-61) and now four seasons in the Mountain West. >>> Utah State held UNM to just two first downs, tied for the USU school record, in defeating the Lobs 6-0 in 1953. The Aggies beat UNM by the same score the following year. >>> New Mexico defensive line coach Stan Eggen was Utah State’s inside line- backers coach and recruiting coordinator from 1986-90 under coach Chuck Shel- ton. ... Lobos safeties coach and pass- ing game coordinator Charles McMillian played at Utah State from 1993-94 and was a teammate of Aggies head coach Matt Wells. ... Wells is a former UNM assistant. >>> Utah State’s most lopsided victory in the series with UNM came in 1960, when the Aggies beat the Lobos 46-7 in Albuquerque. That Utah State team would go on to lose 20-13 to unbeaten New Mexico State in the Sun Bowl. AGGIE NOTES SCOUTING THE AGGIES Utah State quarterback Kent Myers was injured late during the Aggies’ loss to Wyoming last week. Coach Matt Wells has said only that Myers is “day to day.” Myers and No. 2 QB Damion Hobbs are both strong runners, but Myers is much the better passer and better able to attack a UNM second- ary that, while making some big plays, also has given them up. Star running back Devante Mays has been limited all season by a knee injury. When healthy, he ranks up there with Boise State’s Jer- emy McNichols and Nevada’s James Butler. Defen- sively, is this a class in history or current events? The Aggies have given up 92 points and 942 yards the past two weeks in losses to San Diego State and Wyoming. Traditionally strong on defense, they ranked 17th nationally last season in total yards allowed. But they’ve lost four first-team all-confer- ence defenders the past two years. Senior running back Teriyon Gipson, the nation’s leader in average yards per carry, said this week he feels the Lobos’ current offensive line is the best he has played behind. Lobos coach Bob Davie wouldn’t go that far, but said this O-line is “per-forming above expectations more than we’ve had in the (previous) four years.” Davie credited first-year offensive line coach Saga Tuitele, as well as players like Avery Jordan, who stepped in at right offensive tackle after senior Garrett Adcock was lost for the season due to concussions. But who’s the quarterback, Lamar Jordan or Austin Apoda-ca? Davie said on Monday he was leaning toward Jordan, but said Tuesday he didn’t know which QB would start and added he didn’t think it was impor-tant. “I think both of those guys are in a good place right now heading down the stretch,” he said.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS

LOBO NOTES>>> New Mexico has not won in Logan,

Utah since 1997, when the Lobos edged the Aggies 25-22.

>>> UNM nickel safety Lee Crosby played with USU tight end Landon Home and Aggies wide receiver Connor McGuire at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah; Aggies linebacker Brock Carmen and Lobos offensive guard Chris Lewis were team-mates at Riverside (Calif.) Community College.

>>> Utah State and New Mexico have been members of the same conference for 15 years: 11 in the old Skyline Confer-ence (1951-61) and now four seasons in the Mountain West.

>>> Utah State held UNM to just two first downs, tied for the USU school record, in defeating the Lobs 6-0 in 1953. The Aggies beat UNM by the same score the following year.

>>> New Mexico defensive line coach Stan Eggen was Utah State’s inside line-backers coach and recruiting coordinator from 1986-90 under coach Chuck Shel-ton. ... Lobos safeties coach and pass-ing game coordinator Charles McMillian played at Utah State from 1993-94 and was a teammate of Aggies head coach Matt Wells.

AGGIE NOTES

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

Utah State quarterback Kent Myers was injured late during the Aggies’ loss to Wyoming last week. Coach Matt Wells has said only that Myers is “day to day.” Myers and No. 2 QB Damion Hobbs are both strong runners, but Myers is much the better passer and better able to attack a UNM second-ary that, while making some big plays, also has given them up. Star running back Devante Mays has been limited all season by a knee injury. When healthy, he ranks up there with Boise State’s Jer-emy McNichols and Nevada’s James Butler. Defen-sively, is this a class in history or current events? The Aggies have given up 92 points and 942 yards the past two weeks in losses to San Diego State and Wyoming. Traditionally strong on defense, they ranked 17th nationally last season in total yards allowed. But they’ve lost four first-team all-confer-ence defenders the past two years.
