Why choose a right material???

• Ecological balance• Green building material• Economical structures• Faster construction• Aesthetic advantages

1.ETFE-Ethylene Tetrafl Uoroethylene.

• A fluorocarbon based polymer.

• After ETFE is heated up and extruded into a paperthin film,it can be welded into large sheets that can be themselves be used as building films or can be woven as pumped air cusions.

• When ETFE are fused into pillows and pumped with air,the materials take on both stability and high insulation properties.

• These ETFE sheets are transparent like glass and trasmit more light than glass.

• Cost 24% to 70% less than glass to install.

• ETFE sheets are chemically inert,so they dont degrade under UV rays.

• As it has teflon in it.It is nonsticky,so it keeps itself clean.

• Recyclable:At the end of the useful life of atleast 50yrs to 200yrs it can be melted and reused...

Asthetics:• One can manipulate

the layers in cusions to change the insulating calculations. You can print graphics onto it to avoid the sunlight penetration.

• By printing patterns on different layers, one can create kaleidoscopes that change and react to sunlight.

2.Lucem Translucent concrete: LED concrete

• Translucent concrete (light emitting concrete) is a concrete based building material with light-transmissive properties due to embedded light optical elements-usually optical fibres.

• The manufacturing process of transparent concrete is almost same as regular concrete.Only optical fibres are spread throughout the aggregate and cement mix.

Page 7: New materials used in building industry

• Translucent concrete is used as fine architectural facade material and also for cladding of interior walls.

• It can be also used for flooring, ceiling, wall mounting etc...

3.Glassfibre reinforced concrete: GRC

• Glassfibre reinforced concrete or GRC is a composite material comprising a mixture of hydraulic cement, silica sand, alkali resistant glass fibres and water.

• The glass fibres in GRC effectively reinforce the mortar mix thereby improving its tensile strength and characteristics.

Advantages • GRC was developed as a corrosion free alternative

to traditional steel reinforced concrete.• GRC can be moulded into any complex

shape, profiles and architectural components.• Main advantage over precast concrete is one can

have very light structures resulting in savings in the costs of transportation, handling and erection of panels.

• Light weight design(both low and high rise superstructures) helps both in economic savings and also effect the sustainable environment.

• GRC is durable, seismic capable, chemical resistant ,non combustible and good sound and heat insulator.

4.Nanomaterials• Nanotechnology: When combined

with ultra-high-strength concrete, nanomaterials such as Carbon Nanotubes(CNT’s) create a material so strong in both tension and compression that steel reber is no longer needed in construction. Tje Shimizu TRY

2004 Mega-city pyramid concept Tokyo was so large that it could be only completed with kelp of carbon nanotubes.

5.Self healing concrete• The great downfall of

concrete-the worlds most widely used material is –unavoidable cracking, caused by water and chemicals.

• But a self healing concrete was developed by Netherland.Which says by infusing bacterial spores in concrete help in patching up cracks when water seeps through.

6.Germ repellent

• Stopping the spread of disease in a confined space such as hospital is not a easy task, involving continuous disinfecting. But a team from Harvard produced “slippery liquid porous surface”(SLIP),that would let bacteria slip off.

• Apart from hospitality application it can ward off dust, ice and also graffiti.

7.Sweating rooftops• Though the idea of a

“sweaty” building sounds rather unpleasant and awkward. But this new material from ZTH-Zurich that aims the rooftop material to absorb water when it rains and only releases it when the heat is raised to a certain temperature. The resulting evaporation will in turn keep the house cool-much like the process of human sweat.
