HURON COUNTY, OHIO CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS

BUTTERFIELD CEMETERY, NEW LONDON TOWNSHIP

Butterfield Cemetery, sometimes called Miller Cemetery, is located in Sect. 3, Twp. 2, Range 20, New London Twp., on SR60 two miles north of New London, at the intersection of Prospect Road, northwest corner. The OGS Ohio Cemeteries book lists this as Barrett Cemetery, but that is incorrect. Barrett's Corners is further to the north. The Prospect Rd. corner was cal~ed King's Corners in the mid-1900's after a store at the site -- not to be confused with New London's older name. Butterfield Cemetery has always been the township cemetery. The stones were copied by a Mrs. Rathbone in 1939. This transcription was made by Tom Neel in 1984. The stones generally face west. Copying was started in the northwest corner with stones numbered north to south, and rows numbered west to east.

Then --- thou not though I awhile, Shall be from the removed. Let thou foes of Heaven thy grief beguile, Farewell Oh fondly loved."

11 ---- (six broken pieces amongst pile, with no ',markings)

12 (two broken stones on bottom; the smaller one unmarked, the other buried too deep to dig out without tools)

Unknown - Butterfield Cemetery

When Mrs. Rathbone copied the cemetery in 1939 (published in Cherry's book), she listed 29 stones which cannot be found t oday . However, nearly all of these 29 stones are located in other New London or Fitchville Twp. cemeteries and certainly have always been there. We therefore, cannot (with 'any accuracy) give a listing of gravestones at the Butterfield Cemetery in 19 39 that are not found or are not readable today -- so wil l not try to do so . Certainly, many older burials are unmarked.

CHOLERA AND DAY CEMETERIES, NEW LONDON TOWNSHIP

CHOLERA CEMETERY

The Cholera Cemetery may have been located on the northwest corner of Euclid Road and County Line Road in Sect. 4, TWp. 2, Range 20, New London TWp., the site of the Village of New London's water department building. Emma Grimwood, a relative of the Hooker brothers, told of walking past this cemetery on the way to school, but we could not get verification from others. Cholera victims from New London were supposed to have been buri ed there. Some say the tradition came about through opponents of the New London Reservoir construction. In fact, a blueprint of the site, found in village records owned by the New London Area Historical Society, shows a cemetery on a small plot of land on the north side of County Line Road mi dway between Townline 79 and Euclid Roads (Lot 16); however, members of both the Kirkpatrick and Stevens families, who lived in the area, state that this small plot was the site of a spring, and there was definitely no cemetery there. There is a small cemetery nearby in Ruggles Township along the south side of the B&O Railroad tracks west of Seven Hill Road which has been called "Typhoid Cemetery". And there was a tombstone located across from the village building on the south side of County Line Road (Ruggles Township) in the fencerow between the Doug Fetterman and Carl Stober farms (now Redies). This fencerow no longer exists, and Mr. Stober relates that it was bulldozed back over the embankment, probably with the tombstone, during logging operations a few years ago. Since the Underh ill's once owned the Fetterman l and, the tombstone may always have been located there, and may not be part of the mysterious Cholera Cemetery. The late Paula Porter Griffin furnished the inscription:

UNDERHILL, Phebe, w/o Benj. UNDERHILL, d. 24 Jan 1844 age 69 y

DAY CEMETERY

Day Cemetery is located in Lot 20, Sect. 1, Twp. 2, Range 20, New London Twp., on the south side of Section Line Road #21, just east of Chenango Road. The landowner was Josiah Day, although when the cemetery was organized 14 May 1859, the committee of James Robinson, L. S. Robinson, S. Hanley, M. R. Day, S. Converse, R. Tripp, G. Tripp, A. Ames, H. E. Nobles, L. W. Nobles, J. Santley, Wm. Day, E. Day, and J. Ames, called it Greenwood Cemetery. The name apparently only stuck unti l the gavel to close the meeting sounded, because it has always been known as the Day Cemetery. The earliest known burial dates to 1834. The inscriptions were copied by Larry Templeton, Mansfield, Ohio, in June 1978, who gave us permission to use his work. This transcription was published with lruch additional information by the late Paula Porter Griffin through the Firelands Historical Society, so refer also to that source for maiden names and parents' names.

East Creek Cemetery

East Creek Cemetery is located in Sect. 2, TWp. 2, Range 20, New London Twp., on the east side of Butler Road just north of Fayette Road. It has also been called Fancher, Underhi ll, or Ketchum Cemetery. There are no Ketchum stones, but they lived adjacent to the cemetery in the schoolhouse until very recently. This cemetery was copied in May and June 1982 by Thomas Stephen Neel, and was corrpared to earl ier transcriptions done by Irene Thomas, Marjorie Cherry, and Henry Timman. Minutes indicate that the East Creek Cemetery Association was organized at the school on June 11 and July 9, 1859, with C.W. Johnson, L.S. Foster, and D.S. Pond elected as Trustees.
