Historically, solicitors’firms have attractedtheir clients by word ofmouth. Thirty years agothey were not allowedto advertise but theworld has moved on.

However, did youknow some solicitorsnow attract clients bypaying “referral fees” ofhundreds of pounds foreach instruction? Thesepayments are made tointroducers such asestate agents, financialadvisers and claimscompanies.

If you think aboutthis — you are beingtreated as a tradablecommodity! Theimplications for you are: Can you rely on“recommendations”from estate agents —are they based on meritor a referral fee? Who is paying thereferral fee? The likelyanswer is that this willbe passed on to you.

We are local. We donot pay referral fees.We would be pleased toprovide you with a feeestimate and we will nottreat you like acommodity.

LEGALEAGLEwith Lawson Lewis Blakers

Peacehaven and TelscombeUnder-21s are in a footballcup final. This season is thefirst time the club hascompeted at this level and, against all predictions, theteam made it to the final ofthe county Under-21Challenge Cup.

In the final, which was dueto be played at NewhavenFC’s ground on Tuesday,May 1, they were meetinglocal rivals Saltdean Utd.

The youngsters haveplayed brilliantly all seasonand this final appearance isa well-deserved reward forthe hard work the team andthe coaches have put in.And with their leagueextended to May 10 becauseof postponements they alsohave an outside chance ofwinning the league. Not to beoutdone, the club’s Under-12

team won their league withtwo games to spare.

The target for the firstteam was to finish higher

than last season’s 14th placeand they were on course tofinish sixth or seventh.

The future is lookingbrighter for the club. All thehistorical debt has now beenpaid and the club is tradingwell.

But with any football clubthere is always the nextinvestment. New floodlightsand a new clubhouse andchanging rooms are nowneeded.

FROM THE MP

and Peacehaven

I am delighted the public meeting I hosted inApril at the Meridian Centre for womenaffected by the change to the state pensionage was such a success and I want to extenda special thank-you to everyone who wasable to attend, to the speakers and to theMeridian Centre and staff for having us.

I also want to thank the women who haveshared with me their stories of how they havebeen impacted by state pensions. Many ofthese stories were sombre reading but theygive me personal examples I can try to raisein Parliament.

In my last column I said the SecondReading of MP Carolyn Harris’s bill on statepension inequality was set for April 27 but thesponsors of the bill have withdrawn it until thesummer.

This is because a lot of bills scheduled fora Second Reading in recent weeks havefailed to make it to a vote or even a debatedue unfortunately to filibustering and timerunning out. In addition, if a bill fails to get

read, debated or voted on when it isscheduled, it falls to the bottom of the queuefor future attempts and usually never makesit to Parliament as a result.

Consequently, Carolyn and her sponsorshave got the Second Reading rescheduledfor the summer, when hopefully we have abetter chance of the bill reaching a vote and Iwill be proud to vote for it.

The timing also gives us longer to raiseawareness of this issue nationally and in thelocal community, and I would urge anywomen affected who were not able to attendthe meeting to get in touch with my office so Ican keep you informed of my parliamentaryactivities on the WASPI (Women AgainstState Pension Inequality) issue.

Planning a holiday and struggling tofind travel insurance at a reasonableprice? How can you be sure it islegitimate and not a scam?

Insurance is a financial product andthe seller must be registered with theFinancial Conduct Authority. Checkthe seller is listed on the financialwatchdog’s register, which can beviewed on its website.

If the seller is not named, take yourbusiness to a different provider as theseller will not be legitimate. If listed, itis still worth doing further checks.

Compare the price of the insurancedeal with similar offers fromcompetitors. Big discounts can oftenbe a sign of a scam but it could alsobe the policy is cheap because it doesnot provide adequate cover.

Ask for a copy of the full policy soyou can check it against where you

are going and what you are doing. Ifthe seller will not provide one or saysit will only give it to you it after youhave paid, do not give it yourbusiness.

Once you know the seller islegitimate use a secure paymentmethod to pay for the insurance. Donot pay with a bank transfer.
